Many people comment on the flaws of his singing or the power of his voice but they fail to see the magic of his artistry. Christoff was the consumate artist of opera.
Not only is his deeply penetrating and immense voice mesmerizing, but his fabulous singing and facial expressions makes you think you are literally seeing the devil in front of you, even without makeup and costumes.

Yes, I was still very young then,maybe that explains something, but still, it remains a treasured memory. Whenever I hear the intro to "ella jamai m'amo" I get transported back to that theater and that scene, with this man I feared yet felt sorry for. And yes, I could hear every note he sang, his voice carried beautifully.

To hear him on stage, oh lordy that was a HUGE voice...and the definitive satanic Mephistopheles. If only the greatest bass had sung with the greatest tenor, Björling. Well, I found a recording of Aida with the two in a duet of sorts. Opera heaven!

I dunno about the whole "A is better than B" thing. Having started out in college singing bass parts (this was my all-time favorite aria), and quitting singing out of disgust at my voice "finding itself" as a high baritone, I can understand some of what is required to do this aria correctly. Even in a suit, alone on a stage, Christoff is VERY convincing. I mean, honetstly, look at his EYEBROWS... :) Anelia, thank you for posting this EXCELLENT video! :)
Let me tell you something, sunshine. I heard him live. This was no small voice, brother. The mics can't capture it, but it was HUGE! It swells. Hi voice is not loud - it is dense, strong and hits you in the chest. There is no other singer with such TITANIC voice. As I said -not loud - POWERFUL!
I would say Slavonic accent not Russian, after all he's Bulgarian but for the rest you're perfectly right, his ability to deliver the words singing are phenomenal: the whole message is out there.

Fabulous singing of a very difficult aria which lies awfully high for a bass. His characterization is marvelous. His Mephistopheles is utterly satanic; you feel as if you are in the presence of Satan himself. And Christoff's French is much better than it is given credit for, actually quite admirable.

I'm just learning about opera, appreciating the art that it is. Though not very knowledgeable with the intricacies and techniques involved, I do enjoy Christoff's interpretation of this aria. I look and listen to him and can easily see Mephistopheles. And by the way, his french diction is very good too. You can understand what he is singing, very easily.
