    I've learned that many DMs (like myself) have homebrewed how invisibility works without realizing it! If you plan to use the invisible stalker, stick around for a summary of the actual rules...and an awesome alternative to the invisible stalker :D

      Thank you very much for clarifying that. I’m very confused regarding invisibility and such. Like combat in darkness when a hexblade warlock uses devils sight. It should be the same. Hide and let the other guess or don’t hide and they don’t have to guess

    "So once your party discovers one of these pit traps by one of the big glowing orbs, they probably won't fall for this trick again."
    All 3, my players fell for all 3. After the first one, they had one player poking at the floor. However, as soon as they saw a glowing orb, one would go 'I run to attack it', forgetting to check the floor.
    When the player fell into the last one cried out 'another pit trap!' I said 'Yes, and it's five feet in front of the willow wisp, just like it was with the previous two.'

    For the false tomb I had the bard roll a history check, to realize that the people named/depicted on the trapped tombs aren't in the legends surrounding that party of dragonslayers. I then did the reverse on the real tombs to encourage them to open them

    One weird thing about the Dragon Barrow encounter is that there's no clear intent from the writers about what the deal is with the skeletal horse. They say it "bonds with any character who wants to ride it." OK, but then what -- What's its name (the crab problem from Tower of Storms again), can it leave the barrow (up the 2' wide spiral stairs?), is it usable as a mount in the outside world, why is it undead, does it become a regular horse again? So many questions. For my run, I said "eff it" and made a backstory for the horse as I knew my players would befriend it -- The horse's name was Galathea, and it was a fae warhorse belonging to Lady Tanamere. It's fae origin meant that it didn't die fighting the green dragon, it just fell into a death-like state. When the heroes were buried, the horse was placed in the barrow as well and became a skeleton, waiting for another noble warrior to come and awaken it. The party's folk hero barbarian was ready to attack when the horse reformed, but paused and waited to see what happened first -- then when she saw that the horse wasn't aggressive, they became good friends. One of the party members had the mold earth cantrip, so I hand waved getting it out of the barrow as them widening the stairs 5' at a time to help it pass. And now the barbarian has a dragon slayer sword AND a friendly skeleton horse and she's super happy!

    Another hook would be to have a townsperson warn the party that dragon cultists are trying to steal the sword to make sure no hero gets it, thus protecting and attempting to earn the favor of the dragon.

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 роки тому +1

      Wow! I love that idea! Dragon cultists could make more sense than the orcs as a subset of enemies for the campaign. Guessing WotC would have gone that route, but they already have the whole Tyranny of Dragons books :p

    Hello! Idk if anyone will see this comment, but I was just looking through the module and there’s something I thought of would be just a neat little description.
    In the room with the fireball necklace it says that there’s the bones of a bard, cleric, fighter, and wizard. What if you changed the bones to be the exact classes that your party is at? It doesn’t add any extra combat and maybe you’d have to change the bard’s illusion lute, but I think it would be a fun to portray it as “this could be you...” idk! Haven’t tried it, just thought it was a neat little bit of food for thought!

    My players were scared of the "witch lights". They didn't really want to go in. Finally, they built up the courage to explore, went straight to the dust trap and all took a face full of damage. They then went straight into a pit trap and fought a wisp that they couldn't even hit, let alone damage. Eventually, they decided to flee, seal the entrance by knocking down the "spine" to cover the hole and never wanted to go back again. The party consisted of 3 level 4 characters (rogue, figher, druid) and a weak level 3 fighter companion (one of the dwarves that survived from dwarven excavation that joined them).

  • @PastorCleveland

    Love the Skeleton Dragon at the end! That's definitely a must do, especially since there's already an invisible stalker later in the game. I decided to change up one of the pit traps. The eastern trap is fake. When the players step on it or discover it, the will-o-wisp disappears into D7. In front of the Northeast tomb of D7 there is an illusory ceiling (silent image) with a gelatinous Cube in the space above! A Creature that steps into that square will have a cube land on them and have to dex save or be engulfed. My favorite part is that even if the party dispels or discovers the silent image ceiling, they still might not see the cube, since they are virtually invisible when sitting still. Once the Cube attacks, so does the waiting Will-o-wisp. The cube has stopped would-be tomb robbers before, which is why the other two adventurer sarcophagi are empty.

    I ran this today and took a lot of your suggestions. The Party started at the tail and worked their way to the head. I used a Bone Naga instead of an Invisible Stalker. And as they left, the Wizard went to get the horse. I made it have the stats of a Medium Warhorse, and it eats Magic Spells. It started life as a Magic Steed and will be eating 3 cantips a day just to survive, but it will also eat spells cast by and at it's Wizard. This should be funny.

    I am running this campaign and your videos have been helpful. I know at the beginning of your video you mention that the anchorites aren't necessarily evil but i read somewhere that it becomes clear in the two expansion modules that the anchorites were the ones controlling the white dragon cryovain. I haven't explored those follow up modules but planned on trying to flesh this out somehow within the end battle.

    That’s much better than the invisible stalker. The story telling is better, the challenge better prepares them for cryovain and the battle makes sense for the magical item. It also allows newer players to test how this sword works (assuming they can identify it first).
    I think I’ll prepare both options, and if they identify the sword before picking it up, they get the dragon, if not, they get the invisible stalker.

    Great tips & break down as usual! I too enjoyed Sly Flourish's ending undead dragon encounter & may use that for my game. I will say I am considering lowering the dc for the strength check to open the tombs as I would hate for my group to miss out on those magic items as its a small group & 1 is a hard. Thanks Bob!

      Thank you! Yes, I let my PCs work together and they still struggled a bit to meet the sarcophagus DC, so lowering it is a good idea. @@BobWorldBuilder So one of the players wanted to keep the skeleton horse and named it Vicenton. This same player wanted to buy the ox Vincent from Barthen. They also used the Pole of Collapsing they got in Gnomengarde to activate the traps under the will o wisps, and thought the wisps just wanted to warn them. My party is three fourth-level players, so I left the Invisible Stalker. The invisible stalker managed to knock unconscious the player that took the sword, and I had it pick it up, and put it back where it was, move to a corner, and stand still. Since it had several arrows stuck to it, the other two players could still see him and finished him off. They then stabilized the fallen character, and left with the skeletal horse. They asked the centaur to carry the unconscious player back to Phandalin, and the other two followed him on the skeletal horse. We ended the session at the Inn, where they got someone to treat the player's wounds.
      They plan to back to the Barrow the next day and retrieve the sword.

      @DeCurtisProductions 4 роки тому +1

      @@BobWorldBuilder I found it funny too. Since no one fell on the traps, I had the wisps stay passive, and they just thanked the wisps for helping. I came up with the arrow thing on the fly. I thought it would make sense at the time.

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 роки тому +2

      @@DeCurtisProductions The arrow thing does make sense! I ran the stalker as if it were made of air, but I think that was just my interpretation. If it has a body, the arrows would definitely be stuck floating in it. As for the wisps, it's always funny when the players totally misinterpret something, but there are no consequences for it xD

    Bob, this is my first D&D adventure and I’m DMing for my two young boys who are about to head to Dragon Barrow. Thanks for your videos. The invisible stalker is going to be a challenge and I know others have presented a different challenge. I was thinking of making it dusty to the point where the invisible stalker becomes visible to a certain extent as the dust settles on him/her so that the characters have a better chance of landing some attacks. There are only 2 PCs in the group along with a sidekick. Would sure appreciate your thoughts on this approach.

    • @BobWorldBuilder

      Hey, it's awesome that you're running D&D for your kids! In my session, I think I had the arrows and perhaps some spell effects get caught in the invisible stalker to somewhat reveal its location. Dust can work, but it'll be more fun if it's caused by the actions of the characters :)

    The undead dragon is a nice effect for flavor, but I feel like it would outshine the appearance of the real dragon, the actual villain and main focus of the story. I'm not sure what solution I'll end up using yet. Maybe an earth elemental instead? Not sure. I feel like this quest should be used as the final preparations for fighting the dragon, since that is the ultimate goal and the book as written doesn't really do a good job of preparing the players for a fight with a dragon, other than the sword.
    I plan on adding a few extra magic items, one in each of the heroes' coffins, that can be useful. These were heroes that died fighting a dragon, so it seems logical that they would have been prepared.
    The dragon guard breastplate from Lost Mine of Phandelver would be a perfect item to place in here. Maybe a cloak of displacement or protection in another coffin. And while the sword itself is great, you still need to get into melee range to use it. Getting into melee range of a dragon isn't always a great idea, I feel like heroes trying to kill a dragon would have some sort of ranged weapon, so I created a Javelin of Dragon Slaying. It's a regular +1 javelin with the same bonus vs dragons as the sword has. There'll be three of those. I think the limited range on the javelin helps balance it vs finding a bow or something.

    • @Rakshael
      @Rakshael 2 роки тому +1

      I'm gonna reflavor it as the spirit of the dragonslaying warrior herself, or at least some shade of her, that's looking to test a would-be hero's resolve and make sure they have the heroism and/or skill to fight a dragon
      I agree that making it a dragon's skeleton takes away from Cryovain's perceived level of threat

    I’m probably going to have dust fall when they take the sword and have the stalker challenge them… the dust will allow for the party to slightly see the stalker… only enough so he still attacks with advantage and them disadvantage, but without him also being able to hide because of the dust settled upon his outline. They will have the green and white dragons to fight already (from both starter sets) and they are moving on to a bastardised version of princes of the apocalypse after this…. Which also has a much larger Green in Kyrptgarden forest, if the party still want to hunt down dragons.

    I am DMing this module and have really appreciated your video guides. I have just a couple of thoughts and would love your feedback. 1) the parts where you suggest a modification to the module as written, could you put the text of it in your notes section or a minute marker with a title. Like "Boar-ing Encounter" for Logger Camp? Your suggestions are great but I have to keep rewatching the video or screen shot your cool ideas 2) Because the Half Orcs are worshipping Talos, The Destroyer/The Storm Lord, a Chaotic Evil deity of destruction I considered they were also evil. The Anchorite stat block also indicates as such: they are neutral evil. The follow up modules to DoISP all play off that Talos is being his evil bad self, and is working to take over the entire sword coast. So please help me understand what I am missing? I understand what WotC has announced the diversity change that not all humanoid type creatures (orcs, goblins, hobgoblins, etc) are evil monsters as a race and didnt know if that was playing into this theory that they are only defending their territory. Thanks for all that you do.

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 роки тому

      Thank you! And I'm always grateful for feedback :) 1 My video scripts for these guides are all available for download on Patreon at the Pillar tier, and I like keeping that as a special thing for my Patrons. For some of the longer video guides, I may add timestamps in the future, but probably not for short ones like Loggers' Camp. 2 The book SAYS they're evil every chance it gets, but in my opinion, the most evil thing the half orcs do is defend their home from the loggers by summoning monsters there. The half orcs could be any other kind of creature, and I would look at it the same way. Basically, the book provides little to no evidence that they are evil. Now the ORCS slaughtered a bunch of presumably innocent people at the ranch, so yeah, they're bad guys as far as I'm concerned. It's all up to you as the DM, but it's good to consider this stuff! :)

    If you make a young green dragon boss, that is a tougher enemy than Cryovain. In fact, the difficulties of allot of encounters is this campaign feels way off.

      You're not wrong! This series addresses many of those way-off-balance encounters, but it also suggests fun twists that are often just as unbalanced!

    Hi I am currently running this campaign with my group. My group decided they wanted to complete woodland manse before dragon barrow. Have any ideas on how to spin the centaur? I was thinking on just ignoring the second part he mentions, but I wasn't sure.

    Our DM felt the quest was still too easy for our 7 character party of 5th level, so he boosted the whisps to use their life drain on any characters within 5 feet. It was a challenge, but once we were able to strategize and plan, they became a lot less terrifying. Until the stalker that is.

    I just finished playing through this with my group and my dm decided to follow some of this advice, adding in the dragon boss and it felt fucking awful. We went to go get a sword to have a better chance at the dragon, and instead had to fight a dragon that was WAY scarier than the actual final boss, which takes away a lot of the fear. Especially since my battlemaster barbarian who picked up the sword used riposte when it missed and then on his turn instantly crit it with a bunch of nova damage into action surge to attack again and kill it round 1. so now I am just without any excitement for the final boss cause i just one rounded a way, way scarier fight.

    Hi Bob! I just wanted to say how helpful these videos are for me! I'm running the dragon of ice spire peak as DM for my husband (this is our first D&D campaign, so being new to not only the game, but DM-ing is a challenge, but fun). My question I have for you is this: The sword you get from this quest is a long sword! My husband (the only player) is a rogue, and the npc sidekick is a cleric (both not proficient)! Should I change the longs word to a short sword? I didn't notice it when I gave the card to him, and he sounded so defeated when he said, "I can't even use this." I told him I could change it to a short sword, but he's kind of a stickler and said it felt like cheating. And since that was basically the only reward for the quest, he seemed kind of slighted. I'm wondering if you have a cleaver way to spin this? What would seem fair to you? I was thinking maybe just having him be able to sell it for a ton, or having him be able to trade it for a cool/modified crossbow that gives him some sort of advantage over his current weapon at the lionshield coster?

      Hey, thank you for commenting! It's great to hear that the series has been helpful you to in your first adventure as a DM! :) I have no issue with changing the sword: we made it a greatsword so it would make more sense for Grace's "great weapon" style fighter. Of course now it would like your changing it after the fact (because you are), but D&D is not a game that is meant to be run by the book! In the core rule book for D&D, the Players Handbook, it states somewhere early on that the only rules that matter are the ones that make the game more fun at your table. You are free to change anything however and whenever you like. So if changing it now would make it less fun for your husband, then don't, but talk with him about how the game is meant to be reconfigured by the DM, and you just missed that little detail :)

      @@BobWorldBuilder Thanks so much for replying :)! I will talk with him and see what he would like to do with it. We play a loooot of board games, so I think he gets into his head about rules I guess? I don't know, but either way, I will come up with a solution :)! Thanks for all the advice! I'm still learning, but so far we have had a lot of fun ❤️

      My brother in law is the same way lol, loves board games and video games, but the open ended nature of D&D is too wishy-washy for him. He's only played once though, so I'm sure you'll be able to convert your husband! :)

      I know this is a year old but, rogues are proficient with longswords. The only thing that would prevent him from using it is having a low strength score, since longswords use strength for the modifier. Even then, he could still use it, it just wouldn't be as effective as a dex based finesse weapon. But the workaround for that is in the game, all he needs is the gauntlets of ogre power and he'll have 19 strength. Then he won't have any issues using it.

    I shortened the journey to 1 day, as you suggested, and the party found the Dragon Barrow using what appeared to be a recipe, which they had found at Axeholm, but Adabra was able to determine contained hidden directions. (Xanth played no role in this quest.)
    They were able to find the entrance, and coincidentally opted to explore the four sections in the perfect order (south, east, west, north) so I'm glad I didn't rearrange anything.
    I replaced the invisible stalker with an adult skeletal dragon (worldbuilderblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/skeletal-dragons.pdf). Note that this is a huge creature, and an ancient dragon would still be less than half the size of the barrow.
    I really had a problem with the narrow tunnel trap. As written: "Only a creature that is not trapped in the tunnel can clear away the collapse, using an action to open up the 5-foot-deep section of tunnel closest to it."
    So anyone not trapped can clear 5 feet every 6 seconds? That sounds completely unreasonable, and effectively means if everyone gets trapped then everyone dies, but if anyone doesn't get trapped, then there's nothing to fear, since anyone can hold their breath for at least 10 rounds.
    I decided that with a successful DC 11-15 Athletics check, a creature that is not trapped in the tunnel can clear away a 1-5-foot-deep section of tunnel closest to it in a minute, and with a successful DC 20 Athletics check, a creature that IS trapped in the tunnel can clear away a 1-foot-deep section of tunnel closest to it in a minute.
    What do you think?

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  3 роки тому

      Yeah I think adding any check to give them a better chance at escape is nice. Just not too good because you want to mention the tension that this sort of trap creates!

      @@BobWorldBuilder My main problem with RAW was that they could clear 5 feet every 6 seconds. That didn't seam plausible, so I basically changed that to 5 feet every minute.

      Initially I thought the breath weapon may be too strong so I was going to remove it, but I figured the fight would be more interesting of the dragon can do more stuff. Reducing the save DC or damage dice, or only giving it one use, could make it work for your party

      @@BobWorldBuilder While I'm sure it was just introduced for funsies by being an odd thing to be rewarded along with the magic items in the barrow, I personally would give it character.
      For example, whereas the dragon slaying hero it served moved on they did not. It still has fight in it, one last ride before it moves on. So when you beat Cryovein, it becomes fulfilled and the party can have a heartfelt goodbye. Or maybe the negative energy from the will-o'-wisps animated it and now only its memories of serving the hero remain, so when you take the sword it assumes you're the hero and becomes your mount. Following you until you die, serving whoever wields the sword until the negative energy that gave it unlife fades away.
