YouTube Click Through Rate Explained

- This video explains UA-cam click through rate, which is also known as CTR, and how to interpret what you're seeing. UA-cam click through rate can be confusing, especially when you see views rising and your CTR going down. This video should help demystify it. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments.

I have a question how much is your cpm? Like for your kind of channel is it higher than average?
👍🏻
My click-through rate is 0.4% and I spent 2 hours on the Thumbnail!🤣
I think the content matters. For me I realised that background music/sound affects click through rate.
@@michaelnjio I've now learnt a lot in the last 5 months, and that thumbnail that took me 2 hours looks terrible now. But what you say is correct about the content matters.
Seems like you were overthinking. Hope things are going better!
Only 2 hours 🥹
@@CaptainBudak Now I spend up to 10 hours on thumbnails, but yes that thumbnail I was referring to I spent 2 hours on.😅
Nick is definitely a UA-cam legend ! I started watching him about a month or so ago, I had ZERO subscribers. This channel has been my go-to channel since day one. So, if UA-cam is your thing, Nick is your guy! Peace !! ✌️BODO
🤓👊
Thanks I just started !
I love the new ways UA-cam has been helping everyone. I kept going every day and I got more to share ✨
This was so clear and helpful. Thanks so much! As a new channel/creator it’s really hard to make sense of what’s “good”, “bad”, and “normal” at this stage in the game.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Nick, thank you so much for responding to my question! It does make a lot more sense now - I didn't consider all the different factors that come into play when it gets to CTR. To all other small channels out there - you can do it! 😊
Thank you for this video, I just started a channel this week & had a .4 ctr & was stressing a little. This video reassured me it’s common for new channels to have a low ctr!🙌
WOW! Video quality and lighting is god tier in this one.
🤓👊
Big brother Nick rocks. I'm excited this video has finally been made. It's exactly what I needed. 😀
🤓👊
This definitely opened my eyes a bit more about the CTR and impressions.
Thanks nick. This is one of the exact questions I have about youtube. Answered perfectly!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! I changed my thumbnail and it helped tremendously!
Great video Nick, really helpful and delivered very clearly!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
JUST STARTED MY CHANNEL: the first 500 subs achieve 🙌. Your video on learning to use the comments section took me from April this way from 200 to 500 subs.
Nice! 🤓👊
Wow talk about a "aha!" moment 💡. Nick this is some game changing and time energy saving CTR advice you shared here. The fact that UA-cam is giving us the assist makes it even better. Now I now why my recent TMNT Shredder's Revenge video CTR is doing better than the Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay video haha 😄 The competition is wayy higher for that game than the retro content I do. So thanks to your video; I know what to focus on more. Keep up the great work, and have an awesome day man 🌟
Boom! 💥
Thank You Nick, your videos are always informative. 👍
🤓👊
What an amazing video! I was completely captivated from start to finish. Your creativity and dedication really shine through in your content. Keep up this fantastic work; I look forward to more videos! 🌟😊
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤓 ✋
Great information Nick! Yes I am REWATCHING to compare my numbers!
Thank you for the explanation. I was so confused how my video could have 60% views vs 40% swiped away yet only 6% CTR
Very informative, this answers alot of questions. Thank you 👍
My CTR is 30% but it’s only been live 36 hours😅 I’m here to learn.
I said this in the group earlier this week, but I don't really look at the numerical value of the CTR while monitoring early video performance. I just see way too much variance in that number. What I look for is how it's changing as impressions come in. That helps me figure out if I need to change titles or thumbnails.
CTR numbers without impression numbers doesn't mean much, so that makes sense.
@@NickNimmin people forget algorithms are math, not digital overlords that only pick videos to show people. I'm sure to get to that, it's crunching some first and second derivatives to find the same types of trends. So might as well apply all this stupid, hard math I've learned to this! Haha
Man I wish I understood at least half the stuff you explained. My problem is I’m so clueless that even though I know you’re explaining it step by step I still feel so lost and didn’t understand half or more of what all that explanation meant. 😢 I feel so dumb. I don’t even know how my UA-cam is still growing, ever so slowly but it is. Imagine if I really understood it all. It could be growing so much better and faster.
Don't feel dumb. There is a lot to learn and different ways to educate yourself. People have different learning styles they respond to. A more visual approach may work better for you.
@@NickNimmin thanks Nick, I think you’re right. I have bad ADHD and when things are explained mainly in words or if I have to read instructions or anything I have a hard time comprehending. But I love watching your videos and really appreciate all the help and useful info you give us so often. Just love your vibe. 😊
@@ADHDWellnessZone thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
I went from 0 to 5000 subs watching Nick's videos!
Boom! 💥
6,6k impressions and 1,7ctr. Maybe this aint my thing. Thanks for the content!
On my way to monetazion. My metrics are cool, but I have a lot external traffic and that makes me nervous
Thanks Nick! CTR has always had me scratching my head and still find these videos valuable even after following you for years through several different channels.
But I do have a question: I seem to be pulling in views, engagement and watch time but for some reason it rarely converts into subscribers. Is there's a reason for this? Is it common?
Audience behaviour is shifting to more people subscribing less because UA-cam does a good job at putting your content in front of people who regularly watch your content. This is where making sure to include a subscribe call-to-action can help lift the subscriber rate. A simple reminder to do so does wonders.
I saw some youtubers talk about how to create an adsense account. there's the normal way: after reaching the monetization requirements in your channel, you can create an adsense account. but the 2nd method they teach is create an admob account then create adsense account using the same gmail. after your admob account is accepted, your adsense is accepted too automatically. is this legit ?
The downside is that if your AdSense stays inactive too long, they can shut it down, causing delays when you happen to reach the threshold for monetization. There isn't any point in creating it early if you're not using it for something.
Hi Nick, thank you for the detailed information. I don’t have an issue with CTR, but with the actual impressions shown by YT. I started my channel back in January this year and have been doing well and growing steadily. The impressions were around 10,000 a day, but 2 weeks ago almost over night everything dropped and the impressions now are 500 so I went from some 500-700 views a day to 30! Never happened before and I have no explanation. My niche is cooking (nothing seasonal) and it seemed my videos were getting a lot of interest until everything just dropped. Thank you for any feedback! I’m puzzled 🤔
Don’t feel bad. We have studied dozens of small channels, and this happens literally all the time. I would recommend 1) sharing your videos on social media and 2) make cliff-hanging shorts that will easily entice shorts viewers to watch your long-form videos. Hope this helps! 😊
Thanks a lot for the guidance! Really appreciate it!
Thanks for this info as always 🙏🏿

Great information. Love your presentation!

Thank you for this information and educating us on this
My pleasure!
I have a question for another video, if you found it interesting enough. "Who gets your UA-cam revenue when you die?". I know it's a bit morbid, but I would like to make sure my daughter got mine after my death. If you don't set up someone as a beneficiary, what happens to it? I have no clue how to set this sort of thing up. Thanks!
That’s a great questions.
I’m going to make this video, thanks!
Thank you Nick
Hi nick. Thanks for your video. I hope can improve my ctr following your advise.
🤓👊
Hello great video information Nick
Hey, thanks!
So what ive learned from this video you should look at click through rate and impressions. Which meaning lets say i make a video about fish, UA-cam shows that to people they think would be interested, so the next video i would make about fish would/might get more views because UA-cam has now found out who watches it for my channel. You know what that makes alot of sense
I created a content matrix using my top thirty videos over 90 day increments ranked by subs and watch time.
Is there a video explaining why my views drop so fast when the video starts? I'm talking around 30sec into the video. I'm trying to beef up my content this summer to roll out more quality content. Thank you
Assuming you mean the audience retention. The intro to your video (particularly that first 30 seconds) is not "hooking" those that clicked through. Objectively look at the start of your video - I have a whole video about it here - ua-cam.com/video/IG8Xxn2UGJo/v-deo.html
@@NickNimmin I've said it before and I will say it again. Ur amazing thank you 🙂
I believe things are going well given that most of my videos now have a 9.7% engagement rate. The majority of the clicks come from UA-cam search or browse features, but I'm not sure about the difference between the two.
Search is when people are actively looking for a video on a topic. Browse is UA-cam showing your content on home pages and the subscription feed.
My CTRs are low, even the shorts which get some views but I am being patient.
I have a click rate of 3.7% and 1k impressions but why am I stuck at 48 views if the average view duration is 4:50? Thats pretty high for a 20 minute video.
Understood, thank you. Isn't all of this incumbent of how many peopleUA-cam decides to show one's content to? In other words, what does UA-cam calculate or qualify as an impression?
An impression is when they show your thumbnail on the screen anywhere on the platform for more than 1 second. The way UA-cam decides to show your content to more people is solely based on video performance. If people are interacting with your content at a level that’s competitive for the platform, you’ll get views. If they react at a high level you’ll get a lot of views. If people don’t respond well to what you’re doing yet, then you won’t get many views until the content gets to a competitive level.
No live today.. thanks again good info. 👍
Any time!
just seen this so I liked and watched
How do Google Ads videos play into this? For example, I make an ad to promote a video.. it gets tons of clicks, but the average watch time is terrible. In my opinion, not because it was bait, but more because it was just a good thumbnail but the viewer didn't really care about the content in the first place. Will running an ad and getting lots of views with low watch time hurt my channel overall? Was it better to just not promote it in the first place?
It will certainly affect the overall stats you see, but UA-cam state that the performance of views from Google Ads are kept separate from organic views when judging the performance of a video.
Using ads to promte your content is something I don't recommend though. I go into more detail in this podcast episode - commentsovercoffee.com/episode/should-you-grow-your-youtube-channel-with-ads/
Very helpful!
My record is 23% ctr. Total on channel 12.5%
Thank you for making this so easy to understand :)
Glad it was helpful!
About the, "Avoid trying to increase your CTR using thumbnails or titles that are clickbait part". I think that's where my problem is related but mine's not exactly clickbait or anything. You see I have this gadgets channel where I present and list down various new gadgets to people. When my channel was young a very specific, "self defense gadgets video" went very viral and accumulated around 20-25k of my subscribers. These 20-25 k subs are around older people of age 40 and above (which are only interested in self defense stuff and not other gadgets) now when I post other gadgets, the algorithm shows it to my vast subscribers - But my subscribers being only fans of Self Defense sees the video on their feed but didn't click or click off when they just started seeing the video (because they are not interested as it is not a self defense video). But as I have all these people as my subscribers I think I'm stuck with a bunch of people who UA-cam will show my content to but won't watch it. Making it lead to high impressions but no clickthrough. Oh and if you ask, why can't I make just self defense videos since all my subscribers are people who like self defense. I really dont want to post all self defense stuff. Plus, content like those are against the rules of YT as they involve many stuff like knife, guns and tasers. So, what should I do? I am so confused
@NickNimmin please provide a solution to get me back on track with my original niche
So as an advertiser what % should i aim for? Or realistic to expect?
This is for UA-cam, not Google ads.
SOOOO informative, thanks Nick! CTR has always baffled me. Until now!
Happy to help!

Don't necessarily know if this is truthful .... But I must say .... This is very entertaining 🤔
Why wouldn't it be truthful??
@@peachxtaehyung why would it be truthful
@@beatcookinncleveland because he is an expert in youtube plus he's showing info straight from youtube that's why?
Well, my plan is to explain things as truthfully/accurately as I can.
Everything doesn't work for everyone .... If I've tried yours and Robert Benjamin's advice on growing a UA-cam channel .... and it doesn't work. What do you expect me to say ? 🤔
Just watching this, My most recent video is just a short announcement that I will be off for the summer. the entire meat of the videos is done in 37 seconds and the entire video is just 69 seconds. with 20 seconds of that being end card. This video is doing double the views of any video that I have ever posted. (That is not a Short). CTR was at 19 ctr but has drifted into an average of 12 ctr. My average view duration is 37 seconds. that is 2 seconds less than the entire meat of the video. Just rolling text explaining why I'm off for the summer. The part I find odd is the YT placed a note on my video
"People are choosing to watch this video more often than other videos, but they aren't watching as long. Make sure your title and thumbnail represent your video's content so viewers no what to expect."
I find it funny to get this note from YT considering the video is only 69 seconds long the entire message ends at 39 seconds and the rest is a 20 second end card I tac onto every video. Thumbnails says what the video is an ANNONCMENT and tittle says I have new priority's.
I do have a good CTR on most vides of around 5 to 6.
The explainers are triggered by certain metrics, so they do not have the nuance to interpret special factors about a particular video.
I've started my camhannel so impression is so low o don't know how to improve this situation ㅠ
I changed my thumbnail after posting video twice already today. I guess last night I used a skinny font and I really couldn’t see it very well after I posted it this morning so I edited and then I edited it again to make font slightly bigger. Was trying something different with my words on the thumbnail and giving it a bright background. 3 times is the charm, right? 🤞
Good morning! Replay gang!❤❤❤
🤓👊
Awesome content as usual
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello there, thank you for another great video. My question is that one of my videos has 14% CTR and UA-cam stopped impressions to the same video, is it anything more what i can do to have it more shown to people or that is all what UA-cam will do for that video? Same video got 770 views in first 24 hours and died. Thank you and I hope you will have time to explain me what is going on.
Average watch time is 2 minutes and thumbnail is not click bait.
They will keep testing it. The nature of the topic of the video can be a factor - is it evergreen or only trending for a brief time? How much interest is there in the topic overall? Remember that 14% CTR is only relevant by knowing how many impressions that is from. Early on the CTR will be higher (because your usual viewers will more likely click right away) and drop as the video is opened to a wider audience. Testing other title and thumbnail combinations could help make it clearer to a more casual audience as to what your video is about.
@@NickNimmin Thank you Nick, it is not evergreen, after about 24h impressions stopped and numbers are not moving as much, but I will take whatever UA-cam gives to my channel. 2% was from subs and most of everything else was from Browser. Thank you again for your help.
P.s. few of my videos did a same, looks like as you said UA-cam testing my relative new channel and trying to find best niche for me, hopefully will continue to recommend my videos further. I will continue to implement your suggestions and help from channel review about month ago and hopefully will monitize in the near future.
Thank you!
amazing video, thanks this helped me a lot.
Glad it helped!
Nick, I’m feeling desperate tonight and thought I would just ask you. I get messaged every week from viewers wondering why I don’t have at least 10 times the subscribers I do. Over 400 VIDEOS/Episodes! Yet I seem to be stuck, and I can’t figure out what is holding me back!
I have useful content, catchy titles, good sound quality, a pleasant background. And I’m a good presenter with a sense of humor , if I do say so myself. Is it my thumbnails?! I just want somebody to tell me what I’m doing wrong! I’ve even worked on my keywords for Seo in my description box. ☹️
I would love if you could take a peek, but if you don’t have the time, could you at least do an episode mentioning the top five things that could be holding a Channel back if it’s none of the things I’ve mentioned about mine?
I’m never giving up!!! But I also feel like I’m wasting time doing something wrong.
Much appreciated!
Warmly, Carey
Hi Carey! I just watched the first minute of your dating profile video. Almost the entire minute is about you. You mention what a viewer might get out of your video then you talk about your clients, what you do, then you ask them to check out your website. A few issues with that is it feels like it’s taking forever (in internet time…lol) to get to the actual promise of the video, it feels almost like a commercial and for the people who leave UA-cam to visit your website you’re causing them to leave UA-cam at the beginning of your video. For the people who leave you’re hurting your retention and you’re stopping their session time (how long people stay on UA-cam.)
I recommend you look in your audience retention reports in your analytics to see how people are responding to those parts of your videos. You’ll learn a lot about the content you’re making by studying the retention on your videos.
I understand you’re using UA-cam to generate leads but the best thing you can do to generate leads at scale is to make the content 100% about them. You can still spread awareness about your service by adding it to a story. For example, once you get into the content you could say, “one of my clients was having this issue and what worked for them is….”. Doing that will spread awareness about your service without having to “sell” it.
I would start there for that part.
At a higher level, your titles need work and on your about me page you mention you’re helping people 40 and up. To help you better target the right people I would use that as part of your titles and overall branding. For example, “why we date” isn’t interesting. “Why we still date after 40” creates an instant connection with people over 40. Adding value to it like “Why YOU should still date over 40 and pitfalls to avoid” is now interesting to people over 40 and for people who are dating over 40 (your target viewer) your video is now something that could add value to them. Working out your title and thumb is something you should do before you make your video so you can workshop that first and then make the video to support it.
I need to answer more comments so I’ll stop there but if if you make those adjustments on your future videos it will help.
@@NickNimmin You have no idea how much I appreciate that. Or maybe you do. ;) Also grateful for the heads up. 🙏(I was gonna check back soon just in case.)
Great tips! Thank you!!!
I recently started inserting the hook right after my 5 second welcome, but you say it’s gotta dive into the content more quickly. GOT IT! ✅
I don’t usually mention my website 🤦🏻♀️but you’re 100% right, when I do it should come in the middle of the video and be more pertinent to what’s being discussed. ✅ No obvious commercials!
Rethink my title process. Will do! ✅
I started with a small niche of over 50 women. But it’s now a 40-60 male/female split (age 25 to 65+ pretty evenly) so my niche went out the window and I stopped mentioning age or gender to be inclusive. I tried to niche down but it didn’t stick. ***Should I embrace that growth or continue trying to niche down?***
Here’s my feedback for you! Lol.
I binged your content when I first started my channel and probably watched 100 episodes at once. So I know your evergreen content has you covered with all the folks starting out. Great job keeping it interesting years later!
💖👍
So, are impressions the amount of ppl the video has been shown, too? Why is my video not being shown to more ppl after like 3 days or so?
Actually, its the amount of times your title and thumbnail have ended up in front of a viewer on the UA-cam platform. The amount of impressions you get will depend on a.bunch of factors including how well UA-cam understands what your video is about (so they know who the potential right audience should be), how those initial impressions are responded to by that audience (did they click, did they watch a small part, or all the way through), and so on. They are continually accruing data to determine who is the best viewers are for your content and over time will get a better understanding as they keep testing the video in front of potential viewers.
I have a video of 5.2k impressions,1.7k click through rate but have 115 view, what could be the problem thanks
1.7 % at 5k impressions is very low. Also remember, the CTR is just one of the many factors UA-cam considers when it comes to measuring interest and satisfaction.
I always get above average view duration but low CTR what does that mean ?
At a basic level, once someone has clicked into your video, they are enjoying it and staying longer. If the CTR is relatively low then it could be a sign you need better packaging (thumbnail and title) to win more clicks.
Thanks Nick!! No stream today?
Not today, I have a friend in town.
Gotcha!

#TUBEBUDDY LETS GO NICK! Don't leave us hanging...
Hi sir!
Recently I upload videos that are about 1 minute in length, for example one of my videos got 292 views(91%from browser feature) and the impression stopped at 2k with 10%ctr and 80% avd,
Could you let me know the cause of stopping impression by yt?
Thnaks in advance
People they are showing it to stopped responding at a competitive level.
Is 4.9℅ any good ctr
no live stream today?
No, I have a friend in town.
My click through rate vs views is very weird. I have a video with 7375 views (it's one of my best ever, I'm not a big UA-camr). But when I check the Impressions click through rate, it says this video has *8* views!!! Impressions 20, and Impressions click through rate of 15%. That makes absolutely no sense. What does it mean, and what am I supposed to do with that information? (I've also noticed that UA-cam's view counter is generally effed. If I look at the views in three different places, the same video can have three different results. It's all on the same platform, it should show the same numbers.)
The view counts will vary, particularly just after a video is released, due to the validation process. Also keep in mind that different surfaces (pages or locations on UA-cam) get their data from different servers and it can take time for these results to be verified and synced.
I'm not sure what you're seeing for the CTR on that specific video. If the impressions and the views are a lot lower that the total views, it could be that you're only looking at a specific traffic source or that a LOT of your views came from off platform sources like sharing to social or embeds on other websites as CTR is not tracked from these locations.
@@NickNimmin They were mainly from the shorts feed. Uploaded like a month ago. :) I very recently started with those. But I feel the views count should have been synced by now. :/ I think UA-cam is broken.
Recent views (in the last 72 hours) could still be getting verified, so it just depends how many views the Short is currently getting. The view count that matters is what's showing in your Studio dashboard/analytics.
I posted my first video yesterday night. I have 25 views but zero Click through rate😭😭😭😭😭. I don't know what to do.
25 views on your first video is a win. Make your next video and keep going!
@@NickNimmin
Thank you very much 😊
Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Bro, you gotta put what you're saying into practice. You got nearly one million subs but in one hour you're not getting 1k views ? that's weird.
Another thing you’ll notice is that not all videos are made for recommendations. I’m going for long term search traffic for this one. You’ll also come to know that the initial performance of a video doesn’t dictate it’s long term performance and video performance isn’t just click through rate. It’s a combination of factors, CTR is just one of them. Editing to add that I will be updating the thumb though when I get back from vacation.
Its my bad luck
Its being 10 months and just 200 watch time
What could I do😢😢
my click-through rate is 12.5% so is that good?
The click through rate should be looked at on a per video basis. A channel-wide click through rate doesn't provide a lot of context. Over time, the click through rate of any video will change.
So if i stream call of duty for like 7 hours and only get an average watch time of 10%, does that hurt me for future videos since it kills my overall average watch time?
No. How that live stream performs is going to affect how it continues to get surfaced to viewers going forward, not your other content. Average view duration is only one of many metrics. Never judge a pass or fail based on a single metric.
@@NickNimmin I appreciate your response and this video. It helped make the algorithm make sense. Being a new channel, I'm glad I know this early on🙏
Haven’t seen higher than 2% in ages 😢
Gosh, I feel like whatever I do is not working for me :(
Keep going. This stuff is hard but it’s just a learning curve you have to go through.
So basically - just make good content and all will be good :)
Great video thank you.
why does nothing show up in my traffic sources for my video? it just says 0
It depends - how new is the video and how many views has it accrued so far? If you look to early on, the data has not been fully locked in.
@@NickNimmin ur right the video was too new, thank you. Also do u know why my comments keep getting disabled on my recent video ? Im 22 years old is it because they think i look under 18?
Make sure you're not marking your content as "made for kids". Even being under 18, comments should still work - under 13 or specific content for kids may be marked as "for kids" by UA-cam and get comments turned off. Also, make sure the video isn't marked as Private.
@@NickNimmin im not, i wasnt marking it as for kids, there are no kids in my video and i am also not a kid i done some research it seems like sometimes youtube does it if they think the creator looks under 18 which is just ridiculous
It is possible that the machine learning AI is misjudging your age. I would add a disclaimer to your channel description stating your age, and also add the same disclaimer to each video description that you appear in.
Shorts really killed my long form videos views :d
No. Publishing 4 long form videos in 11 months killed your long form views.
@@NickNimmin i get it Nick, I'll try to make long form more often from now on..
My CTR IS 9 OR 10 ..But views is just 12 or 25
When you have low impressions, CTR can be high, because more of them are your regular viewers. A better topic/title/thumbnail combination could win more clicks and impressions.
Thank u sir for your time to reply me
I have 80% is that good
Outstanding. As long as it’s with more than a handful of impressions.
❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊
I have on average people watching 2:30
My video with the fastest growth has a click through rate of 9.6% whereas my video with the most views has 5.9% weird...
The wider the reach if a video - more impressions and views - the lower the CTR will be. As UA-cam shows a video to a broader audience, you going to get less clicks per 1000 impressions.
color grading of your video is great - but it looks like you have pink lip stick ;)
That Magic Bullet LUT!!
@@NickNimmin hmmm - I guess you could add a little hue adjustment then. Change the pink toward orange and it should be good.
Not too much - just a bit ;)
I'm using Resolve here. Lookes like the quality of your setup worth this free awesome program.
Keep up the great work.
I came back to watch this video again few month after seeing some of the problems mentioned in your video.
@@NickNimmin The quality is great - I would not comment if it was not already very good.
