      Too true. The one-stop push for shooting expired film is one those "rules" popularized on YT which as no known basis in fact, but gets repeated forever. For slide film, never. For color negative film, why not as the film sucks up a 2-3 stop overexposure. For B&W: stored frozen, no need; stored cold, probably not up to 5 years, stored in your car glove box, toss it.

      KingJypes I have no problem using expired films, being a b/w user mainly it does not suffer from problems with dyes; I am still using some FP4 expired in 1997. The oldest material that was shown to be good was a packet of Lumiere Sigma plates, 80 years past use-by date...
      By the way I also use Cosina-Voigtländers: Bessa-R, R2, and Bessaflex TM Black.

    Hey man, try loading the film strip into the winding reel before you load the canister. It will allow you to align the perforations with the teeth easier and then when you pull the canister across (from right to left) the film will be taught, and you won’t have to wind back to pull it taught.

    Thanks for the advice on expired film. But I always buy fresh film. Sometimes, I process my film over a year later but I managed to keep them refrigerated so they can be processed later. I do have some expired Kodak Color Plus 200 film and I did shoot it at box speed and everything looks fine. You should tell your viewers about the importance on protecting from XRAY scans at the airport. Kodak has an article about film going through XRAY scans at the airport. During your shoot when the sun is facing the back of the person or when in low light areas, it is good to use a speedlight. I would recommend trying out Lumiquest Big Bounce for your speedlight. Another advice is to shoot with the speedlight off the camera. You can do this by using a speedlight bracket and a TTL cables for your speedlight. This setup would soften the shadow on your subject so there won’t be hard shadows from the hard light. Peace, Flood!

  • @ManuelGuzmanPhotography
    @ManuelGuzmanPhotography 6 років тому

    If it was cold stored, you're probably not going to have to worry about over-exposing for film that's only been expired two years (though as you said we're always over-exposing anyways). Anything beyond a decade, though, you'll have to watch for color-shifts in the film and correct in LR/PS. BW film is usually more forgiving, too, and slide film - after my own experimenting - REALLY depends on storage since there is no compensating for loss of sensitivity there.

  • @bk-vh8dp
    @bk-vh8dp 6 років тому +1

    hey KingJvpes, I have another question. I always get confused when it comes to overexposing film. Isn't that the same thing as pushing film? Why should I set my ISO to half the box speed if the developers are just going to develop the film like the ISO is not sensitive. For example, if the box speed is 400 and I want to over expose by one stop doesn't that mean I tell the developers to process it like it's 800 film? If so, why not keep my ISO at 400? I know this is probably something simple but I keep tripping over this logic. I sense that the only reason this logic is taken is if you have a light meter. Do these rules apply if you don't have a light meter?

      sean malvaroza he said that if the film has been expired for 2-5 years then only lower it by one stop. Your film is within that range so if you’re shooting 200, then use the 100 setting on your camera. 200 iso film should only go to the 50 setting on your camera if it’s been expired for more than 5 years old, then you over expose by two stops

    What do I do if I don't know how old the film is? Should I overexpose 2 stops? Idk how old most of my film is because it was sold without a box

    Most dx coded cameras have a default with uncoded film of iso 100.
    So buy uncoded 100 iso film and you will be fine

    I have a film expired in 2003, it’s a iso 100 so I have to shoot it at iso25? Can i change the iso on my camera while I’m shooting the same film? I mean shooting the first let’s say 10 photos with a 50 iso set and then the last 26 shoots bringing it down to iso 25. Can I do that? Thanks

      If your camera has a stop compensation function, dial it up by the number of stops required 🙂

    Those are the results for expired Kodak Gold 400? The colors are very odd... do you have a certain tone profile with your lab or do you edit your film scans for the grungy/washy look?
    I rated a roll of expired Kodak gold 400 at box speed and just pushed 1 stop in development. The colors were a lot more neutral and life like compared to yours, but with more contrast.
