So sad to have to accept the passing of Pat. His music plays a big part in our family. My little 11 year old niece actually wrote her book report on his biography. I had been in contact with his booking agent to bring him to Texas before the pandemic and his illnesses.
Martino is a guitar legend, absolutely out of this world.

I had that VHS and the other volume back when I was a teenager in the mid 90's. I get them from an ad from Guitar World magazine. Took me years to understand Jazz guitar but I get it thanks to Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola instructional videos.
I watched this years ago... it was over a lot to absorb. Now it makes perfect sense. I’ll never look at a dominant chord the same way I did again.
I think it's a great way to learn and appreciate progress. Watching content that is so far out, only to return to it years later and find that you've now reached a point where it makes sense and really .. just confirms what you may already now know. I've had the same experience with this video myself.
Zappa held his arms and hand in the same position as Pat. What a great player and loss to the world. Your music is here forever though.

I like when he uses the phrase “areas of activity”, which seems so casual and simplistic, yet is anything but.
So helpful - thank you - a master player breaking down info into simple blocks in a manner that explains so much that lesser players can follow. This is the best chord grouping/ voicing lesson I have found and first I have seen that uses the dismissed as the key to unlocking the vault.- invaluable.

Mr. Martinos parental form concept expanded my understanding of harmony exponentially. Absolutely revalutionary. This process of lowering notes from diminished to automatically reveal all of the different qualities of seventh chords in all of their inversions just like a crystal expanding out from the center. Thank you Pat.
Barry Harris talks about this same idea, I think he calls it the family of dominants.

Man Pat Martino is really smart when explaining scales and modes and chords , it's like a college professor explain something to an elementary class lol
Everyone gets their click/ ah ha moment differently. You can see the guitar in so many ways. All that matters is if you get the “ah ha” moment, which will open the entire finger board

I think he is talking Same about Barry harris s family of 4dominant chord concept.
He converted Dorian mode for that.
Here’s a quick look at Martino’s
“SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORMS”.
There are 2; they are “symmetrical” because the 3-note Augmented triad is based on 3 major 3rds, and the 4-note Diminished 7th chord is based on 4 minor 3rds.
1) Play 554 on GBE for C+ or Caug.
Lower any one note by one fret; you “parent” 3 different major triads; raise it instead, you “parent” 3 minor triads (and the relative minors).
2) Now play 4545 on the DGBE for a Diminished 7th chord.
Lower any note?
Form 4 different Dominant 7th chords.
Raise it instead?
Form 4 different Half-Dim7 chords (min7b5).
- Martino has discovered some essential aspects of the guitar.
Who else noticed these things? Only Pat!

Yes. You can also play a minor7flat5 from the 3rd of a Dominant 7 and a Major 7 from the 7th of a Dominant its all still Mixo but Pat says he does not think of it modaly like this. Also if you play a minor Major7 from the fifth of the Dominant it gives you a #11.
Yep. Nothing new at all. Something Wes did all the time. And Pat transcribed from Wes.
Also if you play Dm over G7 you are simply playing D Dorian over G mixo. They are modes of the same scale! (C Maj)

Question for you brainiacs...i always thought the dom 7th strongly links with the 1 chord (ie: E7 to Amaj/m) but Pat's saying to play a minor a 4th below (ie: Bmin7 scale for E7) which would make it a Dorian if maj or locrian if minor. Am I right? And more importantly, why lol?
He likes the minor arpeggio. It highlights nice tones on that dominant. The Vmin of the V7. It also leads to the Imaj I think. Just slide down a whole tone …
Here is how think about it: Your example was Bmin7 over E7. The Bmin7 arpeggio is used as a substitution OVER E7. That means that our root note (= 1) is still E.
Bmin7 consists of the notes B, D, F# and A.
In relation to the root note E, the intervalls of these notes are 5, 7, 2 and 4. On the one hand, one could think that this sound is quite ambiguous since there is no 3rd. On the other hand, the underlying harmony (E7) gives us the information of the major 3rd. Therefore the mode is still mixolydian.
What is more, the usage of a minor arpeggio over a dominant 7th chord in the explained relation doesn't change its function as a dominant chord. So the link to the 1 chord is still there. This is not a contradiction. Hope this helps.
