My second divorce took away a lifetime love of music, centered on the blues. One night at the foot of a small stage in Knoxville Tn, Roy gave it back to me. I muscled my way into the small room after the show and told him. He said "that's why I play". I am eternally grateful.
I would love to see Roy and Sonny Landreth jam together - two of our greatest living slide masters feeding off each other. Then throw in Ry Cooder for an encore.
Playing is great. I don't like the packaging. He invokes the masters and legends, but contemporizes the hell out of it. It's like traditional acoustic blues repackaged minus the soul, and add the classic rock audience chasing.
"How can anyone criticize...?" Couldn't agree more, Tramp. This man's a Master disciple of the genius, his Muse, Robert Johnson. At the risk of sounding like I'm criticizing, I do have a preference for a more natural tone, maybe with a bit of gritty gain, so, "Roy, please lose the chorus,...you too, Taj." -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Probably cuz retards wanna say he just mimics the old masters. To that I say, wrong, morons, he pays homage to them then FAR exceeds what those old timers even thought was possible
Many play on the guitar but this man actually plays the guitar. Wonderful music that is within an historical tradition but with endless variation. I am really impressed and believe me it takes a lot to impress me. Michael Arch
Roy is absolutely # 1 slide blues player in my book. He is sooo crazy good; unbelievable; and I've heard most of them. No one comes close to his rythm and the feeling with which he plays!
Saw Roy a few years back in Portland , that guy can play. Derrick Trucks, John Hammond, and a few other slide players in his league. His Terraplane Blues with John Lee Hooker is one of my favorites. Roy’s guitars are really interesting machines too
Jon dough, it's an interpretation of a song by Robert Johnson, a man who Roy has a great reverence and respect for. It's also a showcase of a gifted American contemporary blues musician. Muddy waters created R & R by plugging in and playing the blues electrified. Being a blues man myself I still get chills when I watch this video. And let's be completely honest here jon, how many people do you know who can play the guitar like Roy? I guarantee you, if Robert Johnson had lived long enough he would have plugged in too. Do you see anyone in that crowd that isn't having fun, and for me that's what listening and playing music has meant for me, fun. I'd like to see you toss of this ditty as proficiently as Roy. Fat chance I'd say.
You can call Roy Rogers whatever you want, he will always be an ACE - A GUITAR MASTER - A SLIDE WIZZARD - like it or not. Hope to see him again soon in Copenhagen. He is amazing. The best around these days. René Denmark
Terraplane Blues.... Robert Johnson telling his story about his woman through an Essex Terraplane automobile... He's gonna "get down in that connection"... LOL... Great song and Roy does it proud!
Godammit... this must be one the best slide performances I've ever heard...!!!! I will make an effort not to be so very intimidated, then maybe just maybe I can learn something. But this is so very god that one easily can feel like it's unattainable to learn how to play at this level.
In 1987 I'd met Roy Rogers in Caspar Inn (CA 95420) and I adviced him to plan a tour through Germany. He said, it could be a good idea, but he hadn't yet tought about it. More than 20 years later I read, that he really made a tour through Europe include Germany a few years after I had spoken with Roy in California. Unfortunately I'd missed him here in my native country, but I can watch and listen to him at youtube = still amazing, he's a great guitarist and a pleasant personable guy.
Roy Rodgers is the MASTER of cross-rhythmic attack! Love to see him LIVE because his style doesn't come thru on these Utoob vids...His compositions sound like two guitars most of the time! Lovin' your blooz Roy~!
How could I not know who this guy was? I thought I knew blues. Heard him on Bluesville a week ago. I thought, "RR was an old country star -- didn't know he did blues"
" ...as he finished the live show it appeared that each hand had 20 fingers, each arm had 10 hands, and each shoulder had 10 arms. The person behind me yelled 'I didn't know a human could do THAT' "- from an article and interview and review by Robert Horn
Amazing accuracy and musicality. He's playing this one in Open G for anyone interested in that kind of thing. Guitar sure looks like it's been played, from the wear and tear on it. Love the tone. Edit to Add: woops. Looks like he's playing it in Open E, capo choked up to key of A. Just shows how it can throw one off if they aren't paying attention. 🙂
Well, still don't know if he is THE greatest slide player, but have to admit I have never seen anyone be able to pick non-slide notes like that with the slide still on one of his fingers .. not even Thorogood or Delbert Mc.'s guitarist .. wow .. 🙃

I’ve done it, I’ve officially found the most underrated group on the planet🤯
No one . . . and I mean no one on God's earth plays slide guitar like Roy Rogers. He is a king in his own realm.
I would love to see Roy and Sonny Landreth jam together - two of our greatest living slide masters feeding off each other. Then throw in Ry Cooder for an encore.
I'd like to see him with Derick Trucks@@1blastman
Absolutely the definition of a great player - the folks can hardly dance! They have to keep watching him - they can't believe what they hear!
Thumbs up if you would like to see Roy and Sonny Landreth jam together on slide guitars. That's my slide fantasy.
Get enough thumbs up and it just might happen at a festival.
THAT would be AWESOME!!! ... Get Derrick Trucks in on the act? And THAT would be REALLY AWESOME !!! 🤠
There's a pretty good duet with Roy and Bonnie Raitt called "Gnawin' on it".
@@TheDrummer51 Yeah and lets get Ry Cooder out for an encore.
and throw Colin Linden in the mix!

I love all your stuff Roy. Thank you for such dedication to your craft, and for all the entertainment you’ve provided to millions of us!
How can anyone criticize this master...he's got to be in the top ten slide men in the world....
Oh yeah
Hey Blues,Fantastic page & vibes my friend

Wow, this is outstanding! Can’t believe I’ve not heard of him before.
just glad this guy is still alive and well, long life to him and Bonnie Rait too.
Great performance, great audience. Roy is one of the greatest slide players of all time.
I was BLESSED to see him with Norton Buffalo twice! Both Times unforgettable.......

After having seen this clip like 20 times I finally noticed the stick master in the background. That is some tight drumming. Masterfull!
He is great and that kit has such a good sound!
I've seen musicians since 1962 and this one of the finest!
Saw him last night, 16 years after this. He still can do this and more.
Saw Roy a few years back in Portland , that guy can play. Derrick Trucks, John Hammond, and a few other slide players in his league. His Terraplane Blues with John Lee Hooker is one of my favorites. Roy’s guitars are really interesting machines too
Used to see this guy like 20 years ago in a little club in Dearborn Mich. He's good, real good

I read somewhere that before he died, Robert was experimenting with an early electric guitar.
I play slide and just love hearing this man. The guitar has holes in it from his years of practice and performing. Makes it sound better I am sure.
You can call Roy Rogers whatever you want, he will always be an ACE - A GUITAR MASTER - A SLIDE WIZZARD - like it or not.

And that, boys and girls, is how a slide guitar is played!

Oh man! Killer...... This guy was a HUGE influence on me to even play guitar. More people need to know bout him.
In 1987 I'd met Roy Rogers in Caspar Inn (CA 95420) and I adviced him to plan a tour through Germany. He said, it could be a good idea, but he hadn't yet tought about it.

I have to see this Roy Rogers in person someday, what a show it would be! Come to Texas, Okla, or Arkansas, I'll drive.
Jeeze this looks like possibly the most fun show of all time
How could I not know who this guy was? I thought I knew blues. Heard him on Bluesville a week ago. I thought, "RR was an old country star -- didn't know he did blues"
Small venue, hot blues guitar, dancing in the isle, that’s heaven right there!
Brilliant artist. Phenomenal interpretation!
Carrying on a long tradition with his own soul attached.
He hardly needs a band. You could take them away and give them a cup of tea each and the music would still be freakin awesome.
More !!!
