    Two years later, after playing Xenonauts off and on and finally nearing the end of my first campaign, I can say I appreciate the air combat and what they were trying to do. In UFO Defense and Vanilla EU, you could just snap plasma beams on your starting interceptors and just turn your brain off with regard to the air combat. Long War's solution to nerf the interceptor weapons into oblivion was...a mixed bag.
    Here, a big focus is on using good tactics when your aircraft aren't necessarily the strongest ones in the sky, and Xenonauts give you five combat craft with distinct roles. It's not about dice rolls. It's not about the plasma cannon or the fusion lance. It's about whether the craft has 1 cannon, 2 cannons, light missiles, heavy torpedoes. Condors and Corsairs are good for air superiority. Foxtrots and Marauders can take down larger ships. Furies delete anything from existence.
    The extra microing for air combat isn't always fun. But that's why auto resolve is there. What is fun is outmaneuvering anything the aliens put in the sky. What is fun is dominating the air until your financial gains are maxed out on multiple continents. What is fun is seeing the still image of the Fury sucking a UFO into a black hole.
    It's just a shame because a big criticism of Xenonauts is that it plays it too safe; that it's too much like UFO Defense without trying anything new of its own. And the one thing they really did change was met with such mixed reception. A lot of people didn't like the air combat mini-game.

    Is this a beta build? Corsairs are only armed with two cannons. And alien interceptor are cake for a single Condor with tier-4 weapons and the proper micro.

    Maurice Danens Good question. The current patch of the gameplay is diffrent than the beta gameplay where I captured this footage. All the aircrafts used to require manual upgrade of aircraft weapons. This is not the case with current patch of the game. The aircraft weapons get upgraded now automatic if you have researched the tier weapons like Magstorms.

    I still hope autoresolve will be a viable option throughout the endgame, as this minigame could possibly ruin the overall experience for many, including me :P
    Cool or not, I'd rather if it was an option, not a chore!

      Funny. I had the exact opposite reaction. I absolutely adore the air game, but I didn't finish the campaign because the ground combat became such a slog for me. I felt I was fighting the same battle over and over again on the ground.
      It doesn't help that, while there's a nice mix of weapons for your infantry, you'll be using that same mix throughout the game. Your laser pistol becomes a plasma pistol, your laser carbine becomes a plasma carbine, etc. Only the damage stat really changes, along with the number of shots in the mag (halved for energy weapons) and the type (thermal or kinetic). The stats that govern how you use them stay the same. You don't even get psionics to mix things up.
      In contrast, the air game does change when you tech up. You go from one cannon and two light missiles to two heavy missiles to two cannons, requiring a different strategy every time.
      To each his own I suppose. Though you're getting the long end of the stick: Air combat lasts less than a tenth as long as the ground combat. If you don't like the air combat, it's only a nuisance. If you grow sick of the ground combat... well, there's the X-COM reboot :)

    I have to ask, why are you shooting down battleships and carriers with the standard autocannons?
    Shouldn't you have Magstorms or at least plasma cannons at this stage?

    Damn dude... i wish i had turned this feature off when i had the chance cuz now i can't cuz im playing it on ironman with the X-division mod enabled.
