I have not played FF13, but I've listened to it's battle theme countless times, which is more than I can say about the other battle themes of Final Fantasy. Besides that, 6-9's battle themes will always hold a special place in my heart since they're the FF games I grew up with.
I do like the soundtrack to FF13 (all three games) and I love playing all three FF13 games. I think they are great. They keep alot of traditional FF stuff while adding new stuff. I seriously don't understand the negativity toward the FF13 games.
@@michaelkarlsson5966 I feel like people just band wagoned hate for ff13 and complained it was linear for the first couple hours even though the other half is just as open as previous ff games. The battle system was arguably the best in the series alongside ffx and the soundtrack was top tier.
I personnaly don't considere FFXII has a battle theme, all the themes are area/exploration theme. That said my personnal ranking (excluding MMO cause I don't play MMOs so top 13, and including XVI since it has been release since this video), just want to precise that maybe outside of the one I rank last I think all these tracks are at least good. 13 - FFIII : Yeah just not feeling this one, I don't know, I don't hate it but I don't like it either, it just doesn't pump me, I also think it doesn't have a lot going for it in term of build up and climax (the loop is actually pretty short). 12 - FFI : The classic but also really feel it's the first one, my only feeling is it does the job and is better than III. 11 - FFVI : Yeah that one is a let down for me, sucks cause I love FFVI soundtrack, but I just think the battle them is lacking. 10 - FFII : Didn't like it at first, honnestly thought originally it was the worst, but relistening to it I appreciate it. 9 - FFVIII : That one really pains me, I think FFVIII has the best collection of battle themes out of all the FF composed by Nobuo Uematsu, and sadly my least favorite is the one you hear the most, honnestly my low ranking of this one and FFVI's might definitly be bias more because of these theme lacking compare to the rest of their game battle tracks than their actually quality tough. 8 - FFV : I like this one, but my issue is I think is too short, and fun fact I did compare why I had this feeling, turns out this is the shortest battle theme in the entire series before it loop and it's not even close, still a good theme that goes with battle well tough. 7 - FFIV : This is my favourite out of all the 2D ones, I just love the fact it's both epic and dramatic which is line with the theme of the game. (Note : Honnestly the Top 6 are all great, and outside of number 1 I could see myself changing their order depending of my feeling at the moment) 6 - FFXIII : Really strong music, I just love how it slowly build up, and then become super intense at the climax, this is probably the most popular track of the game and it's for a reason. 5 - FFXV : I go with Stand Your Ground personnaly, I honnestly really don't like FFXV but if there is one thing it does absolutly right it's the music, from start to finish this track is intense and really burst your adrenaline, and in all honnestly it manage alone to make this game otherwise boring mob fight somewhat enjoyable. 4 - FFXVI (PS : would be interest to hear how you would rank this one now) : So fun fact the opposite of FFV this is the longest battle theme in the series, and this is a music I would describe as the most complete, the intro is reminescent of the old school battle theme putting you right away in the battle, it builds up and become more intense, then goes in a more sad tone while still gaining intensity and then for the last part switch to a more soft almost peacefull track which I found really beautifull, and funny enough I won't go into spoiler but somehow this track reflect well Clive's evolution during the game I think, tough I might go to deep into that ^^. 3 - FFIX : Yeah I know it's a fan favorite, and I really love it, my simple way of describe it is it's basically what I wish FFV battle theme was, it's a great hommage as an all to old school battle theme, being closer to FFV's one, but unlike FFV's I think this track is just more rich, and more enjoyable to listen as an all. 2 - FFX : This theme just rocks, what else can I say ? I honnestly not really able to express why but there is just something about that makes me loves it more than FFIX, the way it sound the way it build up and after it climax nicely tone down before looping, I just like this music but suck at explaining why. 1 - FFVII : What can I say that haven't been said about this music ? Another fan favourite and as you can see I think it's totally deserve, honnestly it's so good this could legit be a boss theme (in fact it kind of is if you count Emerald and Ruby weapon, which this song just make it even more intense than they would otherwise be), and in all honnestly if FFIX's was FFV's Battle theme perfected, this one is FFIV's Battle Theme perfected for me, just like FFIV it's an incredible mix of epicness and intensity right from start to finish and having a feeling of dramatic to that works wonder, and what really sold it to me it's just the construction of the song, it just keeps building up and up until it reach it's climax, and imo the climax of the song is absolutly fantastic, never failed to send me chill and just elevate this song as not only my favorite battle theme in the franchise but just one of my favorite battle theme in the JRPG genre as an all, I just can't express my love for this song enough, FFVII might be overrated on some aspects, but this battle theme is just a master piece in my eye.
I agree that FFXII doesn’t have an official battle theme. I just wanted to be able to include it somehow. Yeah I want to re-do some of these older lists to be able to include FF16. I think it has a great battle theme, and an even greater boss theme.

Top 5 battle music: Final Fantasy. It’s a classic. Even if overplayed. Final Fantasy VII. All the boss battle themes are fantastic. Final Fantasy VIII. I enjoy all the boss themes. But Man with a Machine Gun? :O Top tier! Final Fantasy IX. The best normal battle theme of FF for sure. Final Fantasy 3/VI. All of the music here is fantastic but the final battle music cannot be topped!
That battle theme popping up on a goty music nominee list was my first introduction to the franchise. It is unforgettable and it still surprises me that no other game dev or musician has tried to use the violin for combat music.
I think the problem of FFX's battle system is that the intro is too long. Other than that, I agree it's great. Amazing how, since the whole game revolves around the themes of spheres and water, Uematsu somehow managed to evoke bubbles in this track. Like, if bubbles could make sounds, that would be it. Truly a genius.
OMG no. Total disagree about FF9. I would put it near the bottom honestly. The heavy bassline is nice when you hear it for the first time/a couple times, but it really gets aggravating after a while, every time a battle starts. I was also going to say I disagree about FF3, but after listening to the Pixel Remaster version throughout the game, I agree it's great (at least this version is).
7, 9, 10 and ‘Feel My Blade’ from 9 are my favourites. They’re concise and immediately evoke heroism. FF8 is the one I’ve heard the most and I love it for its long-winded, Rock-opera cheesiness.

And as much as I love FF9 it's not one of the best tracks. FF7 deserves the top spot. You don't even have it near the top of the list. That's insane.
I only played the Nintendo FF games when they came to PS1 as VII was the first mainline FF game to come to britain. And after the PS1 games they were a bit of a slog to play but 6's music seemed to hold up really well for me. But 6's battle theme is horrible, the worst by far. It's horrible sounding and not very fitting to a battle context.
Oh that’s too bad you didn’t enjoy the early FF games. I consider FF6 to be the best balance of the eras. Its pixelated fantasy world and designs from before mixed with some of the advanced storytelling methods of the games after make it an everlasting treasure. But yes the battle theme…yikes.
My top five battle themes would be 5. Don't be afraid FF VIII 4. Battle 1 FF II 3. Those who fight FF VII 2. Blinded by the light FF XIII 1. Battle 1 FF V ( love Pokémon Emerald ost and that soundtrack is heavy with trumpets haha), PS would love to see you ranking the Boss Battle themes since would be interesting seeing where songs like Dancing Mad (FF6 is my favorite) or One Winged Angel stand to each other. final fantasy 4 takes the cake for me in terms of battle theme, but if you count one off themes, clash on the big bridge from ffv is one of my favourite songs of all time, it’s awesome
I've just been getting back into Final Fantasy recently due to me finally deciding to go through and beat every game. 2 is kind of hard to get through but I'm determined to make it through. Great video. As for my battle theme ranking I'd go 1. 13 2. 10 3. 15 4. 9 5. 7 6. 4 7. 6 8. 1 9. 2 10. 3 11. 14 12. 12 13. 5 14. 8 15. 11
I always had the exact same thinking about VI's battle theme. I LOVE the music throughout the game, and think it's not only the best in the series, but the best in gaming. But the battle theme never resonated with me. Perhaps because literally ever other battle track is so much better. Personally I think Atma/Ultima Weapon's theme is the best one, but Dancing Mad is also pretty amazing. I personally like VIII's Don't Be Afraid a lot more than most of these, but I concede I'm in the minority. Oh, and Mystic Quest is the best FF battle music and I will fight you if you disagree. :)
To be honest, Mystic Quest possibly has the best soundtrack in the series. It DEFINITELY has the best all-around battle themes in the series. I’ll have to another one of these specifically for the spin-offs.
I like seeing FFII getting some love here. While my opinion on the game as a whole is mixed, it still has one of my favorite soundtracks, and the battle theme is fantastic --- probably in my personal top 3. I'm also a big fan of FFVI's battle theme though and, while it's not on this list, one of my other personal favorites is "Hunt or Be Hunted" from XV. I know it isn't one of the main three, but I still count it because you still hear it when taking on standard enemies --- just, only if you're doing a hunt quest.
@@optimysticquest Man, FF1's battle theme is so iconic, the grandfather to battle tracks for the rest of time. FF6's theme has such a strong pulse, and that melody never leaves your mind. The one all the others are trying to live up to.

In this category 12 will always be last because it doesn’t have an official battle theme, which is just extremely depressing. A FF without a battle theme feels so weird.

Man, the FF12 battle theme is so good, brought back so many great memories hearing it! My personal favorite battle theme is from the Ravana fight from FFXIV. That one gets me pumped up every time I hear it
Personally for main battle themes id put everything after FF10 on the bottom of the list then x2 then 1 then 5 then 3 then 7 then 2 then 4 then 6 then 8 then 10 then 9 then id put 8 (lagunas battle theme) at the top despite not being a main battle theme cus its that good

Yes that is true. A lot of the time when something is popular it can be overplayed and feel stale after a while. Those are tracks that have never gotten old to me. FF music in general doesn't ever get old to me though.
@@optimysticquest I think the remade versions are still really good. I will always prefer the original, but I feel they took what made the original so good and modernized it
1-6 and 9 are so similar, I consider them to be the same theme. Agreed that 9 is the best incarnation of that theme. However best to me in the series is FFX. It just gets me pumping when that screen breaks into shards of glass and the theme pops up. It's the only starts with a high note too. It also doubles as a workout theme lol.
Remy D yeah FFX actually used to be higher on my list. I think the endless grinding in the monster arena cooled it down a little for me. It’s incredible though.
haven't played a single ff game so I'm judging purely on my taste in music and not how they may hold up in game.... 15- XI Idk guess I just never got into it 14- I it's fine I just like others more 13- IV just feels almost too victorious if that makes sense 12- XII tbh this one I just placed randomly cause ffxii doesn't have a regular battle theme lol 11- III good, but that's just kinda it 10- XV same as last entry 9- XIV I like the rock aesthetic but don't really find myself humming it that often 8- VI catchy, but that's kinda it lol 7- II it's like I but better lol, also love that opening melody 6- VII probably the most famous, strangely I find my favourite thing about it is those metallic clanks in the background 5- V it feels like a more toned back yet somehow more accentuated IV, I like it 4- XIII normal version is really good but give the record keeper version of it a listen because if I included that it'd be right up with NO1 3- IX really like how it's a more classic feel yet still gives off a modern ff vibe 2- VIII as a drummer I love me an off time signature, plus I actually use the 'water and water and water water' meme as a vocal warm up 1- X fell in love as soon as I heard it, now litterally can't go 5 mins without humming it lol

I'll give the boss themes a good listen then I'll give my opinion, video game music always seems to go so underapreciated but it's my favourite style as there's so much more to it than composition, as some tracks may interact with the gameplay like mother 3, whilst it can vastly change the mood of a scene, I doubt battles in ff would be as exciting without the amazing songs to go along with it, love the vids btw!

I've just been getting back into Final Fantasy recently due to me finally deciding to go through and beat every game. 2 is kind of hard to get through but I'm determined to make it through. Great video.

I always had the exact same thinking about VI's battle theme. I LOVE the music throughout the game, and think it's not only the best in the series, but the best in gaming. But the battle theme never resonated with me. Perhaps because literally ever other battle track is so much better. Personally I think Atma/Ultima Weapon's theme is the best one, but Dancing Mad is also pretty amazing.
I personally like VIII's Don't Be Afraid a lot more than most of these, but I concede I'm in the minority. Oh, and Mystic Quest is the best FF battle music and I will fight you if you disagree. :)
To be honest, Mystic Quest possibly has the best soundtrack in the series. It DEFINITELY has the best all-around battle themes in the series.
I’ll have to another one of these specifically for the spin-offs.
I like seeing FFII getting some love here. While my opinion on the game as a whole is mixed, it still has one of my favorite soundtracks, and the battle theme is fantastic --- probably in my personal top 3. I'm also a big fan of FFVI's battle theme though and, while it's not on this list, one of my other personal favorites is "Hunt or Be Hunted" from XV. I know it isn't one of the main three, but I still count it because you still hear it when taking on standard enemies --- just, only if you're doing a hunt quest.

@@optimysticquest Man, FF1's battle theme is so iconic, the grandfather to battle tracks for the rest of time.
FF6's theme has such a strong pulse, and that melody never leaves your mind. The one all the others are trying to live up to.

For the majority of entries in this list, you described the battle system, overall OST or general public opinion towards the game; I would be much more interested in hearing your opinions on the songs in question and some musical analysis. In this category 12 will always be last because it doesn’t have an official battle theme, which is just extremely depressing. A FF without a battle theme feels so weird.
Oh geez where do I begin? The battle theme is usually epic & brings the battle into instant hype mode. So if I had to say what’s my top 5, FFVII Jenova, FFVIII Man with a Machine Gun, FFV, FFII, FFXII

Yeah FFXIII has consistently amazing battle themes. I like Saber’s Edge a little more but they’re both so awesome

After that, FF9 would probably be your 2nd fav since you use it as a bedtime story for your nephews and nieces and FF4 and FF5 would be in your top 5 since you’ve expressed your love for both these games in various ways.
Man, the FF12 battle theme is so good, brought back so many great memories hearing it! My personal favorite battle theme is from the Ravana fight from FFXIV. That one gets me pumped up every time I hear it
I haven't heard the Ravana battle theme yet! I need to catch up on doing everything in XIV. I'm so behind.

My favorite is IX only because of the emotional connection I have to the plot, the characters, and the sounds of the game as a whole
I really like the sound effects in IX-primarily the menus and treasure chest “Item Acquired”.

Personally for main battle themes id put everything after FF10 on the bottom of the list then x2 then 1 then 5 then 3 then 7 then 2 then 4 then 6 then 8 then 10 then 9 then id put 8 (lagunas battle theme) at the top despite not being a main battle theme cus its that good

Yes that is true. A lot of the time when something is popular it can be overplayed and feel stale after a while. Those are tracks that have never gotten old to me. FF music in general doesn't ever get old to me though.
FF7 will always have a special place in my heart. The battle theme is phenomenal

@@optimysticquest I think the remade versions are still really good. I will always prefer the original, but I feel they took what made the original so good and modernized it
1-6 and 9 are so similar, I consider them to be the same theme. Agreed that 9 is the best incarnation of that theme.
However best to me in the series is FFX. It just gets me pumping when that screen breaks into shards of glass and the theme pops up. It's the only starts with a high note too. It also doubles as a workout theme lol.
Remy D yeah FFX actually used to be higher on my list. I think the endless grinding in the monster arena cooled it down a little for me. It’s incredible though.

I’m genuinely curious how you would rank things from the other lists I’ve made.
I'll give the boss themes a good listen then I'll give my opinion, video game music always seems to go so underapreciated but it's my favourite style as there's so much more to it than composition, as some tracks may interact with the gameplay like mother 3, whilst it can vastly change the mood of a scene, I doubt battles in ff would be as exciting without the amazing songs to go along with it, love the vids btw!
