Conversation Pieces: Early Bird - Aardman Animations (Short Film)

- A real radio presenter provides the voice for his animated counterpart, a weary soul who doesn’t let a small thing like hosting a radio show get in the way of his morning routine…
Commissioned by Channel 4 in 1982, Conversation Pieces allowed Peter Lord and Dave Sproxton to develop ideas aimed at a more sophisticated, adult audience. The 5-minute shorts also gave birth to a device that has become an Aardman trademark - matching animated characters to real-life dialogue.
I know everyone loves the Aardman shorts that were darker and more thematic, but honestly this has always been one of my favourites, if only for the sheer volume of raw creativity in every single shot. It's nothing disturbing or ground-breaking, it's just good honest fun in a really creative way.
DJ, Roger Days book, 'Pirates of the Airwaves' sent me here. Page 254 mentions that Aardman Animations wanted to make a short cartoon about an early morning DJ... A good and interesting insight to the origins of commercial radio in the UK. Thanks Roger for the invitation to see how it's done! 😃
Still in the business after nearly 40 years, and believe me, this is how it feels sometimes. Spot on work!
I bet!
Even though he had to scarf it down, he had a better breakfast than most people do who have to get up for work that early: a bowl of corn flakes, a cuppa, a toasted, buttered cassette, & a Full English (the plate of eggs, sausages, bacon, mushrooms, & tomatoes he had, for those who don't know the term).
so u think we aint clever P**** off raciest
Hadn't seen this Conversation Pieces short before! Loved every bit of it. A perfect combination of wacky and a bit depressing. The set and lighting definitely reminded me of the original Rex the Runt short.
Life of being in a RadioStation..
not bad
Radio West, well theres a blast from the past! Used to listen every morning
Always suspected if it was legit!
Was born in America so I missed out lol
Can't find a lot of info on the web either!
@@FloofPuppy yeah it's totally legit. Try searching radio west Bristol, it's now Heart radio. It was my local radio station back in the 1980s
@@xChuChux911Chu Very much a legitimate former ILR (Independent Local Radio) station, before being absorbed by other conglomerates in time. Like many it struggled against the BBC's local stations that had already been on air for about a decade before they launched. As for Roger Day, he's been just about everywhere stationwise. He was the first DJ on Piccadilly Radio in Manchester back in 1974.
@@FloofPuppy all the conversation shorts were real recordings of everyday random conversations , talks , in this case a radio show then put to animations even the old radio crackles .
@@FloofPuppyFor most of us Americans, we saw this because it was part of an animated festival compilation that came out in the 80's called The International Tournee of Animation, highlighting many shorts from around the world produced at the time.
Man the animation is actually really good for the time !
It could reminded me of all the talk radio stations here in America.
I'm sure in particular, the "morning zoos" type programs we hear on radio here.
actaully hilarious gags i love it
I Gotta Say That This Is Way Before Wallace And Gromit.
Yep! This is from 1982, A Grand Day Out came out in 1989, if I remember correctly!

At 0:42 I certain the the newsreader is Alan King and definitely not a David Garlnston, whoever that is.

Anyone know what that reggae tune is at the end?
Is that building his house I think that’s pretty cool and why bro ate a cassette tape
What radio station is that from?
Radio West in the UK back in 1983, in the city of Bristol to be more specific.
Now more known currently as Heart Bristol 96.3FM
