    Wow! You guys have had some great suggestions! The crab being the transformed lover of the banshee?? Great stuff! And it seems like "Sebastian" is the most popular name for our chitinous friend :)

    • @Ciofey
      @Ciofey 3 роки тому

      Sebastian is the name of the lizard in the PAX Acq Inc Tomb of Horror game with Chris Perkins. Crazy fun stage roleplaying. I would go with another crab name, to be able to incorporate that stupidly funny lizard without... confuSION. ;)

    • @Ciofey
      @Ciofey 3 роки тому

      Either that, or have the crab talk just like Sebastian the Lizard from that game. Link:

      It starts at the 25-minute mark, and just gets more and more hilarious.

    You video helped me a lot with this location, thanks!
    One of the characters in my session threw Moesko the Anchorite into the sea after killing him. I then let the sharks eat him instead of attacking the characters while they were diving for the treasures, essentially bypassing the shark fight.

    Harpies are some of my favourite creatures, though I've never used them as a DM. I think they're monstrous in just the right way, sky sirens hitting the party with witchy vibes. I remember hitting them as a player in Princes of the Apocalypse, and my +lots Athletics Barbarian being drawn to their song and climbing 60ft to meet them, eventually snapping back to reality like Slim Shady and crash tackling one to the ground from a lethal height. But that's just me.

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 роки тому +4

      That is some truly epic barbarian shenanigans. And agree they are awesome lore-loaded creatures, but I straight up never noticed they speak common until writing this video, and since I have always been a little weirded out by their monster manual art piece, that put it over the top for me. And of course due to other recent events, I wanted to add a note about respect.

    In my game, the giant crab's name was Parsnip. He was super friendly, and had a slightly twangy Boston accent. XD After my players retrieved the conch shell for his banshee master, he was more than happy to go diving for treasure for them (at least once), and also for some fresh fish for one of my Tabaxi players!

      Hahaha xD I wish I came up with that! I had the name "Milton" in mind, but my fiancee didn't ask. And I love the idea of him fishing for your tabaxi party member. Such a good crab!

    I named my crab BigClaw and had him speak in an unusual way, by me running my finger up and down my lips to create a burbling voice. My players loved it and had to listen very intently to try and understand what he was saying, which created such a cool atmosphere. This was after two of my players failed Athletics checks trying to get down a slippery path and feel flat on their faces in the sand in front of the crab!

    Been enjoying your videos. Have watched everyone before running the encounter. On this particular encounter I had the harpies singing songs about wings and falling such as The wind beneath my wings and free falling when they were luring the players off the cliff. One cool thing I wish i would have done. Once Moeako heart was destroyed I had the players that were on the top of light house see the Banshee being released. It would have been a lot bette rid the banshee came to the light house and became the new light for the light house. That would have scared the players thinking she was attacking and also giving that nice ending like they restored peace to the lighthouse.

    I named the crab Simon Redshell and gave him some jokes like puns about the shark not feeling gill-ty about eating you, not claw-strophobic about squeezing into the shipwrecks, almost pulling a mussel bringing back the treasure, then apologizing for the jokes because he's just fishing for a laugh. Be careful though, an adventurer was swimming around a while back and started shouting "HELP! Shark, help!", he wasn't very smart... He should have known that shark wasn't going to help him. You could try disguising yourself as a shark to sneak past Daggermaw, but be careful, that trick might be wearing fin.

    For the crab, I had it not have or ever been given a name, so my players settled on Crabsly. Their go to name for anything where they don't want to be overly creative is *ly. So one player has Horsely (a regular horse), another has Bonesly (skeleton horse from dragon mound).
    One thing I found frustrating with this quest is that the charm of the storm doesn't give you a DC for casting.
    So with discussion with the first player to get it, settled on a 15 13 10 decreasing DC (as the charm faded from their body).
    Glad to see you considered Fheralai for this quest. I'm looking forward to bringing back Crabsly as the tower of storms is close to another location the players may find themselves at in the future story line.

    So a banshee can only be laid to rest if they gets some crabs? It's your time to shine. Bards come forth and prosper(?)! 😅
    But on a more serious note, great job with all the extra ideas. I was nearly at a loss for any (that you didn't already think up) but then I thought, what if the giant crab and banshee were formerly lovers. But the male was cursed to be a giant crab and thinking him dead, the banshee killed herself in despair. And like most undead entities is now stuck in a loop, not heeding the words of her beloved. So until you kill the BBEG and she sees him change back, she isn't put to rest. Then you can get some sweet Ladyhawke goodness out of what would otherwise be a random giant crab.

      @@BobWorldBuilder This would require combining DoIP and LMoP but what if Talos was orchestrating the events of both to essentially end civilization, bringing the world back to a "more pure" naturally destructive state. And he is using the players as his unwitting pawns.
      So for example, the players think they are doing good by dealing with the orcs at Wyvern Tor but by doing so, the orcs are forced to ally with the half-orcs as they now have been displaced twice. First from the dragon and then by the players. And what if the dragon was pushed to the region by Talos to destabilize the Zhentarim and Black Spider's plans to get a hold of the Forge of Spells? As Talos intends to use it to arm his growing army of angry orcs/half-orcs or maybe just turn it into an arcane bomb of sorts! 😮
      Ultimately, I'd have to take a hard look at the additional adventures to DoIP involving Talos but it seems like he (or his avatar) could easily be the BBEG of a campaign using it and LMoP.

    I ran Tower of Storms today and named my crab Kasell after the long-time score keeper from NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. The players thought it was “kessel” though and decided that the quest for the conch shell was a “Kessel Run” 🤣. In my game, the PCs found the Tower through the random map in Mormesk's study in Wave Echo Cave (LMoP). It worked really well as an initial transitional quest because it's pretty disconnected from the overall Dragon story. Plus, it has a cool Davy Jones/Pirates of the Caribbean theme to it that my players really liked that set the tone of the game (at least the Talos subplot) really well.

    One of my players is a cleric of Kelemvor, so instead of just hearing about the shipwrecks from a random rumor I'm gonna have his god personally request him go to the area and bring a restless spirit via some sort of vision or dream. Upon releasing the spirit they'll get another dream from Kelemvor who will reward the cleric with a (temporary) extra usage or two of their Channel Divinity.
    I'm gonna only have the party make the one wisdom save. Technically speaking they'd have to make three but 3 seems excessive and I doubt anyone will escape with 3 checks, but one or two party members will still probably fail with just the one. The Harpies will also act as an alert for Moesko to start summoning a storm.
    I'm probably gonna combine the Moesko summoning a storm idea and moving him to area T8 into a scene as they arrive similar to that one in LOTR where Saruman is impeding the Fellowships journey through the Misty Mountains from atop Isengard. With the storm not really buffeting the party until they reach the switch back on the island. I want them to be able to have decent chats with Kynareth (the crab) and Miraal without having to worry about suddenly dropping into the ocean.
    I also wanna have a more obvious method to hint that there's more treasure within the ships. Maybe the crab will mention that the other ships contain treasure, or have the character with a high passive perception spot some glinting underneath the waves.

    Thanks for the tips! Ran this quest this past weekend. Had a lot of fun with it. I actually rolled up a Rock Gnome NPC from Gnomegarde. She was out looking for treasure in order to help rebuild Gnomegarde after the misfortune they'd had. She told my party about the tower and accompanied them and participated in the action. Ended up being dragged under water by Daggermaw. Might be dead. Or I might reintroduce her later on, missing a leg or something :)
    About the magic items in the wrecks. For example, a +1 weapon needs to be identified. I just told my wizard that he sort of "knows". Got any other tips on how to handle magic items that need to be identified?

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  3 роки тому +3

      That's great! It's good how the npc ended up disappearing for now-- unless they're being run by a player, you never want to have an NPC stealing the spotlight! I believe the Dungeon Masters Guide says that any characters can tell when something is magical, and of course use identify to learn exactly what it does. But I believe they can also take a short rest with the item to learn its properties according to the book. Personally, I don't like that rule because I prefer my magic stuff being more mysterious, so I let PCs make arcana checks to get some information. Otherwise they just have to use it to see what it does!

    I lured my party here when they were on their way to the Dragon Barrow. They were camped out near the intersection of the Triboar Trail and the High Road. First I had one of the harpies venture inland hunting for food at night. In the morning I had the crab venture inland begging for help. I know that it was unlikely for the crab to go 10 miles inland, but I couldn't find another way to get them their before trying to fight the invisible stalker in the dragon barrow without any magic weapons.

    My partner (who's the only person in my party in this campaign) decided to name the crab Marnie. I made her into a female crab who wears a pirate hat that came from one of the ship wrecks.
    So he went and got the item to return to the banshee but I made it so that once the banshee left, the crab would also lose the magic that was cast on her (deciding it went with the entity that gave it to them).
    Now my boyfriend is adamant he got Marnie's intelligence back up so she can speak again...so I guess I'm going to homebrew a quest for that 😂 the dedication to this crab is incredible.

      @@BobWorldBuilder Yeah I was surprised too that there isn't much official content on the topic. Honestly it's a bit weird that there is no information on it in the essentials kit. Seems like there's a couple of plot holes in this quest: 1) How does he come and go from the lighthouse without being charmed? 2) How is he not affected when they start singing to the PCs? The lighthouse is well within the 300ft range, and it's probably not fully sound-proof, right?

    Called her Maddy. Around the same time my players were in thier Moana faze thanks to youngsters yet known to the fun of DnD... Kid you not they called it "talking a lot". Anyway, they asked if it was a "Shiny crab" (Tamatoa anyone?) I agreed, they asked if there are any items on the crabs back, I thought...." A weapon... Like an anchor?....yes. oh you cast detect magic? Yes it is magical and enchanted with...Conjuration magic. You want it as a reward for the banshee being put to rest?...Sure?"
    Worst inspired blunder of my dm career. One player played Genshin impact and favored an ice character that could freeze water at a rate of Skill vs. cool down, the bard. We also had a he-man like Fighter that like to brawl with objects without the traveler brawler Feat (don't ask we did, just had more questions). They also had a storm sorcerer in the party that could cause frostbite and a rogue with a magic Item.
    Long story short, they already had a ring of Swim speed from something else they quested for, found and tested the water breathing protion in the Harpy nest and then came up with a plan to loot the ships.
    The Bard who played Genshin obtained a shortsword of Frostbrand that if hit with a cold spell, could freeze up to 15x5 cubic feet of water (similar to the shape water spell) and created a frosty boat with ice. The he-man fighter paddled with an oar and then used the anchor and chain as a fishing hook.
    Maddy (the crab) and or party's rogue would swim down to get the loot, and when the shark comes, lure it to the anchor, and they will drag it ashore to suffocate it.
    Meanwhile the sorcerer will attempt to freeze the water around the sunken boats, mast, then railing, then Hull until one of them is risen in tact. Use Ice and mending to repair it and use it to tactically salvage the ships. Using arcana checks for that endeavor. Ended season there. Wish me luck...Also will take your advice on the Disney ending with Maddy turning into a sea elf as well and the Banshee having also the ability to be put to rest.

    Yeah careful with having Cryvain fly overhead. My son was playing an overconfident fighter on the way back from this quest. He was carrying the enchanted battle axe. I announce they hear something in the sky but can't see for the clouds. I make it scream and cry like a dragon for a round. My sons still doesn't get that it is the dragon and says, all cocky like, "I stand in the middle of the road and shout at the sky". The other two kids jump into the bushes. On the first round of combat Cryovain flies out of the sky and uses his breath weapon for like 65 damage and freezes him in one go. He carries him off as a block of ice. Magic weapon gone... sad story. This totally hacked off my other two kids as these characters had history as the children of their PCs from the LMOP campaign. That, and he was the only tank fighter, they are Wizard and Druid... He created a new character and I made him take a backstory with fear of losing friends and a propensity to over analyze whether party members might die.
