Well done video. Probably wouldn't test ohms on a live circuit though. Usually blows the tester fuse or kills the calibration at the least. Keep up the good work!
Great video!! I have a no charge issue and just tried a cheap Amazon rectifier and it only outputs 6vdc 🤦. Everything else works just like yours. I have a 2003 sportsman 400. So I have one more coming and if it doesn’t work I’ll be doing the upgrade you did! 🎉🎉
Not sure if it will work on an 04 model, but try putting it in neutral, turn ur key on and off 3 times and it should run its own diagnostic and shot u a couple codes, then that can maybe cut a method or two outta your way
Hello, thanks for all the info. I have performed the test as outlined in your video. All 3 yellow wires mirrored the readings you had on the video, 6-29 AC. When I performed the test while on ohms it gave a reading, did not stay on OL What does this mean exactly?
if you are getting any reading other than OL then the stator is shorting to ground, most likely one of the coils on the stator have burned up or the copper windings have a broken spot.
@ thank you very much. So does that require stator replacement? I have replaced the regulator rectifier and it is now overcharging. Would the grounding to coil, Or unwinding cause this issue? Thanks again.

After doing this method I felt the wires that are brown and red and the brown is hot to the touch. Then the yellow red wires are also getting warm so is it the stator?
Nevermind I didn’t let the rectifier burn up, I rechecked over all wires and grounds nothing I’d seen grounding out. So I pulled the stator cover off to replace the stator and the flywheel had the magnets falling off of it causing it to ground itself and not charge properly so $670 later it’s fixed keeping around 14.3 instead of 17-20 volts.
I have a 2004 Sportsman built late in 2003. I have the same over-charging issues, but I read DC coming from the stator. Would this same voltage regulator work? I also ordered the same voltage regulator (ebay) with the same results as you,
is this method still working with the yz reg cause I've must of spent $200+ on different brands of regulators and all wouldn't hold I've already replaced the stator so it shouldn't be the fault
Went on my last ride last summer and 10 minutes in the reg wires started smoking so I just had to run off battery and unplug it, I have fixed every little thing that was wrong with it and I just can't get around this problem.
@@swiftlyswiv Yes it is holding up fine. If you haven't already make sure your battery is in good working order, running it on battery alone will damage it the same way overcharging will damage it. If your battery terminals are loose this can also cause a regulator to fail. Wouldn't hurt to clean up all the ground connections on the wiring harness to the frame.
@@1982HondaATC70 I’ve checked everything and the battery connections have been checked every ground on the bike, scrapped the frame regrounded them. I’ll have to try this out and see what happens usually the regulator will maybe work for 3 minutes then it shoots up in volts. Thanks a lot I’ve been trying with this thing over 2 years.

My 2005 charged 17v, boiled the battery. Replaced stator with a 50 dollar one from Amazon, 3 years later still doing great
