I had a mechanic from El Salvador who maintained my 1988 LWB Exceed (sold it Jan 2020 after 15 yrs ownership) He had it up on the lift and would be working it - another customer would come in and say "Hey Fernando, what is the " he would yell back in an aggressive voice "Pajero" they would yell back "tu Madre" Currently have a Prado (97) and, missing the Pajero, I have a 2000 Galloper II SWB on the way from Korea I bought in April.
This thing is loaded to the gills with everything that makes cars from the era cool. I feel like America really missed out on butch 2 door SUVs, closest we got was the Wrangler and the later Amigos. Now I want one!
On the positive side there is a 2 door Bronco coming soon and the new 2 door Defender. Those market additions might even encourage Toyota to bring their 2 door Prado on the same ships that already carry 4Runners and GXs from the same factory.
I have so much respect for a gen 2 Pajero no matter what the trim or engine choice. I've owned two 92' models now with the 3.0 V6, both identical except one was manual, and one was auto. Both were amazing and I miss them both very much, although the auto was terribly slow, even for a 4x4 but still loved it (Australian Spec)
Well, Sport behaviour is not something you are looking on a SWB Montero or Pajero, rather reliability and off-road capability, something that these vehicles definitely have...
@globalcitizen8321 the auto had issues, when I say slow, I mean 0 - 100 in about 30 seconds or more.. Apart from that ome, to say they're reliable is an understatement...
My dad had 2 Pajeros and now an L200 all automatics from different eras and the transmission is still god awful slow and sluggish. Other than that great cars, shame they don't make any of them anymore
The throttle knob is to allow you to warm up the engine whilst not being in the vehicle. It raises the engine revs and the idea behind this that on start up the oil needs to get around the oil galleries asap . You should always warm a diesel up ( any engine really ) before driving . If your engine has a turbo you ought to let it idle at the end of the journey for 1 minute. When working hard the turbo can spin at uo to 250k rpm ! If you turn it off and the turbo is still at high rpm it can accelerate wear due to the oil pump no longer pumping oil to the turbo bearings . If you treat these diesel engines carefully they can last 300k - 500k miles . Diesels are a work horse not for performance .
Wow this is in mint condition. I remember in Australia in the 90s the LWB version was everywhere and the high end trim version was a status symbol too.
My favorite 4 x 4 by far in Brazil. There due to the high fuel cost the Diesel engine is a must. The independent multilink suspension in the back and the A/B in the front used by the homolugation Pajero Evolution at it's Dakar overall win is for the period and price very comfortable off road. Cheers!
That's two Mitsubishis reviewed within weeks of each other. Thank you for the memories of these two awesome yet forgotten cars from the golden age of Japanese cars.
I agree that the Pajero is surprisingly cool. However, seeing how Japanese stuff is really not my thing, what is this "golden age" and what makes it so?
Mitsubishi used to make a lot of great vehicles especially ahead of its time but then out of nowhere Mitsubishi became Peugeot and start making awful cars and terrible sales decisions
It's a shame they pulled their flagship Montero Pajero from the US market and sold rather meh vehicles My wife bought an outlander I think the second generation for a brief period wow that thing had the worst body roll worst transmission throttle tip in it was just jerky but I had a nice harming carbon stereo lol. Mitsubishi I remember in the '90s didn't have a sub brand for luxury but they had a lot of cool cars, they were like Hyundai after a decade, respectable. Most of the vehicles and montero's they're hard to find a single to low amount of owners and their dealerships sell to just about anybody so the maintenance kind of goes with they get a lifestyle. I'm importing one I'm South America with 30,000 original miles
I still think this model is the best 4x4 ever made, I had the 2.5 version for years and loved it. We have the next gen 3.5 now and as nice as it is it’s not the car it’s predecessor was.
I recently became the owner of a 95 pajero super exceed and I absolutely love it!! It snowed 6 feet where I live recently and I was so excited driving through all the snow like it was nothing, I can’t wait to take it to the mountains this summer 😅
The Pajero also had smaller variants, in Japan it was called the Pajero Mini and Pajero Junior. They were similar in size, though the difference between the two models is the Mini was a Kei-Car spec model with a 659cc Inline-4 (Naturally-Aspirated or Turbocharged) and the Junior has wider fenders and a Naturally-Aspirated 1.1L Inline-4 engine. This approach of mini SUVs was done in the present day with Suzuki's Jimny (JDM Kei-Spec) and Jimny Sierra (1.3L Global Spec). Then there was also a small wheelbase 5-door SUV called the Pajero iO or Pinin (depending on region), with a 1.8 or 2.0L Inline-4.
Hey pal, got a 99 plate shogun swb 24v 3000 flared arch, owned last 18yrs no expense spared. Going up in price too. This model has only 14 left on uk roads. If anyone got one don't sell it as last of the true 4x4s , they are beasts in snow.
Many thanks for this review. Greetings from Durban South Africa. I bought my first Pajero SWB 2800 Turbo Diesel in 1999....Savored it for 13 years with 237000kms. Crashed it in 2013 and pined for it for a couple of years. Three months ago I came upon an add on Facebook marketplace...4 thousand dollars later .....my baby is back....same color with the facelift (wide fender version). Your review is on the button regarding versatile capability. Sub Saharan Africa.....here we come again.

In case anybody wants to know, the Suzuki Jimny will go on sale in Mexico in exactly 19 hours and 53 minutes from now. They will only sell 1000 units however.
With my dad we have a Mitsubishi Montero, from 1991. It has a 2.6L 4L Cylinder carburated engine, and it has given us a very good time and great experiences. Certainly is not a good car for city and traffic jams due to the fuel consumption, but for off-roading is still a great car, and it has allowed us to climb some rocky mountains and travel all around the country (I live in Colombia). The 4WD is really useful for a ton of situations, as well as the Throttle knob, and well, it still works fine, even with more than 380 thousand kilometers on it. Something that is unusual over here is the Diesel version of those kind of cars, almost every car on road runs on petrol. Thanks for the video :).
I own a 1988 Dodge Raider, it's in great shape...except, the notoriously problematic 4 cyl motor blew at 175k, it's been parked for 2 years because love it and want to eventually swap a V-8 if I can. I used used it on some serious trails in Colorado, and rarely found spots too difficult to pass, and those were because I knew I'd damage the thing trying, so I passed.
I've had about five Pajero iO, all about 20 years old with some 80,000 km on the clock. Good on compressed up hill snow; 4WD, diff lock, OD, crawler gear range, LSD on the rear diff, in other words an over-engineered transmission. Snow tyres obviously. Auto gearbox an advantage on slippery slopes where you don't want to take your hands off the wheel. The plastic headlights dull over, the glass ones are OK. Short wheel base is choppy over bumps. The coil packs start to give up at around 100,000, but are really easy to identify an change. My record was 10 minutes by the side of the road. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit.
If you had any difficulties finding the parts for the motor, the 4M40 is the same motor that can be found in the 2008 triton, you can actually buy a used motor from south east asia (its pretty much replaced by 4D56 and 4N15 that makes equal or more power than a 4M40) and its kinda cheap. one side note here, the 4M40 on the triton use a mechanical pump instead of a commonrail injection, might be a slight difference in fueling system and its NA
Its a huge shame Mitsubishi is killing off the Pajero. I own a Gen 3 Pajero and love the vehicle, In Australia we didn't get the SWB in Gen 3 but did for Gen 1, 2 & 4. The Pajero is a very under rated 4x4 although it is just as capable as many of the more expensive ones such as the Landcruiser & Prado. Since Covid the price of all 4x4's are increasing here in Australia but the Pajero can still be picked up for a good price and its very possible to find one that has never been off road.
To add to that, I bought it with a specific trim. It is a 2009 NT model, Automatic, with the V6 3.5L variant. That's because those are simpler designed, cheaper to maintain, produce more power and use less fuel than the Diesel versions. The Diesel versions have their strengths in longer driving range, and higher torque in the low-gear range. But these did not make sense to me, as those could be done better with something like the Toyota FJ Cruiser. And being the latest 4th-gen Pajero/Shogun/Montero variant, which spanned from 2007-2020. This means hopefully mine should last a long time with lots of parts available. I even saw a 1997 Pajero Evolution, and was going to buy that. But that car actually had less power and performance, it didn't have all the creature comforts of the modern car, and is just really difficult to service for parts. You may as well just do a bodykit on the SWB Pajero instead. Again, the Pajero is great for snow and sand off-roading thanks to its SSII drivetrain, and it's Rally-Specific bodywork (monocoque stiffness). It is similar to the Toyota FJ Cruiser in some respects. If you wanted to do something on the asphalt, you would want a soft-roader, one with an AWD system instead (eg RAV4). And if you wanted to go on the rock and mud, you would want a different setup (Ladder Frame, Diesel, High Clearance) something like Prado or Land Cruiser.
I have a 1996 3.5 V6. It has active height control, factory Recaro seats and electric sunroof there the glass goes over the roof. These things are out of this world❤
I love my Montero. It really is the budget Land Cruiser, I own a '99 V6 Montero Winter Package and I LOVE the blister fenders on the 2.5 Gen. Super capable, impressive off-road capabilities and super cheap maintenance. Mine has 260,000 miles as of this comment and it still continues to kick butt on and off-road. The sad thing is that the consumer market is now becoming more interested on them so prices are going up. Finding parts is a bit scarce, specially for the diesel versions but all and all it's a must have vehicle is you don't want to spend a tremendous amount of dough on any of its counterparts. Just don't get anything less than a V6 because they ARE SLOW.
Beautifull Montero, look's impressive and very clean. My son owned the same model ( SWB ), but with an 2.5 turbo diesel intercooler engine with automátic transmission, and I'm proud to be the owner of a 2.8 turbo diesel intercooler LWB gen. 2.5, now with 325k on the clock, and run's like new, love those asian 4wd icons.
I got a 5 door for 2 years . i have to say IT IS Real Fun Car for off road . what ever i play rock sand dirt mud or in the dry season river .Pajero could always took me in and took me home .
Honestly, I feel like the offroad community is sleeping on this car so much. Pajero is a legend of Paris-Dakar and for the price, it's a superb choice not only for offroading but also for daily driving. In Poland where I live, you can get a running Pajero for dirt cheap- I've seen a few for less than 5k PLN (some 2k USD) in ok condition- and they come in so many versions that there is one for pretty much everyone: Diesel and Petrol, 3 and 5 doors, Spartan and Luxurious, 100% Stock and Modded out the Ass. The only reason I didn't buy Pajero yet is that we already have a 4x4 and there is no room for another one.
It really is. I have used my bone stock Pajero/Montero/Dodge Raider to pull out jeeps and 😮 mighty land cruisers in the woods. They were giving me crap about my little truck and saying they were gonna get slowed down having to pull my truck out of spots 😂 It was the other way around
Hello I am from honduras and last week i bought a "montero" 2008 4th generation, is a wonderful car. Good for highway and better for off road. The car is extremely comfortable.
Great video, awesome editing and music! I own two Monteros (a 91 LWB and a 99 w/ Winter Package) and they're both a blast to take off-road. They're mostly forgotten over in the US, but globally the Pajero is a widely known name. People love these things!
This model is the first Pajero in my life, my dad bought it when I was 15 years old and now I am owning the 3.2 DID 200HP Pajero but I still prefer our old 2nd Gen Pajero!!
@@magnumllama400 Yes for offroad upgrading. But the DID is better by far on road (stability, performance, safety, comfort...) PS: DID means direct injection diesel
I got a gen 1 Montero from my schools auto shop for 500$ it needs some work like seal replacements and other little things but over all but absolutely love it
Your editing and presentation were amazing as usual. I really loved the history lesson and using the old television as a surround. Keep up the great work dude!
As a pajero owner i can say that your version is very richly equipped. I have mine pajero for 3 years and it,s quite good car maybe It,s not a off road monster but gives a fun on mud and sand.
So here in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 you can find 2016 4th Gen Montero with that exact 4M40 diesel engine with a manual transmission but a long wheel base. My brother have a 2008 4th gen Montero short wheelbase and its the high trim level. It uses the same engine, and 4WD technology... after the 3rd gen they are all Independent suspension front and back.
Love it!!!! You forgot just one variant that is relevant to the American market. Dodge Raider. I owned an 89 3.0 V6. As a raider it was only offered in a short wheelbase two-door. Love that truck. I know someone who owns a proper Evo version and it is amazing. PS. The back seats flip forward one more time once the backs are folded down. The driver's seat should also have an adjustable suspension knob underneath it. A quirk worth mentioning
I am from Brazil and I'm crazy to get one. They are gorgeous and very capable... also very cheap! Thanks for the best video of this car on UA-cam. Made my day!
The BEST 4x4 of all time in my eyes…extremely reliable! For a ten year old Pajero when I bought mine in 2004… I had one let down in the ten years I was driving as a daily…alternator! Then it got stolen! 😒… gutted man!… never find another like it although I can still find mine on Google Earth street view from 2010! 😂
I have a 2002 Montero LTD that has 247k miles, been down more fire roads and 4x4 only Jeep roads than you can count, and been air born, flying 12’ like a bird and landing just fine many many dozens of times. It’s almost bulletproof, and I’d buy another one in a New York second... but they don’t sell these in the states anymore.
maybe im getiing old but 4x4's in general are so much fun, ive always went for fast sporty cars and now recetly got my first 4x4 and they are so comfy and durable for everyday use. dont know why i didnt buy one earlier
Ethan, It looks like you found a nimble, old school and right-sized SUV. With the 2 door Wrangler plus the 2 door Defender currently on sale and a 2 door Bronco on the way, it is time for other makers to bring their 2 door 4X4s to market. I don't know what Mitsubishi builds today but there is definitely a 2 door Toyota Prado ready to go.
I had a two door Dodge Raider, first cousin to the Pajero. I don't recall the model year, but most likely late 80's. I took it to W. Africa and had a blast with it for the two years I lived there. It was fun to drive.
There is also the Suzuki Samurai (Jimny) as well. I know that the Suzuki model is small in size then the Pajero, but it also has a history for Suzuki as well.
These cars which i like, not delicate ultra complicated cars that need service every 5k km Subscribed in this channel, waiting for more of these legendary cars.
This is awesome. I have a 1993 Pajero Full equipped with the 4D56 turbo and a 5 speed manual, absolutely love it. Comfortable, sturdy, amazing legroom/headroom, very practical, has a nice visibility (since it's basically a brick) and it's pretty fun to drive. Great on the trails and also a fantastic daily driver, perfect for long trips too. While performance-wise it isn’t nowhere near impressive, it’s still adequate. Also, 26 MPG city, easily. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a real SUV with some old school “jeep” feel.
Yes, I know what Pajero means in Spanish 😆😬🤔

Again, the Pajero is great for snow and sand off-roading thanks to its SSII drivetrain, and it's Rally-Specific bodywork (monocoque stiffness). It is similar to the Toyota FJ Cruiser in some respects. If you wanted to do something on the asphalt, you would want a soft-roader, one with an AWD system instead (eg RAV4). And if you wanted to go on the rock and mud, you would want a different setup (Ladder Frame, Diesel, High Clearance) something like Prado or Land Cruiser.
Bro I had one the current gen and it's good but my bro crashed it and here in Qatar they still sell these legends
i witnessed the kenya rally in 1974 the lancer was driven by jugindar singh what a rally hero he was
Here in Portugal we love to take them off road! They're everywhere (in the competitions).
I own one and driven it for the last 20 years and it's still moving on well
I have a 1996 3.5 V6.
Your channel keeps getting better and better
Thanks so much!! :) :)
The dodge raider was a mitsibishi in the 80’s the North American. I knew someone who had one(The 2 door model).
Agreed. These are underrated!
I am huge fan of the Pajero. Back to the glory days of Dakar. Love this! great video Ethan
Great video, awesome editing and music! I own two Monteros (a 91 LWB and a 99 w/ Winter Package) and they're both a blast to take off-road. They're mostly forgotten over in the US, but globally the Pajero is a widely known name. People love these things!
I had this model long ago and it's a great car. I used on camping, outdoors, hiking etc. And then family came to, so I moved to the bigger model, 1994
That is exactly what I want. To have a Pajero like that one.
I am hoping I can bring one over from Japan. I just loved it
I drove 1st gen. for 12 years, now driving 2nd generation, both are excellent suv.
As an owner of a 95 SWB Pajero for the past 4 years I can confirm everything in this video is true, I look forward to driving daily because of it :)
This is the car that i grew up with. My father would only buy pajero or montero from mid 90s till late 00s
This model is the first Pajero in my life, my dad bought it when I was 15 years old and now I am owning the 3.2 DID 200HP Pajero but I still prefer our old 2nd Gen Pajero!!
Bro what does DID mean?
2nd gen pajero was the best
@@magnumllama400 Yes for offroad upgrading. But the DID is better by far on road (stability, performance, safety, comfort...)
PS: DID means direct injection diesel
I got a gen 1 Montero from my schools auto shop for 500$ it needs some work like seal replacements and other little things but over all but absolutely love it
Your editing and presentation were amazing as usual. I really loved the history lesson and using the old television as a surround. Keep up the great work dude!
Thank you very much! Really appreciate it!! :)
I drove a 5dr version of this back in College. Beautiful ride. Miss that car!
I have the same Pajero but automatic in the caribbean. A total capable beast. love it
oh good old 90's Japanese cars, quality and interesting era of cars
I recently bought a 2020 Pajero sport, nice to see the name has rallly DNA
As a pajero owner i can say that your version is very richly equipped. I have mine pajero for 3 years and it,s quite good car maybe It,s not a off road monster but gives a fun on mud and sand.
Wow, that thing is much cooler than I expected. Might like the flashlight even more than those headrests. Mmmmm, donuts.
I wish more automakers would make small SUVs like this.
I daily drive a 93 it’s my pride and joy. And it’s fun showing yota guys what’s up
Someone’s headed to 1 million subs!
Working on it!! 😀
This channel is solid with a gifted host. 👍
I love it, I own a 95 SWB with a 4d56 engine, a very fun car to drive.
Are you based in the UK?
Ah that sucks yours got stolen!! 😢😢😢
@@djyems1021 yep
@@HelloRoad yep
@@HelloRoad in fact….I would have preferred my limited edition p38 rangey vogue got stolen!!
I am a proud owner of a first generation Pajero! I have the rally style like this one and it is a gem.
Nice!!! Love the look of these.
What a neat vehicle! I wasn't aware of those at all. Very well done video, as always.
may i ask hows the fuel consumption?
I love seeing oddball cars like this. Keep up the content, man!
I own a 1995 SR gen 2 and a 2002 Gen 3 Limited. Love them both!
maybe im getiing old but 4x4's in general are so much fun, ive always went for fast sporty cars and now recetly got my first 4x4 and they are so comfy and durable for everyday use. dont know why i didnt buy one earlier
My dream SUV! Not the full sized one, but this! looks so compact and is reliable.
They need to bring this style back ASAP!
You have my attention, sir
I thought you might be interested in this one :)
As a NYer, I’ve no need to own one; but absolutely love these!
If they price that Prado like the base FJ Toyota has a hit and future classic.
@@1northsparrow246 Cheaper is better.
Pity that we in the States never got it, but the GAZ 69 SUVs from the Soviet Union are absolutely legendary for those reasons as well.
I had a model of one of these when I was a kid. Such a good design.
I had a two door Dodge Raider, first cousin to the Pajero. I don't recall the model year, but most likely late 80's. I took it to W. Africa and had a blast with it for the two years I lived there. It was fun to drive.
I recently bought one and although very sadly will be no more , it will live for a very long time to come! Thank you for reveiw.
They still make the Pajero Sport.
@@michaelclark3192 not the same level of thrill and fun
There is also the Suzuki Samurai (Jimny) as well. I know that the Suzuki model is small in size then the Pajero, but it also has a history for Suzuki as well.
Still have one and have loads before. Best suv there ever will be.
I just got the 2.4 version 99’ I am in love with it just 60 original miles ❤
These cars which i like, not delicate ultra complicated cars that need service every 5k km
Subscribed in this channel, waiting for more of these legendary cars.
Yes this 2800 is one of the best I still have 1 of this model very strong and good
I have an 88 Dodge Raider which is a badge engineered Pajero. The most capable off road vehicle i have ever seen.
This baby was made for me! Love it! I do vaguely remember a Shogun. Great vid. ❤
Thank you!!!
Mitsubishi motors should officially thankful to you how sophisticatedly you represent their brand , at least in my opinion
Love those wheels. They look like some OZs.
This is a sick little truck , I've got a 2001 xls Montero and this video makes me appreciate them even more , great job Mitsubishi 👏🙏
Is it pretty reliable?
@@otiplacyendor8672 Absolutely.
