- Jack takes a first look at the new Renault Scenic E-Tech. The biggest of Renault's four EV lineup, sitting above the Megane and upcoming 4 and 5, does this new Scenic boast the same level of innovation and clever design as its predecessors, or has it turned into just another crossover SUV?

"No rare earth metals used in either the battery or the motor, by the way... Have that Mr. Bean!" WELL SAID!
Not a sentence I was expecting in a car review. 😂
So funny though the timing and way he said it 😂
No-one's batteries have rare earths in them, except for one manufacturer 15 years ago that put some ytterbium in their LFP cells. So the battery part of that is a pointless claim (except of course that clueless articles claim they do and countering nonsense has become important). No rare earths in the motors presumably means they are using electromagnets throughout, not permanent magnets (as they almost all have neodymium in). I think that's a trend in motor design. PM motors are very good as you get rotor energised without using any energy nor brushes but they do have coasting losses. Being able to turn the rotor off fixes that. Complicated tradeoffs in which is most efficient overall. For powertools PM defo wins. For cars I think it depends on the details.
So, why would you remove the wheel cap thing and reduce the range in the first place?
Good question. Only thing I could think of was better cooling for the brakes. Not sure how much you'd need that on an EV with good regenerative braking.
Aesthetics, because French care only about looks.
Cus the owner thinks it's ugly?
Ask Tesla owners, pretty much every M3 with the wheel covers has them removed. I wouldent. I'm a cyclist, aero is everything 😁
There will be no need to remove it yourself as they will be quickly stolen, because someone else needs them? No, just because they can, its so easy and they will. And of course the car manufacturer is happy to sell you another for 50€ (plus taxes) a piece.
I do agree with you. Renault really has found their roots and begun innovating again. Well, for the last couple of years since the Zoe entered the market. It was the one that convinced me that the future of transport is electric.
Try making some regular, long distant journeys in your EV (just a couple of hundred miles from home would be more than enough) this winter and you’ll soon change your tune about the future of transport being electric….
These new Renault EVs look really nice, with good specs. Waiting to see the 5
"100 miles. Per wheel" comedy gold. Got me good.
Love it, one of the best looking EVs out there for me and certainly the best from the established western manufacturers. The exterior is a good combo of modern and interesting but not too fussy and the interior looks practical and useable with decent tech. It looks really clean and fresh but also recognisably a car with familiar controls and layouts that are proven and work. (great review BTW :o)
This looks great I like Peugeot 3008 and DS models too
It's bloody brilliant. I was worried that Renault might be behind the game but this car has some really amazing features that set it way ahead.
@@chillfluencer I fail to see how it's Chinese at all
very nice family car
Is it me or is he only trying to be enthusiastic ?. Another paid, sponsored review?. Don't want to upset the people who pay you or do you deals do you.
I kept a Renault grand scenic for 10 years from new whil kids grew up and absolutely loved it. Currently have a kadjar. I think the megane or this are my next car
A Renault Espace 4 EV would be fantastic. I hate those big chunky SUV's sold as "family cars", like the new Espace 6.
why would you like a School BUS..
Because they do everything better than Stupid Useless Vehicles...@@tommyjakobsen5504
@@tommyjakobsen5504 because it's exactly that - a small bus for a family. It can sit 7 adults in complete comfort, with luggage. It can carry 5 full size bikes in the back. It can do alot of things that an SUV with two seats in the boot can't do. Although it's a car that was conceived almost 30 years ago.
@@mishuliciusExactly right these days the roads are full of look alike 4x4s not much sense there. MPV are a proper family vehicle.
As the owner of a (now slightly knackered) 14 year old Scenic 2 which has transported my family all over the UK and into Europe for over 160000 miles, I love the look of this new one and am relieved to see Renault have retained the excellent interior space. Replacing diesel with the electric power train is the icing on the cake!
Love it to bits ... WOW! Very good review as well and yes, it is certainly good looking and as I have had a Renault Scenic for a few years I must say, it a leap forward in design and practicality. The only thing you haven't demonstrated is the seating if they are fully flat when folded down and also it any configuration is also given to the practicality. After all, that is what made that Scenic
I like the design, it's modern without being bland, the back is a nice blend of minimal and edgy design without being "to now" that will date very quick, the interior is nice, can't wait to see your test.
About time the complacent euro manufacturers started doing it right. I’ve never been a fan of Renault but, I am definitely starting to warm - and I can’t wait until the 5 comes out!
That was very fast and casual note about not using rare earth metals , that is huge deal if true
They replaced it all with magic fairy dust 😂
Just remember rare earths aren't rare as in scarce, they are just rarely mined for on a global scale.
Plus cobalt and nickel are by products of iron ore and copper mining mostly.
It is. Depending on the tech used, some EV engine don't use rare earths. And it isn't new, the 10 year old Zoe already didn't use rare earths.
I like this review as we own a 2018 scenic and love it, so when we are ready to get our next car we might venture down the electric route and give this scenic a try. Nice design outside and in once again, space is thought out giving the car lots more compartments to store things in.
I agree with the boot design, I feel it could of come out from being flat for a more rounded look which could assist with the overall aerodynamics & the aesthetics.
I loved my old Scenic RX4, it was perfect as an all-rounder for my job in the countryside. I'm looking for an EV now, and hope that Renault will release a Scenic E-Tech with dual motors, increased ride height and possibly a rugged-ish exterior: at this point the only options seem to be the Solterra/bZ4x (too inefficient) and the future EX30 Cross Country (too small).
bZ4X AWD was almost efficient as the Model Y RWD in the big Norwegian Sumer range test (141 Wh/km vs 131) so they are hardly inefficient. Smallish usable capacity yes, inefficient no.
Fully agree. They need to make this but without making it to expensive.
My use case is the same as you.
Great review and though I wish they’d been brave and stuck to the roots of the Scenic I’d seriously consider it for its interior space…
Great job Jack, all the relevant info whilst keeping it fun. I suggest adding battery chemistry to the mix and bringing up that LFP has no nickel or cobalt and lasts way longer than standard lithium ion even though it charges slower would really encourage uptake.
This is the wife’s UA-cam account but I’ve watched all the segments and shows and promote fully charged at the slightest chance.
Best presenters. Love to all.
Noel (Sydney Australia)
Love it. Our 2009 Grand Scenic is still going, just tyres and the odd switch at mot, except thanks to Malvern’s roads getting through anti-roll bars! Think they need a road tester?
So Intresting fully charged dont have more viewers the production value is amazing and the host is A class.
As a previous owner of an ICE Renault Scénic, I am wholly impressed. Thank you, Jack. Pass me one to this side of the pond, would you?
That car's gonna be very popular, I can already tell.
Looks like a car we’d see in those early 00s Sci-fi movies.
Like I robot?
@@4literv6 yes that’s the one
@@4literv6 and Artificial Intelligence. Crazy how we are actually driving cars like that now
Looks like a toy sci-fi car to me. Very beautiful car. Cars have gotten so beautiful since the electric revolution. Grilles are so ugly.
@@Moses_VII Hyundai design electric cars are really doing it for me. The Ioniq 5 is still a head turner
Looks GREAT it's now top of my short list for August
Looks good outside. Looks great inside. I think they're onto a winner
Great points you made there. I like the car too. We have had good experiences with Renault in our family, and I believe that this car could be our next one.
Love the reimagined 80s design language of those wheels. Renault and citroen did a few lovely aero wheels back in the day.
Hi Jack. Brilliant as always. Please could you add to your reviews whether the car comes with a spare wheel or not. Most if not all cars come with this awful gel to seal a tire to get you to the nearest tire repear center, which takes for ever.
Great review! Fantastic looking vehicle.
I absolutely love it, and can't wait to get to drive it. Contemplating exchanging my 2020 Audi A4 coalmonster for this. Imagine that!
Some great thought put into it alright. Yhat grill needs to go do its just tertible snd looks like its csrrying net on the front and looks like an afterthought.
The magic roof do is brilliant and the flip around cup holders with the phone holders too is brilliant.
I can see them flying off with each pothole you crash into…. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!
Wheeeeeee hehe 😅😂
With all that extra battery weight presumably ?
Love those rear cup plus phone/tablet holders. Neat innovations.
Can you sit three across the rear seat? That's a key requirement for us, so would be keen to have this covered in larger car reviews.
Thanks as always Jack, great review and really helpful information!
You probably can, considering you could comfortably do so in every single previous generation of the Scenic...
But every scenic before this one had 3 real seats. I've had Scenics for over 20 years but the lack of 3 real seats just lost them a customer and likely many others.
This is also what I came to the comments to find out!
Just perfect 👏👏 Hope the price is competitive - they will smash it 💪
will the right hand drive car get the full size screen or will it be like the megane where we get a small one??
Yes do like and it’s a good size plus the boot is as well, also do like the front end looks cool.
Love this!! Glad to see the Scenic back again. The interior is excellent and the ‘sunroof’ innovation is brilliant! ❤
My 1st impressions are.. that I like this presenter! Appreciate you going into the details with your take on things from the space-saving no-need for sunroof roller mechanism to how an 11 year old might use the backseat! Oh, and the new scenic too of course! Now if only they brought back the +2 seat 💺 3rd row!
I really like the solar bay roof.
More models should have this as standard. The Megane e-tech, just to name one
Those wheel things i really dont get.
Looks nice! First time I actually saying, this EV Renault looks good and practical at the same time!
I hope they will be available on the used car market 8-10 years from now!
It's so nice that I wish it was available in the American market.
I love this new world where we have wheel inserts that add range like how red stripes add horsepower.
Didn’t think I’d say so but I love it.
Be nice when it comes to the uk to see that we shafted on spec compared to everywhere else in the world
im impressed, i drive a 1999 renault scenic and love how far down the tailgate goes shame they didnt carry over the idea to this one
Or go to the other extreme, and have a split rear tailgate (so you can just open the top half if you want to reach in and get something without everythign else falling out... and then a fold-down lower lip for when you want lip-less access, etc.
Hey Jack, does it have heads up display and matrix headlights?
very nice, then are we getting them in the uk?
What about a 7-seat version? I love this thing, but without the 3rd row, it's just a big Mégane!
I like the way it looks, though as an ex scenic mk2 owner I do wish they were a bit more adventurous. I guess there’s no need to as the packaging looks great. I’m a big fan of what they’re doing though the pricing is a bit too high. Therefore I’ll be hang around the second hand market in 5+ years waiting for the residuals to drop like a stone.
Thank God the UK market gets the large screen options, unlike the Mégane that is only offered with the small screen
Scenic was a sub-model Megane when first introduced. Look at what it has become, awesome! Not sure about these pads in the wheel caps, why not have these fixed?
That interior is AMAZING, I can't wait to see what they do to the 5 now.
I probably won't move from my MK3 scenic into this. Agree with Jack about losing the round edge, and also the sliding seat, sliding centre console, picnic table, those family-friendly stuff. Pity that it chose to go down the semi-lux decor, risking someone (about to open a can of coke) shouting 'It's just a couch' after being told 'wait until we get to a service station'.
Perfect size, practicality, interior, exterior look. The only question marks are price and depreciation. Will it compete favorably with Polestar 4, Niro EV, Audi Q4, etc., for what is expected to be in similar price range (or slightly less, but likely with steeper depreciation).
First impressions good. However, parts of the car do raise questions. . What is real world performance like? If the glass roof cracks, how difficult and exoensive is it to replace (thinking about falling branches and hail storms). The middle screen console is directed too much to the driver. Can it be swivled towards the passenger. With the large cockpit dislay, the middle infotainment screen looks oddly overkill. I just feel like ripping itboff the dashboard. Can the center infotainment screen be removed and the carbsokely operated in the cockpit screen only? Despite the clever explanation of the the car motor compnents on the front, does it have a front boot? Does it have airco? Does itbsupport any form of V2G, V2L or V2H? Does itbsupport autonomous safety features? Is the turning circle good? Etc.
Another decent EV and another great review. 🤟
Will the uk get the big screen unlike the megane e tech?? Great review.
Looks great. I love that phone/tablet holder!! And very long armrest there, not one of those very short ones. Looking forward to this production car, tests, and R5..😊
Say Renault again Jack!! 😜
Good to see there are just rear lights and no pointless rear light bars
I wish it was more Scenic-esque... If they managed to fit the engine in the front, and keep the hood short, I believe they could have done that once again. But then again, it makes sense if it's possible to store even more stuff in the front compared to the combustion engine car, and if it has to take up space, it should be in the front, for safety reasons...
Like it, not sure I'd trade in my ID.3, but yeah, looks good. UK price?
Very nice car! Just a bit worried about the glass roof and the effect of a summer sun on the inside temperature... even if it's opaque...
It's neat! I like the design and the practicality
❤ I love the big middle finger to mr bean 😂
Very nice! I like!
What about the international standard of units?
Great review as always Jack. The only thing I’d love to see is an ev that’s designed for a family of 5. The Scenic was always that kind of car in the past, but the fancy middle armrest thing seems to have made way for a usable middle seat. That said, it’s a nice looking car with a great range and features.
Try a Skoda Enyaq. More range, bigger boot and better all round and cheaper than a model Y. It does around 4.5 miles per kwh.
@rogerphelps9939 Lovely car indeed. I'm currently driving a 2015 Nissan Leaf. Enyaq not quite within my price range yet! I'm more hopeful for more family evs coming down the track into the used market.
I also have a 2015 Leaf. It now just does short trips. The Enyaq is a huge step up. Not needed to use public charging yet. @@joelmarcus7958
interesting car, shame there is no frunk, looking at the bare chassis it looks like you coul have a couple of vertical cubby holes for cables or a thin set of bags etc. Any idea on the price point or when this will be available?
I like the new "row of medium sized physical buttons in one place to control everything else" trope automakers are doing now. It may not be artistically daring but its functional and simple enough to fit with any dash design. Once you learn the buttons after driving for a week its fast and easy to use without looking.
Thank you
Three independent rear seats? Price?
Thanks for a concise and informative review, Jack. 2 questions - will it be only EV or hybrid powered also and what’s the expected
price range?
It's EV-only
Love it great review as always
I bought a citroen c4 grand Picasso 1.6hdi. Affordable and very economical on diesel.
No more debt!
I'd absolutely have one!
Looks fantastic
Great point about the width of the boot. Less than 1 metre between the wheel arches. This version is actually less practical than a Mk.I Scenic 😕
Well.. we own the second Grand Scenic, and we use it daily for school runs and city driving. It is a very reliable car having over 300k km on an 1.5dci. But looking at today's range of Renault cars, I cant choose another spacious, light weight, easy to use, flexible seats, confortable Renault.
The large head room, large windows, enormous cargo space, confortable and adjustable seats (specially in the back) are all part of the recipe we love the Scenic.
We also own a Nissan X-trail and I can confirm that the SUV is far less spacious and confortable.
And note that space does not have to come from a large sized car, the mid-size Megane chassie was enough for a family of 4.
We traveled all Europe with the Scenic, but today I have no option to replace it, unfortunatly. 😢
I do love the back armrest :))
I like it! Renault has seriously stepped their design game up. The new Clio, Captur, Rafale and now Scenic come on! I can't remember last time I was so excited about a new car design, well done to Renault! Not just one but all new models except Megane are absolutely beautiful cars!
A decent EV package, let's wait for the price list.
The Scenic naming is a really poor choice. They could have come up with a new name or possibly call this model the Megane...
Back in the day, the first ones were actually called Megane Scenic.
The issue is more how greedy they are with functionalities on the basic trim. Other brands offer so many more extras (e.g heat pump) by default. With the Megane e-tech, the heat pump is only available on the most expensive trim😕
So why would you ever remove the wheel inserts? Do they make some horrific screaming noise or something? Maybe a bit cynical but seems like a great way to sell you bits of plastic when the clips break and your wheels look different
Exactly!
It would be for looks. If anything they make the car quieter
I have an EQB right now. Will gladly change it for this Scenic !
I am a bit puzzled by the wheels "trick".
I think it's a very handsome and cleverly designed vehicle. Sadly, I suppose we'll never see them in the U.S.
Well this is a serious challenger to the Ariya (same platform). If it has a better ride and comes in at the same price I think i'd choose this.
Missed you, bro.
I am guessing UK and Ireland will get the small infotainment screen, same as the Megane e-tech.
I used to own a Renault Scenic .It was comfortable to drive and fairly solidly built but everything electric on that vehicle would fail at some point. The electric windows would each fail once a year and each cost a fortune to fix - in the end I learnt to replace the parts myself. The thought of buying a EV from Renault gives me the shivers.
I like the look, love the features and space, ticks a lot of boxes for me. Unfortunately, I live in the U.S. so ...
Used to be the EPA, now it is probably NTHSA, as well as Renault got their ass kicked in the US. The Renault 10 was a nice car.
Love the back seat arm rest.. Could you bring along a medium sized stuffed dog for your reviews as well. We will need a car that takes a 6ft 5 wee one and a medium sized barking machine. So one is covered very well by the Jack back seat test but reviews tend to not show what impact the boot has on a dog.
Why not leave the wheel covers on as part of design
Looks like I'm the only one that thinks it looks fantastic 😂
Very Megane-like, especially upfront inside, which as a Megane E-tech owner and loving it, is no bad thing :-) Over eh summer I've been getting 4'2-4.4MkWh locally and 3.9 on a recent 435 mile trip to Devon. If I had a family I might have considered one had it been available... but I don't and it wasn't so that's that. That grille pattern is interesting, make it look form many angles like its a real grille floating in front. Not sure the white does the shape any favours though. Thankfully its not grey :-( I went with red with black roof on my Megane E-tech.
Same.. Freaking love it! :D
You must be a GAYLORD, since your choice of color is RED?
@@hanzohanzo1639 yes. A color makes me a gaylord.. great logic.
So.. what is the allowed colors?
How many ISOFIX go into this? Is there a Grande version with 7 seats? How many ISOFIX on that?
Love it.
Got to love the Peugeot copy, good old Giles Videl
I knew the good old centre parting would one day make a comeback
Isn't it there because it is an ICE that has been kludged rather than a totally new EV design.
How big is the boit? Before I start mithering the other half
