When I was learning to fly gliders the best launch ever was an aero tow by a Chipmunk aircraft - after cast off it was fascinating to watch the Chipmunk flip onto it's back and fall away earthwards. One of the tutors was an RAF pilot who was flying V-bombers (Valiants) all week and could not wait to get into a flimsy glider at the weekends!

Does the winch stop pulling at a certain point?

Yes, if you look closely near the end of the video the winch disengages from the glider and you can see something falling from the sky ;)

The cable falls, sure. The pilot pulls the release lever and the cable disengages from the glider.
My question was about the winch continuing to pull after the release, or does it continue to pull until the cable has been fully retracted.

@deezynar - I had little knowledge of the winching process but I assume on release the winch would stop reeling in so that the recovery vehicle had less distance to travel to tow it back for the next glider launch. Only when activities had ceased for the day would the winch cable be fully retracted.
