  • In June of 1944 the Allies had gathered an overwhelming force in Britain and were preparing to begin the decisive campaign against Germany in Western Europe. They planned to land their forces in France and reach the German border by May of 1945. For Germany the only path to victory was pushing the Allied landings into the sea and destroying their forces.

    • @anyasis5720
      @anyasis5720 3 роки тому +13

      I disagree and here’s why:
      Technically it is known as Operation Anvil but to state that that’s it’s more known name is simply incorrect. Operation Anvil was only named as such for it was to be carried out alongside Operation Sledgehammer (now known as Operation Overlord) but due to a lack of available resources it was called off.
      Whens’t the allies saw that they didn’t have sufficient resources to supply the allies due to the ports in Normandy being clogged up they decided to reconsider on Anvil and then finally went through with it. Two Weeks prior to its execution they decided to rename it to Operation Dragoon as it really doesn’t make sense anymore as it no longer coincided with Sledgehammer. So not only was it not known as Anvil during its execution it also has been called Dragoon for much more time.

    it's so cool having a personal connection to one of the bubbles on the map. My grandfather was in the 35th Infantry Division and was wounded in the Battle of Nancy. For the rest of his life he did not want any of his children or grandchildren joining the military and encouraged my older uncles to register as conscientious objectors to avoid the draft (which they did), though he was proud of my cousin who served in Iraq.

      Almost everyone in the US has ancestors that fought in WW2. More than half of all males aged 18 to 30 served in uniform. There's nothing unusual about having a relative that served on the Western Front. There are tend of millions of americans that can lay claim to that today.

    I think this helped me to understand why the allies thought that Market Garden would be a success, from this perspective it does look like the western front is completely broken and that it would have led to a significant shortening of the war.

    • @willkp50
      @willkp50 3 роки тому +26

      To be fair, I think Market Garden did have a real possibility of success. It just happened to be that everything that could have possible gone wrong went wrong. It’s impressive how close they got to crossing the Rhine considering how many factors had been tipped in the German’s favour.

    • @willkp50
      @willkp50 2 роки тому +8

      @@DeepCFisher Yes that is true. However, I think that despite that, the plan could have succeeded had it not been for the weather, the 82nd failing to take Nijmegen bridge and the SS at Arnhem (all of these combined). Furthermore, I think that you can explain Allied ignorance through political concerns. The British were growing (imo understandably) increasingly worried due to their lack of forces on the Western front and feared that despite fighting since the beginning of the war, the Americans would overshadow them in the peace conference (as they ultimately did). Furthermore, the British had essentially run out of manpower and so were desperate for a successful, British led operation which could shorten the war. While this doesn’t excuse the operational failings of the British high command, it does explain why everyone was so willing to back Market Garden

      700 men mainly from 2nd Para Btn held the bridge for 4 days when it was supposed to be held by the entire division for 2 days. All while 9th SS Panzer pounded them with Tigers and SPs. The rest of the division was all blocked from reaching the bridge by 9th SS and roadblocks set by the ragtag German troops.
      82nd Airborne prioritised taking the high group south of Nijmegen over the bridge. Their initial assault on the bridge was repulsed and could only take the bridge after XXX Corp arrived.
      Then, General Horrocks ordered a 12 hour halt. During that time, the Arnhem Bridge party was overwhelmed.

    My grandfather grew up in Jersey, one of the Channel Islands that were the only parts of Britain that was occupied by Nazi Germany. He once told me he used to go to bed and watch the coast of Normandy, only 14 miles away, glow in a fiery blaze on the horizon and go to sleep with the soft sound of artillery in the distance. Jersey and our sister island of Guernsey were occupied during the fall of France in 1940 and as you will able to see in this video, the Channel Islands will remain occupied in Nazi German hands until May 1945 whilst surrounded by Allies. This means that Jersey and Guernsey were one of the last places to be liberated from Nazi occupation.
