@@partytom4184 well idk what you consider "back together" but its just jesse and chad now with randoms. Been like that for a long time they just stopped touring for awhile.
I was absolutely obsessed with this band and I genuinely think Miller is one of the more underrated guitarists out there, such a fascinating and unique style
Classic for sure. I remember hearing my buddy play it in high school and despite never having heard the song before I was like "dude, you've got to teach me that riff right now."
This was the riff that got me into learning guitar and wanting to play in/front a band. One of the most underrated bands of the late 90s/early 2000s with a unique sound.
Man, I was 13 years old in 1999 so I can absolutely recognise my own teenage years in what you described. What a crazy time to be young! I still listen to the first 2 CKY records every few years. Such a great band and some very tasty riffs. Whenever I hear an OC2 or see someone playing a Parker Fly, I can’t help but think of CKY.
@@eirikstor yeah I bought it from Deron quite a few years ago. Got to sit down and jam with him for a few hours. Was really a surreal experience. That picture was from a guitar shop I brought to to tune it up. Puts all of my other guitars to shame.
As a 80s baby who grew up skating, and lived in Philly and VA between parents. These CKY tapes and the Big Brother and eventually Jackass stuff was just the backround noise and visualizations of my growing up years lol
This song slams though, first time I ever heard it was in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 or 3 Also for some reason, at one point my friend and I set “If You Must” as the only song that plays, and we would forget the next time we played, and it would just repeat. To us that was the funniest thing ever.
The catchiest riff ever written. CKY has some amazing songs for sure. Darron's Melo death band World Under Blood has some really awesome guitar work as well.
The octave pedal is the “secret” essential ingredient in making this sound like it does. Dunno why it just adds this vibe to the whole thing. Its a great riff
I saw CKY perform in college, they opened for Atreyu (there's a sentence I never thought it'd say). I don't remeber much, but I remember the lead singer was playing a Parker and just definitely playing lead lines while singing and I'm 100% sure he never looked at the fretboard.
@@TheIrishMugFugDude, yeah. As the Tables Turn, Boardwalk Body, She Never Returned, Rats in the Infirmary, Shock and Terror... All multitasking nightmares. Don't even get me started on the Foreign Objects material!
I knew it. I think it's so ingrained with jackass because it got popular alongside bam joining jackass and followed him as he branched out so it had multiple platforms that's its attached to
Funny to seed this pop up given I've been on a CKY kick. Miller has such sick riffs. Disengage The Simulator is another insane riff that has a weird bounce and swing to it.
I was kinda hoping it was Turbonegro's All My Friends Are Dead but considering I'm going to see the (new) CKY lineup this month, this was a great recommendation!
So my car just died and I had to get SOMETHING… so today I drove home from work in my new ‘02 Accord blasting this through the Kenwood with the aux cord. High school af
everything about this riff reminds me of early Billy Talent, which was similarly sub-culture defining for a similar type of Canadian teenager in the 2010s
Always dug that sound, in general. Something about using the octaver with those kinds of riffs just really cuts through. I know Derron is more into death metal and prog but because it's so riff-centric, it really is comfortable in a desert rock/stoner metal setting.
I'm Brazilian this riff resonates with me exactly the same way you described: 2000's, Bam Margera, Tony Hawks Pro Skater, playing my acqua blue strat with a Zoom 505 and a crappy amp.
I'm ashamed to say I'd first heard the song while in Iraq yearssss after it was out. Instant ear worm that I had to sit down and learn. Still one of my favorite riffs to warmup. with. Helps you get your muting in check and there's some awesome arpeggio practice slipped it.
I’ve always thought the brilliance of their music was inversely proportionate to the stupidity of the stunts in those videos…. You should do more cky riffs. The way they entangle melodies is phenomenal.
Yes!! I was born in 97. I remember seeing the music video on UA-cam when I was like 12 or so. I had started learning guitar a year earlier and was finally able to play this riff. Still love to play it all these years later, iconic
@LivingroomGearDemos great video but the mix of this video seems to be lacking a lot of low end that your videos normally have? Just wanted to note this in case you were unaware or if you are aware, please bring back the lows!
"The ultimate way of telling someone... OH! You were into dumb stuff 20 years ago, too." 💯💯💯💯💯😂 Perfectly said! LOL. Excellent breakdown on this tune. Thanks for your hardwork making this vid!
Deron and Chad were a brilliant writing duo. CKY band came out at the right and wrong time, in my opinion. It was right in line with Bam's videos and it catapulted the band into stardom, but if those songs were created and released with more of a social media presence, I think it would've been even bigger.
That bass line though!
primo stuff

I just came here to read someone talking about this fucking riff. It always gives me chills.

This song is blowing up again for some reason. I've seen it all over the place.
It's so sick.
I think it’s partially because polyphia covered it and a guy made a short on it that blew up pretty big
CkY got back together a few years ago and released a banger album and are touring again, so I assume that is part of it
The Dead South has a pretty cool version if you’re into folky stuff.

Honestly your recording is so good, and probably have more at your disposal than they did at the time. I would kill for a full cover.
Happy to see that Deron Miller is still getting recognition after so many years.

I was fortunate enough to catch them on the carver city tour. I was 15 and it was the first show i ever attended. My ears rang for 4 days straight
Derons current band is call 96 Bitter Beings. They sound like classic cKy
You ar emissing the gliss (quick slide into a note) on the 2nd to last note of the riff. It adds all the style and flare to this riff!

I would argue that you really need an analogue octaver and not a digital pitch shifter for the full effect but im sad like that.
