    Sigur Ros is THE perfect group for you to react to. They put in so many layers and changes in pattern... the vocals are always soo beautiful, along with them not (or rarely) singing in English, which makes it easier for us native English speakers to simply see the singer as an instrument.

They originally sung in Icelandic and their own language they called "hopelandic" which gives adds to their ethereal sound. More recently he started singing in English. Jonsi plays the guitar with an actual bow* (not an electronic/magnetic one).

      They always confuse saying that "hopelandic" is a language created by jonsi (the singer of sigur ros). "Hopelandic'' is not a language and that is something jonsi always makes very clear as it lacks structure, grammar and meaning. It is only a set of words without any meaning that its objective is to allow to concentrate mainly on Jonsi's voice, since they are invented words, he can place them wherever he wants and with a very similar sound so that the intonation and the way of singing them are very fluid and he can get the most potential out of his voice.

    • @ErikErnstsings
      @ErikErnstsings 3 роки тому +2

      I think Glósóli is in Icelandic. Also, "Hopelandic" isn't really a language, as vocalizations aren't words so much as a combination of vowels that best suit the notes of the melody, from my understanding.

    YES! I was one of the many asking you to do Sigur Rós. THANK YOU, GEEBZ!
    The singer Jónsi's (his) tonal consistency and falsetto is amazing. You get hit with the more post-rock heaviness/ vibe toward the end. Never worry about the lyrics. It's a mix of Icelandic/ Hopelandic (Gibberish). He purposefully uses his voice as an instrument.
    I'm hoping "Svefn-g-englar" (pronounced "Svain Gainglar") is on your list because with cans on, that will blast you to outer space. He plays his guitar with a cello bow. (In live versions, he'll sing into his pick-ups.) An absolute marvel of a band to witness live. I could've died right there in utter bliss.

  • @arockinsamsara
    @arockinsamsara 3 роки тому +4

    So glad you found your way to Sigur Ros! As others have mentioned, the singer is a guy, Jonsi (pronounced Yonsi). The band is from Iceland, and this song is in Icelandic (unlike their 2002 album ( ), which is in an invented language) but even when the songs have actual lyrics they are still quite poetic and abstract, Jonsi is really using his falsetto as an additional instrument. There have so many great songs you might react to, including some less ambient songs... I am going to repeat a comment I made on a previous video, giving you some suggestions as well as some breakdowns of how their different albums have different sounds/vibes:
    Knowing you have been enjoying Radiohead, you might not be surprised to know that Sigur Ros worked with Radiohead in 2003 to compose and perform original works for a performance by Merce Cunningham Dance Company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Plus, even if you don't think you have heard them you probably have, they show up in TV and movies all the time (usually during emotional cathartic moments and/or end credits).
    All of their albums share the same DNA of being ephemeral, cinematic, and densely layered and composed. But aside from that the albums can vary widely. Here is a rundown of their major releases and what you might want to react to from each... But, really, brother, just pick an album and go from top to bottom with, experience the whole thing...
    + 1997 - Von - This is their most ambient album, where you see the bones of their post-rock identity but it has a light touch. Check out Hún Jörð: ua-cam.com/video/HtbTLf_Mz-M/v-deo.html.
    + 1999 - Ágætis Byrjun - Their first US released album, where they really start flexing their rock-sensibilities. Check out Starálfur: ua-cam.com/video/7fEUUnXDnbk/v-deo.html or Viðrar vel til loftárása: ua-cam.com/video/akYuy2FMQk4/v-deo.html.
    + 2002 - ( ) - This is their most conceptual album, sung entirely in Hopelandic/Volenska, an invented language, and all of the tracks are untitled, encouraging the listener to experience it on their terms. Check out Untitled 1: ua-cam.com/video/hqJ8hFgYwVg/v-deo.html.
    + 2005 - Takk... - Back to their light-handed rock experience, lots of building, tension, and storytelling. You already checked out Glósóli, now maybe Hoppípolla: ua-cam.com/video/mZTb8WxEW78/v-deo.html.
    + 2008 - Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust - Leaning more into a post-pop sensibility, lots of energy and drama, again very cinematic. I had suggested Ara Batur from this album in a previous comment: ua-cam.com/video/vUK_ou_mTQE/v-deo.html, that is their version of a rock ballad, but also check out Inní mér syngur vitleysingur: ua-cam.com/video/WgaQC7B3GIE/v-deo.html.
    + 2012 - Valtari - A return to their contemplative rock mode, away from the pop sensibilities. Check out Varúð: ua-cam.com/video/Gf1h2PMPCAo/v-deo.html.
    + 2013 - Kveikur - Their last studio album, with a grimy, almost industrial layer added to their usual ephemera. Check out Brennisteinn: ua-cam.com/video/Oc6zXSdYXm8/v-deo.html.
    + 2021 - Odin's Raven Magic - This is a orchestral symphony they composed and performed in London in 2003, set to an ancient poem about Norse + Icelandic mythology, and was just released as recordings this year. More "conventional" than their usual fare, which makes sense thinking it bridges the gap between ( ) and Takk... . Check out Dvergmál: ua-cam.com/video/8AeI6-URlR0/v-deo.html .
    Really, you can't go wrong.

    OMG! I’m so happy you did a reaction video to Sigur Rós! Another one of my all-time favorite bands. They opened their US leg of the tour for this album (Takk) here in Honolulu, at the Hawaii Theatre back in 2004…an AMAZING sold out show! The band name is from Jónsi’s younger sister's name who was born shortly before they formed the band and translates from Icelandic to Victory Rose. This song “Glósóli”, translates to Glowing Sun.
    Like most others have mentioned, the singer, Jónsi Birgisson, is male singing in falsetto and also, many of his lyrics (but not on all songs) are what they term, Vonlenska or Hopelandic, not really words but sounds and syllables strung together. Perfect in my mind for you to react to since you refer to the vocalists as another instrument in the arrangement and not on the lyrics. Jónsi is also the guitarist and many songs are played with a bowed guitar which creates that vast sweeping soundscape. He has a couple solo albums too which are insanely good.
    One interesting thing you mentioned was this reminded you of the music from that scene in Gladiator. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance scored that film and I think the music of the two bands are very similar. Dead Can Dance is definitely a band I wish you’d react to, although their songs definitely aren’t for everyone.
    Some other songs from this band I’d recommend if you circle back to them are: Ný batterí, Untitled 1 or Untitled 8, Í Gær, Kveikur

Keep your tongue in exactly the same position, don't move your jaw at all, but round your lips forward like saying oo in food. That gets you closer to the ö sound. The r is trilled, and the vocal chords are not active when you trill this r, (this is called voiceless. If you're familiar with Spanish r you trill it in the same way but you don't activate your vocal chords. It's the same difference between the s in 'sound' and the z in 'Zach'. The only difference between s and z is whether your vocal chords are vibrating. (Icelandic has both voiced and voiceless r but the one in Björk is voicless).

    Seeing you pick up Sigur Ros made my day! I think my favourite song of theirs is Popplagid - highly recommended!
