    Will admit these 2p locomotives are really nice. The arrangement of the 4-4-0 wheels also is something i want to get on my layout. I’ll be checking out hattons soon to get me one of these to run on my layout. Such a lovely model in its livery. Thanks for sharing this, Clint at Leila Central

    The odd one out is Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 Mogul 46521, originally preserved on the Severn Valley Railway. She has the nickname Mickey Mouse (also the proper name of my first favourite Disney Character created by Walt Disney himself on 18th November 1928).

    Fun Fact: The Rev W Awdry had a Class 2P for his model of Edward since there was no model of Edward's basis (FR K2 Class) at the time and even today. The model was fitted with a Stewart Reidpath motor which was then donated to Thomas' main model when his motor failed. Edward is now on static display at the Talyllyn railway

    I just got one of these. I paid the full RRP because the BR Black ones are really rare. I'm fine with the price I paid because I've seen the review and know what to expect. The detail doesn't bother me at all so hopefully I will like this model more than you did!

    When this model came out it was its last hurrah in main super detailed range as it was dropped the year after. It may return at some point in the Railroad range which will be more acceptable.
    Also Sam I have a interesting challenge as Hornby have just released a trainset for the family for £350 with apparently all of the scenic items, track, buildings, figures and loco and wagons. I think a review and building session is to be done.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 років тому

      Thanks Ben. Yes it’d be nice to see this in the railroad range! That’s be awesome, but just too expensive for one video, and at a look, too expensive for a family to justify - that’s a serious enthusiast price tag!!

    I remember seeing one of these each night during the very early 1960's, running light engine towards the Erewash Valley line and perhaps on their way for scrapping. T.W.Ward's didn't break any, so it was possibly a Sheffield breaker that disposed of them.

    Other than the buffers being picked out in silver rather than black, and a different coupling (excluding the mechanism it looks) fairy incidental to when Dapol released no.45 in the same livery (D67).
    The biggest thing seems to be that the Dapol version has a crest that this one doesn't, on the front splasher. (I wonder which one is more correct or if both is right.)
    and the gap (to me, comparing the picture on screen to the one in my hand) between loco and cab seems smaller.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Yeah you're right - I'm not aware of any major changes made to this by Hornby! You may be right about the loco-tender gap, they could well have modified the drawbar during their conversion!

    Hornby, have improved now on info, Sam but I would not have paid the price for it. I think Mr. Hornby is seeing to that! I hate traction tyres, with a venous. No need for them in this day and age. It is an old model and things have moved on but, I like the livery. You are right on the review.

    Might I recommend a Heljan diesel model? The BR Class 17 Clayton diesel. They are rather interesting, and stylish in my opinion. The real life Claytons were prone to engine problems and were withdrawn after not even 10 years of service. From videos I've seen of the model, this tick doesn't seem to carry over thankfully. haha

    This model was given to me for my birthday earlier this year. I do agree with you that it's not up to the standards for a Railways branded model which is a shame though I too do still like it. The good thing on mine is although there is still a bit of a gap between the cab and fire box, the cab does seem to be straight.
    To say that Hornby are not doing this sort of thing today isn't quite true though. All you need to do is compare their BR MK1 coaches from the two ranges and you will find that they are one and the same bar a few extra painted details on the Railways branded version. Is that worth doubling the price? Apparently the MK2's are the same.

    I paid the same price for mine three years ago so don’t feel alone there and at the time I also thought that was a decent price, personally I think despite its price it is one of the smoothest and reliable locos in my collection, and after three years in my collection I’d say I’m still glad I picked it up, just need more excuses to run it ;)

    If ever a model needed a complete re-tool to current standards, its this LMS 2P. Midland 4-4-0s are such lovely proportioned locomotives, someone really should pick up the baton. I'd go so far as to say I'd prefer Bachmann to tackle one, ideally the MR 483 class to take advantage of their Johnson tender from the 3F and 4F for a bit more variety and so as not to duplicate this Horfix LMS version.

    I think the only advantage to them still selling it as a premium model is that they do it in a better livery. Take the jinty thats s&d and it has no lining though that is accurate its still not quite as amazing. Also as for the similarity between 0-6-0 and 4-4-0 stems from triang days with there standard chassis just remotored with cheap chainese motors

    I have one of these but No.45. The cab is straight and not bent backwards so I'm guessing that is a manufacturing fault with yours. I paid £75 for mine brand new in 2019, which is about the correct price or such a model. The traction tyres kept coming off on 2nd radius curves which was immensely frustrating. So I took them off and it now runs without them. The downside of that is adhesion. Very poor, so it is limited to 3 coaches or 7 or so goods wagons, although photos of 2Ps with a goods train seem to be very rare since the loco was not classified to pull freight. Some of the adhesion issues are due to graphite on my track. However, it runs perfectly and smoothly and has never stalled on any of my 20 or so dead frog points. Yes it lacks detail but from a short distance away whilst running, you can't tell.

  • @FlyingScott

    I'm always a wee bit thrown off by Railroad-like locos. The Railroad Schools are also around 100 quid, but those are far more complex models. But are the 2Ps worth 100, when the Schools are too? And should the Schools even be 100? Puzzling stuff, puzzling stuff...

    Hi Sam.
    My Name is Nathan Antwhistle. I'm an Australian model railway enthusiast and I stumbled across your channel back in 2017 when searching model trains on UA-cam. I watch your reviews to see if the trains are worth buying or not. I have a HO/OO gauge train set that is mostly Hornby and Bachmann products. I set it up outside on my days off or on the weekend's if the weather is nice. I usually get most of my stuff from relatives that live in England for Christmas and Birthday. But I do have some questions for you.
    Where do you get your models from?
    Where did you get those patches of scenery I see in your videos?
    What set would you recommend for someone who is thinking of starting to use DCC and TTS locomotives?
    Where did you get those American engines with Hornby hooks?
    I look forward to more of your great content.
    Sincerely, Nathan Antwhistle.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 років тому

      Hey Nathan, thanks so much for your kind comment!
      I get most of my models from Hatton's and train fairs. I built the scenery myself. I don't think there are any TTS sets out there, but a good DCC set to begin with is the Hornby Somerset Belle! I put the Hornby hooks onto my US stock myself!
      Hope this helps mate,
      Cheers,
      Sam :)

    Just a thought, do you think the tender-driven version crawls better because the tender's wheels are smaller?

    • @SamsTrains

      Yes that's a possibility - though with the right gearing, a loco should be able to crawl regardless of the wheel size! I'd have to investigate that! :D

    I really like the engine but what really has put me off buying the Hornby 2P is that gap between boiler and cab and the way the cab and rear splasher just don't sit right on the chassis. Otherwise I would have bought a second hand one ages ago. I wouldn't even buy a railroad series model if it had this fault as it just spoils a model if it isn't put together straight. It's like a crooked painting on a wall; just nags me.

    To be fair if the cab was actually fitted straight, the cab floor might line up a bit better with the tender 😂 and I don't think there are many nicer liveries than the s&djr prussian blue ones... there probably weren't that many loco's that ran on those lines, but they could release any loco in that livery and I'd probably buy it 😂

It'll be the first non-lego related thing I do on my channel and I have an idea of what wagons and breakvans to use but I'm not sure what locomotive to use. I would like to go with small steam locos. But something that was popular to be seen round Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
    I was wondering what small locos would fit in that sort of area?
