It's amazing how much laundry one can get done while listening to something fun. That said, I adore audiobooks too, and Sir Terry is amazing! I actually had the idea going through my head to make the hubby into Rincewind while I played Twoflower at Comic Expo one year. if you want someone to talk fountain pens with, you need to meet my hubby. He's been into them for years and has quite the collection. I agree with the "dream project" thing being rather underwhelming and overused. Taking the little wins is much more satisfying. I think your reveals are great. They show off the projects well and how wonderful you look in them. Thankss for giving us a little peek into some of your ideas. Take care.
You make me think that if we were more inclined to go to Expo, a Vimes and Sybil costume would be necessary 😁 Something tells me there are a lot of transferable hobbies between us 😉
Perfect to listen to/semi watch whilst embroidering away on a simple design. Drooled at the embroidery that you are doing. Took screenshot of embroidery and spent a couple of hours trying to find it. Eventually did and its now sat in my basket waiting for me to purchase. Along with another dozen simple designs I found while hunting for the moth. Really should be weaving belts, but its too hot (25 deg C) to be playing with wool. And tomorrow is going to be worse. Not used to hot in northern england.
Whoops! I forgot to add it to the description! Will do so once I get near my computer. In the meantime (for anyone else interested), it's the Moon Moth embroidery pattern by Bloom and Floss. I found it on Etsy 😃
I listened to this while I was pulling weeds, it was perfect. As a person who is interested in how things are done, I need to consciously refrain from acquiring any new hobbies. When people ask me about quilting, my reply is that I've learned that I like planning quilts and buying fabric for quilts but actually making quilts, not so much. I do the occasional patchwork type thing and I am thinking of making a crazy quilt someday.

I am currently sorting 15 containers of redcurrants into either ‘freeze for eating in winter’ and ‘making jelly’ so I needed this video. Redcurrant jam has too many seeds so not doing that this year 😊 Also GNU Sir Terry! You are the first person I have heard say they enjoy The Thursday Night Murder Club too, it is nice to find another one out there. Douglas Adams as well makes me think we have similar libraries. I also like some of the the Iain Banks books, Crow road in particular.
@@MaireColclough He wrote under two name. Iain banks is real world fiction with dark yet philosophical storylines with an occasional bit of murder in some or in the case of Complicity a lot of murder. They are a good commentary on society and the middle class/working class societal evolution of the time. His work matured as he did. The initial breakout book, The Wasp Factory, is actually not my favourite though many love it. Over 15 years ago I wrote my dissertation on him but then did not complete it to hand in due to a stroke like event which was probably early MS relapse. I ended up still getting my designated degree but it was very annoying. However, his Iain M Banks stuff is more sci-fi and not really to my taste though ymmv. Totally nothing wrong with a back up machine. Mine is my grandma's 1950s Kenmore. It's sentimental and only sorta works but it's mine! I haven't made my dream project because it's out of my budget and I didn't have anywhere to wear it. 😂 No point in working towards something that will just sit in the closet and fade. That is just sad. So it will remain a dream while I make more practical things like pants, dresses for church or a light weight jacket.
@@MaireColclough that's true I could make more pretty dreamy clothes. I've always been a jeans and t shirt kinda person and I struggle with super girly to me prints or colors. I should branch out more. I'm just wimpy about it.

I have to be honest I usually am interested in what people are reading as I'm trying to get ideas for something new to read - in my real life not many people discuss books or have time to read but I have a reading habit I refuse to see rehab for....Also my 14 year old also learned the lesson of asking what she could use out of my stash - she made her first circle skirt this year after a failed attempt at a bathing suit (lofty but I let her use the scuba and give it a go...she learned a lot and I got it back to use to make gloves for a costume for my son with....)
Hooray for the 14-year-old! And I think the last thing I bought with my Audible subscription was a bunch of Stephen King Holly Gibney books because someone mentioned it somewhere. Still need to get around to listening, 😐
I did a quick run down on Google Scholar this summer about essential oils as mosquito repellent, and for the potential crossover in moths I can recommend: Rosemary, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, citrus (citronella, bitter orange, lemon), pine, cedar, and geranium off the top of my head. It was found that using mixes of essential oil prolonged effectiveness, and so did adding vanilla/vanillin. Of course, I would look into moths particularly: I didn’t have the expertise to understand everything, but I can look up the scientific names of the stuff they said worked in the abstract (the paragraph at the beginning that summarizes everything AND isn’t behind a paywall)! The interesting thing I found was that one of the papers looked into disrupting the egg part of the lifecycle, which is probably my next year’s project to protect my woolens in the summer. This year I just wrapped them around a bunch of rosemary (because my mom said to) and put them in whatever container was handy. 😅
If you're specifically trying to keep out spiders peppermint works really well, we used to plant it outside of my sister windows because she has a phobia
I like doing swags of eucalyptus and lavender and rosemary. They're decorative and smelly. And can be shaped to suit. Stars, letters etc. Spiders don't like them. Your mini cauldron would look cute with a cushion top in a bubble pattern?
@@lornadavis476 The herb idea are fantastic. Beginning to think ye olde pin cauldron should become a slightly recessed pin cushion with herbal stuffing 😁
Hi, Maire! I, too, love the Discworld series, and Stephen King, those are my big two. Older Stephen Kings and Terry Pratchett's 'Pyramids' for sure. For something different, you might enjoy a book called "Penpal," by first time author Dathan Auerbach. Different, but very good as it straddles those true-crime/horror-fiction genres. I suggested it to Mr. Ballen, too, as it's (sort of) right up his alley. I'm not affiliated with either of those guys, but the book IS a good one. Currently reading "Bradbury Stories, 100..." and all I can say is pbbt. Maybe 2 (possibly 3) out of 5 can keep my interest long enough to finish the story. And to that, the Librarian says "Ooook." Hugs
My favorite sewing tool is my grommet machine. Why? I absolutely hate zippers! 😂 If I can lace it up, I do. At least I finally figured out buttonholes. Thank goodness for UA-cam. Ooh, I had a Kenmore once upon a time. My biggest regret is letting her go. I was too ignorant to know what a mistake that was. Now I haunt Facebook marketplace for a replacement. 158.47, with all the cams. God was I stupid!
I like the Atlantic provinces but I am quite biased since most of my experience of Canada has been here. I had a goal of getting to all ten provinces before becoming a Canadian citizen but fortunately that process has been a lot quicker than expected so I'm still missing Manitoba and Saskatchewan with not enough time left to get there. I suppose I'll have to find a new finish line for that one, and maybe add in the territories too (but the cash and time required needs to be mustered). I also dont feel right ticking off Newfoundland and Labrador as one province when I haven't made it to Labrador yet! If you come out this way I have lots of fibre-tourism recommendations :)
We have a lot of spiders in our home. Thankfully rarely dangerous to use but as long as they stay off the seats/bed and don’t bite us we leave ‘em be. Chair caning is time consuming (lot of waiting for the cane to soften in water) but fun. I fixed a very messed up chair my mother in law gave us and I’m sitting on it now while listening to your video and ironing/cutting fabric for a UFO I want to finish after finding more of the fabric I needed.
The caning is beautiful - we have a set of chairs and a decorative ottoman(?) that we're treating as a set. But the unfinished chairs she never got around to caning can go elsewhere. You have my admiration for not only doing your own caning, but being cool with the creepy crawlies! 😁
Everybody says that about David Bowie. . . I come from a ballet background ( my mother was a professional ballerina and then a professional Flamenco dancer,) I never saw anything below his chest. Tudor or Italian renaissance would be very interesting. French or English hood? Also, used this to time dinner.
I asked a question on your Instagram story. I asked about where your name is from. Before I heard you say it I said it with the E on the end, in my head. It sounded like Mary. But you don't say it like that...
The short form of my full name is "Mer" (pronounced Mare or Mayr). A friend didn't like the simple 3-letter spelling, and started spelling it "Maire". My parents liked it, so it caught on. Technically, that spelling should be pronounced "May-ra". So either way, it's all wrong and I have an interesting, unique name 😉
I think it is fantastic how easily you mastered embroidery. the mushrooms and things you made on the black shirt you made was great. Envious.
It's practice and building on skills. I can tell the difference between the first motif and the last - and I can see all the mistakes 😁
My personal dream project for sewing is princess buttercup's red dress. My dream knitting project is a Victorian cycling sweater.
The cycling sweater is on my eventual list. 😃
