Cool to see you guys coming around to Sunnyboys. By the way, it was lovely to see you guys speaking live and interacting with us during the stream. I've only had four hours of sleep, but I am fine as long as I don't drive 😆 This is a sentimental song. It always takes me back to the summer of 81/82 with my first boyfriend. We both loved this song. The last song we both shared a loved for was ''Almost With You'' by The Church. ''Happy Man'' and ''Show Me Some Discipline'' are two other goodies.

Sunnyboys were frozen orange flavoured drinks that came in a pyramidal shaped tetra pack that us Aussie kids enjoyed in the 70's and 80's. No doubt thats where they got the name from, and if you got lucky when you finished the drink you opened up the wrapper and found yellow writing inside telling you that you "got a lucky" and you could take the wrapperr back to the shop for a free one. Obviously they were also a ripping 60's moddish styled rock band as you have already seen. Happy Man also a great song.

I saw these guys at the Meredith Music Festival in 2012. I was there to see much younger bands, and was slow to pick up on the magic that these Sunny older gentlemen possessed.. but they grew on me. Jeremy Oxley was as cute as a puppy back in the day, and reminds me of a big teddy bear today.
I have all their albums on vinyl. Some of his lyrics are a little telling of his state of mind at the time, but they're all great songs.
So This Is real, You Need A Friend, Happy Man, Trouble In My Brain, I Can't Talk To You, Comes As No Surprise and Love In A Box need to be added to your 'gotta listen' playlist

when i first moved to australia from california, i fell into an australian music rabbit hole and one of the bands that impressed me most was sunnyboys. a lot of young girls at their concerts back then. i got to see the group again in 2018 and noticed a lot of older women and their young daughers cheering the band on. but i also saw groups of young people that seemed to be there on their own admission. great band, timeless music...

Am I being odd… when this came out I thought if someone’s singing “I’m alone with you tonight…” surely that person knows that.
EVERYONE in my class however loved the Sunnyboys (named after an iced-treat - an orange flavoured cordial, in a pack shaped like a pyramid. You would freeze it, the peel the a corner off and slowly eat the orange ice).

I still love Sunnyboys to this day, and have never stopped listening to their music. I would love to share stories about seeing and interacting with the boys, but it's uninspiring when all I got to go by is the LP cover on screen as the visual accompaniment. I used to see these boys play just prior to them being swooped up by the illustrious Mushroom records. Jeremy and Pete Oxley (the two guys on the right hand side of this blue album cover) were very funny and great to hang out with. I played pool with the drummer, Bil Bilson (the second from the left) and he was also a humorous fella. You can't tell their characters by that image. It doesn't capture the spirit of the band.
I'm happy to see you have both enjoyed this song. Seeing this on Countdown for the first time was quite an amazing moment. I wish you guys had watched it instead of just listening to the song.

Great song and great band. I was in a surfing competition with singer Jeremy Oxley back in the mid 70's. Jeremy kicked my butt. He and his brother Pete formed The Sunnyboys a few years later, and Jeremy proved to not only be a good surfer, but also a good songwriter and a guitarist to boot. It was great to see him have success in music, and it was pretty crap to see him fall apart. I will refrain from reading comments because I am very defensive when it comes to this band. Anybody that was close to this group would be.

First gig was at the factory in Marrackville with youngest daughter and the second with older daughter and a whole mob of school mates at Dee Why RSL. The Breakup Song was the big one here in Australia for the GKB, but if you like Jeopardy there’s a ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic parody I Lost On Jeopardy which isn’t as funny in Australia because we didn’t have that game show, although we see enough American tv to be aware of the rough format.

As much as I enjoy it, this one is maybe a bit more fondly remembered as nostalgia than as a great song.
Back in the 70s and into the 80s us school kids would go to the tuck shop (canteen) and buy flavoured ice blocks in tetra-shapes. There were a number of flavours like cola or orange or whatever, and each flavour had a name. Sunnyboy was the name for the orange flavour, if I remember, but someone here will correct me.
This band reminds me of that era, like Flash & The Pan or Tommy Tutone, but it’s hard to say why this song still ensures today. It’s pretty simple garage band rock, not much more. Still, glad it came up. Another great memory from the Aussie band scene of the pubs and radio in that era.

      G'day Sean,
Sorry to be the one to correct you, but from my memory, Sunnyboy was the title of that type of pyramid shaped icebloke. Gillian (my sister who also comments on here as LiveItUp) and I used to get Sunnyboy iceblokes on those hot summer days - especially around December/January. Like you, we also got them from the tuck shop. We all thought it was cute that the new band in Sydney were calling themselves Sunnyboys. There's more to their songs and lyrics than simple garage rock.

    • @sean---the-other-one
      @sean---the-other-one Рік тому +3

      @@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83
Yes, I said it was tetra shaped, meaning a tetrahedron, or a triangular pyramid. The packs were called tetrapaks, and these are the most efficient way of storing something with the minimum surface area of the package (according to my older brother). They were essentially a tube where the top hole was sealed at 90 degrees opposite to the bottom hole.
As to The Sunnyboys musicality, this song shows glimpses, such as the solo chord structure as pointed out in the video, and the solo itself. The arpeggios and three chords of the verse/chorus and the melody that follows the chords are very simple. That being said, it’s a fond memory for me, feels like summer in Melbourne with Chiko Rolls and dim sims and Space Invaders and pinballs and swimming pools and dragsters and all the rest.

I see what you’re saying, that Sunnyboys we’re the name of that treat. I don’t actually think that’s totally accurate. Just like Hoover or Xerox or Bic, Sunnyboys became the name we used to refer to these things as, but it was only one flavour. Glug was another, I think that was the cola version.

I used to follow the Sunnies during this period, and they were a lot of fun to see live. It stopped being fun when singer/guitarist, Jeremy Oxley, began showing signs of schizophrenia - on stage and in person. After thirty years of relative obscurity, he came back from the wilderness with the original Sunnyboys and some good shows. There are some trailers of the documentary about Jeremy called ''The Sunnyboy'' on UA-cam.

Now I am not able to even have my latest videos show up first in the youtube search results. You have to press update to see them. So please just delete these suggestions.
