I heard him sing this role at Covent Garden in the 1978-79 season, so it is a treat to hear this on UA-cam. I will never forget the voice and the sheer impact of his stage presence.
What I appreciate about this ... he sings the first part looking like he is half-asleep, half in a nightmare ... and then comes fully awake to realize that the nightmare is real and he has been up all night... details... exhausted and heartbroken and in despair ... but with flashes of energy that tell us he is still a mighty man and will put up a fight until he reaches the Escurial! Masterfully done!
Borish Christoff's performances always give me goosebumps. the emotional intensity is such that I cannot even listen to the recordings sometimes. He is a true magician. . the Merlin of opera
Saluti.
No words can express the emotions this artist always awakens in me ~ his voice and interpretation skills were unique. ~ Thank you so much, dear @Kievest, for sending me this and @amlirico for sharing this magnificent footage with us , and above all, THANKS to Boris Christoff for the many moments of joy and excitement he brought to our lives.
E meraviglioso ! One of the two great bassos named Boris. Christoff and the lesser known but equally superb Boris Shtokolov. Mille grazie amlirico for sharing this rare piece of opera video with us. Deeply moving singing by a wonderful artist !
Of course other bassos try to laugh at him. Because their personalities can never match his. Compare this magnificent singing with his later performance when he was 68 years old. Despite that he naturally has gotten his flaws by then, he is still one of opera historys marvels.
He is a great reminder that opera is about music AND theater. If one of the two is missing it is not whole. There are plenty of great voices. Not enough great actors and singers. That is why Christoff is among the greatest.
There are never many great voices, and today there are few. Christoff was not a great actor compared to the greats. Great basses like Tozzi, Siepi and Hines considered him almost a joke.
OscarLevant1 OscarLevant1, you do not have to be offensive to prove your point. A great artist is also a humble one. So, no artist that qualifies his colleague as "joke" could be great.
Someone mentioned 'generic' basses: great rumbling, woofy tone with wobbly vibratos. Then there are masters like Christoff, Gobbi, Pinza, Natzke, Dawson, Chaliapin who can produce any dynamic or tone of voice that the music demands. Brava to this incredible maestro!
Incredible voice, incredible Boris Hristov! Voce incredibile, incredibile Boris Hristov! Unglaubliche Stimme, unglaublicher Boris Hristov!
the greatest of the greats. a stage direction of rare intelligence. no rosary beads, games with the candles, over-acting. Pure introspection, interpreted musically with lightness of thought - or was lightness the reality in numbness of hurt, resignation?... Philips first 'Amore per me, non ha ...', so tender, tenderness of a simple human being, a King perhaps, but stung by love's delusion. Great ... Verdi's sentiments are done justice.
Quels autres?
Such a "soave" attack in every note he sings!!!wow, he is amazing, specially for a so robust and big bass voice. He sounds more ellegant than most of the singers I heard.Bravo!!!, really a "lyrical jewel" with Boris Christoff (I meet some time a go a Johann Christop, that said his real name was "Christoff"; he was a great baritone, sadly passed away). Thanks again and Bravo!!!
Christoff sang Mephistopheles in the first stereo recording of Faust, which I bought 61 years ago. I was blown away by his voice and his vocal acting. His voice reminded me of the great Boris Chaliapin. I began comparing recordings. IMHO, in vocalism alone, I would give first place to Christoff. I never saw him in person but I have seen his interpretations of roles on video and he is nothing short of magnificent. I have sung this aria in concert with a number of symphony orchestras. I don't think that I could hold a candle to this interpretation.
I meen Boris Christoff has not got the credit he deserves for his Artisic life. For me the greatest actor among the singers…same as Callas and Domingo…

Very interesting way to look at this performance!
One of the great voices of the 20th Century. The dark color and sheer masculinity are captivating.
What a legendary performance of both singing and acting.
Bravissimo. Heard him singing this aria in a venyl 50 years ago, and still impress me.
Simply magnificent! A performance for the ages.

Thrilling, iconic, never to be forgotten!
Breathtaking performance! The best Philip I ever heard!
Yes! He's the best Philip I but the best Philip II is Cesare Siepi.

Of course other bassos try to laugh at him. Because their personalities can never match his. Compare this magnificent singing with his later performance when he was 68 years old. Despite that he naturally has gotten his flaws by then, he is still one of opera historys marvels.

Intersting notion. Do you have a quote of Tozzi or Siepi on Christoff?
OscarLevant1
OscarLevant1, you do not have to be offensive to prove your point. A great artist is also a humble one. So, no artist that qualifies his colleague as "joke" could be great.
Thank you, Krum Arnaudov! Couldn't put it better. NO DOUBT Christoff is one of the greatest, and THE GREATEST for many.
Not all artists are humble. In fact most are not, but I apologize if I have offended any fans of Christoff.
Sorry, but Gobbi wasn't a bass.

@Stevie dit le wonder I think the best in this aria is Cesare Siepi. Regards.

If I ever had to chose between Nicolai Ghiaurov and Boris Christoff as my favorite bass voice, I would need a full crises team thereafter.
Immenso.
Impeccable.
BORIS CHRISTOV ???!!! GREAT, GREAT, GREAT BULGARIAN VOICE !!! PRIDE FOR BULGARIA !!! PRIDE FOR THE World CULTURE !!!
