    Pretty sure this is too old for you to see my comment, but just in case: Novice turner here & I really admire your skill & your work. I've got carbides and pretty sure they have their place- but I started with traditional tools. Your instruction on correct tool use & turning techniques are invaluable. Thanks so much for all you've done for the turning community.

      Some turners use larger donut chucks for reversing bowls to finish off the bottom.

    I know the video is a few years old now Mike, but I have been subscribed for a few months. I am learning a lot from you. I am about to attemt a scoop. I do like the tip about the PVC round as a guide, but it made me smile when you said you had a high spot and needed to remove the 'Corner'. Big thanks mike

    Love the Donut Chuck. Made one today. Way better than the jig I had made for my first coffee scoop. I added a layer of plywood about 9 inch diameter on the headstock side to warn/protect from going too close to the handle of the scoop. Wish I could upload a pic. Tomorrow I start turning some scoops.

    great video mike,,,i made me a coffee scoop today and made your jig,,,had a little trouble with the jig but its coming along,,to hollow it out I removed one jaw from my chuck and it held it good,,but of course there was an indention in the wood from the jaws,,i was sanding it out then got an idea,,i put burn marks on it where the wood was indented,,never knew it was on the chuck,,thanks ever so much,,love your videos,,lol,,that's how I get educated,,lol

    Great tutorial, Mike! Those coffee scoops look wonderful. Love the chuck but it does make me nervous with that "invisible" handle spinning around. Just have to remember it's there and work accordingly -LOL

      You can do it! Just keep all parts of your hand on the right side of the tool rest.

    Good morning Mike. I have attempted a scoop with my first donut chuck. It is a scoop to be sure but there is lots of room for improvement on both the scoop and the chuck. If I can figure out how to post a pic I will. Thank you for your instruction and efforts. Have an amazing day.

    I like the idea of the donut chuck, seems safer than the spigot chuck I'm currently using for coffee scoops. I suppose a larger diameter front plate could be added as a barrier to the spinning handle for safety & comfort while turning..

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 років тому +1

      There are other ways of holding including jam chucks and wooden jaws. It took a couple of hours to make the donut but I have turned a lot of these since then as I probably made it 8 years ago.

    I am really enjoying your videos Mike. Thank you so much for sharing your skills. You are doing a great job and have been very helpful as I am hooked on turning now for a little over a year. I'm following your build on this donut chuck and would like a clarification on the 1 1/2" hole in the donut. Does that 1 1/2" go straight thru to the backplate - plus the round over? That would mean that the 1 1/2 is the stop on the 1 3/4" ball. Yes? So, if I wanted to make the scoop diameter 2" OD, what would your recommendation be for the donut hole? I am thinking 1 5/8 or 1 3/4. Would greatly appreciate your feedback comment if you have time. Thanks again

    Hey Mike, I'm learning lots from all of your videos. A note on safety shouldn't you remove your ring before working on the lathe or any rotating machinery. I want to keep you healthy so you can teach me more from your videos. Keep up the good work! Thanks again

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  8 років тому +1

      +oljswartz Possible? Of course. People have to make a personal choice on how far they go. Personally, I see little risk to me based on my turning style and projects of getting my ring crushed and losing a finger. I weigh the risks of sticking the ring in a pocket with a hole in it and losing it. Or leaving it in a safe place in my shop and forgetting to put it on. Do what is right for you.

  • @steveng6269
    @steveng6269 5 років тому +1

    Yes I did. Thanks again. Couldn’t I use a 1 5/8” Forster bit and then just round the donut hole?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 років тому

      Not the way I would do it. I see no advantage of doing it your way. It may not give you a rounde hole that will maximize contact with the ball Since you will a cylindrical wall.

    would it work to add a piece/ flag od blue tape to the end of the handle to make it more visable while in the donut chuck? looking forward to trying this project

  • @mrjoeyman
    @mrjoeyman Рік тому

    Couldn't you put the bowl on a drill press while its in the doughnut and make the initial scoop hole with a large drill bit? Or for that matter couldn't you just drill it on the lathe itself with your drill attachment? It makes me wonder if a fine hole saw bit would work also.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  Рік тому

      Try it one time and see if you would be happy. I think not. It is not that difficult hollowing.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 років тому

      That would work. The more you practice turning a ball the better you get. I have probably done a thousand angel ornaments which involves turning a sphere for a head. ua-cam.com/video/QTtQB6Jly_8/v-deo.html

    I got an email requesting more information about the calipers I was using. Here was my response:
    I made my calipers from music wire from a hobby shop. It is the same kind of wire I used for making the shafts of my awls in my awl making video. The diameter is probably not critical. It is probably about 1/8". It is springy but retains its shape once formed, something that coat hanger wire for example won't do. It fits into the scoop and you feel how snug it is. The goal is to form a shape that will fit into a scoop and the legs will be about the distance to just fit the final inside dimension with little friction. Too much friction and you have to hollow some more.

    Have you considered using a 1 1/4 inch forstner bit to drill your pilot hole into your measuring scoop?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  4 роки тому

      No. I see no advantage as you still have to clean up the bottom where the bit left a hole as well as thin the walls to a uniform thickness for appearance. I do not see the drill bit saving time. But that is me. If it works for you, great.

    How much coffee does this scoop hold? Approximately.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  3 роки тому

      3 scoops is 9 cups of coffee at my taste. So maybe 3 tablespoons. It doesn't make any difference since everyone makes coffee differently and your scoop szie might be diffrent from mine. ONly needs calibrating once.
