How NOT to play "My Hero" by Foo Fighters
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 бер 2022
- I love the Foo Fighters' song "My Hero", but rather than try to copy it note for note, I'd rather take the idea behind how they recorded the drums and try to incorporate it into my home recording setup! Thank you Blair Sinta for the idea. Thank you Wil Anspach for being a guest on my channel and for your masterful engineering skills.
RIP Taylor Hawkins

How about a rap-rock cover of My Hero? That drum and bass are so powerful.
When you’ve officially gone too far down the rabbit hole on Taylor Hawkins death, you end up here.
Good video dude.
It’s absolutely heartbreaking that he’s gone.
@@JakeReedmusic I know this was done prior to his passing but this is a really nice tribute video. 💔
@@wantsomecoffee Thank you!
my entire feed is just foo fighters now and its sad
@@wantsomecoffee this track wasn't recorded by Taylor though.
Just came across this vid and enjoyed the hell out of it. RIP Taylor❤️
Of all the days this is in my recommended. Wonder why. The algorithm knows too much. Heartbreaking news.
It’s such a sad day. RIP.
As a drummer and an engineer, this was an awesome video. I really wish every 80s and 90s engineer would demystify things like this more often… mainly so I could stop getting clients who think every old record was just a band in a room with no dubs.
Thanks man! Dubs rule!
@@JakeReedmusic dubs and grooves, the unsung power couple of recording fat drums
LOL INDEED!
@@JakeReedmusic i jammed with will in a garage/ basement when i was in middle school. youtube is a weird place, never expected to randomly see him in a suggested video
@@matthewhaggerty2826 Amazing! Yes, youtube, the internet, it's all weird.
Let’s hear it for special guest Wil Anspach! WOOOO!
In an age where is really easy to record Midi drums and have a natural and organic feel to them, this kind of experiences are awesome af
Really cool video man! I’ve always loved that Grohl uses the space around him to get huge sounds. Also learned a lot about mixing drums in this. Thanks for making this!
Thank you! I learned a lot from Wil while making this video so it’s a win-win!
Yo - this is great to see the whole process. Will is the man. RIP Taylor
This is invaluable wisdom!! Randomly stumbled across. Instantly subbed. Both of you are great. Clearly a drummer who digs deep into sound/creation territory 👏🏼 and the engineer is a boss.
Thanks! Really appreciate the kind words!
"I only wanna pretend I AM the drummer..." That is exactly the reason to mix from drummer's perspective!
Totally!
I love it. The other way around always sounds backwards to me but it’s done quite a bit isn’t it?
basically every song i listen to mixes backwards and it irritates me to no end
also the drummer is the only person to hear the set in stereo
I agreed with the sentiment before and couldn't quite articulate it, but yeah, that's totally it. I only imagine myself drumming, and a hat on the right is super out of the ordinary. Doesn't mean it can't work, but I definitely feel at home with a regularly panning kit - all vsts do it by default anyway if you work in the box.
My dude! Love your videos. Have learned so much from you when it comes to tracking drums.
Yaaaay!!! Thanks man!
this hits different now
Indeed.
Great video. I’m a drummer that knows a teeny tiny bit about engineering, and I love this kind of material. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm in the same boat...a drummer pretending to be an engineer. I think there's probably a lot of us just because of how challenging it is to record drums. With guitar you just throw up a mic, or hell, just plug in direct and do an amp sim and it sounds halfway decent. You can't do that with drums. You have to have some engineering skills to be able to get a half way usable DIY drum recording.
Also, thanks Jake for making such good content!
Totally! There's a lot that goes into capturing usable drum recordings. I've been working on recording/mixing myself for 12 years now and still learn new things all of the time, which is the main reason I started making these videos when the pandemic hit. I just figured there were tons of drummers at home trying to figure out how to record themselves, since there were no live gigs happening at the time!
really fucking loved this video! what an unexpected treat. love learning new drum production techniques especially from song i'm already crazy about
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Man... ain't no one care about a kickass drum sound anymore. Thanks for doing the work.
This was a great insight into the production. I wouldn't have thought that the two different sounds would fit together but it works so well. Awesome work. I've subscribed
Thanks!
Love your videos Jake, I discovered your channel about a year ago and have loved every vid since ❤
That was seriously awesome! The garage drums sounded fantastic... kinda reminded me a bit of those early to mid 80's Steve Lillywhite's productions for bands like U2, Simple Minds or Big Country.
TOTALLY!
Gave me some flashbacks to my old drum clinics at CRAS, great captures!
I love that you ended with the side by side of the two kits! Great video, thanks for sharing!
Thank YOU for the kind words!
Super cool! I really like this idea of overdubbing drums in a different space, it seems like a pretty practical way to get a very interesting drum sound.
It’s so fun!
Dude you are awesome absolutely love your content and humor!
Thanks dude!
Jake Reed does it again! Super inspiring as always!
Thanks, Brian!
Just stumbled upon this video and learned more about mixing drums than any other video when recording and mixing my bands first album.
Sweet! Happy to help!
Liked and subscribed after hearing the comment about where the hi-hat should be in the mix. I. Couldn't. Agree. More! As a drummer while listening to song where the hi-hat is not in the middle or in the left, I feel like I just want to flip my headphones the other way around. And I have actually done that multiple times. Also encouraged by this, I'm going to start exclusively start mixing drums from the drummers perspective. People just have to deal with it. (And they probably will I mean, most won't even get the difference I suppose.) Also all the glory to left handed drummers!
HAHA! Thanks man! Yes, I used to do the same thing with the headphones, especially for transcribing!
Just started the video and loved the vibe dude!
Thanks man!
Good stuff as usual. Thanks Jake!
💪😎
Thank you!
I, too, stumbled upon the magical CLA-76 into J37 combo and it does wonders.
I didn't feel like watching a long video but goddamn it was worth it, the engineer guy really helped me trust my intuition and ears instead of looking for some hack or tricks
You play well on this. Great video, lots of fun to watch.
Thanks!
So cool the way you break this down and explained how to create this 'space' ! Great video
Thanks!
@@JakeReedmusic I'm in the middle of covering All My Life, using Garageband, but this was super helpful for future drum recordings
Came here because of my endless searching for all things Taylor since last Friday, stayed and sub'd because you are exactly the same kind of drummer and engineer as myself. Although I'm technically trained, I kind of just do my own thing outside of standard studio practices. It's much more interesting and creative that way. Good stuff, Jake.
Rad! Thanks dude! RIP Taylor Hawkins.
Amazing video! Learned a lot today. Thanks for that!
Yay! Happy to help!

Dude, that snare tuning is amazing!
Amen to drummer perspective. Also RIP to Taylor Hawkins. I think the algorithm gonna pump this video due to that.
It’s just so devastating. RIP.

when referring to the small Q on EQ moves, i think it's important to remember that you're going for a 90's mix. some of those small Q EQ adjustments can save a mix
This was just plain badassery! Fun stuff, thanks.
Ha! Thanks man!
Dave’s drumming on this song is amazing. My favorite foos drum track! Rip Taylor 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Totally amazing! Complete legendary status. RIP Taylor Hawkins.
Yesss! New video!
Woooo!!!
Love the video!
The comment from the engineer at 8:38 things should be from DRUMMER perspective is so TRUE.
My son actually commented (he is a drummer) that studio albums should be from musicians perspective, live albums from Audience perspective.
Thanks!

How in heaping beans did that low-pass filter make such a gigantic difference on the feel. Good grief. Magic.

There's also an interview on produce like a pro with the mix engineer, Dave specifically requested no compression to be used. So he used tons of eq bussing on the drums. Not saying you should do that but super interesting.
AMAZING!
I feel like we had to use compression to get close to the size of that parking garage in my tiny garage 😂
Yea totally! I know I'm not judging.

i love how you edit your videos it's really funny
Thanks!
Hey Jake, your videos are always full of info...thanks!
About the panning perspective....I started to pan like the drummer perspective, and for audio propose I think is the best, but when I'm watching videos, and the camera is always on the front, the image does not goes well with the drummer perspective and my brain start to flick...so I think is a tough decision to make...mix for the audio or mix for the video...
Thanks! And, yes, video is a different beast even though I totally did it backwards here haha!
ur videos r such high quality
Thank you!
I appreciated you saying funzies - great videos btw!
Thank you!
8:40 IMO This is especially and issue when drummers mix the drums. For them/myself it makes more sense to have the hi-hat on the left side, just like they hear the drums on their headphones when tracking. But think again of the other 99% people that don't play drums and most likely imagine watching a band perform on stage. But I have the ultimate solution for all of us: It doesn't really matter which way you do it because the drummer could always be left/right handed to justify your mix choices :D. Or if the song/album is called "mirrors", "reflections", etc. in which this can the concept anyway ;-)
HAHA! Love it! This should be the primary question of the whole video. Drummer perspective or audience perspective?
@@JakeReedmusic My take is if you're not a drummer you probably don't know/care where the hat or floor tom is, so you may as well do it drummer perspective and everyone's happy that way
@@JakeReedmusic But why reduce it to the drums? The bass amp should be recorded binaural with the mics being at head height and the amp standing on the floor blowing your pants off. So the listener will now hear what it really sounds like 😂.. like low-end rumble without any details..
I'm with you - as a drummer, I mixed this way for the longest time but then once I started working on live performances, it looked really weird seeing someone go across the toms L to R but hear R to L. Many classic albums are either, too... just as you said it doesn't really matter haha. Just go with whatever you think sounds best!
@@Noiseheads very true! Live is a different animal!
Fantastic video! Thanks! 😘
Thank YOU!
@@JakeReedmusic no! Thank YOU! 😉
rest in peace man :(
The first 30 seconds hooked me
Yaaaay!!!
6:22 that drum tone sounds so much like the acoustic drums on Eraser by Nine Inch Nails
Those garage tom overdubs had a serious "Bonzo's Montreux" vibe going on.
Totally! Also, playing 1/8 notes at 156 bpm for that long with both hands at triple forte was a lot more tiring than I thought it would be 😂
You're my favorite 70's sherpa denim jack dad
LOL Thanks!
Love this, Jake! I was told to come check you out and was not disappointed!
Sweet! Thanks dude! Happy to not disappoint lol!
That was pretty cool

I’M BACK!
As a left-handed drummer, 8:30 hurts 😔 sorry for being weird.
Hahaha! Not weird at all. I mean ... think of Phil Collins. He played perhaps the most famous drum fill of all time and is left handed. We should be listening to how THOSE drums are panned!
This was so interesting!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
RIP taylor hawkins you legend
Good tapedecks could reproduce up to 22khz back in the day. Nakamichi Dragon / ZX7-9 or Teac v8030:)
Guess the Algorithm knows what's what, Godspeed Taylor Hawkins
😢
Great video. I don't see you wearing headphones or in-ears. Were you listening to the original track as you were laying down both grooves? The timing was excellent.
Thanks! I'm wearing in-ears and playing to a click. Didn't want to copy the original so I bumped the tempo up by 2 BPM. Super fun and a fun challenge to play something different and try to remember it!
Great drummer, kit and engineer. I’m a mixing engineer and that sounds great
Thanks!
Sweet gretch vintage drums! Where did you find those bad boys!
Thanks! The 50s Gretsch was a lucky find here in LA and the 60s gold satin flame I got from Peter Erskine, who was my teacher at the time. Fun fact: it’s the same kit he used on the Pink Panther 2 soundtrack!
Rip Taylor Hawkins.
Great video ❤
RIP. Thank you!
@@JakeReedmusic you are most welcome
I still can’t believe Taylor is gone! :(
So sad ... RIP.
(I always knew that this song wasn't actually playable by one person if you wanted to play true to record form, but I never knew why. Just like "Welcome to Paradise" by Greenday. No way one person can play that all at once, but I never knew what the trick was behind getting those sounds that way. Dope trivia!)
8:21 I dunno man, I think that's a personal perspective thing. LIke, not that music has to include everyone all the time, but what about left handed drummers? I bet they feel the exact opposite on almost every song mixed this way. But moreover, my favorite band has a left handed drummer, his hi-hat is on the right. I wonder if they master with slight direction as well, but in the opposite direction becuase he's left handed.
I wonder if that influenced my ear at all when listening, if I like anything more or less because of it. I've never put much thought into how much post-production might radicalize sounds of music, or moreover how much that might be what makes someone like it.
These situations are exactly why as a kid I thought I sucked at music. And maybe I still do-but “they” (recordings) play tricks on our ears and most people can’t even tell. It took me years to figure out why me live playing something doesn’t sound like the radio. Now a days it’s even worse.
RIP TAYLOR ❤️
5:15 Look at those playing zones. Good lord.
😂😂😂
So informative😁
Thanks!

Woohoo!!!
Nice work.. What drums are yours... Thanks
These are all Gretsch drums. Some old and some new.

Audience perspective is for, well, an audience. Ain't no audience in a studio 😂 killer job man I'm gonna have to try this out. Also I'm bettin if you did close mic'd toms as well on your tight track, you'd get even more eerily close to the album sound
Thanks! We were trying to stay true to the original in the sense of only using room mics in the garage. No close mics allowed! haha!
@@JakeReedmusic damn didn't realize the original is just room sound on the toms. Time to find myself a big ol garage
@@joshuaireland5510 yeah! It's pretty amazing stuff!
1000% agree with the drums being from the drummer perspective. I hate audience perspective so much haha

Don't be like that man, just because you love a band doesn't mean you follow their news day to day.
