- Isle of Man TT 2024. Steam Packet ferry Crossing. The last Video from my Isle of Man TT 2024 series. In this video I take the ferry back home from Douglas to Liverpool. Beware what you take on the ferry !

You used to have your tank drained of petrol years ago, with a nice little sticker on your bike to confirm it. It happened to me in 1977 on my first trip to the TT. I don't think many people camped in those days as most of the buildings on the seafront in Douglas were hotels, so bottles of gas wasn't an issue.
That first time we sailed back to Liverpoool there was sky visible on one side and sea on the other through the windows, such was the list, and the royal yacht Britannia was docked in Liverpool as the Queen was visting that day as part of her silver jubilee celebrations. Her ship was three times the size of that manky ferry.
Anyway, the TT. The greatest biking rally on earth on a beautiful island. It should be on every bikers bucket list.
Thanks for your epic comment, that’s really interesting to know what went on years ago
Also went in 77 stayed at hotel chesterfield on mona drive Douglas, seem to remember it was hailwood won on the duke and reads Honda let him down right battle!.correction 1978.
On the subject of petrol tanks being mostly drained before boarding, I remember many years ago when a couple of foreign riders had just filled their tanks prior to boarding the ferry, and they were mightily annoyed to watch the ferry-men draining them…….
yes and craned bikes on board if tide was wrong.saw motorhead play the lido.70,s was a great decade to be young.
@@sproutandkidneysoup2296 The Manx man was the worst boat afloat, no stabilisers use too rock and roll (sick everywhere yuck). How times change!
The instructions from all the loading staff was so ambiguous, I'm surprised you got on at all. All the Ferries I've been on ask you not to have a full tank of fuel or carry gas bottles so no surprise there. I was even asked if I was carrying any knives or Scissors in my camping gear or amongst my tools.............
I always get my gas from amazon. Not killed any drivers yet 😆
My neighbour lived on the IOM or many years. He told me he left for 2 reasons.
1 ...The Island had loads of Special constables who were power mad and if you sneezed that would stick you in one of the many overnight prisons on the island
2....The cost of food and goods was a lot higher that the mainland, and it was too expensive to keep using the ferry to stock up.
Always a downside to where ever you live I guess
I travelled on ferries many times with my camper van. That carried two 7kg gas bottles all I had to do was make sure the gas was turned off at the bottle. The marshalling looked chaotic, several people giving different instructions at the same time. No wonder it was confusing.
Yea was a bit confusing, not that it takes much for me 😆
Great video! I have been waiting for this video! To see what it was like on a bike. Hopefully you enjoyed the TT so did i but the weather wasn't the best. Hopefully you had a safe croosing home.👍
Thanks mate yea had a good safe time, I posted a video of getting on and off at Liverpool to Douglas too. Hopefully better weather next year 👍🏻
@@theflyingyetti_666 hopefully also i enjoyed the TT series this year
Thanks mate that’s lovely to hear. Wales camping videos coming next week. Just got back 😁
Illegal kippers fetch a good price. A guy who I was working with in the Isle of Man was taking orders from home. But forgot they came in pairs! Gave me 5 packs❤😂
It must have been that 😆
They used to confiscate all your petrol before getting on the ferry, so a half empty Gaz bottle probably isnt too bad 😉
Yea so I heard mate
That white Ducati sounds lush!
Yes it does
Brittany Ferries class a motorbike (even with hard, locking panniers) as the same as a bicycle, so no blades of any sort. I have a mini-tool by Gerber in my puncture repair kit, hidden in the tail assembly. I just forget it's there every time I travel on a ferry.
Glad they didn’t take my tent pegs
If it's any consolation, I've been searched the last few times I've come to the TT. Funniest was this time when they run the inverted mirror on a stick under my 900 Triumph. I understand it's use on a car chassis, but under a bike ffs. What we're they looking for? A leaking sump plug😂.
Lucky they didn't confiscate your camping knife & fork. A passenger advised he'd previously had his swiss penknife confiscated...really!!
Olden days it was pumping the petrol out. I don't recall anything on the ticket warning you and many would tank up in Liverpool, fearing expensive pump prices in the IoM.
Chaos, chaos and more disorganised chaos. On our morning return sailing to Liverpool on Monday, post races, the Heysham sailing was leaving an hour earlier. We wasn't allowed into the loading area (it was full for Heysham bound bikes, loading) and instructed to ride back and park in the overcrowded terminal front car park. Total chaos. No signs, or ferry staff on Douglas front to advise this so every biker was turning around and trying to get into a small carpark out front, whilst Douglas rush hour in full swing. Not 1 official from the steam racket company organising the car park and bikes. Hadn't even secured an area free of cars for the bike, creating 1st come lanes, packing bikes in sensibly etc.I mean they knew this was going to happen. They knew sailing times so close and bike/passenger numbers. Piss up in brewery springs to mind. They were also trying to seperate out bikes with panniers just as we were loading. Could easily have been organised in front car park. Then we have several bikes on 1 ticket, that rightly don't wish to be split up. And then they want to search my tank bag on the way out! What am I stealing in my shoebox sized tank bag! A circus dwarf, some Manx skippers, a Peel p50 car ( Google it)
Yea seems a bit over the top lol
Top comment by the way 👌👍🏻
I was stopped on the boat at Douglas , car searched and my gas bottle was confiscated , the funny thing was the camper van next to me had a huge bottle strapped to the rear of it but ‘that was okay’ according to the search team 😂😂😂😂😂 but you can’t camp without a bottle and that was just before lockdown …. I’ve not been back to the Isle of Man since and have no plans to do so in the future , can’t camp without cooking and whilst the TT was something I enjoyed for years the world is a large place so I go further afield today … screw em !
If you buy gas on the island how did it get there 😆
@@theflyingyetti_666 I took the car over and was fine however when returning home they dragged me in the shed and searched , bored they found the gas bottle and made a big thing of it
You can buy gas on the island, how did it get there 🤷♂️. I buy mine from amazon, never blown up a Amazon driver yet 😆
@@theflyingyetti_666 there was a camper van in the queue next to me with a huge bottle on the rear but they ignored that … was just a woman on a bored power trip but the iom needs my custom more than I need hassle so I no longer bother going to the place
I sincerely hope you asked the nice lady if she was going to dispose of the offending gas bottle responsibly...
😆
They don’t like you smuggling kippers off the island. But bringing contraband in from the other way seems less bothersome
So I have been told 😝
I was there and the police were no trouble. Lots of speed traps tho in speed restricted areas.
They are strict but fair and really friendly if you speak to them 👍🏻
After all these years of transporting bikes and its still a disaster we went to iom just before the tt hardly any bikes and it was crap.
I don’t think it’s to bad
I bring along an old multi fuel stove with an empty bottle. If you cannot get a can of gas you burn petrol. It's noisy, normal petrol soots a lot but you can always make your tea.
Might get a Colman petrol stove for next year. I used to have one years ago
Good advice apart from you’re also not allowed vessels which have previously contained flammables either…
Mind you, that’s what I carry
Turn up a bit later and the numpties have usually got bored and don’t bother checking!
@@aygee999 sounds like a plan
That looks very sedate compared to the way it used to be. Not been since 78. Back in the day you used to ride up a gangplank depending on which ferry you caught. Not bad when the deck is level. Right bugger when its high tide and raining. You used to do a trials course before you got there .... always assuming you didn't fall off the side of the plank! Craning them was no safer. Rumour's a plenty of the middle bike being absolutely smashed to bits by the outer two and bikes being dropped in the sea. Never saw it, but heard of it lots of times
It all works fine to be fair buddy
Do the harbour people know what they are doing. All look a bit dis-jointed! petrol stoves work on unleaded no soot super hot!
You just have to go with it, never had any major issues or seen any. Looks worse than it is
Looks more trouble than it's worth, I'll carry on watching it on tv
Na it’s fine, you got to go at least once in your lifetime 👍🏻
There is a big market in smuggling fairy dust from the iom. Sometimes this is stashed in gas bottles. 😂😂😂
I didn’t think of that, sounds about right though 😆
Don’t hide gas bottles, don’t Cary them as for fire protection reasons gas bottles can’t be carried on the ships car deck. Think yourself lucky, when the cross channel hovercraft operated A friend who was crew helped push a camper van with a gas bottle over the side when it caught fire…… because a gas bottle was carried the camper vans insurance was invalid……… could have been a whole lot worse if it had not been parked next to the door.
Never though of it as being a problem. I buy mine from amazon all the time and never blow up the driver 😆
Interested to see a few Supermotos !
Yea lots of nice bikes to see
Gas bottle was because of your tattooed hand its all on camara, dosent go with the bike your on probably?
Yea looks a bit sus 😝
No gas but a tank full of petrol is ok!
Yea strange rule
Never been to the TT, but i have been to the manx gp and classic manx gp in 2019 and it was brilliant on this same route, first trip was on my honda cb750k2 in 1975, next 3 trips was in van as i raced a td3 250 yamaha in 1976/1977, and a tz 250 in 1978, my last trip in 2019 was on my yamaha owo2 R7, never any dramas during the manx gp sailings, TT dose not appeal to me, just to busy, brilliant atmosphere and great weather for the manx made it magical, i just watch TT on tt+, ferries are way to expensive for what they are though, cheers.
I am hoping to go to Manx this year
Read your ticket. Any gas bottle is a danger but the less liquid the more gas makes it worse. The first time I went 1977 they took all petrol but about a pint each way. But at least I could ride on rather then be craned on. Of course then all road bikes had metal tanks. It was a case of IF a bike fell over on the boat the fuel could not spill and cause BIG problems. I did have a bike fall over once but it was caught and hung by the rope round the foot pegs and seat.
Maybe it does say no gas. Not great when you arrive at 11.30pm and camp sites don’t sell gas 😖
That same woman stopped me on the way back when i was going back to the uk and made me sit in a door way waiting at security so my father can walk me down the ferry ramp with my pushbike simply unneeded and crazy thats what i needed to do
Was you smuggling fairy dust 😆
@@theflyingyetti_666 only a little 😂
Trouble is if every bike has a gas bottle that's some boom, I used the cross channel ferries to Dunkirk and carried paint across to get my boat ship shape before taking it out of the storage shed. Would always disclose the paint to the ferry company. They would allot me a space near the open deck and lorries carrying restricted cargo.
I didn’t realise which is typical of me lol. I have wondered what the issue is as I get my gas from amazon and no delivery driver has been blown up (yet) 😆
@@theflyingyetti_666 A blow up on a ferry is a lot more serous than an Amazon van though I would not like to see that happen either.
It's not just the one can, it's what else happens with it. They worry about.
A couple of tips. You don't need to take a new and old gas bottle. You can refill almost empty bottles from new ones using an adapter. If you want to avoid gas then look at dual fuel burners and use petrol.
Thanks buddy 👍🏻
do they allow electric vehicles to travel?
I was just thinking that 🤔
Bloody hope not!! 😂
@theflyingyetti_666 I was wondering about Electric vehicles I'm a aspiring new motorcyclist and was thinking of getting a electric motorcycle
@@CoasterRobdon't do it!!!
As some of others viewers have said, petrol was pumped out, happened to me in '79 and '80. Don't know who kept the petrol though 🤔. The loading/unloading of the bikes are really chaotic though.
It’s not so bad now i guess
Remember in those days, there were also lots of 2 stroke motorcycles and before autolube systems, oil had to be mixed in the petrol tank. My Dad joked (as our tanks were being pumped out), that half the taxis in Liverpool would be smoking out 2 stroke from their exhaust for the next 6 months from this cheep fuel😃
It's not called the steam racket for nothing. That's a rediculous thing to do. I go abroad in the van and on a Vfr and always carry gas. Never had any problems and no one has ever asked.
Yea strange one about the gas bottles
I.O.M. is an independent Country F.Yeti so Customs +exise etc
True but what can you smuggle back
they use to swing your bike onin the 70s and drain your tank
Glad you don’t do that anymore 😝
Dont use Gas , Use fire blocks & stand
Can’t be arsed to do that in the morning just to make a coffee 👍🏻
That’s what we do on our island 🇮🇲🇮🇲🇮🇲
Not smuggling any fairy dust next year then 😁
Fek, Too many hand wavers 'this way no that way' & people who are just feckless & clueless and not knowing themselves what they are doing.
It does clearly state in your boarding instructions and on the ferry operators website no gas bottles 'for obvious safety reasons' without prior arrangement:
Can you take gas bottles on a ferry? Yes, but only by prior arrangement.
Yea I did read about the gas after I got home which is standard for me. Seems a bit ott as I buy them from amazon and have never blown up a driver. Plus I assume gas bottles have to pass safety checks. Rules are the rules I guess
B.M.W. comfortable SENSIBLE MACHINE are you taking the piss over rated over priced and £190 per hour service charges in some areas plus rip off prices for parts I DON'T THINK SO ??Sorry to sound negative but cant help myself having had one worst bike I have ever owned no question and no I am not the unlucky one ask around and you will find out for your self !!!!!!!!!
Had it 4.5 years, still loving it
Had mine 6 years, 40k miles, no bother at all...
@@theflyingyetti_666 well good for you but how much have you spent on it and be honest !
@@Berg501 again I say it how much have you spent on it and be honest please ?? Just like del boys Triggs broom only had 4 new handles and 6 new brushes ??
@@allanhughes7859 About £200-£250 a year on services. No breakdowns or breakages. Loads on tyres and quite a few brake pads.
Winge. Winge. Winging pom .
I didn’t winge about the breakfast 😆👍🏻
Kippers
😆
They're stupid you've got full tank of petrol and a confiscating gas canister
I am sure gas canisters have to pass some sort of safety test. I get them from amazon and have never blown up a amazon van yet 😆
Stupid advice telling people to hide their gas bottles. Read your ticket about prohibited items.
As if anyone would take notice of me 😆. Thanks for taking the time to comment, it all helps 👍🏻😁
No other ferry company I've ever been on has asked about gas bottles. Moterhomes at least 2 bottles, all lorry's carry gas cooker for the drivers. Cars going for camping holidays have them. Never a problem. Good advice, hide your gas.
All a load of bollocks they are not like that "the police" all they will say to you is this WE GIVE YOU THE MOUNTAIN TO PLAY ON SO GO AND PLAY BUT DO NOT DO NOT SPEED IN THE TOWN OR VILLAGES THATS ALL WE ASK and that is all they do ask so all this nonsense about how they teat folk is a load of bollocks !!!
People say they are really strict but I haven’t had any problems. I have spoke to a few and they were nice as you would expect
Don’t go there watch it
I love it there 😁
U should stayed home lol. Whole video yapping non stop
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Whinny whining
