The 6G74 was pretty advanced for the day. Like all of the “276 hp” engines of the day, the actual output was usually much higher, and the engines had a ton of tuning left in them. Turbo kits are readily available and power output can be pushed into the stratosphere. I’m curious how the actual Dakar versions were tuned.
Depends on what year, the regulations changed a lot. But Mitsubishi's 6G engines were incredibly tough. The 6G75 which is the 3.8 petrol in Gen 3 and 4 Pajeros regularly has been modified to 400hp+ and is a bulletproof design. A fun fact is that Mitsubishi entered in a few Dakar models a redesigned block from the 6G75 where it was run as a 3.0 V6 quad compound turbo diesel (yes QUAD). They were only allowed a tiny 19mm air restrictor on the intake yet even so it made 206kW and 520Nm of torque. Opened up it is estimated that it would easily have made over 400hp and 800-1000Nm from a 3.0 diesel in the early 2000s which is just mental.
This just confirms what I've been believing the last couple years... cars from the 90s are peak desireable cars, and it's been downhill since. Reliable, simple to fix and a somewhat clean simple design.

Cool thing about that rear diff is the Gen 2 Pajero solid axle cars also used it. So, if they were equipped with the air locking differential you got to have a Torsen when unlocked and then could fully lock it up when you needed to. Also, you don't need to be in neutral to shift into 4H, you only have be below 100kph.

“Paja” in spanish means to “jerk off”. “Pajero” means “he who jerks off”. So after a bit they changed the pajero name to montero in Spanish speaking countries.
Glad to see there are many people still remembering this legend. 25 year rule brings so many fantasy JDM cars to North America recently and makes the price become crazy in used car market in Japan.....I am not sure how many JDM cars I can still find in Japan after 10 years. At least Mitsubishi EVO I~III and Subaru GC08 are very rare in Japan now.
I had a 2006 Montero. I drive just like you describe this Pajero. I rode so smoothly at triple digits, super comfortable, and turned like on rails for such a big vehicle. I lost it when an Adui S5 decided to kiss the front of it at about 15 mph. You can imagine how the S5 ended up. Still searching for an SUV that provided the enjoyment I had driving it. Sad Mitsu stopped production 2021.
80-90's was Japan's auto industry golden era. so many legendary names came from that time. Evolution, Ralliart, Skyline, Type R, NSX, Supra etc. Now their cars don't have the flair that they once had. They also struck fear in the hearts of German and Italian auto makers.
You said SS4... Can we be friends?? lol loved this video. Only owner to a '12 EVO X. Loved learning the lore behind this vehicle that I didn't even know existed until an hour ago. Keep pumping out content Bruddah!!
Very underrated car. Unfortunately they no longer make such cars today. It's almost like car companies forgot how to make good simple utility cars. The EVO version is great for fun only. But If you want to go offroud you should get the standard version with solid rear axle and factory airlocker. 3.5V6 is strong motor. But Diesel is better for offroud if don't need to go fast. I bought one for my gold prospecting adventures for $3.5K SWB 3 door 2.5 TD manual. Permanently locked center diff and factory air locker in the back. It's surprisingly capable offroud. It has good factory steel protection plates under the engine and gearbox. Front suspension is adjustable. And the rear is very easy to lift with simple springs swap. Add some good MT tires and it goes everywhere. It's on par with modern 4 Runner or Bronco. But 10 times cheaper.😃
Man you make a video on best 4x4 of all times and then don't take it anywhere off road. Not even for a leisurely stroll through the woods on an easy trail. Well done boys, well done!

Had a buddy who -17 years ago- bought a (second hand) stock base Mitsubishi Pajero 4-door (5 door, okay), then bought a Pajero EVO (second hand) from Japan, stripped the stock base pajero from as good as everything (including the frigging wiring harnass), replaced it with all the parts of the Pajero EVO, including suspension and even chassis parts, did bodywork to fit the rear wheel arches on the 4-door, and KEEP the rear doors funcional, then TUNED the EVO block, added either a supercharger or a turbo - i don't remember which, and it did about 380 on the dyno. Had an improved clutch, used special oils/lubrifications, and had his nephew completely reprogram the computer ECU, and the car was an absolute beast. the missus REALLY did not like it as she wanted him to buy a SUV for the kids, but one has to admire his ingenuity to get this done. His wife was half-Japanese btw, had some connections that helped with 'importing' and getting cheap deals. He actually enjoyed the car and really went with it. It was the time of Fast & Furious 2 & Tokyo drift so tuning scene was in it's full swing. He went to those 'local meetings', did beach offroading, did some 'overlanding' etc. Unfortunately, he got mauled by a semi that ignored the red lights and it was totaled. Guy ended up hospitalized for like 3 months before he could walk again. A year or two later it turned out he needed chemo not the least because he worked in fiberglass daily without proper protection (he made camper van modifications). He also smoked like a chimney untill he got kids. Unfortunately lost the battle. But i remember his custom 'EVO' to this day.
There are so many cars from the Pajero era which were legendary. Not sure though but global motorsports from this era was just as exiting as any sports final. From the rally car wars between Mitsubishi, subaru and Toyota. To the Dakar rally where u had Mitsubishi, Toyota and even the old school pathfinder going at it. To Le Man's 24 hours which helped revive audi motorsports, (which for some reason they couldn't make a car that lasted more than 10 years...). But thanks to throttle house for finding these gems
i owned one of the first ones to come to Canada. Sunk it in a nasty pond in Yellowknife Northwest Territories. froze in there over night, got demolished trying to pop it back up over the ice. Had to let it go Can say from experience, best 4x4 ever made. Favorite car of all time, perfect for Canada.

8 seconds 0-60 mph in 1997 was very quick for a SUV.

We support Thomas no matter what choices he makes in his orientation. We love you all the same Thomas.
I've been lucky enough to own two normal Pajeros/Montero's. I love them. Everything about them. Driving position, comfort factor, ability to go ANYWHERE. I'll buy another in a heartbeat. I just wish we could still get them.
Good video guys and thank you for posting it, as a Pajero Evo owner of 8 years I love seeing videos on this crazy 4WD, but can I say No, the rally cars did not have an auto, this keeps getting said :) , the rally cars had a sequential or dog engagement manual depending on the spec, but again thanks for posting this top video :)
Yeah, no way they used an automatic for racing
I can’t describe why, but I love how good this looks.
The best mistubishi ever made, this would probably be the only vehicle that could redeem Mitsubishi if they re-released it
You've obviously never seen a Mirage...
@@Fluffyninja7 I live in Australia, there's mirages everywhere, have blown one up and been in the car when the flywheel disintegrated doing reverse donuts. They're good fun but they aren't an unnecessary fun turbo mum-bus
This and the Lancer
@@pizzaparlour21 I'm pretty sure he was joking, the Mirage is a hilariously horrid small hatchback.
@@natebarry5553 new ones are, 90’s and early 2000’s mirage where sporty cars you could even get a 2 door coupe with a 1.8L engine
This is the only 4X4 I would ever look at. SUVs are the scourge of the automotive world, but this car is amazing
I immediately went and started pricing them and I immediately knew that I couldn't afford it🤣😂 Great video👊
Weird. I immediately went and started watching Letterkenny.
Price?
Your channel keeps getting better and better. Thank you!
We have to start a petition to get this vehicle into Gran Turismo 7.
The last few sales I can find of these in the UK were around £13k-£18k, can't imagine that's gonna stay the case for any others that come up!
Following you guys from Bangladesh and coming to Canada. It was a fun ride for me to be honest.
Currently reading at Windsor and you've shot this video in southern Ontario, gives me goosebumps.
Hope to meet you one day 🤍
Why does it look so good tough god damn
even by modern standarts imo
I'm a proud driver of a Pajero 2.5, 3.0 V6 and I can tell by the grab handle by the door that that car has seen a lot of use.
You can still find the gen 3 monteros around plenty of them in the south states if America
80-90's was Japan's auto industry golden era. so many legendary names came from that time. Evolution, Ralliart, Skyline, Type R, NSX, Supra etc.
Now their cars don't have the flair that they once had. They also struck fear in the hearts of German and Italian auto makers.
My dream SUV!! Great work as always from Throttle house!!!!!!
Just love this car review style, never just giving an opinion without questioning it
You said SS4... Can we be friends?? lol loved this video. Only owner to a '12 EVO X. Loved learning the lore behind this vehicle that I didn't even know existed until an hour ago. Keep pumping out content Bruddah!!
When Paris Dakar rally was the real deal and not the one today. This was UNTOUCHABLE ❤.
Still a proud owner of my 3.2 DID Pajero. And I'm not getting rid of it any time soon and it's the manual version! I love this thing!
I think this is one of the few JDM cars where the automatic transmission is more desirable than the manual...if not the only one.
The reason I own a last gen pajero was the pajero evo at the end of my road. It's in red and daily driven by this wonderful older gentleman.
James : and quite a lot of messing around.
Also James : **bonk**
I hope that never leaves the intro
@@jabcmw1 makes me laugh and cringe EVERY TIME!!!
Hello Thomas , Glad to see you in New Video , Allways Like Pajero Also The Steering Wheel is on Proper Side 👍
I just want mistubushi back, someone save this company from dying
Man you make a video on best 4x4 of all times and then don't take it anywhere off road. Not even for a leisurely stroll through the woods on an easy trail. Well done boys, well done!
In Spanish the Mitsubishi Pajero means Mitsubishi Wanker. There's a reason why the Pajero is called Montero or Shogun depending on where you live.
Couldn't help but notice the Omega Speedster with that leather strap - looks absolutely gorgeous!
James almost cried he wasn’t there 🥹
Thoughts before watching: "A video about some random SUV? Laaame"
Thoughts now knowing it's amazing rally racing history: "I NEEEEED IT!"
yo guys!!! made my day
Greatest throttle house episode ever! Love the Pajero EVO my dream truck
"Pajero" is slang in Spanish for...One who plays with himself. Have fun with that one.
My grandfather had a Pajero II and a Pajero III. What fantastic cars they were. Greetings from Poland.
As someone who mostly just drives pajys I dream! Of owning one of these. I've had the 3.5, 3.8 and ATM I have the 3.2td direct injection. I love them all. My baby's ❤️
I've never quite fancied older vehicles, I feel they compromise too much in today's age, but this one . . . this one seems neat.
Omg I never clicked so fast! After your tiered price video, I knew when Thomas picked this, we’d see it in a later video.
I have a 2004 Pajero full and it's an actual war tank. Thank you for giving it the prestige it deserves
you guys are so informative, knowledgeable, and FUNNY! AND Canadian(ish)! my #1 UA-cam car video channel!!!
Excellent reviews. Congrats. I have a Pajero Full 2 Doors V6 2004 in Brazil and it is really a car beyond its time.
Now that's an Off road beast... I remember when they were winning Dakar and dominating the off road scene. It's a beautiful vehicle.
I got serious Jeremy Clarkson in BBC Top-Gear vibes when Thomas cut to the Dakar footage...
Please keep this up!
Regards, from a Canadian. (eh)
Opened the hood of my top trim VW Touareg (2014) and i see "Mitsubishi electronics" behind the headlights ;) Mitsubishi engineering is phenomenal
Proud to drive a 98 2 door mitsubishi pajero target, one of the best looking truck of that era😍💪
i owned one of the first ones to come to Canada. Sunk it in a nasty pond in Yellowknife Northwest Territories. froze in there over night, got demolished trying to pop it back up over the ice. Had to let it go
Can say from experience, best 4x4 ever made. Favorite car of all time, perfect for Canada.
Beautiful!!! probably one of the best 4x4 of all times... at least of this last 30 years... because nowadays there is not so much that could be like it.
Excellent video. You guys truly just keep getting better and better. Nice little escape from the realities of today's world.
I loveeee the way that looks!! Props for giving a shout out to the early FXTs, as an '05 owner that was a nice little bonus, they really are fantastic cars!
Just saw the the pic and smashed the like button before finishing the whole vid
It's nice to see more people "getting it" with respect to the greatness of the Pajero/Montero
Neat vehicle. Never seen one.. will be on the lookout now that I know. The intro was funny AF!
