  • Expedia's 2024 annual vacation deprivation report finds Americans are skipping vacations, with U.S. workers given the least amount of time off on average compared to the 10 other countries surveyed. Melanie Fish, head of global public relations for Expedia, joins CBS News to discuss the steps we can take to fix it.

If you even get leave time... we live in the 19th Century as far as worker rights are concerned. Sure they can't work 12 year olds in coal mines anymore, or make us dig asbestos without so much as a bandanna over our face, but not much else...

Pathetic. Every other country is actually improving the lives of their citizens except for the US.

I think what this report fails to address is that paid leave is not mandated in law in the US. Most European countries mandate paid leave BY LAW. It's not up to the employer, every citizen is required by law to have to have 4+ weeks off a year.

Almost the entire world, actually. Out of nearly 200 countries, only North Korea, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the UAE, Sri Lanka, Liberia, and the United States of America DON'T mandate a minimum paid vacation.

Hard to enjoy time off if it means loss of pay, your job, or use of sick days you need to keep a job. In many cases its just denied due to "lack of coverage" like the staffing is an employees personal issue to take care of

Yeah, what this story fails to mention is that every other country on that list guarantees its citizens a LEGAL MINIMUM PAID VACATION TIME which employees are entitled to take, and which employers must legally provide. With nearly 200 countries in the world, there are only a handful of countries that don't provide citizens with guaranteed paid vacation, and those countries are: North Korea, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the UAE, Sri Lanka, Liberia, and the United States of America. All others provide guaranteed paid vacation, ranging from a week to a month--to be taken per year. Some countries force their employees to take it every year, while others will allow employees to bank their unused vacation and roll it over to the next year so that they can take two weeks off, etc. Of course, this is just the legal minimum. Employees will sometimes earn the privilege to take two weeks or more per year if their company allows for it, or if they were able to negotiate it. Anything beyond the legal requirement is at the discretion of the employer. Point being: this study is flawed at best.

Friend just gave a three month heads up only to be denied anyways with no other requests listed for that period. Meanwhile their boss has had 2 full vactions in the past 2 months. Another issue is pay for alot of people, when you work a job that pays little and has no PTO or PTO is tied to your incredibly limited sick days can you justify the time off? We have such a toxic work culture in America thats just soul crushing. I blame boomers for it who feel the only value in their life is their work.

It's true, certain jobs give very few annual leave every year. 100 hours of annual leave is just not enough because if you have to take absence from work due emergency or appointment, car broke down it affects your annual leave depending on the case. And if you get in an accident it also affects your annual leave because sick leave is just not enough. In the end you are working more to build up annual leave which just isn't enough.

It's easier for Europeans living in Europe to go on vacation. They can travel to different countries without having to fly long hours. America, on the other hand, is a bit unlucky in this regard.
Their lucky point, however, is that currently the American dollar is extremely valuable in other countries.

Americans get the fewest vacation days "worldwide"
...out of 11 countries. Come on, we should get more vacation time (yes, in most other countries it's actually mandated by law), but let's not lie, exaggerate, or click-bait in service of this cause.
