2023-08-26 Ramana Maharshi Foundation UK: Why is this entire world as unreal as a dream?

- In a Zoom meeting with the Ramana Maharshi Foundation UK on 26th August 2023, Michael answers various questions about Bhagavan’s teachings.
The first question Michael answered was:
"My question is related to the apparent reality of the world, as experienced in our waking state; Bhagavan's teachings say that our so-called reality in fact is a dream, projected by ourselves. From an intellectual level I can relate to this when I look at the world and its inhabitants as being a collective of apparent individual entities, whereas in fact it's the one (Brahman) playing out the script we call life and erroneously take to be something 'happening' to us as an individual.
Also, I think to understand the role the ego plays in this through our identification with the body, mistakingly making us believe to be ‘one amongst many’.
In all multiplicity that appears to be, where I seem to get stuck in my understanding, is:
a. how literally we should take life to be a dream?
b. and what can be called real in the apparent dream-like individual life?
1. Is it that (the sense of) individuality by definition is dualistic and therefore unreal, thus: a dream? For instance my neighbour will have a slightly different viewing point in looking at the world since his locality is slightly different. When my neighbour is merely a dream character projected by me, he actually doesn't exist at all, along with all wars, disease, the seasons, bodies, plants, volcanic eruptions, planets, entities etc etc. Can we conclude that these do actually not exist, hence, making all interpersonal dynamics in our lives unreal as well?
2. Or should we take the dreamlike waking state in a more metaphorical sense, so that the multiplicity of bodies seemingly exists because of the identification with our bodies and therefore mistakingly experienced as ’individuals’, forming a multiplicity of realities, limited in their nature, therefore arbitrary and impossible to be taken for ‘real’?
3. Or is it to be taken as a dream due to the impermanent nature of the world we see as defined in Advaita Vedanta as “Things that are changing, perceived and impermanent are unreal”?
4. Or a dream because of the fact that we can practically make up any narrative or world-view we like, creating the world as a projection made up by our (ever restlessly outgoing) mind?
5. Or a dream in the sense that all is predestined and we erroneously believe ourselves to be the doer or actor in the projected life we live?
This, I find rather confusing to comprehend and sometimes difficult to deal with.

Thank you! This is beyond wonderful! Gratitude for this exquisite logic and clarity that I found nowhere else.
Thank You! 🙏
Very very deep and clear. Thank you very much🌹🌹.
Ego is born when I identify as this body!
Ego rises only when I am inclined to perceive it cx
Thanks so much for sharing meetings on UA-cam. I’m listening live on the meeting but I still want to listen to it again on UA-cam.

Thank you so much for this clarification. It makes a huge difference. It's quite a relief to finally hear that Brahman isn't projecting the world, but that it's the one ego. I love the absoluteness, clarity, and pristine logic that is presented here. There is so much confusion with other advaita teachings/teachers.
Sounds like the ego is the satan vs. godhead; he's there but why did godhead allow him. I thought the ego was an illusion, so doesn't that make Brahman responsible? If the ego were other than Brahman, would that not limit Brahman to everything except the ego?
Very nicely explained. Thank you Michael ji..🙏
Thank you Michael! 🙏💛
🙏
Thank you, Michael, for such a clear and deep elaboration on this important topic 🙏🙏

Apart from Awareness nothing,~ no thing,~ exists. And to know that, Awareness assumed things to exist, only to find out they dont. Awareness now is aware of Awareness (itSelf) only. Which is Bliss. Sat chit ananda💎
Awareness is I, alone, existing blissfully cx
We are the being, nothingness, alone.
Blissfully aware not being the five sheafs.
I am now existing & conscious. I am not the body,I am not the intellect. I am not the known, Im not the will I am not the ego.
Ego appears to be everything here, now.
When the ego appears nothing appears to be otherness. I seems to be awake here, now. Nothing appears or disappear. Nothing will be always alone pure perfection. cx

ego never rose you are not real person.
So how did you get here? & who thinks I is here
Only people can investigate self!
How do people become inhabitants on the world on which you live? cx

Who is asking the question who am I if ego has not risen? cx
🙏🙏🌺🌺
Gratitude
2:32:21 the idea and the thought I am, ego has it. I am is the love of self, wrongly focused on knowing the imagined other. cx

All actions and activity happen in this place where we are human.
To escape Samsara we must realise what is and what is not real.
To know reality we must let go of all that is false. Everything we see, hear smell taste and touch is unreal. The desires of the senses are poison and lead us away from our true self and stillness. cx
Where we shall Be, we will not know; knowing is with the mind, we shall leave all that behind , knowing is not allowed in Being ..the mind can not enter that Bliss, thats why it cannot be explained only experienced❤
Nothing shall be known or unknown, where being now is nothing.
happiness, being awareness alone is I. cx
Am I absolute pure, perfection always unchanging, prior ego
Or am I always body bound cx
In this dream, reality actually seems real. When did ego rise up? What slept, and who seemingly woke up ? cx
I almost died from drowning and suffocation a few times in my life. I’ve travelled to Ramana Ashram in Thiru a dozen times and I’ve been studying Ramana for years. One thing I can tell you for sure is that you are definitely the body when confronted with a lack of oxygen.
That shows the power of belief.
@@sandycarter5300 nothing I said was a belief
Maybe one solution to the ego rising once. Once ego rises matter exists. Once i say ego life will mind body or senses. Thinking I am born I question my inner guru. cx

I have a question. Bhagwan could read and write and see and interact with his devotees so does that not mean that the world existed for him even after self realisation? Please answer
how much did ramana maharshi meditate before he attained enlightenment? the time he felt like he was going to die exp

the only thing known is made up. what it is that makes it up is unknown. that, you are. 💎 Absolute Formless Eternal Emptiness.
@@johnmcdonald260you are still lost in your dream
@@johnmcdonald260 you know that there's reality. But choose to see the illusionary cx
Sorry, but the question "why" always points to a belief system!
Why would anybody get a new, or an old belief system instead of the eternal truth which uncovers only in silence?
Ramana Maharshi turns in his grave...
Not clear on how Brahman/ego is not duality. Ego is unreal. OK. If it's unreal altogether then why bring it up? Why make up a non-existent other to explain the world, also unreal? Is there not real and unreal then? At least as a distinction? Unreal does not exist. OK. How about real/unreal distinction? If Absolute is real, then mustn't non-existence also exist as a distinction? Reminds me of Adam and Eve and how they were told not to eat of the tree of knowledge, of duality. If nothing is gained by the introduction of duality, how to explain the magnitude of this error? Why would something totally unnecessary occur? Is this all a show about nothing? Further, what sense does it make to say the omniscient Self "forgets" itself? Um, omniscient....
