  • The vehicle was in the shop for a routine oil change, when a tracking device was discovered hanging from the small, four-door sedan. The car's owner had no idea the device was attached to her car.

I use them all the time. I sell you a car on payments you're getting one and I'm going to have it so hidden that you won't know where it's at. I had a guy stop paying skipped town 8 hours away. I hit him up asking when he was going to pay. He said he would by the end up the week. The following Monday I repoed it in Denver. Guy told me he was still in town.

Lots of car dealerships install GPS on their cars for sale on the lot to help recover them if they're stolen and some dealerships that offer buy here pay here will install GPS on their to keep track of them until they're paid off. But many times dealerships forget to remove them once the cars are off of their ✋ hands.

Take it off, conceal it in some obscure spot where it would make sense such a device might fall off a car. Then set up a security camera on that spot and see who comes looking for it when it hasn't moved for several days. Someone put it there for a reason and curiosity will likely get the better of them in wanting to see what's up; and frugality will encourage them to retrieve and re-use a device that is obviously still working.

I did car audio installs for 10 years. I found them probably twice a month. I think repo places use it to track high-risk loan defaulters. I used to mention it to the customer and most would reply surprised and claim they didn't know about it. Maybe. Maybe not. But I stopped even asking after a while. I see them all the time. Heck. Maybe this tracker was on the car when they bought it and is now dead and broken. Who knows.

Even back in 2015 when this was uploaded coin-sized trackers that you could access via a smartphone app were just months from hitting the market. I'm pretty sure it now defies all but the most earnest detectives to check a car over for tracking devices. Chances are that car was fitted with a locator by the leasing firm that owned it at some point or it used to be in a rental fleet.
It's not necessarily some jealousy or stalking issue. The bank maybe just wanted to be able to retrieve their asset if a lease defaulted. Done fleet-wide then some units sold off but the gadget wasn't retrieved.

In SOME cases these tracking devices are installed by the company (or their agent) that financed the vehicle's purchase or made a title loan. Some agents attach trackers to a vehicle that's subject to lender repossession when the vehicle can't be towed right away. Those installations might be permitted in the loan agreement.

Any LOGICAL honest person, may take initial offense, and if nothing is found then they are TRULY vindicated and they now know their partner's mistrust is misplaced and can make an educated and informed decision on how to proceed, either continue to be with and love them for fighting for them or leave them for not trusting them, but now it's all out in the open.... This is an older Lexus, however every new car now has some sort of tracking capability. Whether it’s through the infotainment system or antitheft module it can easily be tracked. Even semi trucks and trailers have trackers on them, when I did long haul trucking my company would use gps trackers to help the drivers find available empty trailers at warehouse lots. If a car is stolen from a dealer lot or shipping yard it can be tracked in so many ways, even through the infotainment systems.

If you find a GPS in your car you can have a little fun. Start driving the car to areas you have never been before. For example every city has their own nefarious areas. Drive to park or small convenience store. Don't get out of the car. Just stay there for about 5 minutes then drive away. Do this everyday or twice a week or whatever. This will make them think. Or maybe drive to a police station and sit there a few minutes. Walk in and ask advice on something like defense classes they might know about.

or its a financed vehicle that was up for repo.
the repo company will put these on cars, so if the finance company wants it reposed, they aren't driving all around town looking for it.
i worked for a repo comany, people will fall behind on their payments, and try to hide their vehicles at properties that aren't listed when they applied for financing.
we would charge the finance company to place these trackers on cars ( a service fee and they would also pay for the tracker itself).
sometimes we might forget to remove the tracker or they might drive the vehicle so far out of state that we aren't gonna retrieve it.

I managed the Service Dept. for a used car dealership for years. This is a totally legal maneuver by retail Loan Agencies. They place the statement in their Retail Disclosure. Most are second and third chance loan agencies, but I have installed them for banks as well known as Chase and others. They are installed in the event of a loan forfeiture, and while many private investigators use tracking devices, most are installed by loan agencies for just such an event. Not only did I run a Service Center, I also worked for a repossession agency as well. These tracking devices helped us to locate cars due for repossession. At no time whatsoever did we or the banks "track" vehicles unnecessarily. They were only "pinged" once the loan holder reneged on their assigned payment plan. And, for the record, if you found one of the implants I administered it meant that you tore your car to the ground. I became rather adept at hiding the tracking devices from would-be loan-skippers. Don't like the move by the bank? 1) READ YOUR LOAN TERMS. 2) DON'T DEFAULT ON YOUR LOAN. I ultimately let the repossession aspect of the business for personal reasons, doesn't mean that there aren't some out there that don't deserve to have this. Say whatever you will.

Would this mean the loop hole is, the consent is given by the majority owner (the finance company)?

  • @twisted2291

If you bought your car at a "Buy Here Pay Here" type car lot. The chances of having a GPS tracking unit on it is good if you are making payments on the car. The dealer will not tell you about it, but it will be in the contract. So please take your time and read the contract before buying!!!!!!! Used car dealers install them so if you default on your payments. They can kill the starter, and track where the car is at so they can send out the repo company to come and pick it up. Also if you have "On-Star" in your GM brand car or truck. That to is a GPS tracking system.

  • @wlan246
