I learned more on this video than I expected to especially when you showed how to not catch a deer by putting the stick there for a deer to have to step over. Great info
some advice if you do a under ice trapping series, particularly for muskrat, you can use orange or white flagging tape for under ice conibear or leghold feed sets. how it works is it looks like something edible orange carrots or white parsnips or potato. it seems to really work.
Great video Dave very educational. Would love to come to your school one of these days. I learned alot on snare from this video. Thanx alot keep up the good work.
It was good to meet you at the FTA College this past year. If I may offer one note I have observed in the field while setting trails for Coyotes. Yotes notice when things are moved around too much and the less we touch, the less human scent. At pinch points, I use small, thin stuff to break up the outline of my loop to provide subtle fencing. I even start the subtle fencing back from the snare. A chin lifter is always a good idea. Hope to see you back at FTA in 2013.
Hey Dave, I have a few tips. When connecting your snare just run the snare through the end loop and wire off, no need for the clip. If you do not wire your snare down to the tree, critters will climb the tree, get loose and you lose the animal and snare. Also loop size helps prevent body catches and fur damage. 5-6inw x 5-6inh for coon, fox, otter, small game. 8-10inw x 8-10inh for beaver, cat, yotes. Use 9 or 11 gauge wire for tie down and support. Just tips I was taught by old timers hope it helps
Thanks Dave for the info and videos. I have been watching you for awhile. I am really trying to get my wife and son involved and learning how to survive in the wild so they will know what to do when the Crap hits the fan. Love the videos watched them all and will soon be buying from your website. Once again thanks for sharing your survival knowledge with us all.
This answered my snaring questions. Oh, on the subject of quick arrow fletching, here's an item that is useful. Its a one piece, black rubber. slip on fletching that is sold for fishing arrows called Quick Fletch. Mud Shark Archery carried them for a minimal price. I keep three of them handy with a ready made bow string and some plastic nocks. Weighs nothing and saves a lot of work.
Ohio is a shall issue state for CCW as well, so you don't need extenuating circumstances to get a CCW. I've been researching it, thinking about moving out there.
I used to drill rat traps to tree trunks where i've seen cracked acorns.. lather them up with peanut butter and strategically place and acorn on there.... squirrel meat for weeks!!!
It's so much cheaper and a lot more fun to make your own. Memory in a snare refers to loading it and that is super simple. You buy 100 cam locks pretty cheap. Just go to snareshop.com or snareone.com for all of your trapping needs. I make all of my own hog snares. Also, the thing that he was talking about that stops the lock from closing past a certain point, is called a deer stop and most states require them because snaring deer is illegal. Or you can do it bushcraft style and use military grade paracord, I do it all of the time. Buying snares, is such a waste of money.
Amazon carries Boone wire fishing leaders in 10 packs which are easily converted to small game snares. 24 inch for under $10 and 18 inch under $9. Both are 40 pound test which is plenty for small game.
You can cover up human scent on snares with charcoal powder. Just take dry charcoal, powdered and apply it to the trap. Do not add water. A little water is fine, but too much can create a caustic compound. Charcoal on your hands is ok but try not to apply the charcoal wet.
Crazy cool! I like caribeaners do my fasteners for both leg holds and snares. They are fast on and off and more secure then the fastener used here. Just my opinion. Great video Dave thanks for posting!
3/32 7x7 cable is .30 a foot, home made washer lock .13 each, aluminum stop and double stops .40 for each snare. Total cost for a snare that will catch everything from squirrel to deer is roughly $2.33, and that's for a 6' snare.
i have had lots of luck using wire leaders like you use for shark fishing 18- 24 inches long, kinda a premade snare and fairly cheap to buy in packs of 5 - 10 or more
Nice post Dave. I'm not at all angry, but I feel a little betrayed with you not using #4 picture wire. Anyway, I LOVE your videos and info, you’re a good man. Can you give any advice on using "signaling" devices on snares, like a bell or something? To tell a trapper that a snare has been set. I don’t know if this is a new idea or a currently utilized one, but seem a like a decent idea to me. Your thought would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! And again great video and info as always!
Why not have a 36 inch snare then a barrel swivel and a 6 or 7 foot extension with an adjustable end? With them wire swivels they wrap around a stick and you've lost all your swiveling action. It also looked like your snares weren't loaded, or am I mistaken?
Dave is that a Galco holster you have your Ruger sigle six in? What else do you do with that revolver besides dispatch animals in traps? Can you talk about sidearms sometime? Great vids thanks for all the great info.
I liked the idea of the swivel, locking mechanisms and quick clips; more humane and simpler to use. Can the larger 7x7 snares also be used on much smaller game as well as bigger game?
Dave i watch trapping part # 7 where you show packing the dirt around the trap.Ok that trap you use in that vid was a I think a double spring pan trap.My question is do I pack the dirt around a single spring # 2 the same way
rope can be chewed through by animals with sharp teeth or even persistent animal. rope also has more resistance and wont slide closed. especially a strong one. wire is less resistant and more durable for teething animals. i have tried with rope... i failed miserably
what do you do if you snare a skunk ? is there a way of stoping it from spraying you ? and how long should you cook racoons, skunks, and beavers ect. ? shoud you be concerned about disease ?
Btw... how many snares at a minimum would you recommended putting out in an area? And how often should you check them. Also when you caught the pig in that trap on dual survival, that was awesome lol cody being molly homemaker i laughed so hard. Again thanks
I have to say your sent is there but if setting bait.. More times than not.. Your critter will go for the bait and not bother or care that your sent is there. ;)
so, dave, i'll go on a phew days out in the wilderness in two days, i'll be tryng to live off the land, the problem is that i did not buy snares. you sure have plenty of experience, or someone who does, can you tell me how many chance do i stand to succeed snaring something whit an improvised wire snare? by the way, i live in the alps
I visited your website looking at getting some of the small games snares. Right now I am looking into snarring rabbits. Are the snares on your website the same in this video?
im a city boy so im probably wrong but wouldnt signals just help predators find ur catch? or would something like that be more likely to scare them off? love all your vids btw..so glad you got a show or i may have never seen how important all this information is. thank you :0)
My friend and i Set up some snare for one night for see if it would work and we used fishing line for the snares and my friend made the worst snare i thought would never catch anything and we set up some snares we thoguht were perfect and of course my friends crudy snare caught the only thing and it was a deer thank goodness the deer broke the fishing line imagine if we had to free a deer i dont know wht i would do but mabye shot it/ we know it was a deer from trakes and they were low snares
no segment about power snares example ram power snare, belisle foot snare could you do a segment about power snares please in some places thats only legal option besides live traps alternative for steel leg trap would be belisle foot snare alternative for conibear would be ram power snare in florida
do u sell snare wire on your web site? does it have to be snare wire or could it be something like paracord? would that work? and what game could it get?
Dave, I've been looking for a way to email you but havent found one. Mind sharing with me? Reason I ask is I have some beginner trapping questions to ask you for a trapping trip I want to make with a friend. Thanks
These videos are the reasons why I buy from you. You truly care about your viewers, and customers.
I learned more on this video than I expected to especially when you showed how to not catch a deer by putting the stick there for a deer to have to step over. Great info
I just want to let you know how much I appreciate your videos. This is invaluable
information
As always, real person, real knowledge, no bullshit. Thank you . All the best for you and your family.

Great advice thank you. Here in the UK by the way all snares must be running snares locks are illegal.

Thanks for posting this. Snares are something I know very little about.
Thanks Dave I always learn a lot from your videos.

Absolutely agreed on buying snares. Love your videos, no snares in NC though.
Always good stuff.
steel leader wire works great for snares.
Northern Ca needs an Outdoor school. Lots of woodland
I use snares made from a fishing swivel and medium strength wire. You obviously don't need to carry stakes, as you can make them from any hardwood.
Why not have a 36 inch snare then a barrel swivel and a 6 or 7 foot extension with an adjustable end? With them wire swivels they wrap around a stick and you've lost all your swiveling action. It also looked like your snares weren't loaded, or am I mistaken?

great job keep up the good work, i live in ohio and love your channel. keep em comming
Great video as always Dave!!
You can use 550 cord or bankline but there is a higher chance the animal will chew through it.
I thought you couldn't eat skunk? Did I hear wrong?
Also.. what do you do with the fur? Sell it?
Thanks for the great video
I liked the idea of the swivel, locking mechanisms and quick clips; more humane and simpler to use. Can the larger 7x7 snares also be used on much smaller game as well as bigger game?
whens the "on the waters edge p 10" coming up,love those episodes.

So now that you have taken the course, you would no longer suggest making your own snares from picture wire?
Thanks for sharing,great info,super video!
Btw... how many snares at a minimum would you recommended putting out in an area? And how often should you check them. Also when you caught the pig in that trap on dual survival, that was awesome lol cody being molly homemaker i laughed so hard. Again thanks
Great snares. Thank you.
I have to say your sent is there but if setting bait.. More times than not.. Your critter will go for the bait and not bother or care that your sent is there. ;)
is there some sort of a rule for example the snare can hold an animal that weighs up to the breaking point of the snare?
Dave those aren't "dakota ghost rider" snares are they? Because those are the only ones I can find on your site and they don't look like them.
Nice job on video once again.
what kind of pants are those? I really appreciate the information Dave.
love your vids you go brother
Awsome video very informative.
The trip stick ! I never thought that thanks Dave always learn something new .
if you make your snare about 6 inches in diameter and 6 inches off the ground you get less body catches
Dave are you usually worried at all about leaving scent at the trap site?
i use picture wire for small game and throttle cables off of scrap motorbikes for coyotes, is that overkill or am i ok with the gauge?
so, dave, i'll go on a phew days out in the wilderness in two days, i'll be tryng to live off the land, the problem is that i did not buy snares. you sure have plenty of experience, or someone who does, can you tell me how many chance do i stand to succeed snaring something whit an improvised wire snare? by the way, i live in the alps

does it matter about the smell you mite leave behind when you do this? or any traping?
Best intro.
Would you please tuck that belt in,,,,makes me nervous. Good series im enjoying!
what about the snares that you showed in the video: building a discount bushcraft kit 2?
Do you recommend only wire of some kind or can you use something like 550 cord?
I wish I could get out into the wood and practice :( This knee surgery is killing woods time.
Jeremy
no segment about power snares example ram power snare, belisle foot snare could you do a segment about power snares please in some places thats only legal option besides live traps alternative for steel leg trap would be belisle foot snare alternative for conibear would be ram power snare in florida
ohio has open carry??? sweet!!!!!! here in florida its ccw only!
i know you've said this before, but what pistol are you using?
what kind of bait would you use for pheasants
Hay brother please get someone to film for ya ,so they can zoom in. I couldn't see how you placed everything thanks friend .
good info! thanks
do u sell snare wire on your web site? does it have to be snare wire or could it be something like paracord? would that work? and what game could it get?
what .22 are you packing for dispatching critters?
whats the song at the start called grouse song i reckon
Can you please review your pair of muck boots
what is the wammy made out of????
Dave, I've been looking for a way to email you but havent found one. Mind sharing with me? Reason I ask is I have some beginner trapping questions to ask you for a trapping trip I want to make with a friend. Thanks
thanks
-cole
where are these snares available?
what is wrong with a strong rope
do you need to worry about human scent on snares? also, whats up with comment pending???
Why doesn't someone manufacture snares that are already earth tone painted?
What's the song at the end...thanks
where can you buy snares?
as in the animals could chew through it, sorry for not being specific
i think living good in the woods by blackhorse band
the animal could chew through it even though it 550 pound test get picture wire
Another advantage using cordage other than wire is that it can be saturated with lure.
...i think i would rather give up a snare and a meal than go close to an alive skunk
hey dave ask micheal henniger about the new writer in SRI its me im the 13 yr old :D
