Agreed. I usually look up the companies to see if they've had lawsuits or complaints against them. Most of the companies which interrupt UA-cam videos have turned out to have either lawsuits or multiple complaints against them. Surprise, surprise....
If ever there was a match for a person and a role, this is it. This voice, his imposing size, and his command of all that he does is simply astounding, especially in person!
Ferruccio Furlanetto's performance from 2001 would come close if his outfit and makeup would've have been better. But René Pape still stands on number 1 !
This was a new production at the Met in 2011; I thought it was unique and great to watch. I was able to see it in both the fall and the spring, with two different casts. In the fall, Pape sang this with Jonas Kaufmann as his Faust. Then in the spring, we had Joseph Calleja sing Faust with Furlanetto as Mephistopheles. We even had a night of Alagna in the spring when Calleja came down with labyrinthitis. Each singer brought something unique to their role; this dancing that Pape did at the end of Le veau d'or was not done by Furlanetto. I was thoroughly impressed by the size of Furlanetto's voice, it was larger than I thought it would be. Calleja gave us a magnificent diminuendo on the high C each night in Salut, demeure, just like the great Distefano.
@@LocutusBorgOf yep! he works with rammstein sometimes; it isn't really my genre but wiki tells me there's a song cycle called mein herz brennt and a piano version of mann gegen mann
I don't quite understand why the English caption stays the same after a long sung line. Aren't there more words in the line than is indicated by the translation?
To advertisers: if you interrupt a video while I am watching it I will NEVER consider using your product or service, no matter how good it may be.

And for one of opera's greatest villain songs, too.

Now i can not get out of my head the singing and the dancing, i love it! excellent performance! thanks for the upload!
How great is Rene Pape in this role... I come back at least once a month to rewatch this video. ❤
I am working on this aria for my senior recital, I LOVE this depiction and scene! It's a killer piece of rep to have!
Mephistopheles certainly has the sheer charisma of his fellow devil Saruman.
Literally the best possible version.
Ghiaurov is much better
This is the BEST PERFORMANCE I've seen of this aria!
It seems like the people behind Mephistopheles were possessed by the story and the song... really genius

And Poplavskaya as Marguerite was unforgettable. A totally committed artist. She was Marguerite throughout the run.
J'adore René Pape et ne lui connaissais pas une diction aussi parfaite en français ! Bravo !
I like the dance moves
Beautiful
I fell off my chair during that last dance.
This was metal before there was metal.
Who needs Metal? I got me my daily dose of Gounod
Exactly, I am depressed by the lack of metal covers on the internet.

Gold standard. Love Ghiaurov's version, but this one is the most perfect both vocally and dramatically.
"Gold standard." Pun intended?

Who else likes listening to this while trying to decide what’s for dinner based on the business cards they’ve acquired from their victims?
glad to see you here Dr. Lecter
Mephistopheles my beloved muse ❤
It's regrettable that Wagner's song of the rat was Interrupted, but Gounod and his librettists had to get on with the plot.
Heart-stopping
Bravo!!!
the best Mefisto-Rene Pappe
i agree!
Bravooooo Rene!!!
BRAVÓ!!!! Jó a jelmez is! A "GONOSZ" legtöbbször öltönyös-nyakkendős úriembetnek adja el magát..
Wunderbar!
This was in the hello neighbour teaser from 2015
I wonder, was Mephistopheles' suit based off of his colleague Pip's in the Twilight Zone episode A Nice Place to Visit?

He looks like a BioShock villain.
What is this from can I watch it from anywhere?
It's the Met's 2011 version. You can probably catch it on Met on Demand
