Bill Russell was the best the NBA had at that time in basketball history. It was him and Chamberlain going head-to-head. His game is perceived now as an outlier because the centre is no longer the focus of the offence. Recency bias shapes perception. No guard players, back in Russell's day, were playing like Jordan or Kobe. They didn't even have a 3-point line back then. Bill Russell hasn't been in the media conversation unless it's a part of the GOAT debate in recent years. That's a shame because you cannot compare eras and the skill sets of the positions in those eras. It kind of feels disingenuous that now, upon his passing, that all shows are now giving Russell the love he deserves. He was an incredible player, but an even greater human being.
One of da greatest ever! Da first ambassador for da NBA! For those that say there were only 10 teams on his day it was 12-16 teams on his career from 1956- 1968. 11 titles.
Respect to Mr. Russell, the greatest winner in professional sports history here in the western world. But I don’t know if he’s the first superstar, George Mikan was in Minneapolis doing big things before Russell came along. But still mad respect to Mr. 11 rings. 🙏🏿
