- So I saw how a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser cleared an algae filled pool, and since I am running out of ideas on how to clear up my cloudy pool, I thought I would give it a try.

Flock does the trick, grabs all of those cloudy particles and clumps them together for easy vacuum.
I’ve been cleaning pools for 14 years and the reason it’s not clearing up is because of your filter. It’s to small invest in a sand filter and that should work more water will be filtered out
Hi I’m a first time pool owner lol but my pool came with a sand filter and I’m not sure where to get sand ? Like is it just any sand or is there specific sand for the filter? Thank you !
@@PrincessJ2414 lowes, home depot and walmart usually have pool sand. 20 grade silica for intex; might be different with other brands (should be in manual).
Bags around here are from HTH.
We were told NOT to do this bc the walls aren’t sturdy enough to support the force of water coming out of the jet from a bigger filter. It could blow the wall out.

@@autumnbritten2280 i only have the 18 x 48 intex pool and have the biggest filter i think its the 3500 one and its fine no problems i will say however 4 years ago before getting this one i had one with the inflatable ring on top and i had a bigger filter and it made the pool uneven and it messed it up im not sure how but it was uneven and like put the pool leaning
A clarifier might help, I like Unique. My recommendation would be to not clean the filter so often. A slightly dirty filter actually does a better job of filtering the smaller particulates that cause cloudiness.

What I have learned from watching pool cleaning videos is that what works for one person doesnt work for the next person. Take these tips and use what you will. Once something works for you, great. Keep up with that routine.

Thank you for the video. I have the same problem with my pool so I emptied it! The phosphates were very high. Hopefully, with new water after I scrub out the mustard that must be in there it will be better. Glad to know I am not the only one in life experiencing these problems!

Thank you for talking me out of ever wanting a pool. Just saved a lot of money and grief.
It's dead bleached algae that makes the pool cloudy. You need to use a floculant and keep filtering and rinsing until it's clear. You can also use a dropout to make the particles drop to the floor so you can vacuum it out as waste water not through the filter.

Turn off the equipment, take the filter cartridge out and vacuum to waste carefully once it’s dropped down with the floc
A sand filter pump setup is what you need for that size pool. The paper filter pumps are pretty much worthless. We had an Intex 16x48 and when we switched to a sand filter pump and saltwater system was a Godsend.
What kind/size sand filter did you get that's my size pool 😬
@@n.iniedo7340 It was Hayward brand. When we sold our house we left the pool there so I don’t remember what size it was. We also had it connected to a saltwater chlorinator system. Find a reputable above ground pool supply company and call them for a list of suitable size sand filter pump for your pool. They’ll want to know how many gallons your pool holds.
Yeah the intex sand filters are great if you dont live out in the country on a well that gets low in summer. I had to fill my pool from a truck with lake water. The SFX 1500 with paper filter that came on my pool did a great job of clearing the microscopic dirt out of my pool. My water was always crystal clear until I hooked up my intex sand filter. Theres dead algae on the bottom of my pool that just goes right through the sand filter no matter how many times I backwash. Unfortunately I have to wait for rain to fill my pool back up in order to vaccum that algae out to waste. Im sure the intex sand filter is great for people that are on city water that can refill their pool whenever they want. I tried a pool clarifier because my pool went a bit cloudy and that was a big mistake because I couldn't vaccum the crap out of the bottom to waste. Think im going to unhook my intex and go back to using the paper filters to clear the cloudiness and dead algae out of my pool that just bypasses the intex sand filter.
@@maryjanestrips1014 I guess it depends on your well. The sand filter and salt chlorinator we used kept out water absolutely perfect! We lived on a farm, well water in Missouri with a deep well. Never did get low but Missouri is full of underground springs. The only caveat we encountered was at about 3/4 full, we’d start smelling a sulphur smell from hitting a pocket. But the smell cleared up the next day. Never had a problem balancing our water.
we had this issue last year and tried the Clorox Flocculant, this helps drop ALL particles (probably causing the fog but still balanced) to the bottom and then vacuumed , it worked great! but keeping the filter cleaned plays a major part.
Yes all the comments are right you need a sand filter on that pool and won’t need many chemicals at all.
Liquid chlorine(bleach) and baking soda
Had the same problem with mine last year. This year I started early since water was swamp green, my pool was left uncovered all winter after winter storm tore up my cover. Just bought a remington sun shock solar ionizer. Put it together then set it in pool along with one chlorine tab in holder. Vacuumed pool one time for about 20 mins, had to stop because rain moved in & 4.5 days later I had crystal clear water with zero additional chemicals. I can see the bottom of my pool. Still have not added any chemicals & pool is still clear 3 weeks later. Highly recommend the solar ionizer. Total game changer
I had a problem with mustard algae last summer and pool was cloudy all the time. I was always having water testet and put tons of chemicals in it but nothing worked. Then I got 2 of the Ionizer's and the pool cleared up and stayed clear and I only had to put a small amount of chlorine tabs in after that. I got mine off amazon that I could return in 30 days if they didn't work.

It works using a chemical reaction between copper and the algae where copper kills the algae. You can google and read more, But it cleared my pool up from the mustard algae. Good luck.

The way you did it won’t work, you have to make it to where the water has to pass through the magic eraser to get to the filter / pump. What you did is almost like just throwing the eraser into the pool. The water has to be forced through the sponge to clean the water. Water takes the least path of resistance like electricity so once the eraser becomes saturated the water will simply by pass the eraser.
No , you have to go into the pool and scrub the liner with it
@@karenhorsekeeper1309 nope. Just do as I said. The water will clear. But the PH is key, algae can’t survive in a PH lower than 8.
@@karenhorsekeeper1309 chlorine is a sanitizer but has a PH of 8.0. So adding chlorine to an algae ridden pool can actually make your issue worse. You have to get the PH down around 7.2-7.5 first. J/s

Here is my question he put the sponge in a skimmer not the filer doesn't it have to go in the filter ????
Also don’t trust a pool store get your own full water test kit.
We had a cartridge filter for our pool and had significant issues with the water. Water tests were all perfect, but cloudy constantly battling water issues. Switched to a sand filter and it cleared up in less than two days. Change the sand every 5 years and eazy peazy.
I've been using Pulsar locks on the basket that the water runs through to get out all the little particles and that helped clear mine up a lot
Hey!! Great video! Thanks for the review!! Try cleaning your filter a little less often. When the filter is "dirty" it has more power to retain smaller suspended particles. Also try some clarificant, that will make the small particles to bind together so the filter can pick them up easier. Cheers!

I had a green cloudy pool. What I did is place the magic eraser in the center of the pool filter. It help capture more of the green stuff as well.
Try activated carbon bags that are for aquarium filters. I’d love to see if that works
You probably know this by now, I just happened to stumble on your video. You need floculant. My pool had the exact same problem. I would actually buy new filters instead of just cleaning them out. I researched and found I needed floculant. Just a tiny bit at the bottom of the cup mixed with the pool water and 30 mins later the water was crystal clear and sparkling. Floculant gathers the dirt particles and makes it easier to be filtered. Hope your pool is looking amazing now.

I think it was your skimmer. I tried this today after opening it, it was very cloudy. I put 2 in the skimmer and wow what a difference it has made!! I have a 18ft x 4 ft Doughboy.

You just do floc in evening by instruction on label. Run pump for 2 hours, next morning you vacuum and waste all bottom condensed cloudy part to drainage outside. It will be super clear for sure. (Put return to drainage instead return into pool, take cartridge out while running pump). You do shocking weekly, water test, run pump at lest 8 hrs daily, cloudy will never be back. Hope it works.
Drop a piece of copper tubing in your pump filter. Crystal clear! 👍🏼
Simple water polishing coton medium from fish tank filter in skimmer or on exit ports to filter pump will clear it up as well as less cleaning of main filter.
Did you ever get it cleared? I had the same issue where all my levels were spot on and I ended up using a flocculant that helped settle all the fine particles that the filter didn’t catch. Then I had to vacuum them up. That seems to be your issue

You need to upgrade you filter to a sand filter. The difference is amazing... I have a 18inch Hayward sand filter pump with the 1.5hp motor, crystal clear water.... I have the Intex Ultra frame 24x52 inch....

Don’t know what kind of filter he has but might want to get a better one. On our 3rd 18 ft diameter pool and never had an issue, first two had sand filters, newest is DE all were Hayward. We also use liquid chlorine, dissolves completely without leaving any residue. When we close the pool, only overdose it with the liquid chlorine and when opened the next season it’s always crystal clear.
Try to use a flock treatment t and vacuum. Then use clarifier
I'd say invested in sand filter like the other guy did and you might try dumping a half gallon of Clorox clarifier.
Clarifier should only get a tablespoon pwr gallon then mix in a bucket & dump. Half a gallon of actual clarifier would ruin your filter 😱
Get a beter filter as well. Sand filter will do you sooooo much better. Even the intex filter with the digital timer will be good. Get a larger enough one though. Way better then that cartridge type.
Floc out works wonders to clear that right up
Toss that insufficient filter pump. It's crap and the main reason why you pool is is like that. Invest in a sand filter pump. It's a little pricey but its with it.. Fill up the drum full of pool filter sand & rinse it and let it go!!! once it's dirty it will indicate on the pressure gauge You backwash and clean the sand. Don't have to buy any more filters. Sand can last up to 3 to 5 years
I came here to say this. Those cartridge filter pumps are worthless. I did use mine to make a sprinkler tho. I have a Hayward skimmer attached to my sand filter

If you have metal on your pool sand filter will corrode and rust..I saw a video using a barrel style water bottle with pillow batting I tried it on my knees 10'pool and OMG it worked like a charm
Did you get rid of the phosphates and did that help? For my new similar that was what I had to start with...Phosaway. Measured 1000 at pool store when its supposed to be zero. Not sure if that the testers equivalent of "infinite" or if there really is that high of a concentration but either way they said that would cause both green color and cloudiness.
The issue is filtration, like other people say here, upgrade to the sand filter, or even something better. I service above ground pools and even with the sand filter they get cloudy, unfortunately it's difficult to change over to a common pool style equipment connections.

@@neglky Probably check your pH Go to your Local pool store and get a test strip and it will tell what’s wrong with the water Cause usually The salt water system keeps water crystal clear
I would upgrade to sand filter (much better). Less maintenance as well. I also add salt to my water (old aquarium trick that works well...
For someone coming along and seeing this… I fought with this issue for a season and finally tossed the paper filter and bought a sand filter. It was a world of difference. That tiny paper filter can’t keep up with this volume of water. I could actually vacuum the pool without cleaning the filter 5 times just to vacuum the entire pool. The sand filter was also able to clear the water in a typical turnover of 12-24 hours. And with no bottom drain that poor little outlet half way up the wall and your skimmer are expected to move all that water. It isn’t going to happen. Make sure your return jet is pointed to the left and down towards the bottom to keep the bottom half of the water moving and moving in a circular pattern.
I had alot water issues when i used the cartridge filter that came with my pool, i changed over to a sand filter with 1.5 inch fittings , water was clear n i could keep up with the water chemistry
Thanks for the comment Virgil. I got a sand filter when they were available this year before pool season. It was great at first, but now it is getting the same "yellow" stuff as last year. Running the filter more and brushing more, hoping that does it.

Curious… did you get your pool cleared up? Secondly what type of chlorine are you goin with? Are you using stabilized or non stabilized ? When you say chemical levels were checked it would help to know the levels to better understand and provide feedback. Thx for sharing. Lastly, sometimes it’s best to hit the reset button and drain the pool and start from scratch and keep a journal to see your pools tendencies.
What I found works for me is chemical balance checked every day, filter, vacuum. Algaecide weekly 👍🏾
I had the same problem. It was my calcium the level was really high. I had use use only the liquid chlorine and that solved my problem.
Have you put in some clarifyer or floc?
If you're using soda ash on your pool it can cloud the pool for a fairly long period even though your ph may be spot on.

I have two filters working on my 15 x 48 but my well water is crazy high in ph so it's a struggle with always adding ph- and clarifying vaccuming. It's so much work holy. I had no idea pool operations was so damn complicated.
I had to use super flocculent, followed the instructions, put it in, ran pump for 2 hrs, shut it off and waited 24 hrs, and vacuumed to waste( outside the pool).. vacuum to waste, is a different kind of vacuuming.. it takes the dirt off the bottom of the pool and out of the pool, onto the ground.. I tried everything you did, too..
Obviously a better pump/filter would be a good first step, but with the prices all jacked up, probably best to wait til late summer. Could be your chemicals. I always dilute any powders or granules in bucket with water from the pool then pour around the perimeter with filter running. If using algaecide than turn off filter. Got 14 foot summerwaves here as well with stock pump filter and water is crystal clear. Maybe next time you fill it up, put a sock on end of hose or get hose filter. I filled mine twice :(. Had to relevel ugh. Anyway, first time water was red/brown from iron. Second time with sock and filter it was clear. Good luck.
There are different products that are the same and have different names but the PH of the alkalinity needs to be raised cause I remember mine looking kinda like that when the sun was scorching hot and it was raining quite a bit. And I did have some algae on the bottom of the pool where it was clumped in some areas or had fine lines which I’m sure helped it be cloudy as well. But just vacuum it out had 2 floaters with a couple of 3 inch pucks and dumped 2 2 1/2 chlorinated bleach in there on two separate days, added calcium hardness for the pool liner and some music acid and I was good to go. My pump was the only thing I had to wait for it to filter it back to fairly clear water.

The filter you showed us in the video seems like its a bit too small for how big your pool is. I had the same problem in my pool was smaller and so I thought, maybe I can just get all the chemicals I need, balance that out and see what will happen, and it cleared up not very much, and was still cloudy, so I figured I'm cleaning this filter a lot, the pressure seems pretty slow, I think I should get a better filter, something that can move the water more if the chemicals moving. And so I did. And there was probably the best investment I made when it comes to my pool. So I highly recommend you get. Pool filter, probably a sand 1 but it would be a lot of work trying to clean it, so I just prefer filter balls.because you can just rewatch and a laundry machine, and they'll be set to go. And you only have to clean them, probably. Once every 3 days. Depending on how your pool is, if it gets dirty quick, if they will just stay clean, if you keep the balance correct with the chemicals so probably just check Amazon and. Go from there I really hope this helped
More shock. Mine did the same and then I super shocked it and a day later clear as a bell. Run you filter 24/7.
Hey that skimmer had a different attachment that came in the Box with it so you shouldn't have to use the sea clamp I don't know if you installed it but you installed it but you may have another piece that will clamp right on your pool
This does sound like an aquarium! The activated carbon idea below does sound interesting. But how many pounds would you need for those 15,000 gallons or so I would guess?
You also shouldn’t pull your filter apart like that. When you pull it apart you loosen the coils and it won’t catch and trap the stuff.
Btw, since you got the sand filter, check out the poly balls with the sand....
get a sand filter and use filter helper and mount that strainer permately have a good a good day nice pool and deck
Yeah My friend you need an upgrade on your filter and pump you need to get as much flow rate through your filter to at least filter your total pool at least once a day your pool is around 12800 gal so you need a filter that moves about 30 gals a minute for 8 hours to get a turnover rate of 1 hope this helps
At Leslie's Pool Supply they sell something called Clear Aid. Pour some of that in and it clears it up overnight.
My 18 round pool was green mostly on the bottom , hated the idea of long process of shock then vacuum dumping lots of water out the filter. Instead I Put in three bags of high grade shock and two of these sponges Mr. Clean magic eraser in the
skimmer. let it run until the morning , surprised nice clear blue water next morning it worked for me. Mind you my pool, place had me scared telling me I had to use 5 bags one day of shock then 3 more the next day and yada yada . B.S . Worked well my way.
I use them to clean the surfaces above the water line.

You have to put the magic eraser inside the filter /middle of your cartridge. I do this every week and it works very well
The problem with your pool is your filter system not your chemicals. The intex pools & bestway pools come with lousy filter that will only work with fresh water. I suggest you buy a hayward de filter and pool pump your pool will be clear all year round
Disagree, I have the same pool but have an upgraded pump that cost me more then the pool did and my water looks just like this cloudy pool, that’s why I’m on this video trying to see how to fix it.
I think the Magic Eraser needs to be placed in the center space of the filter you were rinsing. The water 💦 is circulated through the filter.
She mixed the algae where the water was murky with it basically scrubbing it off the walls to bottom and then starting her pump filtering with the Magic Eraser in the basket 24-hours

The water passes over the skimmer, but with less pressure obviously. That's literally the only difference.
Man those above ground pools need a stronger pump and larger filter. I had two of them in the Florida Keys as temp pools until I went with inground pool. And the only thing that helped was changing the to a stronger 1.5 HP pump with larger filter system. Basically I used the new pool filter system we use on our inground pool at our home in Miami. And within 7 hours it was night and day. Our above ground pool was crystal clear.

Note: I was able to get a sand filter this year (there was no sand filters for sale in the Covid summer of 2020).
I use DE filter. Captures all the micro-particles. With it, I have a rule.... if I cant clearly see my toe nails through five feet of water, its dirty. Can really tell how well DE works with a pool light where you can see (or not) particles in front of pool light.

That setup you have is perfect. The deck and the flagstone around the pool are beautiful. Why you do not have a sand filter baffles me.
During the time of this video was the Covid Spring/Summer 2020 and there was no sand filters to be bought (or pools spas and most things pools).
I bought one earlier this year before pool season when they were available.
It was working great, but now the pool is completely green despite shocking and the pool store says all my chemicals are great (just like last year and I still had the green).
Tomorrow I should be getting the PoolRX thingy to see if that is a miracle and will clear up my pool.
Funny, I had a slightly smaller pool for years before this one, and when we got the bigger pool I switched to using the Clorox 3 inch X-Blue tablets and then I got the algae.
I never had any algae when I was using liquid chlorine, so I am going back to using that.
Stay tuned as I will have a video posted after I use the PoolRX thing, whether it works or not (fingers crossed that it works).

This year, because of supply issues, I'm using bleach instead of chlorine tablets. After doing some research, it seems that using the tablets actually hurts the balance of the pool over time and forces you to buy more chemicals to correct the problem. Its all one big trap. Hopefully this year with me using liquid bleach instead of those tablets with caking agents, my pool won't suffer from chlorine lock out. Just a thought. Good luck!
We added the salt water sand filter. It has a timer and it basically maintenance free. I did have some problems this year. Good ole Iron out for the bathroom cleared it up
From the videos I have seen where it has worked they wedged it in to the filter acting as a kind of pollen filter, taking out the extra algae. You just float it in the filter expecting it to work.
I just find these videos interesting. Going to try building my own sand water filter and see how that goes.

Filter is too small, what kind of pump do you have? It’s all about circulation and filtration. And have you tried clarifier?
I have green dust on the floor of my pool should I try to vacuum to waste or to filter. I just don’t think vac head will pick up I have lil wheels and they say not to use brush type with gunite pools so any suggestions greatly appreciated.
I had good success last summer when I did this but it took so much water to replace what was lost. It did speed up the cleaning process just hate wasting water.
Also if you try do it before adding chlorine or you are wasting chlorine along with the water.
Put one or two good squirts of liquid dawn dishwashing soap directly into the pool.
I have the same filter and that's the problem. It's not strong enough to get the pool clean.
Get a sand filter 16"+ approx. That pool is waaaay to big for a cartridge filter A few back flushes and you're golden .
In hindsight you're trying to run a NASCAR thousand horsepower engine down the strip with the fuel pump off of a moped. You need a large sand filter along with two pieces of copper to put in your skimmer (look that one up)

We had same problem with our 18x48 pool this year,never had that problem with cloudiness before and this is our 3rd season with this pool....we did everything the exact same way we did previous 2 years but nothing worked...we went to pool store and did what they said which shockingly made it worse so we drained every drop of water out and started over with a clean slate and its been crystal clear ever since
add a de slurry to your filters to coat them.
I have the exact same problem i had an algae plume,and i shock the pool to kill the algae now my pool is cloudy blue,you know because of dead algae,Clorox has a solution its called pool clarifier im fixing to try it

Definitely need a sand filter for a pool that size
Cleaning ur filter with city water that often could be adding phosphates to your pool. (Especially if it’s well or lake water). Could explain why your pool is cloudy. I’d get a phosphate test kit and use “phosout” and “Ecoclarifier”.
Also if you have any leaks or are constantly adding water from a hose that is definitely contributing to the phosphate issue.
Clean the filter once a week at most. 2-3x a day is way too often. Even if the pool is swam in all day every day.
I use dica powder if pool gets cloudy it takes a week or 2 running filter 24 hrs a day rinsing filter putting put 1/2 cup each time into filter housing do not put straight into pool I made that mistake first time took almost a month of vacuuming to remove powder from bottom of pool

Switch to a salt system. We had nothing but issues with chlorine. Very little maintenance with our salt system and it's not harsh on skin, hair, and eyes.
Try copper sulfate,it will keep it clear for a good while
Sand filter and high flow pump.
