you majorly hit the nail on the head with this one and the manga actually supports your interpretation heavily. As a manga reader, later on we actually DO get to see much more of kitas struggles with anxiety and conformity, not to mention her ryou infatuation slows down considerably. The entire thing with ryou always to me was infatuation vs bocchi being the reality.

Kita faked to play the guitar because she wanted to get close to Ryo, or rather what she knew Ryo was, the "cool bassist"
She wanted to learn the guitar in order to basically be in the band which goes back to the original intent of being close to someone she looked up to
Initially Kita would find everything Ryo does to be "cool", mostly due to the image she saw her as, but eventually she realizes Ryo isn't exactly that perfect as she thought she was, and as the series progresses you'd realize she doesn't seem to be as affectionate to Ryo as much as the first few episodes
Ironically, after seeing Bocchi, as time progresses and learning the guitar from her, she grows a very profound admiration for her, eventually her main goal of continuing to practice isn't even to stay in the band anymore, it's because she wants to be like her
To put it simply, she fell for Ryo initially due to how "cool" she thought she was, only to find out that she's quite weird herself, and the completely unassuming bocchi ends up being the one she finds "the coolest", as she says in the performance
Okay so on this song, yeah it's a song written by Bocchi, and in this case she writes how she wishes to be like Kita, the (sometimes literal) shining star, with so many friends, that she feels that she could never shine like her
Meanwhile on the other hand, the message works for Kita towards Bocchi, she feels that Bocchi shines so brightly, how amazing she is when she performs, and the broken string scene perfectly encapsulates her feelings:
Kita has been practicing so much for this performance, and she notices that Bocchi is panicking right before her solo, she steps up, essentially doing the solo to the best of her abilities, but I think her internal monologue was what really solidified how she felt towards Bocchi
That she's been practicing so hard to be just like her, and she knows that Bocchi is a diamond in the rough, wanting the person she looks up to the most to truly shine

There is a scene in the manga a few chapters after the end of the anime where Kita spends an entire day with Bocchi and even going to sleepover with her with an emotional talk between the two and I bet if season 2 happens it’ll be really great scene
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but I don't think the "even if it's not a full moon" line is about skill. I think it's also about love.
Kita is not sure about how Bocchi feels, with this line I think she's saying that even if you don't feel the same way towards me, even if this is not the same love as I feel towards you. I still want to stand next to you ("become a constellation") and stay friends ("don't undo the line connecting us") no matter what happens in the future ("no matter how brightly you shine").

Absolutely fell in love with this song when I first heard it. Canonically, Bocchi writes all the songs. It doesn't mean though, it can't have different meanings for the beholder, IE: Bocchi and Kita.

I also think the song actually has a third meaning, the third being for Nijika & Seika. Stary sky could also be a reference to Stary the live house. Seika did say in chapter 61 is "there will be as many bands as there are stars in the sky" and "I was hoping this place shines so brightly it reaches our mother" refering to their mother. Under that context, the lyrics do fit to an extent, just in a more literal concept.
This song its beautiful, the first time I reed the lyrics I thought that it was a song from Bocchi to Kita but thinking that is a two-sided love song is even more beautiful. 😭😭😭

WAit this makes so much sense. It makes so much sense why she likes Ryo in the first place because of Ryo's confidence in her own individuality and she explicitly says it in one episode where she likes how "wild" Ryo is. Kita for me is by far the most interesting character to look into. On the surface she seems very basic compared to the rest of the cast, shallow. But I think you really need to approach kita's character with a view based more in real people to understand what she might be going through.
Yup, I think Kita is a really interesting and complex character, perhaps even more than Bocchi. A really nice difference from the usual genki girl

in the manga kita actually stated herself that the reason why she wanted to join the band was not only because she was drawn in by ryo's appearance, but also because kita thinks of herself as someone who lives a fulfilling but dull life and therefore was envious of ryo who was walking down an irregular path unlike her
Funny enough I have a close friend who is like Kita, extremely sociable and many people are acquainted to him but going through college he realized most people he thought was friends was just surface level and apparently I’ve been the only person who’s stuck by him through his best and worse moments and that to me is quite a privilege to have. Well to be fair I also connect with him on a personal level. I may have best friends that walk a fine line between surface level and personal level that I very much enjoy, but this one dude is definitely a homie for life
I went into this video with only the vague summary/interpretation in mind that it was a Bocchi-to-Kita song, which would obviously make sense given Bocchi is the band's primary lyricist. But I'm definitely open to and honestly a bigger fan of this primary interpretation that this is a Kita-to-Bocchi song (and it being both at the same time). I felt there was more that could be said though, but it took me a while to pin down what it exactly was, so here goes.
Why, or perhaps how, does Kita have these strong feelings towards Bocchi specifically? You've done the legwork of explaining most of that, but I think one thing that gets overlooked is just how much time Kita actually spends with Bocchi, and what they usually do together. In the few months between the band forming and them performing in the school festival, Bocchi tutored Kita in playing the guitar. That much is said in the show, but what isn't stressed is that they seemingly practiced every day after school, and considering Kita went from zero knowledge, to being able to save her bandmate during a live set, I'd say that tutoring was intensive and Bocchi herself was a serious teacher.
This means that Kita, from quite literally the first day they properly met, has been around the Bocchi who is a guitar pro. Kita has known the side of Hitori that other people don't often see, the side of Hitori that can solo carry the band with an improv solo, and the side of Hitori that can teach her skills to a complete novice like her. Kita clearly admires Hitori in the show, but inferring this detail leads one to realize that Kita might just be the only person who is familiar with a Hitori who is in her element. And at that, Kita absolutely loves to see that person, and wants the rest of the world to see them too.
So, it must be painful for Kita to watch someone she deeply admires struggle to express herself. This lends an additional layer of gravitas to Kita's motive to support Bocchi - especially in relation to the school festival. Bocchi had given up on submitting the application form to have the band perform at the festival, because she was far too anxious to make that step. Kita knowingly and deliberately went behind Bocchi's back to submit the form herself, and she is actually ashamed of herself for doing that. Why though? Why does she hide the fact she did it on purpose? Well, if she had acted objectively for Hitori's personal growth, she wouldn't have any reason to hide that fact. However she didn't do it solely for Hitori's benefit. Kita was also driven by her own feelings for Hitori and what she wants for her. In Kita's mind, she did something selfish to someone that she adores, acting on feelings she hasn't even expressed, and the shame of that is what kept her from coming clean immediately.
With this song we can view it as Kita's feelings finally being laid bare. It's a song that reveals so much vulnerability all at once. A confession equally of Kita's admiration of Hitori, and of her very real fear that she might be left behind in the future. Kita holds nothing back in these lyrics, and this is why this song hits so well when viewed as a song from her perspective: it reveals emotional turmoil in probably the last person one might expect to find that in. Why would anyone expect the happy and outgoing Kita to be unable to find the right way to say something? To one of her friends no less?
The song's appearance in the anime as _the_ song where Kita saves Hitori is also a brilliant stroke. In the midst of confessing via lyrics just how she feels about Hitori, Kita instantly proves she means every word by backing her up and covering for her on-stage. She views Hitori as a person with burning potential, and is scared of never reaching the same heights as her, and yet she saves Hitori's moment to shine. Kita's love for her (be it the love for one's friends or the love towards one's romantic interest) wins out over her fear of parting. If it were not for this small resolution to Kita's inner conflict, this critical moment in Hitori's character arc, and the climax of the entire season, would not have been possible. That's just brilliant.

This is such a brilliant look at Hitori and Kita's teacher-student relationship that wasn't shown as much in the anime. Love it!
What I find really cool about the star/shadow comparison for Kita and Bocchi is that in their personalities you would expect it to be the opposite. Kita is shining most of the time, and Bocchi lurks in the shadows. But in their eyes it's the other way around. Really cool.
Watching this solidified the idea in my mind that their relationship (ship-wise and serious-wise) is so good and definitely with a lot of layers that could be fun picking apart! I think it would be great if the future chapters of the manga gives Kita more backstory and maybe bokita's relationship progresses (whether it's platonic or not) along with it.
I'm not a manga reader, but I really do hope they continue developing this relationship, I think it's beautiful!

Some of what you've said I've thought of as well. I think Kita isn't just your typical extroverted character. She has some hidden insecurities like you pointed out, and we were first introduced to her as the girl who ran away from the band too. That shows that in a way she's similar to bocchi, insecure and trying to hide. While Ryo and Nijika have always acted like somewhat mentors to Bocchi, Kita on the other hand seems to be on the same level in terms of feeling inadequate. That could be why she is shown to admire Bocchi so much near the end of the show and why she wants to support and show how great she is. Kita has been helped by Bocchi in many ways, and she feels like she needs to repay the favour. They are both building each other up as peers compared to Nijika and Ryo who are a bit more seasoned when it comes to bands and performing music (albeit they're in the same boat at the end of the day as still growing and developing). All of this culminates to Kita wanting to the best for Bocchi and also admiring how she's slowly trying to come out of her shell, something Kita is probably trying to do in her own circumstances too.

you absolutely nailed how kita could feel "alone," as well as the importance of time and other symbols in the song! the parallels are fucking. godly. ai higuchi got chops. no matter how bright i shine/no matter how bright you shine are the most evident phrases, showing so much growth and confidence over the course of the song.
i think it's fucking beautiful that bocchi writes the lyrics (or should, canonically?) as a wish to shine together, and as kita sings it, the performance of the song is an actualization of that wish. as much as it fucking can this song has an arc both within itself and within the show. what absolute fucking drive and passion brought this song, let alone all of bocchi into existence.

It's cool how Bocchi writes their songs, and Kita sings-it puts emphasis on how the admiration between the two of them is reciprocated (in terms of guitar skills on one side and social skills on the other). But they don't notice each others' feelings of admiration and insecurity at all.

I personally don't think kita is interested in bocchi romantically, but I'm also certain she does admire her and love her as a friend. Her arc feels like it leads up to kita fully embracing her relationship with bocchi, showing her how much she has grown thanks to her and how she's ready to support and follow her up the fartest star.

I've never listened to Bocchi the Rock's music outside of the series, but you caught my attention.
Very nice analysis of the song! The song is definitely my favorite from the anime for several reasons and the lyrics are definitely one of them. I just remember reading them for the first time and realizing that this is the Bokita national anthem. Kita definitely has a lot of insecurities that she doesn't show and I like that a lot of people interpret her as an extrovert with insecurities in contrast to Nijika who is an extrovert without insecurities (and then extrapolate that to Bocchi who is an introvert with insecurities vs Ryo who is an introvert without insecurities. You can even tell by their hairstyles, how Bocchi and Kita are the ones with bangs, as if they want to hide something). Everyone in Kessoku Band has that extra layer of depth to their character that people often miss and this song definitely highlights Kita's.
Also would like to point out that you kinda hit a lot of the future plot points in the manga and potential S2 lol

I'm sure you've seen the theory about the anxious/confident and introvert/extrovert axises in the girls' personalities. Like Ryo being an introvert and proud of it and Ichiyo being an extrovert but afraid to lose it all.
I like to add layers on top of it. Each girl has multiple roles in the band. Each girl also have reasons to be in the band, something they want.
Bocchi as the writer of the lyrics recognises this. Ryo Is a music nerd. It is what makes her tick. She lives for music she want to make good music and she will not compromise on this. Nijika willed this band to exist. Without Nijika there is no band. Bocchi doesn't know why yet, but she recognises that the prime mover of the band is Nijika. Nijika got Ryo to be in the band. Nijika literally dragged her to the club to be in the band. Bocchi herself wants to feel loved and music, that band (pun very much intended) is the way she will get that. Being guitarhero was nice, but it was empty because it wasn't Bocchi, insecurity and weirdness included.

Bocchi sees how guarded, almost threatened Kita feels towards her. Kita is still calling her Gotoh-san, how Kita says will never be as good a guitarist as she is. Kita was was the first one to twll how she loved her music, no ifs or buts, the only thing she's ever been proud of. She also sees Kita is uneasy with her role in the band. That she doesn't really know why she's in the band, really.

Bocchi is telling her that she knows what it is being alone while being admired. She's guitarhero. She has 30k subscribers on UA-cam, ratings Kita would probably kill for. But her life was still empty untill Nijika yanked her out of that park.

Bocchi the Rock! is the only story I've heard of where the characters true feelings towards eachother are convayed through the music they write and sing, not the things they do and say. I love while a character may pretend to be one way on the surface being unable to truly express themselves, they are able to do so through a medium as beautiful as music. Music really is the language that truly connects us

That is true, but a few of the other songs in the kessoku band album don't seem like something Bocchi would write so I tried thinking outside the box. Bocchi to Kita then possibly being 2 sided from there definitely also works though!
For me, karakara is written and sang by Ryo. Nani ga warui is written and sang by Nijika.
The songs are related to other members. Maybe Bocchi wrote the songs after taking inspiration from them.
In the manga it seems like Bocchi consults and shares her opinion with other members more often, so maybe when she's writing their character songs she's not the only one thinking of the lyrics.

가사 너무 좋은것 같음. 키타가 보치에게 하는 말도 되고, 보치가 키타에게 하는 말도 되고, 6시 8시 이 두 문단의 해석이 다양하고 모두 예쁜 내용의 가사임. 가사도 노래도 애니메이션도 좋음. 가사 내용을 알고 나니까 라이브 장면을 보면서 내가 진짜 저기 현장에 있는것 같고 볼때마다 디테일을 확인하면서 새로운 느낌을 받음. 처음 애니에 대해 들었을때는 그저 양산형 애니에 불과하지 않을까 생각했는데 이건 진짜 각 캐릭터가 너무 입체적이고 캐릭터가 살아있는것 같음. 완벽한 명작 애니.
For me, this song is my top 3 love song list, at first, i just love the melody of this song, and after knowing the meaning, i really fall in love with it. Like you say in the end, this song can be interpreted in 2 ways, from kita's POV and bocchi's POV, and i think it's the best way to interpreted in both ways at the same time. A little bit of manga spoiler below this :)
This is just my hope, but i really wish they gonna use this song again (if the anime continued) especially after kita sleepover part, because i really think the origin of this song is from that chapter, where's both share their problem and understand each other more

KIta REALLLY grew on me after seeing the lyrics and realizing she was singing it with bocchi in mind and bocchi writing it about kita. Also her va just has an insanely nice voice too lol

I wanna come back to this video to leave a newer comment to... declare something. For the entirety of last year, I've ultimately given up on making my life better.
I "accepted" that I'm just too incompetent for a life without loneliness, pain, and suffering. This feeling of indifference was challenged one day, and I tried to change for the better within a month, during my semester break. I failed. *HARD*. I started feeling fear, self hatred and really dank anxiety. Feelings I never thought I'd experience outside of my suffering in college. I felt like giving up again.
What's funny is that I had a counselling session planned initially because I wanted to boast about my initial drive to change.
Haha... by the time that counselling session was about to begin, a month had passed and I was metaphorically laying on the ground defeated... again.
After a counselling session where my neck felt heavy and my eyes were glued to the floor, I was reminded of how to actually try to change when you have no friends who stand by you.
You indentify what needs changing.
You strategise ways to take it down.
You test out your strategies and adjust them depending on their effectiveness,
And hopefully, after enough time, repetitions, relapses, perseverance, adjustments, and determination, change happens.
So here I am, once again, standing on my feet, metaphorical sword in hand to try to change for the better again.
Wanting to get friends is a part of my desire for change, but ultimately, I just want my life to get better.
Having friends like Bocch to help me change would be nice, but unfortunately, that is a luxury I don't have.

But I can look to the future with wonder and excitement as I have my own story to write.

Jokes aside, I completely understand that change is very difficult. A lot of us have this ideal self we want to become in our mind yet have no idea how to even go about reaching it. I think this is why Bocchi really resonated with a lot of people, not just the social anxiety part but particularly the changing step by step part, something a lot of us dream to do. I always thought the song was Bocchi sharing her feelings about Kita. All four mainline songs are about a member of the band but all four of them are written by Bocchi (manga readers say Kita writes some later but that's not the case yet), so it makes sense that after putting her own feelings into words with the "Guitar, Loneliness, and Blue Planet" Bocchi wanted to write songs dedicated to her bandmates and tried to match their feelings while putting something of her own.
Lyrics make sense as Bocchi sees Kita as a star, as an idol (with Kita-aura). She is the cheerful, popular girl that Bocchi wishes she was but thinks she can never be. And we know from the "alcholosim flashforward" and the following talk with Nijika that one of the biggest fears Bocchi has right now is losing her friends in the future, being left behind. And the lyrics mention that they'll get separated eventually but the writer is still happy that they were together once and hopes they'll be together again at some point.

Kita and Bocchi are two sides of the same coin. While Bocchi is physically isolated from the rest of the world due to her anxiety, Kita is spiritually isolated because because she doesn’t know how to live for herself.

the reason i point this out is because the translation shown in the video may allow the alternate theory that the song is meant to be a dialogue between the two, whereas the actual lyrics clearly indicate that they are written from a single perspective

Kita is likely looking at Bocchi to keep time with the music when they play, not for romantic attraction. As a musician, you often glance at your band mates when playing to make sure you’re on time.

Bocchi and Kita being being 2 sides of the same coin is also supported by their character design and their developments in the story. Both Kita and Bocchi have a pigtail, while Kita's pigtail is tied to the left, Bocchi's is tied to the right. Bocchi is always wearing their iconic tracksuit, a sign that she doesn't understand fashion at all, meanwhile everytime we see Kita she is always wearing beautiful clothes that looks fashionable, And pink is just red but brighter. In the start of the story Bocchi has guitar skills but no social skills, meanwhile Kita has social skills but no guitar skills. As the story progress both of them works on their weakpoint, reaching the climax at the school festival, where Bocchi managed to perform in front of her school, and Kita managing to improv a guitar solo. Truly the best lesbian couple ever written

You forget one thing.... Bocchi wants to stay in the constellation and not have her talent push others away. After all, their stage is at club stary. A constellation named club and her fears of being pulled apart by outside forces of gravity that cause celestial bodies to drift apart.
