I simply cannot believe neither my eyes, nor my ears. I've been watching this video I don't know how many times and I still marvel that such a treasure is right here on UA-cam and is so wonderfully easy to be reached.
Moreover, it seems this was not a lip sync but a live performance. It is distinctly different than the only studio recording of that song Boris ever made (Dobrowen, 1950), but it is even more powerful and more beautiful.
God bless you, Gabba02, for having shared this video!

Wonderful iconic, timeless Russian song sung by this Bulgarian bass singer! You can really feel the incredible effort of the workers in the shipyard hawling, lifting, using all their combined perspiring team strength and spirit in their shared work to keep industry flowing. Bravo! Boris Christoff.

Man, just look at his posturing. It's not just the throat and lungs that make a great voice, he's taking intense pains to keep his body bent in just the right shapes to produce the best and most resonant tones he can.

The “noble posture,” as it’s called in the singing field, is all about opening the ribs for maximum lung expansion, maximum breath support, and maximum freedom of the throat, tongue, and jaw.

Say what you will about people coming here because of the Heavy from TF2, if it weren't for that, there'd be some ignorant of this ballad. And being ignorant of it would undermind this man's bellowing vocals and the strain of the Volga Boatman. There's a lot of grief behind it, but it's meant to keep from losing morale. To keep pushing no matter the strain. Doesn't matter what brought you here, so long as it's appreciated

From where the *BLEEP* did you got the idea that he's russian or even JEWISH?? He was bulgarian and despite the fact that during the communism in Bulgaria, they almost exiled him and he made his carrer in Italy, he was always proud of his heritage. There's google and there's wikipedia for such things as informing yourself - do not write such comments, because
you are confusing people, who are not familiar with Christoff.

I'm Bulgarian and I speak and understand Russian quite well - I can assure you that his russian is perfect (unlike most Bulgarians). His Russian is close to the old slavorthodox interpretation - for example he does pronounse the 'ь' and thr 'ъ' at the end of the words - like the old russian and bulgarian writing --- "Ей ухнемъ". Some priests in the orthodox churches still speak and sing that way.
Something else; his speaks (sings) Italian, French or German with a Russian accent

Wonderful, and he was really living the part! Nevertheless I slightly prefer the voice of Leonid K? with the Red Army Choir, even though he doesn't get so carried away. How many people have seen the painting that inspired the song? I always imagined that boatmen must be hauling away in boats, and there was something romantic about it even though it was very hard work. Not so! I always thought that before the days of mechanisation, people who had to haul huge loads on land would have draught horses - there's hard enough work for a whole team of horses! - or maybe some oxen. This painting shows the poverty and desperation of the 19th century Russian peasant.

When you listen the Song of the Volga Boatmen you should not forget that this is a sad song, this is the song of people overwhelmed by the plight to withdraw boats against river current. The song is sung by burlaks, or barge-haulers, on the Volga River. Lives of slaves, in which no drop of the Red Army optimism. No glory, only pain and greif. Russian soul is broken. That's the difference. Please see Repin's painting Barge Haulers on the Volga.

By the way, I was the nerd who helped The Who during their opera Tommy, in octophonic: 8 channels, intermingling musical instrument and human voices. You might learn something about Music. Music is music. It is erroneous to call some Classical and some Modern. I hate this classification set up by upper and lower echelons. Have a nice day and good luck. I shall most certainly listen to your recommendations.

There are great modern musicians: Michael Jackson: Composer, Lyricist, Singer, Performer and a great entertainer ... a genius .. born once in a century. So hold your horses and learn. I am much much older and yes, I am still learning, learning from idiots like you who consider themselves to be expert at a tender age. Music is a vast ocean, larger than all the oceans and seas put together. Human vocal chords are even more. Each strand of the VC produces a distinct and different vibration.

Thnx for the comments. I hope it is a typographical error: Arrogant Prig not Prick. Arrogance, my friend, has nothing to do with appreciation of good music. You are most welcome to your opinion. I respect that. There are old idiots and young brilliants. Music is not the property of rich and famous or old or young. It is for all. If you really want to know about Music, go to India, spend years in an Aashram in the south and learn. India gave music to the world among other things.
