Hey everyone! Haven't had much time to create any videos the last couple of weeks due to work so I thought i'd upload something I shot a while back! Hope you guys enjoy it, thank you guys for supporting as always! You guys are definitely the absolute best #Kingjvpesfam! Are there any film's you think I should've included in this video?
I absolutely love Kodak Portra 160 and Fuji pro 400h. I also love Kodak tri-x and ilford hp5400. I only tried a few so far but I'm going to try Fuji neopan next. Funny part is I got my pictures develop and scanned with thedarkroom and it comes out better than when I scan it at home. Well, I actually didn't scan the negatives when I got them back but compared to the pics I scanned in the pass, it was definitely better. Is that common or is it just me?
I should add that I get the negatives scanned by house for cheap like 3 dollars and then I use my epson perfection scanner and I tried different settings such as color restoration, back light correction, etc but it still doesn't look as good as the one I got from thedarkroom.
fractal_force they are a pro lab so they're pretty much top of the line!
KingJvpes gotcha, I was really impressed with their services and scans. I can't wait to use them again and this time it will be the neopan
Hey thanks for putting the time in to develope this context. I just got into photography, or at least making the step to purchase a camera. I ended up getting Nikon f2. Your videos are great, they’re clear and concise, with useful information. Again, thanks bruh.
My favorite cheap film for everyday shooting is Kodak Ultra Max 400. Beautiful color performance for a low price. What more could you want for everyday street photography?
bobpeters61 awesome profile pic haha
ikr. i find that sometimes i get better results on the ultra max than kodak ektar.
color plus 200, what are your thoughts?
It is so nice to see a young person who is interested in film photography. Keep shooting film. I also thought the music was well suited to the video. All the best to you, and any production helpers. Good job, and thank you, David S.
Love the music, and thank you for the recommendations!
I love your videos so much! It’s been so informative and I’m purchasing a camera now !
Good shit bruh, channel growing fast!
MrAmitozGlitcher lmao! Thanks Brodie, I remember when you were hella active on yours haha yours blew up!
Great list! Definitely some of my favs on there! HP5 is my fav for daily shooting, but I agree the fine grain t-structure of tmax 400 is absolutely gorgeous! Ive pushed it to 6400 before and the grain still remains super fine and minimal! Another bnw that I absolutely love but is nearly impossible to find these days is tmax 3200. Its my all time fav bnw! The grain is overwhelming to some people, but I cant get enough of it. Another great video my friend! You're crushin it!
Nick Exposed Thanks nick! And I've never pushed any film past 1600 so 6400 for tmax and it's still fine grain is crazy!!
For the Dutch people, Go to Kruidvat for the AGFA Vista 400 and for the Fujicolor superia 200 go to Hema.
Yes! Or CameraNU. 5 Fuji Sup 200 for 19,95
THANK YOU!
Dank je wel!!!
THAAAANK YOU!!!
timbosch7 For the Dutch people...
Whahaha, dan kunt u toch ook prima Nederlands typen. 😁
amazing video! just recently bought a canon EMF 35mm camera as im going to NYC and want to get some retro-style photos!! cant wait to use these films
What's up King J? Great film review bro. Keep representing
omg I love the last two!!! Great video
Thanks for this. I'm just getting into film and had no idea where to start. I like saturated colours, so I need to try out AGFA Vista. Never really shot much black and white at all but that Ilford film makes me want to give it a go - it looks fantastic.
my dude! I've just started shooting film, your vids have been so helpful 🙏🏾 thank you
Gideon viti no worries Brodie!!!!!!
Your now my fave film photog plus you explain it very well! ☺
I got some of these in the drawer to try them out later. Of the selection you talked about I shot with Ilford HP5 400, I loved it! One good B/W film is also Tri-X 400. Currently shooting with TMAX 400 so I'm curious to see how that looks.
I absolutely seem to dislike Fujifilm Superia 200. I don't like the colours at all... but maybe I'm just more into black and white than colour. I do have a roll of Portra 400 to try out. Love the colours in that one, can't wait to shoot some photos with it.
Loving the vids, keep it up! :)
Love this dude’s channel!
Love your videos bro!
The Agfa looks interesting, thanks for the info.
Enjoyed this video a lot! Thank you!
Dope. Gonna have to give some of these a try!
Johnny Vayavong definitely!
From what i read from the internet, Agfa Vista also made by Fujifilm, so it's almost the same as the Fujifilm 200 Superia 200/400. It would be nice if you add a little more time while the shows picture of each film. Nice video by the way! Keep it coming KingJvpes!
Maulana Subono it very much could be! Haha wouldn't be surprised they produce similar results! Also thank you so much! I'll definitely be creating more :)
Whao! The FUJI SUPERIA 200 give very good results, amazing! Thanks for the video!
Love T-Max! Really like the new ISO 3200 too. Looks great.
dope video gunna try all these out!
very useful video and great shots too. Just found some Portra 400 online for a steal too!
Great video will for sure try out these films!!
Shooby Flores do it Brodie!!!
I've just been dipping my toe into this and I'm actually quite surprised that there are still so many types of film still being made. I grew up with film camera but with the rise and basic blanket domination of the market by digital cameras I thought almost all film production had dried up. Glad that it hasn't, I was think of getting my uncle's old camera out and getting some film to see if it still works so thanks for the suggestions.
Thank you Fella excellent video
My go-to c41 is Portra 400 and then I always push it to ISO800 and expose for the shadows. Amazing grain and highlights.
I've been shooting film for years and I have to agree with you on T-Max! It's actually a great film for portraits and other specialized scenarios. My main B&W film has been Ilford FP4 forever due to the very fine grain. I do like HP5 as well though. For color, the Portra series is fantastic for portraits! Superia has been a mainstay in my bag forever as has Velvia, now in ISO 100. I've even played a lot with Provia. All great films! Great video!
John Wilkinson Wow it seems like everyone shoots hp4! I'll definitely have to pick up a couple rolls haha, and thanks for sharing really appreciate it!! As for the Tmax, such a good film, it's a shame many people overlook it! Haha Thanks again for the support!! :)
Beautiful photographs!
Damn yes! Hahha I'm not sure what to buy 35mm film cause I'm a bit picky. Also it's nice that you include the sample photos. :))
Great video as always. I want to try all of this films.
Pedro Luis Castillo thanks pedro!!
Thats funny, except the tmax i had em all also, i agree totally, the C200 and the vista are awesome ! My fave B/W is Delta400, its just a perfect Allround-Film, nice smooth look and easy to push if necessary. If you have to chance to get it, you should try the Kodak Ultramax 400, thats one my fave C41-Films
Great videos. Great inspiration.
Give Cinestill 800t or 50D a try.
Or you can check out Film Photography Projects "Retrochrome" film.
FYI: B&H sells AGFA Vista 200 and 400.
will definitely try these out good shit fam
Diego C yeeee!! That's what we do!
Have you tried Agfa APX 100/400 b+w film? It's a great film and works very well with a yellow filter.
Coincidentally, these are about the only five types of film you can even find these days 😀. I haven't shot enough film yet to develop an opinion, but I'm open to trying anything.
Dave Oplinger lol pretty much man! Haha
Dave Oplinger Not true. I think they're the most common if anything. There are various films out there, you just gotta look. Cinematic film, infared, slidefilm, etc. There are some companies resurrecting older films as well.
Mera Mera would love to see Fuji chrome
Really awesome and useful video! I have a Canon AV-1 film camera with a 50mm lens but I'm confused because all I see online is 35mm film and I was wondering, is the film you use different for different lenses?
2 years later and a roll of Portra 400 now goes for $17
Dang, I just bought a single roll for 15. A 5-pack for about 9$ a piece
Here in italy 14$ a piece for a 5-pack. A single roll goes for 20 bucks
Cool video. I love Superia 200, but if I would recommend something to try it would be Fomapan made by Foma. Its available in 100, 200 and 400 ISO in 35mm and 120roll film. It is a film made in the Czech Republic established in 1921, it is cheap in price but good quality.
Nice list...good job
That Vista 400 is fire🔥
Agfa Vista is going away i think. Poundland has now stopped stocking them :( It was a great film for testing cameras for me since it cost only £1 (just over $1) each. Sad times. Sad times.
I just heard that recently as well. That is super sad! I havent even had a chance to try it yet. My heart breaks anytime a film stock is discontinued.
Old Cameras I just got some at B&H.
Agfa Vista is not being discontinued. Poundland has a made a decision not to carry it anymore because the supplier has put up the price. It is still being sold by all major camera retailers and will continue to be sold. As long as Fuji is making film, Agfa Vista will be a thing since it is 100% Fuji Color 200 (not Superia).
Depends on the format and amount of shots. In Canada, a roll of 36 exposures can cost you about $6-$10 per roll for consumer films and about $15-$20 per roll for premium films like Portra, or 400H. Medium format is usually around $10 per roll, again, it depends on the film stock you are buying. Then you have the cost of processing and scanning if you can't do it yourself.
I was privileged enough to be able to use agfa vista. I know a few people that still sell em. Mostly expired ones.
I love my TMax 400. Not sure why so many people are hating on that film.
Joe Castillo it's overlooked because of tri x, pancro etc...
Tmax 400 is seriously one of the most gorgeous black and white films. The grain, sharpness and contrast are perfect for so many scenes!!
And you can push it to 6400 EASY in medium format!
Tyler Wright yes yes yes! Good seeing you here on the tube buddy
I'm always lurking!
You can get fresh Fuji ProPlusII 200 on Amazon (often sold by Mel Pierce Camera). May be same as Superia 200. Not sure. Also green and awesome.
Rediscover Film Lol "also green and awesome" I'll definitely check it out! Thanks for the tips! And I've never ordered from b&h so maybe this will be a first
Nice channel!!! Those images are tack sharp!!! Which scanner are you using? Would you recommend me a canon 9000f mk2? Thanks in advance!!!
would've loved to have seen a more "portrait" TMax 400 B&W Portrait example. love your content.
Love it this video
Hello there. Over the last year Kodak Gold to me was the best choice. And the Agfa APX 100 for black and white. Greetings, DaBerni.
I'm new on this analog camera thing. And i wanna ask u something, what film that u prefer to a street night shooting? Thanks
ima use that fuji one!!
Vista roll look really nice..
awsome vid !
My absolute favorite film is tri-x 400 not for any particular reason but its what i use alot and its what i think of as black and white.
great video. check out Acros, rich black, contrasty, gorgeous for night shooting. super fine grain, smooth.
Great vid. Love Ilford FP4 and Superia. I've moved more toward Ektar and Kentmere 100. Kentmere is really versatile and ,if you start self-developing, pushes really well all the way to 800. I still use FP4 for my Bronica. I like AGFA, but being in the US, it makes more sense to just get Kodak Gold 200. Its more or less similar and a few cents cheaper.
Bryan Rollins Hey Bryan! And I agree with you on that Kodak plus haha, as for the fp4 I need to try it soon :/ and where can I pick up some kentmere?
KingJvpes B&H and Adorama have the best prices on Kentmere. Never seen it in stores, but where i live, you can only find overpriced Superia 400 anyway.
Bryan Rollins 😂😂😂
Nice choices 😊 I shot ilford FP4+ for the first time this weekend, really liking the results. My favourite black & white is Fuji Acros 100, amazing 😍 but colour your can not beat Kodak Portra 👍
I have yet to try out fp4 or across 100! How do they compare to hp5? And for color, i agree portra all the way!!!
Guess it depends what you want and how you scan them, but Acros is really silky smooth with amazing tones. I have only shot 1 roll of FP4+, but have some in my Nikon FM2n and in the Pentax 6x7 to test
Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life doesn't your 67 have a Polaroid back? How is that thing anyway?!
I have 2 Pentax 6x7's 😊 one with and one without the Polaroid back. Just think I've figured out how to shoot it to expose the Polaroid, as the 6x7 won't normally work without film in it 😔 It is unbelievably beautiful, especially for portraits 😍
Great Video. I too really like Tmax 400 (and 100) but Trix is still my No1 B&W film You are a talented photographer by the way. i am also a fan of Fuji Provia 100F. It is an E6 slide film and has beautiful colours.
Oz Baz thanks so much man! I appreciate it! Haha also I m with you man tri x is the king but yea tmax is fun to shoot
Ilford FP4+ is my current fav as far as medium speed B&W is concerned, but when more speed is needed I agree with you on TMax 400. I never liked Tri-X, but that is because of the grain. As far as color saturation goes.......Velvia is the maximum, 50 or 100. But since it's slide film, your exposure needs to be dead on.
I always either used Kodak or Fujifilm. I didn't know there was other types of brand if film! Good thing I just got my Canon A-1, so I'll have time to experiment :D
how you finding your canon a 1 so far?
What's ur opinion on the Canon bf-10 point and shoot camera? And what film should I pare it with so I can start out in film photography?
I’m relatively new to film photography, and I’ve just been shooting Ilford B&W film so far- but I’ve bought some Kodak ColorPro, is it any good?
I shot some Superia 200 the other day not knowing what to expect but it looks exactly like what I want out of it. I've been trying out lower-end stocks since it's more accessible in my area and to be honest, I feel that you could achieve any look you want with the lower end films if you have the retouching skills. I was shooting Portra 160 and 400 for a while but for the price of one roll of Portra 400 I've been getting 4 rolls of Superia X-Tra 400 which seems to still purvey the same kind of grain that I'm looking for.
ki - superia is my absolute favorite :)
Cool vid bro. I might need to try out black and white. Everybody talks about Ilford. Do you develop it yourself?
Warren Inge Ilford is popular for their hp5 and fp4 very good black and white films and I've done a couple rolls of black and white at a university darkroom haha
Yes, as you mentioned, Agfa 200 is available from Poundland :) It was discontinued for a while and then brought back recently due to the film craze at the moment.
Agfa folded :'(
those pictures are beautiful. May I ask what Camera/Lens did you use? Or what Camera/Lens would you recommend for shooting 35mm Film?
Does it really matter the film camera you use or is it the film itslef that really does all the work?
The film itself and the lens are the two biggest factors. All manual film cameras are basically just a box with a shutter. The lens and film are the main parts of the image.
how did you digitize your photos, did you scan the film or the printed photos? if you scanned the film, can you please tell me what scanner you used. thanks!
0:52 - did you overexpose it by putting the setting to ISO100 maybe? :) looks fire!
good video again my friend 😁 also... FIRST
lmao FIRST! You even beat me to it haha! Thanks again my dude, glad you liked it :)
I would say I photography mostly with these Pro film names like you mentioned in your Vlog... Kodak: Portra 160, 400, 800 Ektar 100 FujiFilm 400H, Superia 200 & 400 are my go to films I shoot a lot of. CineStill 800T is another favorite look I enjoy shooting when I get my hands on it, but for the most part... I tend to shoot FujiFilm 35mm commercial grade film for testing out my lenses and camera bodies I have or purchase presently. Great job King! :)
fotosbylang thank you! And I want some 400h haha how does it compare to portra?
It's a love hate relationship! Hahaha Love the color tones & hate the cost of it! So expensive! Like the CineStill 800T Great color tones for tungsten lighting and cool look! Loe the look! But I will shoot Kodak Portra 400 and 160 most of the time if I have it in stock. FujiFilm is cheap and I use it just to practice for my lens and body testing and I will go with both 200-400 ASA.
KingJvpes Yes colour film is a colour film but with black& white films it doesn't have to be that way. Do u develop your films yourself or are you developing it in a specialised store? Course brand of developer can have tremendous impact on the final film's output, heck even a degree of temperature up or down can have an impact...
Good lighting on you, but I think you should get a backdrop IMO. Even some blank paper, I'm sure you could build something. Looking at a kitchen isn't the best thing, and I have a feeling you're only there because that's the best light (good idea).
Does Fujifilm C200 pushed 1 or 2 stops good or will it get color shifts?
afga vista OMG is the best cheap film ive ever used :) but i love HP5 i used it for my trip in London and it was great
Hey I have a minolta xg-a and trigger wont move all the way put batteries in it couldn't get it move or work anyone know how to fix this
Those pictures you shot with the Fuji 200 were they at the Sacramento State Capital
Just a general question, I shot film for the first time and im suprized how noizy and grainy my pictures are. Is it allways like that or does it depend on the developer and scanner used?
Yooo you were in Sacramento?? Like I KNOW that train station at 0:58!
Does portra 400 do well with flash photography at night ?
King, Fujicolor made the Agfa film Vista, and the CT slide, and to say that they stop making back in 2015 so it is discontinued when Sold Out, I would of know this because I work at a camera store for 33 years. And I miss Neopan 400, and 1600, and Kodak Ultracolor400, and Ekapress 400, and 800.
Have you ever used ilford hp2 or any other variations of ilford film
The Agfa Vista is nice. HP-5 shouldn't be too contrasty, but certain developing firms will develop it improperly.
Just curious, why do you shoot film? Do you scan the negatives? If you scan the negatives are there benefits of film that justify the cost and time involved?
where can i buy portra 400 what are some recommended sites
to be fair I have shot most of them films except for tmax but if you giving it a recommendation ill have to give it a go
ayeeeeee Berkeley!
Hey King think you could make a video on tips for a photoshoot? I got my first shoot with my friends band coming up soon. Taking photos is the easy part, bur I have trouble figuring out how I want my models posed. They always tell me "you decide you're the photographer lol"
Emeka Ndubueze that's a good topic, fortunetly I have shot and filmed a portrait shoot video and it will be coming out soon, I didn't go into how to pose a model but you'll get the general concept. I say go look at something that's related to the theme of the shoot and look online for inspiration. There's tons out there! Also if you have instagram there's that too :)
I love the colours on Agfa! Have you tried shooting Kodak Color Plus? I discovered this film in Asia and the colours are really nice as well, reminds me a bit of Agfa!
Probably my favourite film! Love its colors! I shoot lots of flowers with it, and it always reminds me of the pictures from some old biology textbook!
And really cheap too!
Here in Toronto, stores sell Agfa vista 400 so I will definitely give them a try. However, atm I am yet finish and develop a roll of kentmere 400 ( B and W) you should try it and give a review about it.
Ralph Cedric Basco I might! Haha I'll look into the kentmere
I like the Land's end photo. you from the bay?
Tmax 400 is my go to 120 black and white. I really dislike the intense HP5 and Tri-X look. Trying out Ilford's Delta 100 soon as a possible replacement however.
I just got a film camera the other day and am really confused about shutter speed. What shutter speed do I use if I'm shooting landscapes and other things that are not in motion because I don't want the blur background like in a portrait. Also which shutter speed setting do I use for close up portraits? Thanks!
Natalie Mazar what makes the blurred background is the aperture you choose and not the shutter speed. If you don't want this bokeh effect then you will need to select a slower aperture, something like 8 or 11. What that also means is that you will need to use a slower shutter speed because the slower aperture will let less light in. Could you tell me something about the camera you have? Is it a full on manual camera or what do you have?
mad ...thx fam
Do you know any way to take pics that have those nice 70s colors?
As this is an older video and you probably improved, but I haven't watched any of your newer videos, but I just wanted to let you know that I think people would prefer if you lowered the music a little bit when you are talking :) It's a little bit too loud and unclear to hear you, and it would also be helpful if the pictures didn't skip so quickly. Nice video though.
what do you think of cinestil 800?
