Charlie Benante- Dave Grohl plays my kit and a ittle bit of Nirvana 🩷 (scentless apprentice)

- We were recording at 606 studio and Dave came in to give a burst of energy and to say Hello. He checked out my kit and I couldn’t resist asking him to play one of my favorite drum intros … “ scentless apprentice”.
This room sounds so good, I loved recording here. Let’s do it again soon! BTW- that's my Signature Snare from TAMA
#anthrax #foofighters #davegrohl #nirvana #tamadrums #paistecymbals
I’m shocked Dave jumped into scentless apprentice like that. Love it! He seems to be embracing his nirvana legacy a bit more lately and I’m thankful for it
Charlie ask him to do it. 0:54
Maybe cause he wrote it and he’s more comfortable to jump right into it.
@@EvilChiId For Scentless Apprentice, Dave wrote the drum and guitar riff. Check out this interview where Kurt is talking about it:
ua-cam.com/users/clipUgkxti2dSDiWtId9YwKe06O-hC9GrS4SqFpn?si=vfl3BHiGcjCuDmxK
It's not like he has ever denied it
@@EvilChiId Wrong. Dave wrote most the music for Scentless Apprentice. Kurt even says in interviews that it was a boneheaded riff that Dave came up with.
Dave Grohl is like the golden retriever of music. He's always 10/10 stoked.
Such a good analogy lol
Lol. Yes! I think he'd agree 😂
The Mr. Peanut Butter of the drums.
Because he actually likes music im happy his passion hasn't burned out
Perfect description is perfect.
That kit sounds so good
Fr even just through the phone mic. But, let's not forget that the room they're in is at least a third of the great sound.
Funny I was thinking just the opposite........ Everything's muffled to the point that there's no tone left in almost any of the drums...... But that's his studio set up i'm sure he doesn't play live with that
@@boblogiii8869remember, when you're tracking drums for anything in the "heavy" realm you can always add more room in post but you can't really take it away easily or naturally.
Would sound better with a ride cymbal..I mean 🤷 come on ! Lol
@@boblogiii8869yes. It sounds good for tight music like fusion jazz and stuff but it does NOT sound good for heavy ass music/songs like Nirvana. As far as I’m concerned. Milk it would sound like shit with that drum sound.
If Dave Grohl played scentless apprentice on my drum set, I'd probably cry
Might be the first time I’ve seen Dave play a double bass drum set up. Thanks for capturing this moment; he looks like a kid in a toy store on that huge kit.
Hey it's you!
listen to his Probot album!!! he does most of the instruments at the drums are killer double-bass metal shit!
@@volutedmetal8543school by nirvana have double bass part. Like triplet notes
And he curiously forgot how to play drums. What happened there.
@@robertcadiz4346he was casually farting around on someone else’s kit
I love that Charlie asks him to play Scentless Apprentice. That intro is so killer. 🤘
Yeah, and he asks it like a kid asking for icecream or something, so sweet
Scentless Apprentice, followed by Song For The Dead!!! Amazing
Deaf
@@jr2904Deaf is the album. Dead is the song.
@@Misteryowl”song for the dead,” and “song for the deaf” are on the album “Songs For The Deaf” there’s even a secret track “real song for the deaf” that’s only on the CD version.
@@wickharr4416 I'm so sorry. I wasn't aware of that. Love you
Room sounds deadly even on phone mic.
That is one perfectly tuned kit. Those heads are so crisp. Love it.

Dave is such a humble dude. No ego. Just a an ordinary fella despite being the most famous bloke on the planet coupled with having multi millions of dollars. Huge respect
yea untill he pushed a leaky vaxxx on ppl to see his shows.
He has a MASSSSSIVE ego
@@kevinpluck_Warlordwhy?
His play double kick very good, Waaaow amazing
Mad respect for Dave 👊🤘
Dave's great-I met him while we were playing at the Terminal in Dallas, we were doing our soundcheck. This was around 93 or 94.
He came up and talked to me when we finished, I had no idea who he was, he was with a guy that was about 6'5, and a blonde haired lady.
They looked like locals, had a shit eating grin on their faces while we were playing.
Really nice folks, Dave introduced himself, but never said anything about being a drummer,
I finally realized who he was when I saw them on the MTV unplugged show, and nearly fell over.
I doubt he remembers that, it may have been the night they played at the Trees, which was across the street.
I had a New Orleans Saints shirt on, I remember him asking me if I was from there, told him I was from South Mississippi, right around the corner.
Fun times.
Hope he winds up in Rush.
Cool story. I met Kurt in Chicago right after they played a show. There was a donut shop a few buildings from the gig and Kurt was just standing there. Nobody recognized him and I walked up and we just started talking about different stuff. He enjoyed it because I didn't act star struck or as a fan. Just two people talking. Before we parted he handed me a pair of sunglasses he had in his shirt pocket. The funny part was it was late at night and yes I still have them to this day. Peace.
the people who he was with might have been thurston moore and kim gordon from sonic youth - you should check.
I live near Dallas & play in a band that’s been wantto play in trees forever since Nirvana played there we’ll get there someday
I need more than 1:30 minutes of Dave playing those big drums.
This is fantastic, Charlie!

Dave plays with great energy and solid backbeats like a real rock drummer.
He even looks like the guy that played for Nirvana 😝
@@kittywampusdrums4963 nah I think it was that other guy
What a Chad@@c0hink176
You can tell he probably hadn't played Scentless Apprentice for 30 years but he could still figure it out
He did a few "reunion" gigs with Pat and Krist not too many years back where they played Scentless Apprentice, but yeah, probably not a drum riff he runs through on the regular.
Krist said he and Dave had all alone drum and bass Nirvana sessions a thousand times since Kurt"s passing.
@@nvsoliveiraReally? Never heard about that. Not doubting your comment, just asking.
I still dream they would some sort of super-reunion with different singers...and maybe one guitar player that totally nails Kurt's sound. There are dozens here on UA-cam. Well, I could, too 😂
dave doing double bass is awesome 😂
Scentless apprentice has one of the best drums intro ever made… simple but unique…
Dave Grohl always sounds like Dave Grohl no matter the kit ♥
Not always:
Dave is great at playing BIG and LOUD and SOLID.
But he once played "At Seventeen" - a folky jazz ballad - with his daughter Violet, and was clearly having trouble with with music that resisted being played BIG and LOUD and SOLID.
@@Baribrotzerso he sounded like Dave Grohl
@@Baribrotzer What I meant was, when DG plays DG (and yeah, that's big and loud!), it doesn't matter whether it's his original Tama 4 piece, CB's behemoth kit here, or on a child's kit (there's a video of this somewhere). He always sounds like himself. When he does the Hanukkah videos, he reigns in the big and loud and still sounds like DG 🤘
@@BaribrotzerNirvana did an Unplugged you know
Would have liked to hear Dave mess around on this kit for a while longer.
Scentless Apprentice is one of those groves that even people who are new and have never played drums before might try when they first sit down at a kit.
Dave doing double kick is awesome.
He’s a machine
I love that the 4th lick is Neil Peart …no drummer can resist a good Rush fill!
Knew that was 'Digital Man' from Signals as soon as I heard it. The guitars came in, in my mind lol.
His best work is on that queens of the Stone age album imo
I think he did a great job too on the 2003 Killing Joke album, even though he's kept his own unmistakable style and not sounding anything like Paul Ferguson.
I think Them Crooked Vultures was some of his best drum work, jmo.
Senseless apprentice is one of my favorite nirvana songs. It's almost as good as scentless apprentice
Love when as soon as Dave hears the kicks, "woah", as in, God, this sounds beautiful
🤘🏼
Dave's dynamics are ionic. The way he hit the drums is undeniable. ❤🤟
Not for me. Dave just hit the drums as hard as he can. He is a good rock drummer and that is it. Don’t get me wrong he’s a good drummer but he is nowhere near one of the best.👍
@@ledgebetter But he made millions of dollars from his drumming/ other talents and created jobs to hundreds of families. That's how I look at success!! There's a lot of better drummers than him yes but most of them are plying drums in their basement. There is always a better drummer than this drummer or that one in life.
Two legends ❤
Seeing THE Dave Grohl sit down at a kit and kinda go, "What the fuck?" makes me feel a whole lot better about myself
love the tone of that snare drum
Awesome! Dave is amazing, I feel blessed that I seen Nirvana In Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens November 4th 1993, rewind 2 years earlier I seen The mighty Anthrax open for Iron Maiden January 18th 1991 at Maple Leaf Gardens, and Metallica November 14 1991..I can't explain how fuckin amazing that is !! Haha , kids now don't realize what real music is or was back than, and should appreciate real talent ! 👏 thanks Charlie, you're one of my favorite drummer's of all time! In my top 5 with Alex VH , Bonham , Paice and Copeland
That drum is gorgeous, can't wait to have the new album . Horns up Charlie , you're the best 🤘👽🤘

can't wait to hear the new album!
Sounds like the beginning of “Digital Man” by Rush for a bit
That’s what I thought too!
The Paiste Rude is my all time favorite cymbal. It's so full and deep and such a refined tone.
I’d give my left nuts for just those Rudes!
Never really got into them myself but for punishment they def will take it.
Same here. They're great. More versatile than what they are known for.
They've got some of the wildest overtones, but are still musical. It's a unique product.
That snare ❤ x

Love the kit! You've been a huge inspiration since I started playing in the early 90s. Thanks for posting Charlie!
i LOVE Scentless Apprentice but hearing him kick into that intro from QOTSA's Song For The Dead (which pays homage to Black Flag's 'Slip It In' in the last few snare rolls) at the end was like a shot of adrenaline
Sounds amazing
WHOA THAT sounds amazing
Ahh what a world
The kit sounds great. Grohl's the man
I could sit there all day and watch dave mess around on a kit.
0:15 sounds like "Digital Man" of Rush
That’s the most wholesome thing I’ll see today ☺️
Beautiful kit!

He started into Song for the Dead. Such a fucking great song. 1:21
Dave hasn’t lost his touch.
I once saw Dave at a parking lot in Long Beach for a Static X, Slayer, and Pantera show. So glad to see he has an appreciation for metal too.

I fucking love dave 🥺
Santa needs to give Dave a double pedal…it took him decades but he finally embraced double bass.
He doesn’t need it.
Just when I thought that song was badass seeing him play just makes even better
I love DG with all my ❤🥁
that snare 🤤
*ABSOLUTE LOVE THE 414'S ON THE TOMS!!!* 🫡🤘🏼
Love that he busted out the beat to Scentless Apprentice. Probably my favorite Nirvana drum song (along with Drain You).
