Driving School Dropout... Sink, Sank, Sunk...

- Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!!! Today, we have a customer with a "sinking feeling" of failure. A local driving school is training some drivers for their CDL test when they find some unfriendly ground conditions. The truck is only hauling an empty trailer, yet sinks the drive axles down to "wheel depth" in fresh, soft gravel and dirt. They are in a bit of a rush, because one of the students has an appointment to take their CDL exam shortly. Our flagship, Peterbilt 389X with a Miller Industries, Century 1150R Rotator heavy towing and recovery unit makes quick work of this one!!! I hope you enjoy this video!!!
We have a difficult and dangerous job and we take it very seriously, that doesn't mean we can't have fun and enjoy our work. We strive to be polite, professional, efficient, and safe...and still can have fun. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

My common analogy, "there are many ways to reach 10". I could have approached this (any) job several different ways. The approach method is important, but more important is achieving the desired result, safely.
Again, a very special thank you to all my viewers, family, and friends who having taken the time to show their support. May God bless and protect you all!!!

The students have learned two lessons, one check the ground to see if it is safe, two see an actual recovery. And the cost of getting the truck out.
I suppose you are correct. Thanks for watching and God bless.
And another lesson, when your stuck, how to work with the tow truck operator, the process and paperwork that can go along with the task, great video thumbs up
Great video ,watching from the Isle of Wight,U.K. May God keep you safe in your endeavours!
@RonPrat if you and tator got stuck would the western star be able to pull you out?
It's nice to see that they were smart enough to stop and get a tow instead of digging down to the pumpkin and risk tearing something up
I completely agree. All too often newer drivers get embarrassed or fearful for their jobs and make matters worse. Thank you for watching and God bless.
It's like that old saying: When you are in a hole, stop digging.
@@excavatoreeunless your job is to dig that hole! Like a gravedigger or such…
It's nice to see a simple, straight forward job every so often.
Thank you, I appreciate the kind comment. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Ron, even the seasoned drivers have trouble with finding firm solid ground when the weather doesn't cooperate.
You are correct. Everyone makes mistakes. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Ron, thank you for sharing Aaron's post. There were multiple miracles in his story. He survived Covid and he got a donation from his fellow employees that exactly matched what his pay would have been for the time he was off. I'm glad I didn't cut out of this video before the very end or I would have missed this story. Again, thanks for sharing it.
I cannot begin to share how many stories really touched us. Well, honestly ALL of them touched our hearts. Lots of viewer gratefulness to share for a long time to come. Thank you for sticking with it until the end. God bless.
Getting stuck in loose gravel must be taught in that school lol. They was lucky have you there for the rescue Ron. God Bless you too my friend.
Not sure if it is taught, but it has potential to be a repeat area. Thank you for watching and God bless.
I am sure you may be planning but good opportunity to go to this school and talk about how to work with tow operators especially on the interstate. Some dues and don't. More importantly a good slow down move over lecture. Just my 2 cents
Great video Ron my trainer always taught me to check unfamiliar drop yards before driving in
That's always the best plan. Sounds as if you have a good trainer. God bless and thank you for watching.
It's not always possible or practical to do that though. Sometimes you just have to hope it works out ok😊
Perfect way to start my Friday morning... Midwest truck, and a cup of coffee ❤✝️🫡🇺🇸
Thank you for sharing the time with us. Thank you for watching and God bless.
That was pretty straightforward, Ron. Hope the trainee driver got through their CDL exam, though you might not get to hear the result. God bless. Greetings from the UK.
I hope so too. Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt we all passed our cdl test !
You mean the 2 & 1/2 hour CDL Road Test Examination? I hope so too, especially with flying colors!!
No harm no fowl... Good actual live learning experience for the new driver. Good quick recovery too Ron... Thanks for sharing...!
You got that right! Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt Thank you so much for replying back to me Ron...! This might sound corny, but You have no idea what this means to me when you do...! How you are with people and how helpful you are is such an admirable trait you have that others should follow instead of being mean or hurtful... Thank you for being who you are...!
I appreciate that very much. I don't have much time anymore to respond like I would like to. Once in a while I am able to sit down and comment. Understand though, even when I don't respond...I have read every comment left on the page. You all are important to me and I am so blessed to have such support. Thanks again.
@RonPratt I totally understand you Ron are an extremely busy person and rightfully so, considering you are the man and awesome person you are! That's why you're so busy! It's very hard to find an excellent quality working business man like yourself and crew. That's why I feel so honored to have an individual like yourself, take the precious time to do exactly what you just did...! Love you man...!!!

That was a quick down and dirty tow this time. Easy peassy.
Yep, short and sweet this morning. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Quick and easy to start the day. STAY SAFE OUT THERE
Yep, those are nice now and then. Thank you for watching and God bless.
I got my pickup truck stuck in my yard the other year. I was delivering feed to the barn. Drove that stretch many times before. This time it was the morning after a big storm rolled through the night before. Dropped the f350 to both axles.
A good rain can make an area that you drive on when its dry just complete much.
Sorry to hear that. It is so easy to do. There has been a lot of work in this area and building sites. I'm sure it will settle, but unfortunate for the student. Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt I got complacent because I had done it a lot before.
My guess is that the driving school had used that lot before with little to no problems. They got complacent and did think that they would have a problem.
I love that when you arrive on site there is never any blame. It is always "it happens to everyone at least once, now let's get it out".
And sometimes when you have driven the same route a million times you miss that little change and it happens.
@@keithmalmberg8395there's always blame somewhere. Sometimes it just isn't publicly visible. Lol.😂
I moved a lot of equipment for the last company I worked for before retirement and I can't tell you how many times I've had people tell me I could pull into places like that and then they would tell me I just took my pickup through there
Some just don't understand how heavy trucks are. Happy retirement. Thank you for watching and God bless.
i say iam surprise the trucking school instructor evan having a class on such a wet day. knowing the gravel that soft.

still a valuable lesson for any Driving Student .. Stop & call for re-inforcements ..don't just keep digging yourself into a deeper hole
100% agree with you. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Hey Ron .. love the videos , I watch every Friday. Forgive me if you’ve discussed this already, but I’ve noticed your videos have gotten a lot shorter than what they’ve been in the past . Have you changed up the way you are presenting the content or just a coincidence that there haven’t been any lengthy wrecks to deal with ? I just really enjoyed the full length videos … keep up the good work either way
If I am to be honest, sometimes it is the luck of the draw with the jobs and other times it is time constraints for me. This week was DEFINITELY a time constraint. Ethan and I (along with some of the others), have been working 15 hour days, plus being on call during this time as well. This is one of our busiest times of the year with school districts and hauling cars for a Monster Truck show locally. Unfortunately, I have also achieved another probable flu diagnosis. Fever, aches and sore throat. Just got over covid, bronchitis and a version of the flu over Christmas. So far the last couple of months have kicked my butt. Thanks for watching and God bless.
@@RonPrattoh my…you’re having a streak of bad luck in illnesses! Hopefully you get better soon as your job isn’t one that can be done remotely!
@@RonPratt thank you for responding and feel better. Be safe out there as well
I wish I was that busy. Maybe i need to move over there to work. Lol.😂
Hopefully we get a video of some sort of the monster trucks, or rather the flattened cars 😁
Good Lord that is nerve wrecking for the student... I remember getting my CDL, on that day I too nearly got stuck which would have cancelled the exam and you get to get re-nervous on the redo-day... I hope he passed!!! If your instructor tells you "go in there", you got to do it... if they then make you fail..? Have mercy on his soul.... GBU Ron!
I would agree, not much of an ego builder to get stuck early on. We all make mistakes. Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt Everybody with a CDL will get stuck at one point! All drivers that say they won't are liars. That's the same here in Europe, and the Lord Almighty knows towers overhere import a lot of rotators because of misjudgement or stupid drivers LOLOLOL... Thank you for responding, I appreciate that!
At least they weren’t bogged down with a full load!! Creating a parking lot by just putting down stones on top of a field, maybe cheap , but doesn’t work too well when it rains!! Fortunately, Ron was on hand. Stay safe, Ron. Best Wishes Roy W UK
Love your Easter wreath 😂😂😂
On a serious note love you videos Keep up the good good work.
Thank you so much!! Happy NewYearsMasTines Day. LOL God bless
ENJOYED WATCHING THE VIDEO RON 😊
So glad you are enjoying the channel. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Heck of a place for a learner to find out that the ground isn't solid enough for a semi truck, that's almost as bad as the sugar sand holes down in Palm Beach county Florida, (I found one in 1983, I found what looked like solid ground and needed to turn around so in I went, straight down to the axles, had to call for a heavy wrecker, yeah, I found out why that land was vacant lol
I agree, it's a shame, but live and learn. No one was injured so it was a good day still. I definitely would not wish to find a sand hole. God bless and thank you for watching.
I've been watching you for years. Great job. Thanks for sharing. Be safe .till next video 👍
Thanks, will do! Glad you enjoy the channel. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Another awesome job recovering a minor mistake, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! God bless.
You were definitely wise not to pull in too far. Good work Ron. 👍❤️
Two stuck trucks wouldn't be any fun at all. LOL Thank you for watching and God bless.
Getting stuck in soft gravel is not good i hope it taught them a lesson to always check the grounds to see how soft it is. Ron did a very good job of pulling it out keep safe and God bless 👍👍👍
I agree, lessons were learned. It isn't always easy to detect when the ground is soft, so a quick check is always best. Thank you for watching and God bless.
About as easy a recovery as you can have! Good video Ron.
The three loads of corn (beans?) that passed while you waited for the light to change made me a little homesick.

Another perfect recovery! Eazy Peazy!
I know that instructor. He came to MCT at Park Hills for a little while, he helped me on my 90 degree back. The only time I was successful at it with no help was with his instruction
😂 There was a lot of good lessons in this video. Mostly for the students.! But a very good way to learn about the true nature of the world of trucking!❤❤
I was half expecting the Mixer to sink and then you'd have a double header.
That would've been fun. We love double headers, as long as we are one of the sinkers. LOL Thank you for watching and God bless.
When I got my Class B CDL, the cost was $50 (some states charge as much as $200). My employer paid the fee BUT if I missed the test or failed, the fee to re-take was on me. For someone living paycheck to paycheck at the time, $50 out of my pocket would've been devastating. No pressure, eh. WTG, Ron!
Great reference to Grease.
Thank you, thank you very much. God bless and thank you for watching.
Student has already been hired by Swift.
Be nice. LOL Thank you for watching and God bless.
In such circumstances where the ground is a bit loose, would it ever be advantageous to drop the tri axle, or does the loss of weight on the other tyres always outweigh further distribution?
I think it's time to clean up these top boxes..😊
Yes, they really need it. Thanks for watching and God bless.
I put a crush and run parking pad next to my driveway. After it was done I promptly got my sedan stuck in it because it sank down. It's fine now--it just takes a while for the clay under to dry out enough and to get enough crush and run mixed in with the dirt so the water flows off of it more than soaking in. It works over time, but definitely not an instant solution.
That sounds like a brilliant idea. Thanks for watching and God bless.
I love your videos

Same to you! Thanks so much. God bless and thank you for watching.
Last spring i had a guy deliver a load of firewood and told him not to pull into my yard..he did and sank the truck and trailer loaded full of wood hard.. had to hand unload the wood then used my 1ton wrecker and my 3/4 ton trailer hauler and got him out.. took awhile but the dude learnt a lesson on rigging and recovery
That was a pain for both of you then. It can happen to anyone in a split second. Thanks for watching and God bless.
The first and only time ive operated a big truck was an LTL 9000 ford with beavertail float. The boss wasnt around and i finished scarifying a cut block, next one was too far to walk back if i run the 46000 lb skidder to it so i decided to teach myself how to drive truck, had to back up a long ways to find a spot to turn around then the scary part of climbing the beavertail with the skidder, only about 6" of tire on each side of the beavertail. i got it done safe and sound.
Christmas is over Ron 😂

Hi Ron, sorry to hear you are sick again. The long hours will do it every time. Prayers for you, family and employees as you do what has to be done. Many years ago l worked for a company hauling bulk cement. Went to a job where they were making streets for a new subdivision. They wanted me to back down this one area. No problem, except the grader smoothing the area was sinking nearly 18 inches. I was grossing 84,000 pounds so knew what would happen. Told the foreman he would have to call my boss to get instructions on pushing the truck out of the mud. Dude could not understand at my weight, l was going down like the Titanic. Finally sent me to another street that was solid.
Oh my.....did you sing the song from the Titanic as you went down??? LOL Sorry, I couldn't resist. Glad you got out of there without any injury. As I responded to another viewer, things can go south very quickly. Thanks for watching and God bless.
No, did not have to sing the song. I refused to back into the area, as l would have been fired if l had done so knowing l would get stuck.
Get the new driver introduced to getting towed out. It may be a long-term relationship !
For their sake, I hope not. It was an easy fix though. Thank you for watching and God bless.
That’s about as simple as they come.
You should have put that title to the Grease song Beautyschool Dropout. Just imagine if someone sung it.
Something similar happened when my stepfather was teaching me to drive his stick shift Chevette. He told me to drive into a field...and we sank up to the axles. I had to climb up to get out of the car. Friends of ours were able to pull it out.
And I still can't drive a manual... 😂
I remember the Chevettes and the Vegas!!!! My wife learned to drive a stick in a Chevette. It was sort of like a roller skate with a cabin LOL. Thanks for watching and God bless.

Now his business is closed and their name is Affordable towing. The fire department has been called there several times because people are setting the junk cars on fire.
We are very cautious in these things. We have been approached to engage in this and will not for any reason. Even when laws/rules are not popular, they are there for a reason. We don't have to agree, but we are obligated to follow them. I wouldn't risk the livelihood of our family and those who depend on us as employees, to do something illegal.
