"Nothing succeeds like success, as the saying goes, but in the case of Donald Duck the opposite is true: the candor with which Donald reveals his weaknesses wins our hearts and stays with us forever.
Revisit Donald’s life’s work from nine decades in one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe. Following Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse: The Ultimate History by TASCHEN, we witness the career of Mickey’s only rival for the throne as Disney’s most popular creation. From his debut in the Silly Symphony short film The Wise Little Hen on June 9, 1934, the authors trace Donald’s more than 170 cartoons, groundbreaking adventures in comics and TV, and theme park appearances. As a special treat to his fans, they also dive deep into the vaults to tell the story of his unfinished film projects.
With unprecedented access to Disney’s vast historical archives and collections as well as public and private collections, the authors illuminate Donald’s life story with rare concept art, story sketches, background paintings, animation, and comic drawings as well as historical photographs. We encounter the work of all major Donald artists in both film and comics who defined his character, including a vast tribute to the “Duck Man” himself, master storyteller Carl Barks, alongside unseen early storyboard drawings.
In the history of comics, Donald Duck is the most frequently printed figure outside the superhero genre, and has appeared on screen more often than any other Disney character. Since the 1950s, Duckburg has expanded into a truly global village, with American artists being joined by a new generation of international colleagues.
As Carl Barks once said of Donald: “He is everything, he is everybody; he makes the same mistakes that we all make.” He may often be unlucky, but this is precisely why everybody can relate to the world’s most famous and best loved Duck, fittingly celebrated with this monumental tribute."

I'm happy to learn about the history of donald duck.
Awesome!
If David Gerstein is such an "incredible historian" why on pg. 512 does he claim that Tony Anselmo did Donald's voice in Mickey's Christmas Carol when we all know it was Clarence Nash's last film? There are MANY incorrect things in this book!
Amazon is selling this for $200. I was interested until I saw the price. And make no mistake it's not scalpers upselling it, it's actually Amazon.
As I mention in the video, this is a very expensive book - but it is gigantic, nearly 600-pages long, and is built and presented beautifully. $200 is the publisher’s retail price, and it’s worth every last cent.
There will likely be more compact, smaller and affordable versions published over the next couple of years.
That’s what these kinds of history books will go for.
OH MY GOSH I LOVE DONALD
Me too
Me too
When I read "Taschen Book", I thought you meant the german "Lustiges Taschenbuch"-comics...
This is cool but not $200 cool
I hope they do a book of goofy or Minnie mouse or daisy. Duck or Pinocchio or Snow White or Alice in wonderland or dumbo or Bambi or Cinderella
I doubt there would be enough material for a Daisy volume, and a Minnie volume would be far too similar to the Mickey book. Very unlikely any of the movie characters will get books like this - particularly as it took the authors a near decade to release this one.
JB did, however write to HUGE behind-the-scenes books on Snow White and Pinocchio, which are well worth picking up.
Donald Duck is amazing! Looks an amazing book right there too!
I would imagine and hope next volume will be uncle scrooge
Freaking Awesome 👍👍
Need an Oswald book
Unlikely there would be anywhere near as much material to fill a book this size on Oswald. Dave Bossert wrote a fantastic book on Oswald, though. It’s called “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons.” Well worth it if you can find a copy!
I'll definitely check out your Mickey mouse book because I am loving the coverage you're doing on this Donald book! As a big lover of the duck, I must have a copy so I look forward to trying to grab it when I can! Thank you for the heads up/review my brother from Down under! ❤️
Enjoy it!! You’ll have zero regrets!
Can’t wait for the Goofy book in 6 years.
At this rate we will get the entire Sensational Six in 20 years
I still have the Mickey Mouse version and just ordered this Donald version two days ago. I'm looking forward to it. I'm glad it has the cute bookmark like the Mickey one did.
Awesome Dave video!
So cool
These books look amazing. I do like a lot of these art history books myself. I will definatly check both Mickey and Donald books out, thanks Dave
I need this.
Are you gonna post cartoon evolution 2025 edition
What do you mean “Cartoon Evolution 2025 Edition”?
I just thought maybe you can upload cartoon evolution videos in 2025
All I can say is... You lucky duck!
I have both of these books myself, and they are really beautiful!
i hope they do a Goofy one next
Sounds like a pretty decent book to find.
I have got the book about Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse book so I can imagine if Donald Duck doesn’t get one oh my god 😮 his temper will get out of control.
