Israel's army has a very particular characteristic: they are one of the armed forces with the highest ratio of reservists to available troops. This allows them to mobilize an extremely large army very quickly, especially considering Israel's small demographic size.
Now, however, the military reserve could be in danger: compulsory service in the army is becoming less and less popular in Israeli society. In this video we tell you how the key pillar of the Israel Defense Forces works and also the threat it now faces.

Regardless if it is a war crime or not does not mean it's right or wrong. These things are subjective. Objectivity of right and wrong rarely applies in people's logic when it comes to faith, race, or politics. My comment was a joke, because most of what is considered a war crime today had been committed in the past but those events go unpunished because they weren't considered war crimes then. On the subject of conscription, one of the more interesting cases is that of Singapore. It continues to maintain a conscription system and large base of reservists; resulting in one of the highest total number of military personnel per capita in the world when including reservists (approximately 50 per 1,000 or 5% of the population). Yet, unlike the likes of Taiwan or the two Koreas, Singapore is in a relatively stable geopolitical situation where it does not have any major nearby adversaries that it has to be prepared to defend against.

Keep in mind, if everyone used Israel's logic, we'd be in a nuclear winter right now. 1 - before the war there was a protest in Israel, that included reservist (usually from high and jobs within the IDF - pilots, intelligence etc.) refusing to serve.
2 - from the beginning of the war, the IDF actually had to turn down reservists who showed up because it didn't have the resources to use all of them, as there was too many of them.

The Gaza Strip is a small piece of land 41km in length and 6 - 12km in width. Military experts in the west thought the IDF would finish the ground invasion in couple of weeks, specially it was superseded by 3 weeks of extensive bombardment from the air by Israel powerful Air Force (provided by the US and paid for mostly by US tax payers). Now, 5 months into the invasion, the resistance is still fighting back and infecting casualties. This is quite impressive when one considers the intelligence capabilities and all the military hardware Israel has deployed. Question.
With the advance of technology, why does the mikitary still depend on young people? Isn't it time to use people of 40 - 60 years old to combat duty instead?
Sure they are physically "decreased", but technology can make up to that. And given their life experience, they are less likely to engage in reckless actions.
Ants, bees, termites, they use this concept to make sure the youth with all their potential, won't be exposed to unnecessary danger.

I guess older people are weaker true, but they are ALSO the ones who have the money and the political capital to stop themselves from being killed. Young adults are more disposable and can have their career or education disrupted without hurting the economy as much as a person who due to their age, might have more property and a higher position in their job. Plus ideology, young people are more open to changes to their life and radicalizable
Basically their present worth to society is less valued than their future economic potential. Young people are worth less to society/government/economy than middle aged people. We are not as efficient as bee colonies.

Your final conclusion that there is a decrease in motivation due to an increase in the quality of life is very wrong. In my humble opinion, there are two completely different main reasons for this.
    1. Not all of the Jewish public mobilizes, the ultra-orthodox do not, which creates great resentment in the public that does mobilize.
    2. We have a disgraced right-wing government that won in the end by 0.5%. The same government tried to turn us into Hungary or Poland with dictatorial laws that led more than 10% of the citizens to protest for almost a year. The reserve volunteers (who do not have to serve by law) announced that they would stop volunteering if the government did not shelve the coup.
These people were the first to jump to the front on 7.10.
The army is one of the only things on which there is a broad consensus in Israel and it is not going anywhere anytime soon.

I usually like your videos but this one missed the mark. You correctly noted Israelis motivation to fight for their state, religion, culture and way of life. However, what was incorrect, imo, was your explanation for the previous decline in the appeal of military service in Israel. Most of the problem lied not in the disparate living standards between middle to upper class civilian life vs. military duty. QOL and pay were definitely issues but the actual draft period is a rather short duration and thus mandatory service is not a huge economic sacrifice in peacetime. Instead the problem mainly lies in the unequal burden sharing among Israelis for military duty. For example the general lack of Haredi participation lowers enthusiasm among other Israelis to acquiesce to the draft. Also there is a bit of a divide between combat troops and support troops in high tech roles. The latter tends to benefit much more in the job market (after the war) from their IDF participation while the former bears more of the risk. Nonetheless, the overall motivation to defend the state is very strong. It's a difficult region and everyone understands that their fates are interconnected. Am Yisrael Chai.

Many are fist or send generation migrants from Europe or America. On the other hand Palestinian genetic analysis reveals origins in the Levant region, also Palestinians have lived in the region since before the creation of Israel (the actual state today), they hold unique cultural practices and self identify as native peoples- this alone separates them as native peoples to the land. As people are dispersed in other places, there's of course a mix in the gene pool. You know what else they have? a more European look, compared to someone who never left the Levant. You know what Europeans told Jews during the 19th and 20th century? That they have a Jewish and less European (compared to them) look.
Regarding the Palestinians - there was some Arab population in the Area since the days of Mohamad, as there was some Jewish population (the "Old Yishuv") since before Jesus. But as the majority of Jews in Israel in 1948 were indeed immigrants of the prior 100 years, the majority of Arabs there were themselves immigrants from Egypt and Saudi Arabia (and many have family names indicating this) during the 19th and 20th century. They were called after the land (a name given by others, not them), not the land after them. To say that they "hold unique cultural practices and self identify as native peoples" is really laughable. Ask a Palestinian to name one important Palestinian figure, he wouldn't be able to go farther than Arafat. They were thousands of families and tribes, with more connections to outside groups and countries than to themselves, but no nation whatsoever. The only thing that made them a nation was losing their homes in 1948.

The israelis don't have a need for a large reserve force. The tacit reason why they do is part of the social regimentation of society as a whole. Hence young people who just got out of active duty understood that large amounts of reserves were not required in the new vision of the IDF.

You failed to highlight two very important factors among the data you provided: 1) Unlike any other modern military of any other developed nation (as you mentioned those) Israel is the ONLY ONE that has a healthy birthrate. In all of the other examples (South Korea and such) any conflict that they may face is a forever lost of whoever that dies in war (as that is what negative birthrate does to any country). Hence Israel has a strong position no other developed country can have. (yes, Israel close enemies has an even higher birthrate).
    2) Almost HALF of Israel population (between 45 to 50%), proper Israel citizens DO NOT MAKE THE COMPULSORY military service: This number is reached when you add up the Haredi Jews (that, by the way, are increasing in proportionate numbers year after year), Israeli Arabs, Druzes, Bedouins and all the people who may be excepted whether for physical or psychological issues. This is a HUGE proportion. If Israel were to end such exceptions, the reservists' numbers could (theoretically) almost double. Yes, you could have to change the whole religious an ideological panorama (you don't want people in the military that will whether boicot you or be so against any war that would be dead weight) that those are things that Israel would have to consider if it wants to be the equal society that makes no differences among its citizenry.
Plus, integrating such population in the military could lessen the burden on some of the people, mentioned in the video, whose skills are required. The Haredi Jews (for instance) are not people who are well integrated on the market place (worse, they are subsidized) so it's not like them, doing service, would impact Israel's economy as it does taking away those specialized on technical industries. Etc.

As someone who served in the reserves in this war for the past 4 months let me make a few things clear:
    A) I am a CPA and in all my job interviews the fact I served in combat was always the thing all the company's found the most compelling in my CV. The skills you pick up from going though combat training makes you more valuable
    2) all salaried employees make the exact salary they would make in their civilian jobs from the government. In addition they get a special grant based on the amount of days they served. All self employed get what the company made in the avrge of the past months plus 20 percent. Most people come out making more then they would have. that being said, business owner can still suffer if the company cant recover after the war from their leave.
    3) the fact that in past people wanted to change manditory service was because they felt October 7 was not possible. That statistic is irrelevant now.
    4) motivation for serving is sky high. We have student lawyers plumbers, customer support reps, park rangers , programers you name it all serving together. It's hardest on those with kids at home and students. but almost no one left, and we are all ready when we are called again.

This video really gets a lot wrong. It mainly derives the wrong conclusions from some facts, but at the end actually completely gets the facts wrong:
"The huge wave of protests... the reservists began to be diverted, especially to routine security activities... in other words - fewer and fewer reservists are called to the front lines".
Actually, prior to the 2006 war, reservists were used more and more for "routine security activities" during their reserve duty, and got almost no training time. As a result, part of the complaining was that they were unprepared for battle duty when the war started. After the war this was pretty quickly changed completely, so reservists will be called (in no-war times) only for training and actual military activity (small operations, not security).
Not sure how you can release this video during a war in which reservists formed the majority of fighting forces on the ground...

As someone living in Israel and working in a successful international startup, I find it hard to reconcile the narrative presented in this video with the reality on the ground. Simply reading the New York Times doesn't afford a true understanding of the complexities here in Israel. 🙂
When the aggressors from Gaza initiated their assault, an overwhelming response from our reserve soldiers was immediate. Tens of thousands rushed to the battlefield even before being summoned, ready to risk their lives to protect our southern communities. Within just three days of the conflict's start, the mobilization of reserve soldiers surpassed 130%-signifying that 30% more individuals volunteered than were called upon, creating a logistical challenge to equip them promptly.
In our startup, several team members are currently fulfilling their reserve duties, now extending into the fifth month. The support for them and their families from everyone here is unequivocal. The morale within Israel and our backing for the IDF is at the highest I've witnessed in decades. Contrary to what the video's title might suggest, Israel is far from losing anything.
With divine support, we are committed to ending the Evil in Gaza. Our resolve remains unshaken as we continue our contributions towards enlightenment and progress worldwide.
