One of the biggest complaints about the Samsung Galaxy Gear is the fact that it only works with the select devices that Samsung has allowed it to work for (and there aren't many of them). There is a way to fix this, and get a lot more functionality out of your Galaxy Gear in the meantime, though. If you root the Gear (aka gain administrative rights on the device to be allow to change whatever we want) and flash a custom ROM on it (aka flash a new version of the firmware on it), you can then use it like any other Bluetooth device and connect to any other Bluetooth device that supports Bluetooth 4.0. While this won't make Gear Manager work (the app that Samsung uses to send the device notifications, etc.), it will allow it to still control music, make phone calls, and more.

can you still use the gear to take calls? In the bluetooth settings I see that it shows up as a headset.

I am trying to get my neo 2 to sync to my LG K30. I can pair the phone in BT settings but it won't show up on the wear apps. I've tried lollipop and marshmallow but the watch never gets thru the syncing screen :(
Hey! I have a problem when im rooting my samsung galaxy gear... i do all what that "how to root samsung galaxy gear" video says, but the recovery just dont install. When the odin says it has installed, and im trying to go to recovery, it just dont be there,, and the gear will reboot with factory settings.... please help how i can get this root working :(
would the camera work if you take i picture with the gear? does it get transferd to the phone?
No. The photos are stored in the watch. But you can transfer them to the phone by bluetooth.

I installed the Gear Manager apk on android 4.1.2, it works fo sho on 2.3.4 (only if you have Bluetooth 4.0, that is required by the watch, and doesnt depend on android version, because is a hardware thing).

i did this for my galaxy gear 1 and i can use it with a ZTE 460 phone, works fine i can even connect my macbook's bluetooth and share the internet connection to the watch.

I've run into a bump. I rooted my galaxy gear, and everything went smooth up until the recovery part to install the ROM. The screen that said team win was so tiny it was in only a quarter of the screen so I had to reset it and it defaulted back to being unactivated. ?????????

Just found an youtube video on how to bypass the screen. Look for setting up Gear without a phone. The trick is to swipe from the bottom up for about a minute or so. If you still have the device, this will work.
