Whether you're religious or not, Eric Liddell is a great example of a man of principle, and that should be admired.
He is be a Saint. That level of faith serves as an inspiration to anyone who believes, regardless of religion.
Nobody ia able to narrate the way Nigel Havers does. FAMTASTIC, ENGAGING, a real PLEASURE
Chariots Of Fire changed my life forever because I became an Olympic champion in the Special Olympics and winning gold, silver, and bronze for running, basketball, softball throw, and baseball!!!!
Congratulations.
@@hannahrosa5485 Thank you so much
Glory to God!
Very well done, Benjamin.
@@georgegoodyear9631 Thank you so much
I am of Scottish and Confederate descent. I was raised Methodist as a child and teen. However, I was not BORN AGAIN. The scene where Liddell preaches from Isaiah 40.31 stuck in my heart after I saw this film. 3 years later I was BORN AGAIN and sealed by the HOLY SPIRIT by the LORD'S grace alone (Ephesians 2.8.9). The Word of the LORD goes out from him, accomplishes HIS purposes and does not return to HIM void.
(Note: all things happening today (2021) are happening because satan knows his time is short; Jesus' 2nd coming is very soon.)
I look forward to seeing all of you saints (John 3.3, 33-34) when we get to the KINGdom.
Amen. Thank God forever. Praise Jesus Christ Lord and Savior for all eternity. Come Lord Jesus soon. May we be faithful to You Lord and Your Word ✝️
The real magic is that sound track. I dare you to listen with an open heart and not feel inspired. It really makes you feel like greatness is possible.
This movie is permanently etched on my soul. I was born in 1979 and I was adopted when I was 2 years old. This movie is the very first movie my adopted parents ever took me to see.
Chariots is the perfect storm.
Everything came together.
It will always be my favourite film.
Sheer and utter perfection.
R.I.P. Ben Cross
As a young man in high school this movie was very moving and really motivated me as a track athlete. I was the first freshman to ever go to the state championship in 4 different events and by the time I was a senior I was a champion in the 300 hurdles. This movie was the inspiration I needed to work hard. I still remember it fondly now that I am in my 50s.
Eric Liddell’s Daughter did it for me! God got the GLORY! He yet lives! Then there came Abraham’s daughter!!!
RIP Vangelis Papathanissiou--the composer.
What inspiring history of Abrams and Liddell. The Brits should be proud as well as this American is. Greatness under stress is alive and well. Nigel Havers is a great commentator.
This is SO REFRESHING to watch, and actor that really is passionate about the story he helped to tell. Wow, I could watch this over and over. Thanks for posting this.
I remember the first time I watched this movie as they were running on the beach I noticed all the runners looked like they were having a good time until I saw the look on Ben Cross's face which looked like he was struggling a bit. Now seeing this video and listening to Ben's comment about the beach scene cracks me up.
I don't know why this movie and story rouses me so much! Love Eric Liddell's amazing Olympic win and Vangelis soundtrack to Chariots of Fire!
Muriah Holsten if you watch Liddell's triumph in the 400m you can see just how remarkable of a runner he was.
Harold Abrahams took the 100m and made it his "house". He lived in the distance of the short sprint. He had the look of someone with a chip on his shoulder -one with the drive to get his one goal accomplished.
Today the 6th of August 2021 it has been 9 years exactly that this documentary was released on UA-cam. Due to the Tokyo Olympic games, specially watching the track and field competitions, I remembered seeing, watching this amazing movie, "Chariots of Fire". I did not understand the drama back then ( on cassette VHS 1983-1985 ) , but the music stayed with me and surprisingly still does brings me lots of nostalgia. English is my second Language. Thank you for reading my this.
Thank you! I love this video and that you have chosen to talk about the real story.
Eric Liddell was a friend of my family and his family had befriended mine in China many decades ago.
When this movie came out we were all so excited to see it…
I hope people will find renewed interest in the movie because the message is still as clear now as it was then… And even more timely perhaps.
Eric did go back to China… And my family went also. My aunt and uncle spent decades building schools and hospitals before returning to Quebec to retire to the family home in Canadá.
Eric and his family were very much a part of the community of real missionaries who were working to build infrastructure for China.
We have pictures of my great aunt learning Chinese at the feet of a very old teacher.
Eric was a great man and the message of his life’s work is in the movie so beautifully created.
This is very beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I'm writing about Eric Liddell. Do you have any stories of Eric from China that were passed down?
Wonderful story! No one who sees the movie can ever forget the impression it makes!
Outstanding documentary. RIP Harold Abrahams. Buried only a few miles from where I live.
The movie was powerful in its telling of these two competitors and their individual as well as shared contexts. I come away with inspiration for the faith that drive Liddel and the passion that fueled Abrahams. Very grateful for this piece which gave deeper insight to who these these men were in real life and how they impacted their world and times and continue to do so today.
They got the Liddel story mostly right but the Abrahams story was mostly made-up.
Such a GREAT documentary. When an actor embodies a role like this he *IS* honoring history in a way no others can.
This documentary gives a great insight into the lives of the two great athletes commemorated by the film. Thank you for posting this! It deserves to be seen by more people.
An absolutely lovely documentary and a moving act of homage and reverence, as well as background research by actor Nigel Havers. Havers has been obviously changed by his participation in the film and he repays the good fortune of winning that role. Really uplifting! Thanks to all involved and thanks for posting.
Having been a victim of racism and the religious majority myself, Harold was my hero. He stood up to the establishment and anti-semitism and thumbed his nose at them. The need to prove myself a better man, physically, mentally and spiritually, than my tormentors, had driven me my whole life. Great movie and excellent documentary.
@The Anthropologist _Forensic Thank you for making that beautiful post. That's the true distinction of character, and you beautifully elaborated on it. There is a great book called "The Final Race" by Eric T. Eichinger, Eva Marie Everson that describes Eric Liddell's life.
@@lovesandservesjesuschrist6752 I've read that one, too, but my favorites are "For the Glory" , "The Flying Scotsman" , and "God's Joyful Runner." I consider each of those to be better than "The Final Race." "God's Joyful Runner" was actually written by Russell W. Ramsey and was endorsed by Eric's sister, Jenny, in the 1980s. Eric's daughter, Patricia, wrote the Foreword. I also like "Pure Gold" and I am enjoying reading Eric Liddell's own manuscript on Discipleship.

@@lovesandservesjesuschrist6752 Aw you're welcome. :) Thank you! Hi 5 back! Have a joyful day!
Not only that but he went on to have a good career as a sports writer and reporter, great man.
I love the story of Eric Liddell and how he remained true to his faith.
My brother alao went to Caius College! He died in 2005 and his siblings lived in South Africa. The shots of Cambridge brought him back to me. Thank you.
Without lists, so stupid, I've never loved a movie more than Chariots of Fire. It has every high professional standard, in acting, design, music, atmosphere, balance. Nostalgic.
I was ten when the film came out, but, despite loving the music, I didn't watch it until I was into my forties. After watching it, I thought: "Why did I wait so long? I love this movie!"
@@sharonjensen3016 It is a gripping type, old fashioned and appealing in style.
Excellent documentary! Thank you, Nigel! A wonderful example of natural presentation - something that's difficult to do. Anyone who's had the misfortune to hear Laurence Olivier presenting a documentary will realize how a great actor can come a cropper. Nigel never does!
Abrahams calling the Olympic 1500 meter race in 1936 reminds me of Al Michaels calling the U.S. hockey team's Miracle on Ice in 1980. It's a great story about great men; thanks for posting it for us Yanks.
Chariots of Fire should be required viewing for all grade school students.
I agree.
@@himilcelora5200 Copy that. It would be good for people of ALL ages.
I agree too !
Still gives me goosebumps
I agree 💯
It has been years since I last saw this movie. I almost forgot how good it is. Thanks for the reminder.
A wonderful presentation on a most important movie with the true story behind it. Thank you for sharing this! Thank you, Nigel, for your key part in both the movie Chariots of Fire and in this documentary. Super.
Every year I swear off doing another marathon and then this dam movie comes on TV one night...pulls me back in. "God made me fast and when I run I feel his pleasure." Best line in the movie
I've done a few Marathons in my time...and when I was flagging a bit and struggling I always thought of this Movie and certain lines from it especially " where does the strength come to finish the race...it comes from within "
what a fantastic docko as only the British can do man i had a tear
I’m a big fan of Chariots of Fire!!!
It’s completely unique, intense, and quietly powerful.
Superb. Both this documentary and especially the film.
I'm texting my soccer son thousands of miles away to inspire him as he has worked so hard decades in his quest for meeting the challenges despite the struggles, sufferings, and injuries he has endured.
this was simply great ..thank you🏅

Here's thanks from another grateful Yank from Pennsylvania :) I absolutely love Chariots of Fire! It was fascinating to learn more about the real stories of Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell! Thank you for posting this documentary. I, like the other commenter, wouldn't have otherwise been able to see it.
Superbly presented by Nigel Havers,,,,in his most pleasing manner. His easy self-effacing style is always a pleasure to watch in any interview or programme in which he appears. A great joy. Thanks for posting and best wishes.
+Kelly Dunn You are welcome Sir. Best wishes.
This documentary is a blessing. We should follow his example and follow in obedience to the truth and guidance of God in His Word as Eric did. Is very little how the day of the Lord is respected today. God bless you, hoping to find more good documentaries like this.
I weep every time I see any programme about Eric Liddell. A man of high principle and integrity. What am I prepared to give up for what I believe in! About ten years ago, I was in China. Turned the tele on and there was a programme about Eric Liddell. Though it was in Chinese, I watched and enjoyed to the end. Thank you for this documentary. Brings the whole story alive again.
Low budget film won Oscars and energized so many people!
Wonderful documentary - a truly fabulous movie.
I watched it in the early 80's while in the US Air Force. I was in my 20's now in my mid 60's it inspires me even more. It reminds me of my Trust and Hope in God , of jogging barefoot on the beach...very close to home. Watch it and let it inspire you if you have not. Do yourself a favor.
Guys like Liddlle, Abrahams, Paddock were amazing. In 1921 Paddock ran the 100 meter in 10.4. Just 0.8 of a second behind Usain Bolt's current world record. Paddocks record was done using the training of 90+ years ago and running on a track of sand and clay with leather cleats. I wonder what these gentlemen could have done running on a modern track with modern equipment with modern training?
Dam good I would like to believe!
bullshit
No starting blocks either. Digging a couple of holes for toe grips is not ideal.
There was a study which examined that very question. It found that had Jesse Owens been around today, he would be half a stride behind Usain Bolt.
At about 16:33, my favorite unscripted moment in a movie. Eric Liddell is speaking and he is interrupted by a cow mooing. Instead of getting flustered, actor Ian Charleston goes with it to create a perfect scene.
It's a lovely documentary good old Nigel Havers.
Eric Liddell is a hero of mine even since i first saw Chariots (i rented in on vhs as a child in the late 1990s from my local library in Loughborough if memory serves!)
Also i have a small connection to Eric Liddell, my Grandfather knew Eric and had a strong friendship with him. -They shared rooms together during Edinburgh University according to my grandfather's diaries (which my mum has) and i'm almost certain it was Eric that led my Grandad to Christ during Edinburgh. He became a minister later himself and led a church in Montrose, Scotland with his wife and my grandmother Sybil Donald
Sadly he died in 1991 a year or so before a was born
i would give anything to know from him more of what Eric was like in person.
Wonderful connection!
If you do a google search, there is a lot of information about Eric Liddell on line.
@@sharonsolana But googling is not the same as him hearing first hand stories from his grandfather who knew Eric Liddell personally. And googling isn't even as good as reading the best biographies on Eric Liddell.
@@theresamahfouz790 😊
Quite remarkable isn't it?:
"... I'm almost certain it was Eric that led my Grandad to Christ during Edinburgh. He became a minister later himself..."

You may enjoy this story:
I was upset with God's plan.
I had to leave Tokyo for the U.S. to go to college when Billy Graham was coming to Tokyo for a crusade. I knew my unsaved father would not go to the crusade if I was not in Tokyo to take him. I was quite troubled.
Later when I asked my father if he went to the crusade, he said "no".
God had a better plan. Due to the nature of my father's job, he personally gave Billy Graham a tour of the American Embassy in Tokyo!
Love this post it made me cry, that Harold told up for what he believed in. Truly remarkable, will definitely have to watch the movie. Thanks for posting
Liddell and the actor who played him both went to Edinburgh University. Small world
My dad took me to see this when I was 5 and I fell asleep in the cinema. Just watched it for first time and was great.
My favorite movie.
Literally brings tears to my eyes. Oh, the world does not deserve such a man. But the world needs so badly such men of conviction, and commitment to Christ. Isaiah 58:13-14
Aye, John,
And I think, “Oh, where are you now when we need you.”
I loved Nigel Havers and have an autographed photo from him!!
21:26 Sir Ian Holm got Sam Mussabini to a T.
I really enjoyed this video greatly, thank you for it.
BRAVO! BRAVO! Thank you for sharing this video!!
The actual movie made such an impact on me that I played the Chariots of Fire theme song as the Recessional at my Wedding!
God Bless Eric Liddell and Harold Abrams
Remains one of my top favorite movies. The movie is so quintessentially British in expression...how we Brits show our emotions - private joy and celebration...boredom of the laides who put up with the exercise of the men in thier lives...stoic...little by way of screaming and losing control ( lol) commitment and belief. Van Gelis superb score.
I rewatch this movie repeatedly. I still get chills when I watch it and hear the music.
I love all of the music from this movie they are all so beautiful music. I play the music from this by ear on the piano
Well done, great documentation my late dad was in the British rifles army from Kenya was well educated and dedicated his career to sports management, he was deeply religious and my love for hymns stems from his faith in God.
Wonderful presentation, in our era where everything is engulfed by scandal and advertising to be reminded of a time where things were more dedicated for the sake of the sport and for personal beliefs it becomes something that should be told today to encourage others who need to be given a purer form of encouragement.
This film reminds me what is indomitable human spirit . The pride of representing Country in and to major league. Remarkable film like Towering Inferno in early years. Gem and a masterpiece .
One of the greatest sports histories...
The "real story" behind Chariots of Fire should include the real reason why Cambridge was so uneasy when Abrahams in his desperation after he was thrashed by Eric Liddell in 1923 employed Sam Mussabini, a notorious coach infamous for his use of drugs in both cycling and athletics. In the film one sees Mussabini being "warned off" my the president of Scottish AAA (this actually happened) and the master of his college was clearly concerned that Abrahams would tarnish the reputation of the university.
Wonderful brilliant The Real Chariots Fire, studied the life of Eric Liddell, who example is an example to the nation, I had the privilege to speak to his sister on the telephone and still have a letter from her that I will always treasure. A true hero of faith
how amazing Michael!
Jenny Liddell and Jackson Scholz, one of Abrahams's American rivals, were still alive in the early 1980s and advised the producrs.

Great to learn what they did after the olympics
Thank you for this great documentary, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams where the true athletes.
Thank you Eric.
Love Chariots of Fire! Great movie very powerful
The bronze medalist in this event was New Zealander Arthur Porritt (1900-1994). He was too modest to be named in the movie, but his son has recently (April 2024) revealed that after the movie became a smash hit, he regretted the decision. He was an all around achiever, as a Rhodes Scholar and as a surgeon to the Royal family. To this day, he is the only New Zealander to have won an Olympic medal in a sprint.
RIP Ian Holm, Ian Charleson, John Gielgud, and anyone else I can think of.
And Brad Davis.

One of my favorites! I have watched it many times and a few when I had the flu for inspiration!
Excellent documentary
Great stuff -- thanks for sharing!
I was captivated by this story and, as a Vangelis fan, the music. The mood, the classic English cheer (and of course the Scottish cheer too), the determinism, and the gentlemanly atmosphere that was abundant. Not bad for a devout gender egalitarian like me (long story!).
So what about this very gentlemanly British (as born that is!) Harold Maurice Abrahams? What was he all about? Where did he come from? Where was he educated?
What?! Bedford School?! Yes, though at different times of course, the same school as my stepdad that I looked up to, and still do! Brilliant!
Big Nigel always looks good!
The movie and this documentary story is a real inspiration!
This is a great documentary. Thank you for sharing with us USers!
Fun fact: Kelly Holmes, seen here, was the first British Olympian to take both middle distance golds- 800m and 1,500m- since Albert Hill in 1920. Hill was coached by Sam Mussabini.
He trained Harold Abrams.
Excellent film! Thanks!
