I am old enough to have used ORWO NP15, NP22 and NP27 before the Wall fell. The worst you could say of the films was that you needed a hardening fixer to reduce the chance of scratches.
@erwindegroot8760 Yes, sound recording is in motion picture films Kodak's catalogue. I know it so well, I have a 1000ft can. It's a ultra high contrast film, almost lithographic film. Kodak doesn't publish ISO values for it, but it's around 6 o 12, but you can expose it to 50. With normal development, it's very contrast. Low contrast developers o stand develop improved tonal grade, but it's always high contrast. Used on cloudy days and developed with caffenol, I have had the best results.
Loong time ago someone brought to the photo club a film labelled as "Kodak Surveillance" marked as 25 ISO. It gave very high contrast negatives and a very fine grain. Could it be the same type of film?
The same happened to me on my *first* order with Aliexpress, and after days of waiting on customer support, their explanation was, "That should not have happened."
They sell the Vibe film at my local camera store (Montreal), so I'm happy to see how good it is. You're lucky as I was expecting them to sell some "desert fresh" rolls.
hey there. Gosselin isn't the greatest as a place to buy film... every once in a while they'll have a sale, but otherwise meh. depending on where you are on the island, i'd highly recommend going to Studio Argentique and buying ReflxLab if you're interested in that Vibe company. it's just Kodak Vision3 film with remjet layer removed. ReflxLab have both Tungsten and Daylight balanced stocks and for like 4-5$ cheaper. AND more exposures. their 800T is 36exp at $18.99.
Loving the look of My Heart. Don't think the King Mono worked for busy football stadium shots but I'm sure you could find an arty application for it like portrait. If all else fails I reckon you could get a job as a pundit as your match narration was on point! Great video, thank you.
My Heart and Vibe are great films, ive tried both of them with awesome results. The My Heart i used was 250D Vision 3 by the way, so ECN. Ive used SHD 400 amd its a real contrasty film, i think it may be surveilance film, but ive shot two rolls and i realy dig the look, depends on what you looking for. Overall all these are great, except i havent tried the Mono films.
While Aliexpress packages used to take ages to arrive, it's almost always about a week now. They're mostly delivered by Evri though, so there's a good chance they'll just dump it on the floor outside your door without knocking.
Your king mono results could be improved by going for a super long exposure with a small aperture at wide angle as this will give this a smooth image with barely any grain and a lot of motion blur! Best used for like costal landscapes or rivers or like a busy street with interesting architecture! I think it was hampered by your aperture! Giving you that under and overexposed look and stopping it getting any detail with underexposed areas where there wasn’t focus you could try a stop below even 50 ISO if you’re shooting this again.
Thanks for taking one for the team. Always wandered if these films where actually ok/are even real film. Would be interesting where they source theyr stuff from because it has to be from either Kodak, Harman, Noviscote or Ferramia. Kind of weird how they get it so cheap.
There was actually a small line in red said "Welcome deal for 1 item only", so in fact the -81% discount only applied on the last item, well for the other items you've still got about -50%, that's aliexpress speculate power !
I shot My Heart/Super Lucky film in the past when I needed a stop gap film that didn't break the bank and there were shortages of kentmere and other economy b/w, never had bad results. Honestly any stock that produces any kind of usable image is good in my book. Even that Kingmono could be used if the application is correct. Probably an old doubling film stock from back in the day.
the prices were different because if you’d notice, at the top it says “welcome deal” so your getting a really good deal on the first item you purchase. you got that welcome deal on the $1.20 film.
I had some Lucky SHD100 film in the fridge that had expired 8-10 years ago. When I decided to test a camera I had repaired myself, I used this film, and it performed beautifully. The only issue I encountered was with the film’s plastic substrate-it had a strong smell, reminiscent of cheap plastic, and was slightly thicker than what you’d find with Kodak or Ilford films. Additionally, it tended to curl slightly along its length, like a screw. Despite these quirks, the grain, tone, and exposure levels were excellent. also Back when my cousin and I were kids learning photography and film development, we used to buy bulk rolls of Kodak film-100 feet at a time-from dodgy shops. Those films often had a very high-contrast, almost lomographic black-and-white look, with little to no gray tones, quite similar to the mono 50 film you got. If I recall correctly, some batches had the Kodak name printed on the film but no exposure numbers. Occasionally, we’d even come across film labeled as “Kodak X-ray” or just “X-ray.” It’s been a long time, so the details are a bit hazy, but those were interesting days experimenting with such unconventional finds!
The vibe film looked great for the money as did the my heart film. Good to know you can get good cheap alternatives to just play around with, especially when you’re fairly new to shooting film and don’t necessarily want to fork out loads of money on good film!
Hi, Miles! Fantastic video! I think this is the first one to pop up in my feed since I found this channel. Love your work. It was cool to find someone shooting film at a pro level like this, and what's more... you use my favorite 35mm camera (the F-1)! Super cool! Best of luck with your channel. =)
You just got a new subscriber! I am not right now into photographing but I must keep my 20 film cameras clicking every now and then. When I have been looking for film on AliX I have only found films with 8 frames. PS.No King Mono film on AliX when I checked right now.☹️
I liked the my heart 100. Almost had a very ‘historic’ look to it which is very cool. I think i may pick up some after I’m done with my current ilford just for kicks
The vibe 400 and 800 look really nice. I really didn’t expect that. You can’t go wrong with this one considering the price. But I hope the quality is consistent.
That "King Mono" is film intended for recording optical sound, it was never intended for photographic images. Some people probably use it as an artistic choice but it was never going to be suitable for football. The rest all look decent.
The pricing has to do with a "welcome deal" for a first time purchase, it only applies to a single item (typically about $5 off) thus the price increase at checkout for some of them. Since you have affiliate links, surprised you wouldn't be more familiar with the platform.
hello, I just discovered your channel, thanks to automatic translation, I am French, and it is easier for me to watch the video in French. Your subject is very interesting, as you say in the conclusion, the king 50 is terrible in my opinion, the rest of the films are not bad. Bravo for this video, I had a great time and I discovered the world of cheap film, so I'm going to dig into the subject.

I was waiting for this video as in another one you already mentioned you will experiment with these films. My Heart and Vibe don't look too bad to be honest. Question is if they are worth the price for the limited number of expos (18 and 27 really?) and the currency exchange as the money in my country (Hungary) is horrendous these days. 😂
The welcome discount only applies to ONE ITEM in your cart. That’s why you saw a price difference. If you have an account you accumulate coins for orders. The more coins = the bigger discount.
King Mono apparently means monotone. It's either black or white, no in-between. But hey, if you want your photos to look like Banksy graffiti, who am I to judge?
Hello! All Aliexpress films look surprisingly good, even King Mono looks somewhat interesting, but that film is definitely not suitable to be used in this role, it is more for some artistic photos, that film reminds me of Film Washi S 50!
As a Nikon shooter im so curious about your Canon F1. Does that lens have an aperture ring or is it electric and you just use it wide open? Modern F mount nikon lenses need a ring to use on the old manual SLRs curious if its the same with Canon. Love the set up and the channel. Cheers!
Wow! The cost. You could probably buy a decent DSLR or Mirrorless for the cost of the film and processing, but that wasn't the point. Thanks for the fun and effort. Never been to a soccer game.
@NJPurling It was just Aliexpress giving a 'welcome' good first price. The Lucky SHD 100 is £14.79 for three rolls roll, + VAT = £17.74 inc free delivery (£5.91 per roll) 3 rolls of Ilford FP4+ is £23.25 from Nick & Trick. Add postage, brings it to £28.05 (£9.35 per roll) 3 rolls of Ilford Kentmere 400 is £16.50, add VAT & postage, brings it to £21.15 (£7.05 per roll) So only a saving of £1.33 per film from Ilford Kentmere to an unknown Chinese film. if buying SHD100 in +12 quantity, price falls to £4.29 + VAT = £5.15 per roll. (£5.15 per roll)
I hear Five Below has the crappiest film. The heart black and white film was like wow. The blacks were very rich and the color film you used after that the colors were very saturated and then the King Mono film. The photos looked like xrays. I am always looking for new and different films to use to get different looks and styles for my art shows. I have a ton of expired film in my fridge to use.
Well I can do most of my own B&W film processing as long as the chemistry is fairly standard. As for color film that is another issue. If the lab does not ‘now which process to use to develop it the could wind up ruining the film.
I'm guessing that in their indomitable logic, "black and white colour" is what you'd call monochrome rather than, say, red colour or green colour. I have to say that the My HEart 100 looks fabulous. :) Who knew??? :)
The cheap 8 exposure rolls are the most cost effective way I've found to test unknown cameras I've bought impulsively from eBay for light leaks
developing film at home can be handy because you can choose the amount of photos to shoot
Impulsive ebay purchases? Uhm...
Which rolls do you mean?
@@cncshropsuhm?
The My Heart 100 film has great tonality! With some Rodinal, the results could look quite iconic, like old Orwo NP22. Thanks a lot for your video!

The King Mono is probably Kodak sound recording film. A high contrast film for recording optical soundtracks on movie film.
I'm pretty sure of it too.
I saw this King Mono also at some Dutch stores, they all say it's Kodak b/w cine film.
@erwindegroot8760 Yes, sound recording is in motion picture films Kodak's catalogue.

3 rolls of Ilford FP4+ is £23.25 from Nick & Trick. Add postage, brings it to £28.05 (£9.35 per roll)
3 rolls of Ilford Kentmere 400 is £16.50, add VAT & postage, brings it to £21.15 (£7.05 per roll)
