What a phenomenal band. They didn't get the recognition they deserved.
huge in australia
They are still recording and performing
I don't know, they played the hell out of it in Texas when it came out. It was kind of a make-out song, which was no small feat considering it featured a bagpipe!
I had some beers with the guitarist a few years back in Louisville. Great guy.
@@Obabasu Marty Wilson Piper?
yes finally this song is reacted to. absolute classic 80s songs. Reptile is another good song by the church.
The entire Starfish album is flawless.
Plus Unguarded Moment
Reptile, yes!
Electric Lash
Reptile is spectacular!
Christ. This is another one of the coolest songs ever recorded.
Christ? The Church.
I get it!
@@goldboy150 Heh! I just use "christ" as a general opening curse word when I post stuff.
@@Stupha_Kinpendous haha I know dude. Was just making an obvious, stupid joke lol
@@goldboy150 I'm mentally buying you a cocktail. I'm IRL drinking a Rob Roy, and toasting your good health. Cheers, brother!
Haunting. Emotional. Moody. Steve Kilby’s voice beautifully compliments the song.
This song and "Cuts You Up" by Peter Murphy are complete vibes.
“I’ll fall with your knife”
Agreed.
Spot on mate! Check out this version of Murphy's tune. ua-cam.com/video/6qGNuqmaMtU/v-deo.html
Me, in the Navy, 1989, on board the USS Constellation. I would lay in the fuselage of an F-14 at night with this in my headphones. You can actually see the Milky Way at sea.
Wish I could have seen that;
Sounds beautiful, thank you for your service.
Wow, that's fucking beautiful. Hope you're doing good man.
Sea is the best place to see the stars...... ZERO light pollution.
Classic 80's college radio song.
As a Gen X Aussie this is the music of my youth. We even used to dress like him!
Definitely an underappreciated band but for me INXS is still my favorite Aussie band. Coming from a Millennial.
Same here 😊
Under the Milky Way song feels like drifting on a melancholy sea of disbelief staring at the stars for a sign of life
This song is an absolute must for any 80's playlist as far as I'm concerned.
Totally. Along with I Melt With You by Modern English. My top 2 favorite new wave songs, as a metalhead.
I remember when I first heard this song. I was really in awe of it. Still one of my favorites today. “Reptile” is another favorite.
I found this song and BÖC's "Light Years of Love" during the same record store visit... Both are perfect sleepless night songs.
Love how this song automatically changes your mood / vibe
Such an under-rated band, except to those of us that love them
One of my all-time favorite songs. I liked its use in the theatrical cut of Donnie Darko.
Then you gotta also love "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division too then right?
@@Kreutz the movie ruined both songs for me in that, I can't hear one and not the other
I loved The Church and Donnie Darko, but it's been so long since I saw the film that I completely forgot the song was ever in it.
shrooms and donnie darko equal awesome 2 hours
Love the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Introduced me to some great 80s songs I wouldn’t have known otherwise.
The 80's all over the back. Like mixing the Cure, Bunnymen, Mission with Haircut 100, Orange Juice singing.
This here is my 80's childhood 🤩 Along with Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Fixx, Duran Duran, Love and Rockets, The Cult etc...
nailed it
The Church is another great Aussie band from the 80s. Australia had so many great rock bands in the 80s. I suggest you listen to Unguarded Moment, Reptile, Hotel Womb, Destination, Antenna, Lost, or Blood Money by The Church.
Emotional music is a two way street. The conversation is when you get it, but also in ways, when it gets you. Why Lex relates, I get. Even though the song may be melancholic, because it understands you, it makes you happy to hear something that shares your mood. It speaks to me on that level too.
One of the most underrated bands of the ‘80’s. They produced some of the most melodic guitar sounds this side of The Smith’s Johnny Marr.
"Starfish", the album that contains this song, was one of The Church's best albums and was released 34 years ago. The original vinyl copy is still there, in my vintage collection, purchased on the day of its release. I have always been fascinated by the sounds and voices of this Australian band
Thanks for the reminder, I feel old!. There are 13 Church cds on my rack, long time fan.
@@toddhill7483 Sometime Anywhere completely captivates me every time I listen to it.
I still got the Blurred Crusade mate, will never part with it.
"released 34 years ago" ugh that's terrifying.
Albums “hey day” and “Seance” are awesome 😎
This is one of those like 'Don't Dream It's Over' that we knew would be classic at first listen.
Absolute classic.
I have this as the very first song in my 80's playlist. I play it every time, and I never get tired of it always being there first.
Yo, check out my playlist called “Banger Album.” It’s a wonderful opener
You can tell Lex is feeling a fresh vib! I do every time I hear this song.
One of my favorite jams of the 80's. Church was a very underrated band.
Timeless PERFECTION! One of the best bands & songs EVER!
Sounds like Lex is a classic alternative fan at heart
Their manager absolutely loved this song when he first heard a demo. When The Church flew from Australia to Los Angelis to record the album that would be Starfish their manager badgered the producer to force the guys to record Under The Milky Way. Steve Kirby, who wrote and sang the song, was for some reason not eager to record it. I remember that the first time I heard it I was mesmerized.
So was I
Was so happy when this song finally won a poll. It’s one of the most atmospheric (no pun intended) songs I have ever heard. First found out about this song from the film “Donnie Darko.”
Perfect chorus for those suffering a Big Romance breakup, as I was when this cut was on the airwaves... The audio: fantastic mix, wonderful spacing, and one of my favorite snare sounds from the era.
Thank you guys from an Aussie girl who loves our music 🎶💋
The Church was always a great band and hsd brilliant albums through the 80s and 90s.
Beautiful song
I learned to play this on guitar to impress a girl... played it for her on a California beach back in the 80s. Everytime I hear it, I go back to that night, on that beach, watching the fires reflection dance in her eyes ...magic....
One of my favorite Aussie bands….Love the song!
There were many great Aussie/NZ “alternative” bands around this time. One of my favorites was Hunters & Collectors.
Also, those were SCOTTISH pipes.
Agreed about so many great Aussie and Kiwi alternative acts around this, especially Hunters and Collectors whom I managed to see tour NZ every time from 1982 on. But those Scottish pipes were not bagpipes - they used an ebow guitar recorded through a synclavier to achieve that sound.
@@robhaunui3343 I did not know that about the pipe sound. V clever. And that must have been a blast to see H&C so many times live.
@@Jabberwok28 yeah,it's an amazing effect they used to achieve that "bagpipe" sound - I read about it years ago,I think it was either Marty Wilson-Piper or Steve Kilbey who mentioned it. As for H&C,when their first EP "World Of Stone" came, that was it for me - their first tour of NZ was mid '82,and they probably toured here more than any other country apart from Australia of course. Also they had more chart success here than any other country including Oz. I think I've only seen 1 reaction to a H&C song in the past few years, which is a shame as they had so many great songs.
@@robhaunui3343 Not quite, they were a sample of african pipes played backwards on a synclavia - mixed with Ebow guitar. So it was a bit of both (there is an interview with Kilbey on Professor of Rock where he talks about that).
@@robhaunui3343 H&C 'Throw your arms around me' is a classic.
The Church also have dozens of brilliant songs which never made it to the radio like this classic. Worth some research. Gratitude.
Yet another great Australian Band. For a small country, they box above their weight musically.
Such a gem of a song
If you love the Church you will love "Echo and the Bunny men" and "Love and Rockets" I saw them all 3 in concert. They are all awesome in concert they sound just like they do on the album..
Love this tune, been listening to it for 30 years or so.Go out in the country lay back under the stars and listen to it.Awesome.
Under the southern cross
Very seductive song, atmospheric and ethereal.
One song from my teen years that sticks with me. Never gets old. I’d put them more in line with Echo and The Bunnymen than Tears for Fears. Although I love them both.
Moody! Melancholy! Minimalist! ahhh the 80's...
Classic Aussie rock. If they ever change the national anthem, I'd vote for this!
I thought this was their National Anthem!
They're from Australia and peaked in the 80s and early 90s. Lead vocalist/bassist Steve Kilbey likes to call their music "space rock", but I guess in the US they are classified as alternative. This song was their biggest hit, in 1988, but they never had the success they deserved. (That whole album - Starfish - is stellar, a classic). They do retain a cult following to this day though.
BTW that was an African Bagpipe. Yes it is preEmo - Closer to Goth We called it Swampy others -especially in the UK called it Dream Pop or even shoe gazer.
There is beauty in music that no other art can express...
THIS is an example of that! 😎💯 A painting or sculpture couldn't pass on what it feels like to hear this.
Lex is an instinctually perspicacious person. Fun to watch.
This song is often included in "One Hit Wonders" lists, but it's a great song. It's one of the songs in the soundtrack to "Donnie Darko", one of the great sci-fi movies of the last 20 years or so.
Thanks for this reaction!...One of my favorite bands back in the late 80's, early 90's!! I literally wore out the reels of the cassette of their older album, Heyday, which featured "Already Yesterday" and "Tantalize", two absolute classics. This album, Starfish, features a tune I also highly recommend, "Reptile". Lead singer, Steve Kilbey, is a highly talented musician and still does solo acoustic performances on his own YT channel today.
God I LOVE The Church. I never thought you would find them. They didn't many big singles in the US aside from this one and Reptile, but they had a string of absolutely stellar albums. They always looked cool and sounded even cooler, mixing 60's vibes and melodies with a little New Wave and alternative edge to make great songs that sounded like no one else.
There first album was a cracker , of skins and heart contains the unguarded moment maybe it’s the song they were most recognised for when they first formed but is where you live is my favourite on this album starts slow then builds and a very racy tune of electric gutairs
Brilliant 80's alternative-pop from the Aussie greats. Had this since it was released.
Still love it.
(Scottish bagpipes!)
absolutely ♥ this song! kinda alt 90s sounding 80s song
The Church were a genre of their own. Otherworldly. Late night driving alone kind of music.
Reptile, Myrrh and Metropolis next! The Church is one of the most influential bands of all time. Before Radiohead, Tool, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins there was The Church
As a hard rocker in the '80s, this was one of my favorite Goth New Wave Emo whatever you want to call it songs.
100% agree Lex ! This is music for people with high emotional IQs. Lol.
No seriously.
Songs like this have a spiritual intelligence to them that speak to the soul.
These are the types of songs that stay with you til you die because they are part of who you are.
agreed, well said!
Yes! Very well said.
Great album. Still one of my favorites. The layers upon layers of guitars is one of their signature sounds.
This song has always been a favorite, it just wasn't played enough on the radio.
It's 80's New Wave. Total classic!
I had never heard The Church until this song in 1988. I instantly fell in love with it. It’s off an excellent album titled Starfish. They are an unusual band that’s been around a long time. I’d call this song dreamy and definitely trippy.
The Church were associated with an indie sub category called dream pop. Definitely not goth though a lot of bands making introspective intelligent music in the 1980's have latterly wrongly being labelled as goth. A great song and great reaction by Lex.
They almost crossed over into a Dark Wave sound in a lot of their songs, more along the lines of Play Alone and Together in the Fall by Asylum Party.
m.ua-cam.com/video/VmNvxfvRSXA/v-deo.htmlm18s and
m.ua-cam.com/video/V-VPCHQrgKg/v-deo.html
I think their style of music fits in with House of Love, Luna, and possibly Crowded House's "Together Alone" album.
Always thought of them as New Wave, 80’s Alternative
Nice summary. I think Lex needs to check out Psychedelic Furs too. The Church was awesome.
@@andyscott5277 They have a lot in common with the Cure - obviously not as dark. But the emphasis on melodic bass, and Kilbey used a Bass VI (Like Robert Smith) a lot through their back catalogue. Both Kilbey and Smith have talked about how they admired each others work - and there is also a rumor that Love Song was heavily "influenced" by Under the Milky Way.
The Possibility Of UFO's/Extraterrestrials,, Strange Occurrences,, Unexplained Mysteries = Fleetwood Mac "Hypnotized"...An ABSOLUTE Classic.
Brilliant band - dream-pop rather than goth or emo. This and "Metropolis" were their big international hits, but they've had a huge string of top albums. I'd recommend "Just for You", "Reptile", "The Unguarded Moment", and "Electric Lash" as a Church sampler.
Also the bagpipe sound is just played on a guitar using an MIDI effect I believe. They also use a 12-string acoustic, which is why it sounds a bit fuller
it was sampled backwards bagpipes
@@trevorjohnstone4744 You're both kinda correct - it's backwards sampled african bagpipes played on a synclavia mixed with Ebow guitar.
Lex would definitely like The Plimsouls. I recommend their songs ‘A Million Miles Away’, and ‘Oldest Story In The World’
One of my favorite songs of all time!
Reminds me of driving around on my day off in the nineties with my friends from a rough neighborhood (pizza places wouldn't deliver there). We'd end up clubbing in Chicago. This was on the radio in the car a lot of the time.
Good times.
Your first assessment is spot-on, Lex! You don't get any more of a soothing, melancholy, dare I say, "goth-like" chill vibe than these guys. Both albums Starfish and Heyday are perfect in that sense.
Glad you found this beautiful song. A bit similar in style to Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon that you reacted to April 27, 2022.
The perfect album to close out the 80s and transition into the 90s.
With Sufer Rosa and Daydream Nation
@@NoName-tn1ut I'll trade you Surfer Rosa for Doolittle.
Have forgotten this song. Been 25 yrs or so since i have listened. Great Song
I love The Church so underrated. I listened to their album Gold Afternoon Fix in constant loop in 10th grade. It’s so nostalgic and haunting from first listen.
This song and this band has been one of my all time favorites since the 80's (Yes I am that old). Their album Starfish is flawless, one of the rare albums where every song is amazing.
Lex, my kind of emotional music, too!
💯🙌🏻
This song gives me a sinking/falling feeling these days... I just close my eyes, when I listen it... And it takes me on a trip... More so in the last couple of years.
Oh my God, so good, you're taking me back with this one , love it.
One of my favorite songs. I could watch Lex smile all day! Thanks for this one. 🤙🏽 🌌
"Metropolis" and "You're Still Beautiful" are hidden gems by these guys...
Entire album was awesome! Great memories of this time! Great song!
Lex of course hears the details. Yes, bagpipes are part of this awesome Australian band's song.
I miss the days when all the big cities had ACTUAL alternative radio stations, and a lot of the Universities and colleges did, too. You could spend your days and nights getting washed in beautiful sounds like this and hear songs you never imagined existed. Now it’s all pay-to-play garbage like I Heart Radio crap and you really have to go searching for the good stuff online because none of the radio stations will play it.
You live in the wrong place then... BTW, a lot of those "stations" are online and you can listen to them live through the internet on your phone or whatever.
Yes indeed!
91X in San Diego recently changed their format back to more of the original alternative music! Been listening literally since day one and love it!
What are their call letters?@@RonRezendes

Love it! Back in Australia The Church were a breath of fresh air in the 80s, definitely not emo or goth, certainly laid back and not in your face. They wrote songs that once heard would attach to you for your entire life. For me it's the same for Fade into You by Mazzy Star, so much meaning and soul.
Very under rated band and song!!
This is definitely one of coolest songs ever produced. It's one of my all time favorites and I'm very surprised it's getting a listen/reaction. When this song is over the only word you should utter is "incredible" or "what did I just hear" as it has this pensive, deeper sense to it that really drives deep into you. Thank God I grew up during the New Wave invasion of the 80's....just so much incredible music. You can listen to new wave forever.
I remember hearing this when it came out and wondering why they never got more airplay. Great band.
Lex is so into the music..I dig that
Lex is the coolest ever discovering new music
IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU LISTEN TO THIS
This song crossed boundaries in the 80s, even my rocker pals and I enjoyed the hell out of it. This, and I Melt With You by Modern English, are probably my 2 favorite new wave singles from that decade. "Wish I knew what you were looking for...might have known what you would find" was my lonely anthem for a couple of years back then, haha.
I’ve seen them live 12 times. Most amazing guitar duo band. Peter Koppes and Marty Wilson-Piper were amazing. And Kilbey can write a song.
They were great. '80s, '90s post-punk, indie/alt rock, shoegaze/physchedilc, somewhat darkwave (goth new wave) band. Like REM, Mazzy Star, Psychedelic Furs, Inxs, Love and Rockets, Echo and the Bunnymen 🐰. Donnie Darko movie. "Ripple", "Metropolis" and " Reptile" are good videos from them, too. Yes, those are bagpipes. Maybe for some more similar bands later for yall to check out?! Sioxsee and the Banshees, The Cure, Clan of Xymox, etc. 🌙
UA-cam automatically plays Echo and the Bunnymen right after I pick this song.
Yes, I put Psychedelic Furs, Love and Rockets, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure, and The Church in the same category. Same mood.
I was really young, but the only label I heard for this type of music was new wave or alternative. I just loved it all. The one thing that you could count on was some amazing type of sound as a vocal from those early new wave days.
Don't really know much about this band, but really loved this song. I think I recorded in on VHS off of 120 minutes on MTV back in the day. Really chill and melodic.
Goths are just dark souls with colourful hearts
Always loved this song. The melody of it is fairly simple, but their instrumentation on it is so lush and beautiful. (And how many rock songs are there with bagpipes in them?!)
Haven’t heard this in over 35 years and still know the words. Had this on vinyl.
I' feel you and am so with you on this one Lex like TFF it's that next realm of smoothness of the soul.
I live in the land down under and was privileged to listen to many talented rock bands . The Church were a good band .
Need to cut back on the rolling Stones and
Zeppelin every week and start doing some of these bands. Expand your horizon
The Church helped to cross the awful 80's with their splendid psych-pop full of guitars and gorgeous melodies. This song is a complete classic. And Steve Kilbey's voice!
Well said, spot on.
Was used very excellently in the movie, Donnie Darko.. a cult classic, sci-fi, time travel, sort of enigmatic mystery movie..
