I got the Death Star playset for Christmas in 1978. Most of what I got that year was Star Wars, including the 12" Luke Skywalker that I still have. Many of my Star Wars items survived, but a few, including the Death Star, mysteriously disappeared in the mid 1980's. My theory is that they were donated by mistake one day when we were doing some spring cleaning. Fast forward to January of this year, and I managed to find another Death Star on Ebay, and bought it from the original owner, who obviously took very good care of it. I was also able to replace all the other Star Wars toys I had lost. It took over 30 years and cost $$$, but was worth it. I'm looking at them right now.
I was just going to say exactly the same thing. I got it for Christmas as well. I also had the large Luke, Han, Chewbacca, Bobafett and Darth Vader. I didn't get them all at the same time, probably birthday as well. That was probably my best Christmas as a kid. May the force be with you.
I still have the Star Wars Death Star, and I have it filled with Star Wars action figures. As for the large figures, I have them all (some with the original box), and all I'm missing is Boba Fett's missile and Han Solo's medal. And may the Force be with you as well. Seventiesfan/ Megofan
My cousin had this when we were kids... and later, when Empire came out, they didn't make a Bespin playset, so it became out "Cloud City" as well. There was no stop to our power of imagination.
Christmas 1978 was the high light of the year for this awesome playset for me and my younger brother ,the following hristmas year 1979 was just as exciting when they put out the Millennium Falcon
I loved playing with this playset, it did have some limitations, but I played the heck out of it. Still have it, just missing the cardboard walls, foam from trash compactor, some plastic I beams.
It's very clever of them to use soft foam as the trash, considering that the whole point of the compactor was to crush the figures. Having so much foam ensures that the figures would be undamaged.
I'm pretty sure I got this for Christmas in '78 or '79. The rope swing was quickly lost, the tabs broke on many of the posts and the cardboard tore. But I was still able to rig it together and play with it until the end of Star Wars! I loved it.
I had mine for years, but it had been played with so much that it was literally in pieces and in a trash bag that I kept for decades. I literally kept it around in a trash bag moving it with me. I finally threw it away. No easy goodbye. Great playset.
Great review man! I still remember how excited I was to get this as a 10 year old. I might’ve been different but I kept it in good condition with no breakage or intense wear until my early 20s when I parted with it. Money was scarce growing up so I placed high value on it and was never rough with it.
I had the Marx Navarone Mountain Army set and loved it! Too bad the Death Star was not made like it. It was hard plastic and took years of playing. It too had big guns, an elevator and several accessories to fill the many floors.
Even for American kids this was rare. An older neighbor of mine had one, but by the time he showed me it was a few years after Jedi was released and our interest in SW toys had waned.
Had my Death Star playset all throughout my childhood. Battered and and broken, it never made the transition into my adult life. Have not yet purchased one for my collection yet. Thanks for sharing.
As a fellow Brit Tony I feel we totally missed out! Play set’s of any of the Star Wars themes were quite hard to get hold of in the small town I grew up in due to cost and availability, but I’ve made up for it now! Keep up the great work! And you have also inspired me to begin collecting the action force and action man toys I had as a child in the seventies! All the best Tony from the Uk!
Seemed like we had at least two Deathstar Spacestation playsets in our household. One of my brothers got one complete. Then another brother got a used one that was missing pieces(I think just a paper wall thing that slipped into the plastic and the foam trash pieces to the trash compactor).
I had this one...the cardboard was a big ragged from use, the hook for the plastic rope was broken when I got it, a number of the supports had the tabs break off and the exploding gun effect was damaged after my Death Star fell off a table during an earthquake. But still a good toy.
best toy ever. but, you're right, it was cheaply made. beyond that, if i had any nits it would be that the cardboard didn't have a picture of the death star dish array on the outside, but, meh, hardly a big deal. i would love to see a truly customized and decked out version of this bad boy with lights and sounds.
ryan barker would be nice to see a new gigantic 4ft tall 4ft wide 2ft deep. The Death Star sits on the floor, is a half circle, looks like the Death Star, opens up and reveals 7 floors with lights and sound and working elevators! Made extremely durable! For the durability, size and lifelike, I would pay $300-$400 easily, and so would a lot of other people!
When Return of the Jedi came out I don’t know why they didn’t bring back the Death Star playset. They could have made some changes like, made the top level into the Emperor’s throne room. And made Incompleted panels on the side.
Hello. I’m looking to make some replacement windows for the trash compactor. From the pics I’ve seen online I can see that they have flanges along the long ends. If you’d be able to provide any details, I’d appreciate it. The overall length and width of each one would be great. Thank you.
Great condition. I still have my original (I have some of my vintage stuff on my chanel). I like the vid thumbnail and the way you put this together. that is funny bout no cell block I just threw her in the cool trash compactor lol I do like the cardboard insets though. classic kenner packaging graphics. the spring in my laser canon doesn't lock anymore just old. fun how you used the proof of purchase seals for the ratings MTFBWY
I have this playset. Not in good shape. I played with it hard. If I would've known 40 years later I would still want to play with it, I would've took better care of it. I still have all my vintage star wars toys. Most are in pretty good shape. Except the Falcon, X-wing, my first land speeder.
I think it was difficult to quit playing with it for kids in 1978 probably parents are like it’s time for bed and the kid says he wants to keep playing

A week after I got mine, my dad took it apart and glued it together. It lasted for years.

The Death Stab looks awesome!

Incredibly I'd never seen it till now. Was only aware of the Pali toy version. Got to say it looks great and I'd loved to have had one as a kid.

I think it deserves a solid 4 out of 5 myself.

This was a neat set when it came out, but I much prefer the micro collection version.
