Love the church! Especially their first 2 albums Of skins and hearts and The blurred crusade. Still on my daily play list
They have been one of my favorite bands for over 40 years. Their career has been fascinating in its ups & downs. Seance is my favorite album by them with Starfish & After Everything my next picks. Great guitars 🎸 on this track. Marty & Peter 😊
One of the most perfect jangle guitar bands ever
You stopped it at the start of one of the best guitar breaks I ever heard. A beautiful piece of accoustic guitar if ever I heard one.
Ooh I love The Church…gorgeous song. I don’t get too much darkness from it, just a bit of melancholy. To me, Joy Division is much darker, post-punk whereas I’d call this early alt-rock. A lot of their music has a psychedelic, dreamy quality to it too, although this one is pretty straightforward.
Great choice!!
Wiould recommend Its No Reason also!
I had to import ''The Blurred Crusade'' album because Capital wouldn't release it in the US.
I was 13 when this song was a hit in Australia. I would listen to it on 45 and wonder who the song was about. The flamenco style guitar playing by Peter Koppes used to make me tear up. One song that used to make me cry is ''It's No Reason'' (recommended)
Agree, It's No Reason is beautiful, would be in my top 10 Church tracks.
Hi Cynthia,
I just want to say that is a great new look you got there! The style frames your face nicely.
I always loved this song, and never really understood the dark undertones until much later.
I guess I wasn't a very deep kid. I thought ''Choir Girl'' was a song about a sad girl that cries a lot
and I thought this song was about meeting up with a friend, I guess?
Great songs! Keep up with the Oz stuff!
Brilliant band from that early 80's Australian wave ie; The Birthday Party, Go-Betweens, Triffids, Moodests, Scientists, loads more.. The Church perhaps the most commercial. I got a few requests that you might find interesting.

I guess Steve Kilbey is one of those songwriters that leaves his lyrics open to interpretation. I always imagined it being about wanting to communicate with a deceased friend. Just another Steve Kilbey song that's deep, deep without a meaning.
Oh, by the way, I'm just about to fly out on holiday, so I may not around too much, so, I know it's a little early but an early Happy birthday 🎉🎉🎉
I suppose the ''English'' sound cannot be denied, but I always felt an Australian under current in The Church's music.
I've always loved this song. I wasn't so hot about The Church's first single ''She Never Said'', but the second single ''The Unguarded Moment'' put me on a lifelong commitment to The Church. I have everything that they've released including side projects, and bands that Steve Kilbey's brothers had played in (who I have to say are very good, and I will recommend them below). "Almost With You'' is just one out of many brilliant Church songs. Last thing I've got to say is that I haven't seen that magazine cover for decades!
That's Pups' copy of Roadrunner from 1982! 😮
Cheers,
Hayley
It's staggering that they can still be putting out such good music after so long. Criminally unrecognized!
@@adamx2939 I know. Their new album is amazing. Fancy bringing out a prog-rock orientated album in 2023! Only The Church could get away with that.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 A little proggy with the sci-fi-ish concept, but still quite accessible, no boring noodling. They can certainly do anything they turn their hand to, probably should say "he" since Steve is the only original left. Freakish ability to maintain the standard.
@@adamx2939 I guess calling it a prog-rock album is a bit of a misnomer. It does feel strange that The Church is now an all Steve Kilbey show. I felt terrible when Marty left, and now Peter is no longer a member. It's a bit of a shame that it's all down to Steve now. Still love the new stuff.
Cheers,
Hayley
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 Agreed Hayley, wish they could have stayed together but I guess we can't have everything, got to be grateful for 4+ decades. I do think the sound is a bit different now, the guitars not quite as distinctive and inventive as with Marty and Peter, but I'm with you, still love it.
Adam
I been a fan since 82 great aussie band ❤❤❤❤❤❤they are huge influeince of the byrds bowie new wave music
Great song! Always loved this one.
Sad news to all beach lovers everywhere.
Jimmy Buffett has passed away.
the "untrained" characteristic of Steve Kilby's voice is a style choice. It's borderline alternative pop. But I like it that way.
I so agree, the voice is perfect for the song and all Church songs. Some bands need a raw untrained voice for their sound. Nick Cave would fall into this category as well. Some singers with the best voices on the planet I can't listen to...so boring and no feeling.
Arista sent him to a vocal " coach " before recording Starfish.
I like this
Ha, ha - I love seeing my old copy of Roadrunner used at the end there. It finally comes to good use. I got so many of these old music rags.
''Alone With You'' by Sunnyboys, ''One Perfect Day'' by Little Heroes, and this song stirs the same emotions within me. 💗
I was wondering what happened to my copy of Roadrunner. You've kept it all this time?
You kept your Roadrunner magazines? You're a legend. I lost all my copies in the mid 80's.
So Gillybean... You're a bit of a rock 'n' roll hoarder, are ya? Keeping all these old dusty Road Runner magazines. Did you ever keep copies of Juke?
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 Sisters share and share alike! I know you think what's yours is yours and what's Pups's is Pup's, but even Aunt Mimi had to learn how to share John Lennon with the rest of the world and not keep him all to herself.
Gillybean, it's not all about you! Have you not noticed Cynthia's hair? Don't you have something nice to say about her new hairstyle. You're a woman, you should notice these things.
It's good to see you using the 80s Forever Radio upload of the video. The track embedded in the original video was originally sped up for the sake of airtime. The video on the 80s Forever Radio has been slowed down to match the speed of the actual recording. It was always irritating to hear The Church sounding almost like chipmunks when we used to see the video on TV in the early 80's. Below are some Church related items that you might like to check out sometime.
The Bhagavad Guitars - We Haven't Arrived nzoz1988 (note: Steve Kilbey's brother John on guitar, not singer on this track)
The Crystal Set - Benefit Of The Doubt nzoz1986 (note: Steve Kilbey's brother Russell on bass/vocals)
The Radiators - Room Full Of Diamonds nzoz1981 vs. The Church - Room Full Of Diamonds
Cheers,
Hayley
Correction: John Kilbey did sing ''We Haven't Arrived'' with The Bhagavad Guitars. Great song that was produced by Steve Kilbey.

Your haircut looks lovely, Cynthia. That style really suits you! 🙂
I agree, Hayley. It does suit her. How arey you?
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr I'm quite well.
I trust you're doing well, Vanessa?
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 I'm fine. I just wondered the other day what it would have been like if I kept in touch with you and Gillian when we were teens. I liked the time I met you two at Luna Park. I'm sure we would have been good friends, even though we lived in two different cities.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 I'm okay
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr Not worth pondering over.
Excellent band with so many great tracks - from their debut "The Unguarded Moment" right the way through to their latest music. They've got slightly darker and more experimental as the years have gone on, but there's great music throughout. I'd recommend "The Unguarded Moment", "Electric Lash", "When You Were Mine", "Reptile", and "Kings" as an overview of their earlier works. As to the "English" sound, they're often compared to bands like Echo and the Bunnymen.
We did The Unguarded Moment. We added the others to our list.
This song is about black magic and contacting the dead. It's John Edward's all time favourite song.
🤨It is not John Edward's favourite song.
The certainly do not sound like an Aussie band so you spot on with your observations of their sound. As an Aussie myself they always felt foreign to me. Good at their style of music but not something I would ever go out of my way to put on and listen to.
I saw these guys at the Sweetwaters music festival with my dad in 1983 midnight oil Toots and the Maytels DD SMASH SPLIT ENZ THE SCREAMING ME MEES and heaps more i can't remember off hand...... Since having a brain bleed in December 1999 my nick name hasn't been MEMORIE BANK for nothing 😅 do de do de do de de do 🥱🥱😴😴😴
Your new hairstyle looks lovely, Cynthia.
I love this song. No shade on Joy Division. I got into JD in the late 70's and had a bit of involvement in filming New Order's first Aussie concert at the Crystal Ballroom in 1981. I'm a big Joy Division/New Order head. But The Church were a lot more sophisticated as musicians and musicologists than Joy Division. Half The Church are Englishboys, which is why there's an English tone in their sound. The members of The Church weren't surface musicians like Joy Division. They didn't get together with the intension of making punk noise before Martin Hannett put them right. The Church have histories that go back to the early 70's, and each of them were walking encyclopedia's of music. They didn't need their leadsinger to tell them who The Doors were.
The Church were classed as ''Jangle-Pop'', which is fair in a way. But I think they were so much more than just some jangle band. You either get it or you don't.
The Church are on their own street and are NOT sharing it with Joy Division or Echo And The Bunnymen. The Church are more aligned with The Sunnyboys, believe it or not.
Always annoys me a bit to hear The Church blithely compared to various British bands. They don't sound much alike at all to me and are miles better than any of them imo.
@@adamx2939 I just hate the whole mythology that surrounds Joy Division because it is just bullshit. They admitted to being yobs that wanted to have fun, and even hated the sound that Martin Hannett had given them. I think it was Peter Hook that said he never heard of The Doors before Ian Curtis put him on to them. I've got nothing against working class people that climb their way out of shitty conditions. Anybody that achieves what JD achieved is good in my books, because I was also from the working class of Melbourne and thankfully Goth Whitlam allowed scum like me to get into university for free!
But it is the same boring narrative that was created by all those spin doctors in the British press that anything that sounds remotely like something of their own making (ususually deriving from another place - Joy Division being a walking reference to German Fascism) must be completely infuenced by it.
The Church served music lovers a lot longer than New Order or Echo. The Church have a new album out and it is going over ground that the group have never attempted before... They keep things interesting while others just repeat themselves.
Gough Whitlam
The Church predate a lot of early British indie bands of the early 80s such as the smiths. They should have been so much bigger in the uk but they have kept there integrity it doesn't matter where they are from. Being Australian i think they were different over there from the obvious bands but there is a universal feel to there music
Can you do The Smithereens "Behind the wall of sleep"? How about Crash-Test Dummies "Superman Song" or Band of Horses "Funeral"? Thanks for what you do. peace
Behind the wall of sleep is an awesome track, I second that. Also Blood and Roses and Only a Memory were also good tracks.
Just like Ian, I also second (or is it third?) that. Smithereens' ''Green Thoughts'' and ''11'' are two of my favourite late 80's/early 90's powerpop indi records. Saw them live too!
So much yes! Behind The Wall Of Sleep is one of my all time favourites
We Know The Superman Song very well. We will put the others on our list.
I know I'm a very egotistical outspoken guy but unlike all the other people that comment here, I observe other things and notice stuff. I just want to say that Cynthia, your hair looks lovely and that's coming from a hyper masculine bloke from Australia. Lovely hairstyle.
You're a dork. lol
Rob, you're funny. Embarrassing, but funny. Haha
@@Sspringgrainn He's more tolerable than funny.
Or maybe new king jack by sekret sekret
I used to see Sekret Sekret in the late 70's, early 80's! I was talking to Robbo on here about them a few months ago.
LiveItUp doesn't seem to have a good impression of them. I agree with ''New King Jack''. Great song!
Yeah, there’s a somber feel to the lyrics that’s brought up by a reasonably brisk tempo and some bright chords. It’s written in C major if I recall correctly so it’s not a sad musical tone at all. Perhaps their idea was that the music was a mask to the melancholy feelings underneath.
I always enjoyed this and their big hit Under The Milky Way, but for me their best will always be The Unguarded Moment. You’ve done their top 3 songs now, in my opinion.
Written and played in the key of G.
@@James-wj8eq
That would’ve been my second guess. Still a very strong major chord sound for a melancholy delivery.
It's more a gothic version of jangle pop (post-Byrds) than early 80's british pop. The Church contributed to save the eighties from this awful synth sound and monolithic beat. Note that there is something of the song "Make Me Smile" from Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel in this one (in particular the acoustic guitar solo). There are many Church songs you could love. "Under the Milky Way" seems one of the most obvious choice since it was a hit worldwide and is moreover a great tune. My favorites are "Just For You", "To Be In Your Eyes", "Electric Lash", "Reptile".
I like your reviews but sometimes Chris is obsessed with comparisons, relax man😅. Cheers.
My brain places artists in it's own categories, automatically. There are many categories in there. It's what happens.
All good, your taste and opinions are very interesting. Cheers.
