I was 15 in 1977 and had every single in this list. Then I got married aged 24 and had to sell everything to get a pram for my daughter. This era was my time I saw the Clash in Inverness. The Jam in the Capitol in Aberdeen playing their debut album and saw Suzie and the banshees 3 times. Great times and great memories.
I will never forget the first time I heard "Destination Venus". Absolutely fantastic! I had both their albums. Eater? Say no more! Top stuff! I love them.
Good video few things i would of left off....my top 5(save space lol).. 5) the Bears - Decisions. 4) the Adverts - No Time to be 21. 3) the Clash - Clash City Rockers. 2) Subway Sect - Nobodys Scared. 1) Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden (first band i saw live age 13 in 1978 when it came out & my first year into punk).
You are correct ‘this perfect day’ was the same TOTP as ‘pretty vacant’ , I remember that but I often struggle to remember why I just went into the kitchen 😁
Really enjoyed this thanks. I have 18 of these, and love hearing you talk about them A great period of music for me. And delighted that you got Ramones in there! ;)
Great selection, thanks for the video. I totally agree with Gary Gilmore's Eyes and Do Anything You Wanna Do - two of the best songs ever to be released on black plastic. Speaking of The Saints, I would prefer the 2-minute bomber Demolition Girl. Anyway, I was wondering about that comic book page at your wall. What's that?
Pretty Vacant was the first song that really blew my mind. I like this list it was very interesting but I am surprised that some of bands listed were included especially the Motors and I’m even more surprised that the Damned aren’t featured being the ones who started it all. No Sham 69 and the Clash so far down the list but it’s a personal choice. Thanks very enjoyable.
Debated Motors but went with it in the end. I don’t have any 77 era Damned on 45. New rose was 76 so couldn’t be included. Sham 69 were more 78 onwards.
I do agree on a a lot of your selections Chris but I have a few others, One record from 1977 that really stood out for me and still does today was from Squeeze, the song Cat on a Wall, from the Packet of Three EP on Deptford Fun City Records (owned by Miles Copeland) I love the intro it's very Pistol-esque in places with the opening riff/intro, so much energy in it. My other big was Grip by the The Stranglers, again so much energy and aggression and fabulous work/input by all 4 band members especially Dave Greenfield RIP.
Tremendous Chris, Buzzcocks Orgasm Addict replaces the Heartbreakers, Neat Neat Neat replaces The Motors and Action Time Vision replaces the Vibrators. Excellent selection and informative Cheers
Hello Chris. Im viewing from New Zealand , and i was 17 in 1977. I liked Punk back then. My favourite group was the Damned. I had the pleasure of seeing Public Image Ltd in the 1980s, and it was great to see John Lydon perform. We had a small punk scene here in NZ, with the band Suburban Reptiles and the Scavengers being popular. Pretty Vacant is my fave Sex Piatols song too. I liked the Stranglers too. Get a grip on Yourself is excellent.
"Don't Dictate" is great. Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls were fab too. X-Ray Spex has always been one of my favourite bands. I love the saxophone and the raw edge. "Germ Free Adolescents" is a top album. Wreckless Eric was underrated. "Whole Wide World" has a great heavy beat. I had the first two albums by the Boys. Excellent! I saw the Vibrators live here in this town back in 1984. September, as a matter of fact. You are right about Stiff Little Fingers. The Clash had it all. The Stranglers. It's hard for me to pick a fave song by them. I love them. "Dancing The Night Away" is the best tune by The Motors. I do love "Airport" as well. I don't like Aleister Crowley. That tune by The Adverts was one of the first punk tunes I ever heard. On Swedish radio in 1978. I love The Jam. Top tunes all the way. Except the last album. "One Track Mind" featuring Johnny Thunders. Excellent. The Saints were marvellous! "Rockaway Beach" is a brilliant song! I have always loved the Ramones. "Pretty Vacant" - Matlock said he was influneced by ABBA when he wrote the initial riff. Thank you for an interesting exposé!
I had hopes of competing with you when I saw the title, but no. Still have many of the singles I bought in '77, but you were diving deeper. I was a regular patron of Rather Ripped Records in Berkeley, California, and they got frequent shipments from England, so I do have some wonderful 45s. Also got some goodies from the back page ads in Trouser Press. It was a good time to be alive.
@@TheVinylOrchard Yes he was I used to record some of his shows on cassette! Oops 😆 MY list would change from week to week! With me The Jam All around the world was my favourite! And the Rezilloes I can't stand my baby! But all great stuff!
Only have 5/20 on 7" but have most of these on CD's various. Gary Gilmore Eyes was the first single I bought, 47yrs ago!!! next month - how!!!?? my top 5; 5- The Rods - Do anything you wanna do, 4 - Stranglers - Peaches, 3 - Buzzcocks - Orgasm Addict, 2 - Clash - Complete Control, 1 - Sex Pistols - God save the queen Apart from 1 & 2, a top 5 is a nigh on impossible task. About to watch your 1978, which we be even harder!
The Damned - New Rose ( I know Late 1976, but this had be on the list ) The Undertones 'Teenage Kicks' The Fall - Repetition ( Bingo-Master's Break-Out) The Buzzcocks - Boredom (Spiral Scratch ) Subway Sect - Nobodys Scared Wire- '1 2 X U ' The Depressions - Family Planning Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation The Killjoys - Johnny Won't Get to Heaven London - Everyone's a Winner 999 - Nasty! Nasty! Penetration - Don't Dictate Slaughter and the Dogs - You're a Bore Generation X - Your Generation Johnny Moped - incendiary Device Chelsea - Right to Work The Drones - Bone Idol Cortinas - Fascist Dictator The Maniacs - Chelsea77 Stinky Toys - Boozy Creed and yes ... Television- 'Marquee Moon'
Fabulous list I sold New Rose years ago stupidly but it wouldn’t get in on the basis of being 76. Contemplated Boredom. Thought about Maniacs, Slaughter, cortinas , Chelsea Nasty Nasty was a possibility but have shown it a few times recently as I have the super rare 78rpm copy Might have included RHell but don’t own the single only the LP Teenage Kicks yes but 78 Moped SSEct, Killjoys, and Drones are on my want list Generation X. Mmm not sure but I do have it Showed Penetration. Great stuff
I was 15 in 1977 the first record I heard that really got me into punk was new rose by the damned, I was hooked thereafter. Still my favourite record of all time. Heard it on the new wave compilation album and spent all my pocket money on every record I could get hold of with damned damned damned being my first lp. Still have most of them still today. 😊
I'd have to include Mary of the 4th Form in my 1977 choices. Used to cycle 6 miles to Wool Station to get to the Village Bowl and catch the Milk Train home afterwards. Think the Rats 1977 tour might have been my 1st ever gig so im probably swayed by that. Magic times.
re . Pretty Vacant SOS riff. Yes, indeed it was taken from that song. Matlock loved Abba's ability for melody. Rotten loved Abba and so too did Sid. Really hard to pick a favourite from that year as there were so many truly great songs released. Though Gary Gilmore Eyes is brilliant, I actually prefer the live version of One Chord Wonders recorded at the Roxy. So raw and full of energy. Gaye Advert was the ultimate punk rock chick!❤ Lovely to know that Gaye and TV Smith are still together all these years later.🙂
Don’t have dead boys on 45. Only album. Buzzcocks is in my 78 list. Ditto identity. Neat would make it but don’t own it on 45. Only on album. This for me was a nostalgic list as much as anything. Cheers my friend, Chris
There are so many brilliant punk singles from 77. For so many of us at the time John Peel was essential listening. You did well to keep the list down to 20. I think I would have chosen One Chord Wonders as my favourite Adverts single. I would definitely have to put some Damned in the list, probably Stretcher Case Baby. Also Larry Wallis with Police Car. Enjoyable video. Cheers...Mike
I did contemplate Stretcher Case and Police Car. Also Fascist Dictator by Cortinas, Right to work by Chelsea. Orgasm addict by Buzzcocks, bootboys by Slaughter and Screwed Up by Menace. What a great year. Thanks for watching Mike.
You saying about buying the wrong song, I did that also . John Peel used to play Helter Skelter by Siouxsie a lot . I was in Virgin Marble Arch and I saw a banshees single with a staircase cover .. you can guess the rest! Was very surprised when i got home but loved it all the same !!
Good list, I also owned many of these and saw many of them live.. I would also have included Chelsea, the Fall, Buzzcocks and Metal Urbain, all regulars on the mighty Peel show!
Right to work and orgasm addict nearly made it. I don’t own any Fall. Never got them. I have Paris maquis 45 by metal urbain which is interesting but for me not essential. Thanks for watching and commenting Simon
Enjoyed watching the video and throwing my toys out of my pram from time to time :) I don't think The Motors even pretended to be punk. They were more of a Status Quo pub rock cover band. Looking back almost 50 years on, I think "Oh Bondage Up Yours" was the best and most important single released during '77. At the time, for me, it was "God Save The Queen" followed by "Complete Control". I would also have found room for Alternative TV's "How Much Longer" and Chelsea's "Right To Work", but it's all opinion. Probably.
Some great choices there. I really debated including the Motors but at the time John Peel, was playing it and mixing it in with punk classics. So it’s there. And in the end this is just my favourites. But I am loving the comments. It’s what makes making videos so worthwhile . Cheers, Chris
what do you say to these type of vids, personal taste really. i have most of these , probably over 12 of them. although an ep, i would add buzzcocks spiral scratch. there's a heap
I'm glad you had Pistols at number one. It makes perfect sense as they were the pinnacle of punk movement at the time with damn fine tunes. Wouldn't make sense to not have them claim the top spot! As for The Boys First Time, I have forgotten about that song. It's great but I didn't know who it was by, so thanks for that.
Interesting, just last week I noticed that I play In The City way more than any other Jam LP these days. That & Can't Stand The Rezillos (fantastic bass) are regulars on ny turntable.
I watched this and the '78 one a few days back, really enjoyable. I turned ten years old in the Summer of '77 and although I'd had records scrounged from my brothers (Bolan, Slade etc) 1977 was the year I started getting new records. I still prefer Holidays in the Sun / Satellite to Pretty Vacant though and The Rats' Mary of the 4th Form a massive single for me then (the lyrics appearing a little creepy now) . The Modern World by The Jam was first bought by my cousin and became the song that changed my life to be honest; I still loved a lot of the punk and new wave tracks, but the sixties bands also beckoned and the Mod revival was on the horizon. Some great 45s here, some unexpected too. Nice to hear a mention of Armadillo, I loved that shop although I went there a few years after you. With it being a bit out of the main town I usually only got as far as Uptown at The Triangle. Cheers again for this!
Enjoyed this. Really interesting idea. I'm guessing your Rule 1' about having to have a physical copy of the single meant you didn't have The Buzzcocks Orgasm Addict? They would def be in my top 5
I do indeed have orgasm addict but it didn’t make it as well as Maniacs, Slaughter, Cortinas, alternative Tv, Chelsea, menace, 999, nosebleeds, and Larry Wallis. And that’s just 77. Too much choice
I agree with the rods tune! Probably put that as one or two in mine, a real manifesto for life that song! Will get back to you about the rest of my list in another comment!!
Art School is indeed the best track on In The City. The 1st track I heard by The Jam on a free lp given away by Sounds. No Damned is interesting. I’d have chosen White Man for The Clash track and Can’t Stand My Baby and would have found space for Spiral Scratch probably ahead of The Yobs. Nice rundown btw, cheers
great video [you could play bits of the records ...would be even better[ brings back great memories, especially lurkers and eater. clash complete control, and vibrators into the future missing !!!!! but otherwise brilliant....did you ever hear yobs xmas album?
Awesome collection. I would have squeezed Ian Drury in there. Great to see The Saints so high, many would have put Stranded instead of This Perfect Day although I agree with you. Yes punk was over by the end of the 70s and the UK and Aussies did it best.
Love Ian Dury but today he didn’t make it. Tough call. I’m stranded is great and was the second saints single I bought. This Perfect Day as well,as being perfect is my nostalgic pick too.
I was 15 in 1977 and I like most of your choices but I would have chosen Complete Control.as the Clash Choice. Anyway here are some of my top pick of the punks from'77: Orgasm Addict-Buzzcocks,(Pete Shelley is song writing legend, of course Leavin' Here-Motorhead (borderline but raw enough to be punkish) Arrabs in Arrads -Art Attacks (Funny Non PC Good tune) Stranglers-Go Buddy Go I do like Peaches as well. Peaches really brings back the Summer of '77, but Go Buddy go is such a brilliant rocker. For the Adverts I would have One Chord Wonders or Safety in Numbers, but yes Gary Gilmour's Eyes is a great weird idea for a song and a good tune. .
Great choices. I really debated complete control but white riot was my entry point. So it’s a nostalgic choice. One chord wonders is great. That peaches 45 was something else. Great B side as you said.
I was hoping you would include that Sex Pistols single. My copy got warped on top of a hot amplifier, but I kept it anyway. Most of what I have is Pistols, or Clash, or Costello but I do have that same Eddie & The Hot Rods 45 with the Aleister Crowley sleeve. Happy days.
I understand they were the forerunners of punk though. Didn’t really come over very well. I wonder if they would have had the success they did if punk hadn’t happened? Cheers, Chris
The Dr Feelgood live album "Stupidity" topped the UK album charts in September 1976 before either "Anarchy" or "New Rose" were released. I think they were a symptom of the audience that was waiting for punk rock rather than a band that jumped on the train, like, say, The Stranglers or The Only Ones. They would have been who they were, either way.@@TheVinylOrchard
Of course all lists are subjective..I too was 14 in 77 but my choices are a little different.. 1..The Adverts- Safety in Numbers 2.. Slaughter and the dogs- Where have all the bootboys gone? 3.. Buzzcocks - What do i get? 4..999- Emergency 5..Ultravox!-Young savage 6..Sham69- Borstal Breakout 7..Sex Pistols- God save the Queen 8..The Clash-Complete control 9.. Generation X- Your Generation 10..Eater-Outside View
Thanks to UA-cam for putting this on my feed, brilliant top 20, everyone has their own and, personally , I would’ve swapped White Riot with Complete Control. I would also have found room for New Rose (Damned) and What Do I Get (Buzzcocks). You’ve also just prompted me to get my Eater album out and give it a spin 😂😂😂👍
Thank you for watching. They had to be from 1977. So New Rose wouldn’t qualify (1976) and What do I get is 78. The latter is going to feature in my follow up to this when I share my top 20 but from 1978. Eater were a decent band. Cheers, Chris
I'm surprised that i didn't know all of these. Many great songs and bands. There's a song by a Finnish punk band which is actually a love song to Gaye Advert. Very un-punk thing to do. Sax player was Lora Logic ( i don't remember right now did she play on that particular track), don't know how they managed to get her to play on it considering their budget must've been around as much as a used tea bag. I must put my number one as Sex Pistols Holidays In The Sun as it had the incredible intro which in time would help my way in to punk rock music. Pasi
@@TheVinylOrchard Had to come back here and tell you; Just a day ago i watched this video of yours and yesterday i found one of those singles. Radiators From Space. Some coincidence huh?
An idea…. Around 77-82 I would buy records due to the colour of the vinyl ! Come back Jonee by Devo (Grey) being an example as I had not heard them . How about you fav coloured vinyls!!
Remember the Dickies did "Banana Splits" in a yellow vinyl and "White Christmas" in a white vinyl,l have The Members "Sound of the Suburbs" in clear vinyl, will have to get my box of Singles out of the cupboard see what else is there.
@@TheVinylOrcharda cracking tune, they werefrom Belfast, a bit like a more pop version of Stiff Little Fingers, the album they did isn't too bad either
This was so interesting and a single by single record of 77 that matches mine. I thought an early Buzzcocks might have made it. Laura Logic's band Essential Logic still play as do others including The Boys who are still great live.
@@TheVinylOrchard Evening Chris, a great record from '77 was Let's Go on Lightning label by Blitzkrieg Bop (Morton Sound) Originally. (youtube doesn't have the proper version) Don't for Punk Junk by The Water Pistols on the State label. Regards and thanks, Ian.
The single version of "This Perfect Day' is sublime. The 'b'side of 'Dancing the night Away' is 'Whiskey & Wine' which is one of the great unheard punk songs. The Adverts 'Crossing the Red Sea' is probably the best pure punk album.
Yes! You took me back in time again, I had and still have most of those, not the one about eating worms though I haven’t heard that. I have eater on white vinyl thinking of the USA and I believe the drummer was 14.
Eaters Dee Generate was actually Roger Bullen from Caterham just South of Croydon in Surrey. He was a classmate of mine in 77 at De Stafford school and was influential in the popularity of punk within the school. I think I’m right in saying that he was coached in his drumming by Chris Miller; Rat Scabies of The Damned.
Good to see uxbridge band the lurkers in. Ironically I saw penetration at brunel uni in uxbridge in 78,and just a few days later the rezillos, undertones supported by joy division at the same venue. Great days
@@TheVinylOrchardI moved to Devon from London around 25 years ago, and was surprised how many great punk acts played in Plymouth amongst other venues in the south west
Great video me ode, got me playing my '77 singles. Much prefer complete control to white riot. a few others are. slaughter & the dogs- cranked up, the nosebleeds- ain't been to no music school, the drones - i just want to be myself, Raped - EP. killjoys- johnny won't get to heaven (what's the connection to jocky wilson....?), so many classics, lost a lot of interest in '78, the originality was gone, the media had told everyone what 'punk' was all about and what to wear, in THEIR opinion. '77 defintely was the prime of punk.
Can't argue with your number one, although any of the pistols singles could have topped your chart , I'd have put shadow by the Lurkers at number 2 , it's such a perfect single, can't understand why it's never been covered by a major act .
1. Cock Sparrer - We love you 2. The Damned - Love Song 3. Elvis Costello - Oliver's army 4. Sex Pistols - Holiday in the sun 5. Heavy Metal Kids - Delirious
I would include ALL those tunes in your ‘bubbling under, not quite sure ‘ list, as Punk. For the simple reason that to me Punk isn't really a sound that you can define and put your finger on, that is set in stone..but more of a ‘period in time’ and a ‘feeling given’. My personal opinion. Keep the great posting up… and hope to see a time when you're able to play the 45s as you do your countdown. .. A little Dansette of similar would suffice and give us listeners the authenticity of the era. 🤔🤷🏼♂️👍🏼
@@TheVinylOrchard if you were to play youy45s as you did your countdown, just write a disclaimer, firstly ,Thanking all the bands and artists, producers and record labels.. and saying that you ‘do not own the rights’ but if there are any complaints from the people that do ,then to contact you at your channel.. I've seen this approach on many other channels with don't seem to have been closed down. It could possibly work in your favour as many old-school punk tunes are on the smaller independent labels who could welcome the fresh exposure, that's if they're still in operation. Wishing you well with all your future offerings comrade.
Damn fine list, could haggle about including the Damned but life is too short. Someone has got to turn this into a spotify playlist (or better still a youtube playlist).
great video, some terrific selections most of which i own, strange that you exclude TRB on the grounds that they're 'not punk' yet you include the motors, its all very subjective but i'd have put TRB in if you are including the motors, both bands weren't really 'punk' in the true sense but they were both a part of it, same with the hot rods, all great bands which i love, dancing the night away is an absolute classic, you say that the feelgoods jumped on the punk bandwagon to some extent, with respect that is nonsense, the feelgoods were a great band who actually inspired the punk generation to a large extent and in my opinion never tried to adapt themselves to the punk style in a way that say the vibrators or the stranglers(both existing before punk exploded) did, the feelgoods stuck to their high energy R and B regardless, personally i'd have put slaughter and the dogs bootboys in, the models man of the year, cortinas fascist dictator, one chord wonders by the adverts, killjoys johnny won't get to heaven and maybe baby baby by the vibrators, perhaps also young savage by ultravox! a very different band in 77 to the one with which most people are familiar with! great nostalgic fun, another forgotten classic is radio stars dirty pictures
I found it really knowing what to include or not actually. Love that TRb song. What I really meant about Feelgood was that they were lumped in with punk although predated it. I wonder if they would have had the success they had in late 70s without punk. Love the band. Toyed with Slaughter as I love that song. Also cranked up too. Like cortinas and one chord but Gilmore is one of my favourite from this era. Would love the Killjoys 45. Ultravox! were a terrific band in the early ! version. Haven’t played dirty pictures for years. Brilliant comment Simon. Thank you so much for watching and contributing your thoughts. Going to do a 1979 version but it is mainly new wave and hardly any punk as such. Cheers, Chris
In ‘77 I was an art student in Bournemouth. I went to any punk gig I could and remember seeing The Stranglers, The Boys and The Jam. When the summer vacation came I moved back up to London and joined a band called first The Monotones and later Berlin as lead singer and rhythm guitarist. We decided to do as many gigs as possible, get tight and take over the world. I had a really brilliant 1977. I took tons of speed, smoked masses of dope, drank as much as possible and had sex with anyone who was willing to.We Played all over England often with Eater and a band called The Maniacs. Thank you for posting this for a while I felt young again.
Maniacs were a contender for the list. Chelsea 77 Sounds like you had a great 77. I was 14 but had lots of fun! Thanks for watching and commenting. So appreciated. Going to do a follow up on 78 singles. Cheers, chris
Probably owned most of them at the time. Really would have threw one chord wonders. Naive the killjoys and regulations neon hearts. Nice to see X-ray spex in there ❤
Hi Chris, when you got to number one I was saying to myself it will either be the Pistols or the Damned. So disappointed when it wasn't the Damned, then I read the comments, I hope it isn't too rude to call you a pillock for selling your Damned records. 🙃 At the start you said you saw a few of the bands, I was lucky and saw most of them, some more than once. A good selection, if I went through your 1977 collection of singles, as in your rules, I think I might have came up with a very similar listing. It was a great time in my life, best summed up by Joe Strummer, I'm the white man in the palais Just loo- lookin' for fun Only lookin' for fun Oh, please mister Just leave me alone I'm only Lookin' for fun Lookin' for fun F, U, N Fun, despite all the cow dug written defining punk, F U N was the main reason for me.
Sold New Rose in about 7879. Mad. Never got it back. So expensive now. I am going to post a 1978 version of this soon I saw Jam, Clash and Radiators from Space. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment Cheers, Chris
I remember buying "Sheena is a Punk Rocker " from my local Woolworths, prefer that to Rockaway Beach to be honest, Rockaway was covered by Action Pact eventually.
"My Top 20 (Mostly) UK Punk 45s" might be a more apt title, yeah? Also: The Monks were pretty popular here in Canada - ever heard of them? They were kind of ringers as they were accomplished musicians but it was/is a fave.
Weren’t they from the strawbs? Novelty band I think. My picks were mainly U.K. based bands as I’m English and that’s my lived experience I guess. Bar a few bits the UK did it sooooo much better too
Babylon's Burning - The Ruts, Identity - X-Ray Spex, New Rose - The Damned, Blank Generation -Richard Hell, A Town Called Malice - The Jam, Alternative Ulster - Stiff Little Fingers, Too Drunk to Fuck - Dead Kennedys, Career Opportunities - The Clash, No More Heroes - The Stranglers, Borstal Breakout - Sham 69, Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols, Right to Work - Chelsea
Career opportunities is a great song. It encapsulates that era for me and what punk was about, but for me. I was leaving school and the careers officer was pushing all of us into the local engineering works factory. I didn't go!
1978 follow up video here…

great list but i would definitely have The Damned - Neat Neat Neat in there somewhere.
I don’t have it otherwise it would have been there. I had new rose but stupidly sold it and nowadays both are really pricey.
Great memories indeed
I was the same mate had to sell my full collection
The band spelled Suzie Siouxsie
Any regrets (about buying that pram?)
Ditto mate but I still have mine. 😊
First time to check in - great selection and background too- will tune in again! Nice job!
Thanks for joining me!
Well done Chris. They were all gems. I salute your appreciation for punk~
Rob/Boston
Cheers Rob!
I will never forget the first time I heard "Destination Venus". Absolutely fantastic! I had both their albums.
Eater? Say no more! Top stuff! I love them.
Eater were underrated I think
Great diverse selection, which brought back good memories - thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
Good video few things i would of left off....my top 5(save space lol)..
5) the Bears - Decisions.
4) the Adverts - No Time to be 21.
3) the Clash - Clash City Rockers.
2) Subway Sect - Nobodys Scared.
1) Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden (first band i saw live age 13 in 1978 when it came out & my first year into punk).
All a bit 78 for me. I restricted myself to 77 only
@@TheVinylOrchard like I said I got into punk in 78 age 13 etc

You are correct ‘this perfect day’ was the same TOTP as ‘pretty vacant’ , I remember that but I often struggle to remember why I just went into the kitchen 😁
Absolutely the same here! 😂😂
I love my baby cos she does good sculptures yeah…Rezillos. Singer was Faye Fife…band was fae Fife. 😂
X-Ray Spex…fantastic band.
My favourite Rezillos track
Really enjoyed this thanks. I have 18 of these, and love hearing you talk about them A great period of music for me. And delighted that you got Ramones in there! ;)
Thank you. Really kind!
Great selection, 1977 was a great year for punk music and was the year I left school at 18 to jump straight into that scene headlong...
Fantastic year for music generally
I guessed correctly your #1. Excellent selection .. love your Punk UA-cam’s.
A great era! Thank you so much for watching
The Rezillos are from Dunfermline, in Fife(hometown of the Simple Minds)
Great selection, thanks for the video. I totally agree with Gary Gilmore's Eyes and Do Anything You Wanna Do - two of the best songs ever to be released on black plastic. Speaking of The Saints, I would prefer the 2-minute bomber Demolition Girl. Anyway, I was wondering about that comic book page at your wall. What's that?
Demolition girl is ace too. Tough decisions!
That is a Victor comic from about 1970. Boys magazine from back in the day. Used to love it
Wow fantastic mate gonna dig out some of these tunes thank you😊
Glad you enjoyed
Grip was a real contender. Peaches is more nostalgic pick for me. Will seek out that squeeze 45. Have lots of their stuff. Cheers, Chris
Tremendous Chris, Buzzcocks Orgasm Addict replaces the Heartbreakers, Neat Neat Neat replaces The Motors and Action Time Vision replaces the Vibrators. Excellent selection and informative
Cheers
Tremendous choices. Would have shown Neat if I owned it
Great video and a great list too. You`ve jogged my old memory with a couple of these. Ive subscribed and look forward to the other vids.
Thank you. Will do. 78 only punk vid very soon. Thank you for subscribing!

I had the pleasure of seeing Public Image Ltd in the 1980s, and it was great to see John Lydon perform. Get a grip on Yourself is excellent.
Some great songs and bands there
Great list. I was a toddler in 1977 so punk is still a voyage of discovery. Chelsea - Right to Work is one of my favourites.
Great song.
Fab comment Larz. Interestingly I like The Gift by the Jam.
77 though. What a year for music generally
Cheers my friend
I had hopes of competing with you when I saw the title, but no. Still have many of the singles I bought in '77, but you were diving deeper. I was a regular patron of Rather Ripped Records in Berkeley, California, and they got frequent shipments from England, so I do have some wonderful 45s. Also got some goodies from the back page ads in Trouser Press. It was a good time to be alive.
76-81 were brilliant years
I need to have a look at my 77 singles as a 17 year old John Peel was the influence on me most of your picks I have as well! Great video!
Very important and special man
@@TheVinylOrchard Yes he was I used to record some of his shows on cassette! Oops 😆 MY list would change from week to week! With me The Jam All around the world was my favourite! And the Rezilloes I can't stand my baby! But all great stuff!

Only have 5/20 on 7" but have most of these on CD's various. Gary Gilmore Eyes was the first single I bought, 47yrs ago!!! next month - how!!!?? my top 5;
5- The Rods - Do anything you wanna do,
4 - Stranglers - Peaches,
3 - Buzzcocks - Orgasm Addict,
2 - Clash - Complete Control,
1 - Sex Pistols - God save the queen
Apart from 1 & 2, a top 5 is a nigh on impossible task. About to watch your 1978, which we be even harder!
The order is a bit arbitrary tbh. Sparks a bit of interest about a great era! Cheers Dave
The Damned - New Rose ( I know Late 1976, but this had be on the list )
The Undertones 'Teenage Kicks'
The Fall - Repetition ( Bingo-Master's Break-Out)
The Buzzcocks - Boredom (Spiral Scratch )
Subway Sect - Nobodys Scared
Wire- '1 2 X U '
The Depressions - Family Planning
Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation
The Killjoys - Johnny Won't Get to Heaven
London - Everyone's a Winner
999 - Nasty! Nasty!
Penetration - Don't Dictate
Slaughter and the Dogs - You're a Bore
Generation X - Your Generation
Johnny Moped - incendiary Device
Chelsea - Right to Work
The Drones - Bone Idol
Cortinas - Fascist Dictator
The Maniacs - Chelsea77
Stinky Toys - Boozy Creed
and yes ...
Television- 'Marquee Moon'
Fabulous list
I sold New Rose years ago stupidly but it wouldn’t get in on the basis of being 76.
Contemplated Boredom.
Thought about Maniacs, Slaughter, cortinas , Chelsea
Nasty Nasty was a possibility but have shown it a few times recently as I have the super rare 78rpm copy
Might have included RHell but don’t own the single only the LP
Teenage Kicks yes but 78
Moped SSEct, Killjoys, and Drones are on my want list
Generation X. Mmm not sure but I do have it
Showed Penetration.
Great stuff

@Zen_Not_Zen cool!
An amazing song
I met Arturo Bassick a few years ago as The Lurkers played in our town. We (Bizex-B) shared the venue with them and a few other bands.
@@LarzGustafsson good fun band
I'd have to include Mary of the 4th Form in my 1977 choices. Used to cycle 6 miles to Wool Station to get to the Village Bowl and catch the Milk Train home afterwards. Think the Rats 1977 tour might have been my 1st ever gig so im probably swayed by that. Magic times.
The village bowl. Remember that!
Loved that ,but Looking after No 1 was great as well.
@AVIARYCOURT it was a contender
1977 the year i left school at 15. Spending my money from work on records. A happy happy time❤
1977 was one of the best years ever for music. Great memories too! I was 14 then! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Gaye Advert was the ultimate punk rock chick!❤
Lovely to know that Gaye and TV Smith are still together all these years later.🙂
Adverts were a great little band. Pretty vacant is perfection. Cheers, Chris
had to stop this video just to go listen to The Yobs ,fabulous stuff.
😂 the worm song is fantastic!
Used to sing that one to my sprog, think that it was originally a scout song.
@luggylugworm it is indeed

Great choices and great video. I must admit though, I was surprised London weren't in there. A very underrated band from that era.
Nearly showed a 12” from them
You saying about buying the wrong song, I did that also . John Peel used to play Helter Skelter by Siouxsie a lot . I was in Virgin Marble Arch and I saw a banshees single with a staircase cover .. you can guess the rest! Was very surprised when i got home but loved it all the same !!
The Staircase is a great song
I did say they are my favourites. So yes…personal taste.
Boys are a great little band. First Lp is a classic. Always going to be the Pistols at 1
Glad you had This Perfect Day in there, often overlooked. New Rose has to be a contender, also Cranked Up really High- Slaughter & The Dogs.
New rose is 76 so not a contender. Don’t own that slaughter single. But it’s great.
Interesting, just last week I noticed that I play In The City way more than any other Jam LP these days. That & Can't Stand The Rezillos (fantastic bass) are regulars on ny turntable.
Great LPs
Amazing creative bass player DK Smyth
Record shopping in the triangle. Great memories. Bus stop records in Westbourne too. Cheers, Chris
Hi Chris lots of great picks. I’ve also always loved that rods single can’t argue with your number 1 .. thanks for sharing your favourites 👍
Thanks for watching Rob. Some great memories right there.
Remember the Rods doing that on Multicoloured Swop Shop!
The Radiators From Space were absolutely brilliant. The album, "TV Tube Heart", is amazing.
@@LarzGustafsson saw them live with thin Lizzy
Enjoyed this. Really interesting idea. I'm guessing your Rule 1' about having to have a physical copy of the single meant you didn't have The Buzzcocks Orgasm Addict? They would def be in my top 5
I do indeed have orgasm addict but it didn’t make it as well as Maniacs, Slaughter, Cortinas, alternative Tv, Chelsea, menace, 999, nosebleeds, and Larry Wallis. And that’s just 77. Too much choice
I did two videos of my punk new wave collection. Some corkers in those!

I agree with the rods tune! Probably put that as one or two in mine, a real manifesto for life that song! Will get back to you about the rest of my list in another comment!!
It’s a classic
Art School is indeed the best track on In The City. The 1st track I heard by The Jam on a free lp given away by Sounds.
No Damned is interesting. I’d have chosen White Man for The Clash track and Can’t Stand My Baby and would have found space for Spiral Scratch probably ahead of The Yobs. Nice rundown btw, cheers
Don’t have neat neat neat sadly. Boredom was a real contender. Can’t stand my baby too. Complete control nearly beat white riot
great video [you could play bits of the records ...would be even better[ brings back great memories, especially lurkers and eater. clash complete control, and vibrators into the future missing !!!!! but otherwise brilliant....did you ever hear yobs xmas album?
Copyright issues when you play music often. I went with White Riot over Complete Control. But it was a close call. The yobs are Hilarious
Got to be drury in there mate
Tough call to leave out
I’m Stranded came out in 1976, I think.
@@maryburke5423 it was a 76 release and therefore wasn’t a contender. I prefer perfect day and know your product anyhow.
Happy days.

76 was a good year. Not sure I have enough to show though
@@TheVinylOrchard afterwards I saw your 78 one too!!
Just stumbled across your channel. Great vid but I disagree with your comment about Dr Feelgood. Still subscribed tho 👍
For me they were a pub rock band who had been around a while. Maybe it was the media that dumped them in with punk. Probs

I'm surprised that i didn't know all of these. Many great songs and bands. There's a song by a Finnish punk band which is actually a love song to Gaye Advert. Very un-punk thing to do.
There are often copyright issues with playing clips but I might try again in the future. Had issues in the past
Wishing you well with all your future offerings comrade.

great video, some terrific selections most of which i own, strange that you exclude TRB on the grounds that they're 'not punk' yet you include the motors, its all very subjective but i'd have put TRB in if you are including the motors, both bands weren't really 'punk' in the true sense but they were both a part of it, same with the hot rods, all great bands which i love, dancing the night away is an absolute classic, you say that the feelgoods jumped on the punk bandwagon to some extent, with respect that is nonsense, the feelgoods were a great band who actually inspired the punk generation to a large extent and in my opinion never tried to adapt themselves to the punk style in a way that say the vibrators or the stranglers(both existing before punk exploded) did, the feelgoods stuck to their high energy R and B regardless, personally i'd have put slaughter and the dogs bootboys in, the models man of the year, cortinas fascist dictator, one chord wonders by the adverts, killjoys johnny won't get to heaven and maybe baby baby by the vibrators, perhaps also young savage by ultravox! a very different band in 77 to the one with which most people are familiar with! great nostalgic fun, another forgotten classic is radio stars dirty pictures
Ultravox! were a terrific band in the early ! version.

Fun, despite all the cow dug written defining punk, F U N was the main reason for me.
Sold New Rose in about 7879. Mad. Never got it back. So expensive now.
I am going to post a 1978 version of this soon
I saw Jam, Clash and Radiators from Space.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment
Cheers, Chris
@@TheVinylOrchardI will look forward to your 1978 singles.
@clivemortimore8203 got 20 more crackers
What do you know about a band called Rotten Eggs who done punk Nursery songs.
Nope. Sounds questionable tbf
The Lurkers (or 3 of them) come from Ickenham ……. Not Uxbridge
You got that right. The Motors Dancing the night away should be in there.
Think so too. Classic
I remember buying "Sheena is a Punk Rocker " from my local Woolworths, prefer that to Rockaway Beach to be honest, Rockaway was covered by Action Pact eventually.
Great song
"My Top 20 (Mostly) UK Punk 45s" might be a more apt title, yeah?
Also:
The Monks were pretty popular here in Canada - ever heard of them?
Great choices across several years
Career opportunities is a great song. It encapsulates that era for me and what punk was about, but for me. I was leaving school and the careers officer was pushing all of us into the local engineering works factory. I didn't go!
The Vibrators, or at least a couple of them, were Peter Gabriel's band when he was touring for Peter Gabriel III.
Great fact. Didn’t know that!
