  • The Original Xbox was Microsoft's first entry into the console market and they entered with a bang. The system itself is probably the closest we've ever been to a PC in a box even to this day with modern consoles. The Xbox was the most powerful console of the generation and brought some amazing features to the console space including fully featured online. Today we'll be taking apart the Xbox and taking a look inside at the motherboard and chips.

      I never understood why Nintendo didn't just put a HDD in the WiiU, they could have just gone with a 500GB one, those were really cheap then.

    • @zacharystevens6193
      @zacharystevens6193 6 років тому +30

      Matthew Wells Nintendo did not go with an HDD because they are loud, slow, big and have a high failure rate. The Wii U was barely bigger than the original Wii which was amazing at the time do to how much stronger it was. Nintendo would not have had enough space to fit it along with them traditionally preferring internal memory storage which is the future anyway basically SSD’s. On top of that it supported external hard drives outside the box, so I don’t get why that was a problem.

      My launch PS3's 60GB HDD still works, my 360's HDD survived to work in 6 other units, my PC has a 5 year old HDD in there along with others, my old laptop from 2005 still has a working HDD. I've never heard of big failure rates with HDDs minus certain batches.
      Why is supporting external HDD's a problem when you include almost no memory? Because that's MORE expense on top of buying the device in question.
      Look at it this way: Switch retails for $300 bucks right? No. you need to buy a micro SD card to get any milage out of it. I got a 128GB one and that cost me an extra $50...ON SALE. So instead of buying a game, I had to buy storage because they decided to include less storage than my PS3 from 2006. 1 digital game on my WiiU and it's filled.
      Even buying games physical when they sell them that way, I'm still using 26GB of storage, I don't see how you CAN'T see that's a problem. Also, if the internal storage goes bad on WiiU or Switch, you're borked. You can't easily swap it out.

    Some of my best gaming memories are on the OG; Jade Empire, KOTOR 1&2, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Halo 2, Fable, Morrowind. The good old days where Xbox had amazing exclusives. Now if you have a PC you basically have an Xbox as well.

    Man, I love the original Xbox. It was my console of choice back in the day (I had a PS2 as well but only used that for exclusives at the time) and I still use it to play stuff like the old Burnout games and OutRun 2. Unfortunately, our PAL region systems were severely hampered in terms of potential because Microsoft disabled the progressive scan option and we couldn't use resolutions beyond 480i/576i, but that's easily fixed with mods and homebrew. I softmodded my Xbox a couple of years ago, and it was pretty awesome to finally see those old Xbox games running at 480p and even 720p!

      @@almighty151986 So what resolution does Amped 2 run at when it's in 720p? And don't say 480p because it can also run at 480p widescreen and it is obviously blurry compared to its native 720p mode. And the Xbox has no scaler unlike the Xbox 360 onward.

    • @jokerzwild00
      @jokerzwild00 5 років тому +18

      @@almighty151986 this is absolutely incorrect. Using component cables the original Xbox has many games which render natively at 720p and a handful which do 1080i. Some bizarrely output a 4:3 image at 720p, like Soul Calibur 2. Tony Hawk 4 does 16:9 720p and it is immediately obviously that you're looking at a HD image. It's true that many were only 480p even in widescreen, like Halo 2, but there were definitely some native 720p and 1080i games on it. I won't ask you to just take my word for it, you're already posting on the internet so look it up for yourself this info is widely available.

    I actually sold my PS2 because of the Xbox. The deal breaker for me was when I saw my friend playing Splinter Cell 1 on it. The graphics were amazing, especially the lighting. The PS2 and the Gamecube couldn't do that game justice the way Xbox did, which if you compare that version to the PC are virtually identical. I missed out on a lot of great PS2 exclusives for sure, but I never regretted trading up for the Xbox over it because it was such a great system. Glad to see it get some love.

    The build of the Xbox, which yours is either a 1.1 or newer (easy way to tell is yours has an ATX plug power supply, the 1.0 used an AT style plug, single rail), used a different fan than the original 1.0 which has a 3 pin fan. Also the systems originally came with 8gb HDD but they upped it to 10gb, but partitioned them to 8gb still.

    I had the trace corrosion problem in my main XBOX 1.1. The clock cap had leaked and thus destroyed all of the traces leading to the front panel buttons (power and open dvd tray).
    I eventually discovered that I could fix it by wiring up the power and open dvd tray pins from the yellow header connector to some points in a PIC which controlled those signals and instructed the console to either turn on or open the DVD tray. Despite this, my console has been running great and it now serves as a media playback device of choice. Very solid performance for media playback out of this box, a usb socket mod i made to which i then plugged in a cheap chinese USB remote control running with XBMC, + pretty amazing games running from its local hard drive make it a more than decent HTPC for the price.

      The problem with them is the clock capacitor WILL leak and that can cause damage to the motherboard. The one in the video looks like a 1.6 model which doesn't have that problem, but if you get a 1.0 - 1.5 then you run the risk of getting a leaking cap... As long as it hasn't damaged the traces on the board or corroded any of the surface mounts its pretty easy to remove and clean up (it doesn't need to be replaced).
      The capacitors close to the PSU and CPU will probably also need replacing (they probably got replaced in the 'referb' of this one).
      The last thing is if the Xbox has a Foxcon PSU then its prone to dry arcing as the solder joints are the only thing holding the plug to the PCB. Over time the solder cracks, the joints arc and the PSU 'dies'.
      Once again, a pretty easy fix where you just re-solder the joints and reinforce the plug if you want to be thorough.

    My mom was real strict on how much we were allowed to play games, so at the time I didn't get a lot of use out of the XBOX despite having some great games on it. I remember one Christmas she bought us Halo 2 and my brother and I begged her to let us play it, only for us to fire it up and it hit us with the red ring of death. Years later I pulled it out the basement and it miraculously worked, but not for long...now it won't even turn on, and when you hit the power button it makes this faint whirring sound for a second. It's one of the only systems I've owned that I've opened up and not been able to fix no matter what I did. Most of the games work on my 360, so I haven't really looked back since...Awesome video, I had some good times with this thing even if it was shortlived and super frustrating to try to fix and then scrap.

    The hard drives were not all 10 gigs. they ranged from 8 to 20 gigs, depending on if they were refurbished, or what parts were cheap when they made it. they were all partitioned to the same size, oddly enough. the OS was a stripped down version of XP and only needed 2-3 gigs of space to run.

    It came with an 8.4Gb HDD, not 10. The later revisions may have used 10 depending on the availability/price of the 8.4s.
    The P3 chip was also slightly modified, but I can't find out how.
    I've just ordered a couple of the 2.5v super capacitors for my xboxes. They both leaked, thankfully nothing was damaged.

    I would love for Microsoft to use the same startup animation program for the newer Xboxes.
    Because today it’s just a video file that is played, whereas on the OG Xbox it was an in system animation. It was cool and todays systems are more than powerful enough to do it.

      You mean the backwards compatibility? Two things that have killed it for me since the One came out; having to install the dics before playing, and it being restricted to only a select number of titles. That means some of my favourite games from last-gen, like Skyrim and Batman: Arkham City are unplayable on a system that has backwards compatibility as a selling point.

      I've been actually looking for some of that 'original hardware,' namely a PS1 so I can play the early Metal Gear and Silent Hill games, and backwards compatibility is important for two reasons. Firstly, it's fucking near-impossible to actually get that original hardware for less than the price of a current-gen console. Secondly, backwards compatibility gives a clear indication of progress over history. You can play past and present games on the same system, side-by-side to see what improvements were made and what could have been kept. All those lessons are forgotten if you ignore the gaming history that came before.

    It actually does not use an off the shelf P3, its more of a hybrid Coppermine P3 and a Celeron. Also, the nVidia chipset in the Xbox was originally designed for AMD's CPU's, which eventually is why we got the nForce. The GPU is also similar in nature to the Geforce 3, however a tad bit more powerful.

    you got it wrong about the RAM, it was actually four chips at 16mb a piece, two on top of the board and two on the bottom of the board. There are also four more empty RAM slots on the version 1.0 through 1.4, two top, two bottom. You can also recognize the 1.6 by the Xcalibur video chip as well as the upgraded, re-positioned clock capacitor, and removed RAM expansion slots.

    You said that they did a retention lever on the CPU. Yes and no. There were several versions of the motherboard over time as parts became cheaper over time and/or MS was trying to be smarter about the parts they used). I have the original v1.0 motherboard which was the only one to have a heatsink with a fan (these fans were known to die, so they quickly moved to a crappy heatsink in the next couple models before moving up to the better heatsink you see in your model).

    My favorite feature of any console I’ve ever owned is the ability to rip your cd’s to the Xbox hard drive, and then listen to your music in certain games. I’ll never forget playing gta 3, and figuring out that I could listen to my own music. Idk why they removed that feature. I was so disappointed when I found out my Xbox one, my one X, and my series x can’t do what my OG Xbox could do.. oh well, I love my box’s regardless.

    Amazing 👏👏👏 This console blew my mind as a kid. Halo, GTA, So many cool Star Wars games. I remember playing Jet Set Radio and NFS Underground 2 at a friends house. Call of Duty Finest Hour. Rollercoaster Tycoon on Xbox! And I was convinced the hard drive was infinite, just never ran out of storage. And you could rent actual games from a shop near by. What an age it was! Recently went back to experience original PGR 1 and 2. I loved 3 and 4 so much on next generation Xbox 360. Also Xbox original MadCatz controllers were cool back in the day!

    On the Pentium 3. Just a quick FYI that no one seems to remember. It's not actually a 'full' P3. You may have noticed the 128 next to the core speed of 733. The 128 is the amount of cache and desktop Pentium 3 had more. If I remember correctly, mobile Pentium 3 (or at least a sub set of) also had reduced cache which is how it managed to keep the Pentium 3 name and not be branded as a Celeron.

    I still have my Original Xbox Halo clear green edition. It's a very solid system. I worked at a Family owned Game Store at the time, and we would repair consoles. PS2 (best selling console of all time) systems would come in for repairs constantly. The Original Xbox and Gamecube hardly ever came in for repairs. I like the weight of the console and it's modular design. Microsoft Live was amazing when it came out. Microsoft really did not make money on console, I think it was a loss leader. The 360 would of been profitable if not for all of it's issues with it's form factor and overheating problems. I believe the Xbox one is the first Microsoft system to turn a profit. Microsoft (Bill Gates) has invested a lot of time and money to get where they are at now and I hope in the future they have even more success.
