- FIRST 500 MILE MPG TEST 2023 GMC CANYON AT4 ACROSS CALIFORNIA
Dustin and I drive 500 miles across California, first unloaded, then loaded down with 600 lbs of paper. We check the mileage both ways and compare.

These videos give me a glimpse of things to come when mine finally shows up at the Dealership. Thank you. I will stay tuned.
Glad we can help! Thanks for watching! tc
Great content Todd, thank you!
Thanks! It was a long day but with it. Have a good night.
Great videos! I’m looking forward for the arrival of my new Canyon AT4
You will love it! Thanks for watching!
Thank You for sharing your experience.
Trying to do my best. Thanks for commenting!
looking forward to this truck in a year or two, definitely following along on your ownership videos for it!

Thanks for watching!
I get better mileage with my 29 year old s10 with a 4.3 v6. I love the idea of the big 4cyl but realistically a truck this size should be getting in the mid twenties for fuel economy. My 20 year old all wheel drive Volvo XC70 with a 2.5 5 cylinder engine gets over 21 mpg around town and I have gotten 36 mpg on a recent trip to Maine.
Yes, things were much different back then, but regulation and EPA standards have actually made things worse for the industry. As for you XC70, Beautiful vehicle by the way, comparing a truck with a unibody car is not a fair comparison. Put that same engine is a square body on frame truck and I bet the numbers would be more aligned. the extra weight, tire size and weight, and towing capacity all contribute to that number.
Thanks for Watching!
A compact truck weighing 1,900 lbs less with 165hp/230 ft/lb vs a mid-size with 310hp /430ft/lb should get better. Imagine how good of fuel mileage this new truck would get if it weighed 1,900 lbs less, with half the horsepower & torque, and as narrow & short as an s10. What's the maverick get? That's probably the answer.
Yup no doubt! Might as well.have left the 6 in there..my 2011 grand cherokee v6 gets 16 around town ffs
Enjoying the videos on the new GMC! I am a little surprised it doesn't get a little better MPG though if I'm being honest.
We always want more mpg the higher inflation raises gas prices. Thanks for watching!
Drill, Baby, Drill. @@ToddCotta
My 23 at4 which ive owned now for a week is averaging around 15 mpg. I drive 9 miles to work and 17 traffic lights to deal with. Can't wait to take a trip in it to see what it will get.
Highway makes a HUGE difference... Hope you love it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I live in Clovis so this fits what my driving habits would be. I love the styling of the canyon, I’m actually stuck between this or the older diesel version.
Glad it was helpful! The new truck is nothing l like the old one. I had '19 Colorado and hated it. This truck really does the trick for me!
Great pro 2 A channel!
Thank you!
Another great and informative video! MPGs ... not great. But this truck never claimed to be a Prius competitor. For the capability you get, sure could be worse. Keep up the great content!
Truck buyers put capability over efficiency. I love it when people who drive small crossovers or sedans want the same fuel numbers as heavy trucks. Put the 3.0 Baby Duramax in here and then watch what happens. But yes I agree it could be much worse. Thanks for watching!
It’s a nice truck and the tech and other features are certainly an upgrade over the previous gen. BUT, I hear arguments from people saying more power and more towing capacity at the expense of gas mileage is worth it. However at what point does having a mid-size truck that costs as much as a full size and doesn’t return any better fuel economy make any sense? This is why, as much as I deplore anything Ford I think they really nailed it with the Maverick. It’s a true “in-between” light duty hauler that’s powerful and gets fantastic gas mileage. No matter how you swing it those numbers you quote are absolutely terrible and dumbfounding that they are actually worse than the outgoing V6. 🤷♂️
Comparing a Ford Maverick (which I love) and this truck is apples and oranges. If the Maverick fits your needs then there is one choice to make, its the Maverick! When you have that 430 lb ft torque number, fuel economy will suffer. The new Nissan Frontier has a naturally fueled v6 310 but only 285 lb ft torque. It should get better epa but it is almost exactly the same. People who buy and use trucks rely on the capabilities of the truck not the fuel economy. The Maverick is low on the capability scale but high on efficiency. That is exactly why Ford can't keep them in stock. I wish you well! Thanks for the comment.
@@ToddCotta I agree and I love your new truck. I ordered a 2023 Colorado ZR2 because I really don't want a full size truck and couldn't care less if it costs slightly more to drive my new ZR2 than a gutless Tacoma or whatever. Also I don't think your truck cost anywhere near the same as a full size truck with comparable off-road features, comfort, tech etc. Not even close.
This video made me much more content with my Canyon w/v-6. My actual mileage is quite a bit better. Thanks for the vid
It's the price we pay for the power. I would have preferred the V6 also.
@@ToddCotta ya, that extra 2 horsepower cant even be noticeable though. The new design is SO much better looking is the struggle for me.
Love the Canyons! And California is full of beautiful open terrain so in a pinch IF you need to go off road you got the capabilities that’ll work flawlessly.. Gas mileage may not be the prettiest but it sure as hell isn’t the worse!
I have plans for a few offroad journeys this summer. Thanks for watching!
Drag race with the Nissan is a must !! Good vid!
In a few hours it's going to happen!!! Thanks for watching!
@@ToddCotta how bad did you smoke him? Inquiring minds want to know!
video will be uploaded in about one hour. You got to see what this AT4 did to that Nissan.
Love the videos. I have been considering the Canyon AT4 or the Jeep Gladiator Diesel. How is the driving noise of the Canyon vs the Gladiator? Overall do you think the canyon or gladiator would be more comfortable on a road trip? Thanks for putting up videos about the Canyon, it looks like a nice truck, good mix of size and power.
I would say the Canyon 84 is a bit quieter than the gladiator but there's more room in the cab. And as for comfort, the seats are about the same and ride is about the same. It's just a matter of which one fits your personality better.
That's a good variety of driving. It might get a tad better.
My 2021 Colorado 4wd V6 is getting about 24-26 mpg depending how I drive it.
That V6 was a great engine. Sorry to see it go. I would have probably opted for that. Wish it had the Baby Duramax. That would be a BEAST! Thanks for commenting!
I also averaged (warm weather fuel mileage) on my 2017 Z71 Colorado crew cab 24-26 mpg driving country roads with a few stops commuting to work and back, 60 miles round trip. Size matters and that new truck is bigger with larger tires, there goes the mileage.
Still going back and forth between the AT4 and the ZR2 as I have them at the exact same price point (obviously there are locker differences)...leaning towards the AT4. However, trying to justify the mileage drop as I have a 2018 ZR2 babymax. Just did a 400+ mile trip to the beach today at 75 mph and got around 26 MPGs. It is hard to let that go haha. However, appreciate your reviewing of the AT4 and looking forward to more on it; might just sway me to get one.
ZR2 if you are going to the desert. AT4 if you like luxury and comfort plus a little off road. Thanks for watching!
I’d buy something besides a pos Gm.
@zakk8910 Isn't it great that we have options and many trucks to choose from. I agree that we all have personal preferences and likes and dislikes. That is what keeps these vehicles changing and improving! Thanks for the comment

You would not believe how many comments are calling it ugly. I can't see how they can say that. Thanks for the kind words!
Hi Todd awesome videos keep it up. I was wondering if you could do a video of the fram is wax coated or Ecoated thanks
It's just powder/ecolated not waxed. We in CA don't have salted roads so it's not a big issue. The rust belt and N/E it's a real issue. I will try to film a short showing the frame.
@@ToddCotta thank you very much
Great Videos. I think you are steering me away from the Chevy Colorado. Did you use the auto start/stop feature or was it disabled? Thanks
I had it disabled for some of the trip. But the AC was on which disabled it also. Thanks for watching!
Just made a trip 750+ miles round trip in my 2011 tacoma prerunner and averaged 21mpg driving 70-75 mph (4.0).think I'll keep what I have even with 110800+ miles on the clock
Wow that is great!!!!
Can you give us your opinion on whether purchasing the at4 trim or the at4x trim? I am trying to decide, but I cant make up my mind.
Ok, so it is a bit complex. Are you a hard core off-roader? Are you a mall crawler type? Do you want to have the status symbol of having the most expensive mid-sized truck on the market? The AT4X is nice, but not practical for the every day truck owner. But some people only want the best of everything and that's why there is an AT4x. Some people believe that more gadgets you have on a vehicle the more future problems. Well AT4X has all of gadgets. If you are not the desert running type, but have to have the best, then AT4X. If you need a truck with good offroad manners for light off roading, then AT4. Hope I didn't bore you. Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for these "real-world use" videos.
I am considering replacing my 2020 Colorado Z71 with a new generation truck. The information you provide is extremely helpful. Maybe a Canyon AT4X is in my future...
Here's a few bucks for a couple of gallons of CA fuel. Keep the vids coming!
Wow, dude! That is the first time anyone has every gifted me $$$$$! The fuel cost for this morning's hypermiling loop was $12! That made it worth it!
@@ToddCotta You bet! Keep the videos coming!
Came for the Canyon At4 content and info, subscribed for the 2A support. Thanks for the real world information on your new truck, which has been quite useful as I consider my impending purchase. And thank you for trying to be a beacon of freedom standing against the wave of Kommifornication.
This is the only hybrid Gun/Truck cannel on UA-cam. I love both, so I will do both. Thanks for the support!
@@ToddCotta Yep awesome, subbed 👍🏻
most of your Canyon videos are scenes with the camera pointing at you... and you talking. I do appreciate you giving us a heads-up on the new redesigned Canyon; lets seem more of the vehicle and its specifics in the videos.
I have taken many pictures and videos of the truck. There are also many videos out there with in-depth looks at car shows and such. I am trying to get information out there about the features and driving experience. I will be doing a more thorough look around the truck today when I put it against the Pro4X Nissan this afternoon. Thanks for watching! tc
Curious , did you keep the auto start stop on or off ? have you been noticing the cylinder deactivation turn on ?
I had AC was on all day so it never activated. It was on. But never was used. Thanks for watching!
Thanks but hey like you said they are bricks on the road and are bigger and heavier than last Gen i can see cars arround bein so small beside the truck great review
Regardless of the mpg. It's a super nice truck and the fuel economy is just okay. Thanks for watching!
Shockingly bad mileage should be getting 30 that sucks since I’ve been looking forward to the new truck..thanks for the numbers!
How is that? I got almost 30mpg a few days ago with this truck. Find me a truck that has this power that can get better fuel economy at 75 miles per hour on crowded freeway. We all want better fuel economy but that is not always possible when we need a truck to be a truck. We all can't drive hybrids or Honda Ridgeline type vehicles. Thanks for commenting!
Mileage is a bit better than our Tacoma but more power and Bette towing. I was hoping the four would do a little better but definitely not bad for all of the capability! I will be watching for the GMC vs Nissan!
We are prepping for the filming right now. Yes everyone wants better fuel economy, but I can't see how you can get 430 lb/ft of torque and good gas mileage. Thanks for commenting!
I just made a 2800 mile trip in a 2020 Sierra with 6.2 and averaged 19.2 over all
That's great for a motor that big! Thanks for watching!
I've been in the repossession biz since 2001. In 2005, I was driving the wrecker, a brand new GMC C5500 with the Vulcan Intruder wheel lift. One night on the freeway 2 morons racing each other hit me on the passenger side and sent me into the center wall. I bounced off the wall and back across all lanes and took out a freeway sign. The GMC was totaled. BUT.. it kept running and driving long enough for me to get up the off ramp and off the freeway. I walked away without a scratch. One of the guys that hit me wasn't so lucky.
Thanks for commenting!
Would have thought a lot better for 4 cyl turbo tbh....was @ 16-17 in my 2500 from Phoenix to LA in nasty headwind
It is a thirsty torque monster. I could probably get 23 out of it if I drove 55 mpg on a flat straight road for 100 miles. Thanks for watching!
Dang, the ZR2/AT4X is probably going to get 2-3 less than the AT4 with the bigger tires and lift. Going to be interesting. Regardless your MPG isnt that bad with that much tq. I'd still take it.
Yes, the more lift, larger tires, more equipment = lower economy. Thanks for watching!
Wonder what the Tacoma hybrid will pull off. I don't think the Tundra hybrid is that great.
@@jeffk464 Yea I am looking forward to seeing what the Tacoma hybrid will do.
@@jeffk464 Agreed, I was disappointed too.
Me too!
What’s your gas tank capacity on? Your truck is 21 gallons?
I don't know exactly but right around 20-21 gal. Thanks for watching! Yeah
Got my desert sand at4 last week, mostly city miles so far and it’s fluctuating from 13.5 to 14 mpg. 9 miles to work. Love the truck but kinda disappointed with the mpg.
Same here, exact mileage. Highway isn't too bad but city is poor. thanks for watching!
Thanks for the trunk information. Sorry for your state officials who shouldn't be in office.
Appreciate the sympathy! Have a great day!
What was your avg speed during your drive ? Thanks
75mph on average. I wanted to get home and the freeways were quick. the first 20 miles though was the 405 in traffic jam. Thanks for watching!
Have you considered putting a catch can to prevent build up on the intake valves since it’s a GDI engine?
Enlighten me.... I am not aware of what a "Catch Can" is or what it does. Thanks for commenting.
@@ToddCotta GDI is gasoline direct injection. It means the fuel injectors are spraying directly into the cylinders rather than from the ports. The PCV valve reroutes excess gassed from the engine back into the intake ports bringing some oil with it. Over time the ports get carbon build up from the oil burning and lead to less air in the air to fuel mixture and at worst can clog up the air intake ports. Then you’d have to service the intake manifold and walnut blast the carbon off.
They make catch cans that act as a filter to “catch” the oil before it re-enters the air intake.
I’m waiting on my 2023 trail boss. Planning on doing this. Ford had issues with this but fixed it by adding port injection to their GDI system where the gas essentially cleans the oil buildup. Chevrolet didn’t do that unfortunately.
@@Mi4mi_joe I'm pretty sure getting the induction service occasionally will prevent excessive carbon buildup
Time will tell!
@@Jorts-W-Bush it’s not the fuel that’s the issue. It’s the excess gas being rerouted to the intake valves. If no gasoline is passing through them, the GDI engines, then that won’t clean the valves where only air passes.
Nice breakdown on the numbers and I’ll admit those new Canyons look good.
However, I had to go Z71 because I’m strange and don’t want the lift that every Canyon gets because I knew it would take an mpg hit.
I commute 64 miles a day for work, so mileage is a bigger concern. I will say, CA gas prices (among other things) always makes me thankful I don’t live there. Beautiful scenery though (visited twice).
Thanks for watching! The Z71 is a great choice!
For those just looking for MPG: approx 19.5 manually computed and per computer.
Lots of people dogging on this engine. I honestly don't think this engine is as bad as this truck makes it seem. I think what happened with this redesign is that the engineers made the truck truck significantly wider without considering the real world aerodynamic consequencess. In other videos here going slow this truck can get over 20. I bet if you were to wind tunnel this truck alongside a Silverado you'd find the drag coefficient is actually worse, potentially a result of it being shorter and just some of the front geometry characteristics. In my opinion there'd be a much better reception to this vehicle if GM had gone the other way - keep the lifted stance but make it slightly smaller in footprint. This wouldn't affect towing and I think you could do this without affecting interior dimensions or even the box size....but they just made it wider without improving any of the usable dimensions like box size significantly. Just mind-boggling.
Looks like the Raptor style fender flares are the trend now. They made these GMC Canyons 3 inches wider by pushing out the body panels. I would have preferred a 3 inch wider body/bed so I could get 48 inches between the wheel wells. It is all about curb appeal these days and not function and practicality. Great comment!
I avg 18.5mpg over 3 years of driving a 5.0 v8 f150. It seems obvious at this point people want power more than economy, no matter what cat and mouse games the emissions stuff goes through.
Wow well stated! Every time I see car reviews no reviewer ever says "this is too much power". They always beg for more ponies. You can't have both in a fossil fueled vehicle. More power equals more dino juice. Thanks for commenting!
F150 what? 2wd or 4WD, do you have an offroad package? what type of driving?
@@ToddCotta My GTI has too much torque for first gear, it can't really put the power down. Other people complain about wheel hop for the same reason.
Anyway to drop tailgate with a button or switch in the cabin??
There is no button in the cab nor is there a button on the key fob. It is a handle lift not button release tailgate. Thanks for watching
@@ToddCotta appreciate it and thanks for all the helpful content
Why is the fullsize Silverado/gmc getting low to mid 20mpg's while the smaller truck gets lower mpgs than that? I'm getting 17-19 in my 2020 trailboss no extra lift on 12ply n heavy 35" tires!!
Just the way GM wants I guess. These trucks are much lighter than a Sierra/Silverado. Thanks for watching!
They made a mistake dropping the 2.8l duramax. What they should have done is twin turbo the duramax. I got 25 city and 35 highway with the diesel.
I agree. That little motor was a good thing for the brand. Thanks for watching!
I've been thinking about trading my 2017 Silverado for a mid-size truck specifically for better gas milage. The milage you calculated doesn't seem all that good to me. I've gotten 20-22 miles per gallon highway driving in my Silverado..
If you are buying a truck for gas mileage, then diesel trucks win all the time. If you are concerned about fuel economy then there are plenty of high MPG cars out there. This Canyon has more power than the 2017 midsized v8 trucks. That is why MPG is so low. Go with the base model GM Turbo 4 and it will be much better. Thanks for watching!
Jesus, the Gas Mileage for this truck is horrible. I will keep my Diesel for quite some time. The old ones with V6 or Diesel were much better. Tks for the great video.
The gas mileage is similar to all of the other gassers in the mid size market. Diesel is always better for fuel economy but the $3K to $5k up charge for the motor can but a lot of unleaded. Please be careful comparing unleaded to diesel fuel economy they are totally different beasts.
Wondering if your using regular fuel 87 octane or midgrade fuel 89 octane. Thanks.
Just regular 87 no higher. I spend too much for gas anyway. Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
I wonder after "break-in " mileage
Time will tell. So far not horrible! Thanks for watching!
Seems to be a great working little set up. It will be interesting to see how dependable it is compared to the old Vortec v6 that easily went over 250,000 if well maintained. When turbos can take the same beatings and last, I'm all in! I tend to use a truck for a lot more than their rated capacity. I'm not a weekend truck type owner.
So far so good. This engine turbo combination has over 7 million miles logged now in the Silverado/Sierra and CT4 Cadillac. I have not heard much negative about it so far! Thanks for commenting!
@@ToddCotta You better dig deeper plenty of complaints on Line no way 4 banger turbo will go 200k miles
I’m surprised by the mpg. I’m sure it’ll get better as the truck breaks in - I hope anyway. Those numbers are worse than what I get with my 5.0 F-150 even when I’m driving like a maniac to hear the flowmaster true duals.
I was driving it hard... I just did a 70 mile Hyper Mileage drive at 50mpg and the numbers changed. I will upload it in a few hours. Thanks for watching!
@@ToddCotta I look forward to seeing the results. Beautiful truck btw!
Its up now!

Yup! Thanks for watching!
Are you using premium gas ?
Regular Unleaded. That's all. I wanted a real world test not a hyper-mile test. Thanks for watching!
@@ToddCotta Thanks Todd 😊
You say highway speeds. In Texas that is 90. What were u doing?

Why is my AT4 Canyon 2023 only getting 300 miles with a full tank?
Small tank. I have gotten as much as 350 miles.
@@ToddCotta when the dealership gave it to me with a full tank it read 441 miles till empty
My goodness. I really want one but my twenty year old F350 Super Duty with a 7.3L diesel gets substantially better fuel economy. I realize its a diesel but gee whiz i expected better
Seems like it would be better but technology has improved but people want more power so something has to suffer. Thanks for watching!
I get close to that with my 2001 Chevy Suburban, and it has over 250,000 miles, hmmm
But you suburban does not have 430 lb.ft of torque either. It is the penalty for turbo power. I guess a truck buyer really cant have it all. Thanks for watching.
@@ToddCotta I doubt that 2.7 4cyl will last 300-500k miles
That's OK because I dump my trucks at 45-50k miles. I don't trust any vehicle at over 75 k.

Great looking truck but that’s terrible mpg for a mid size 4 cylinder. Some V6 and even some V8 trucks get that.
We were 75-80 mph the whole time. The only trucks I see today are diesel trucks. I always want better economy but I am also realistic to know more power, more fuel. Thanks for watching!
I think a V6 Frontier would do better.
It does not have the same power. My new video just proves how powerful this AT4 turbo is against the Nissan PRO4X. It will be uploaded within the hour.

But since this is new they always get worse milage my moms v6 has got 3 mpg better after 100k miles when it was new it was ge9like 18. Now i can get 23 to 25 depending
Here's to hoping for better fuel economy! Thanks for watching!
Who’s they ???
$7 or $8 ? 😮
Sacramento and CA eoa. It's going to get ugly. Thanks for watching!
Good report but I would like to know what is considered freeway speeds. I'm on the other side of the country and our freeways speeds are usually between 65 and 75; this is generally when mpg takes a hit, and when 10 mph difference makes a difference.
Didn't want to tell the government I was 75-80 mph the whole time. But yes, we could have gotten a much better economy number but that is not realistic.
@@ToddCotta Thanks Todd, so you actually got decent fuel mileage.👌👍
@@ToddCotta not all the time, but most of the time I will drive my truck like an old lady because I am not worried about time of travel. I don't mind trading time for better gas mileage, and I enjoy driving my GMC with the tunes on and all that comfort and tech at my fingertips. Plus in Texas I always feel safe with my 1911 in the glove box and a M&P Shield on my hip.
This truck is terrible on gas. What were they thinking 🤔
Everybody wants more power, so when they do that, something has to give. If I were to drive 55 mph on flat land I have seen 26mpg. But real world driving is a very different thing. Thanks for the comment!
@@ToddCotta this is true. It does have a lot of power
They should have put the 3 liter duramax in it. Could have averaged 35mpg
I would have bought that one for sure! It would have been a SWEET truck! Thanks for the comment!
Wouldn't fit. Read an article and GM engineer's said 3.0 Dura wouldn't fit based on design. There is a displacment/weight issue. 2.7L(166cu in/331lbs) vs 3.0L(183cu in/467lbs) which doesnt work with redesign. Plus now you have a def tank and cost to wrap in...On top of that it would have ate into there sales of full size truck.
Bummer!
If gas was cheap as it was before I would trade in my canyon duramax . Cool looking but no thanks 😎

This thing is not your average motor.... In full size trucks it is Faster than the 5.3 and only 1/2 second slower than the 6.2 V8 in the 0-60... In this truck, it is a Rocket Ship!!
This motor is super quick. I just pulled a 6% grade at 75 mph at 1800 rpms. Yes, rocket is a good word for it. Thanks for watching!
0-60 in 7 seconds isn't a rocket ship 😂 that's slower than the current ranger

@@ToddCotta mix. I am not hammering it. I noticed I barely go over 5lbs of boost when driving it.
Not impressed by the gas mileage. Think I would go full size.
For the power it has it's not too bad.
I get better mileage in both my 2000 tundra trd v8 and my 97 Dakota5.2 v8
Yes but they didn't have the HP and TQ numbers this truck has. They have a base motor that gets much better MPG than the Turbo Max. Thank for commenting!
Are you the only guy in the country to actually receive one of these trucks? There is literally no UA-cam content other than yours.
That is why I am going crazy putting videos out... NOBODY has these. I want to get my stuff out a quickly as possible to capitalize on the void. I hope you are enjoying what I am trying to put out. Thanks for watching!
That's really nothing to write home about as my 2015 full size GMC fully loaded with a 5.3 gets over 20 miles to The gallon on the highway. These are not good numbers for a four cylinder.
I am not bragging, just stating what people asked me for, the numbers. I can't say I am happy about it, it just is what it is. My 2020 LT Z71 2500 Duramax got about 22 mpg on highway also, but diesel is a whole different conversation. Thanks for watching!
That's awful. My 19 colorado with the 3.6 v6 averages 23 mpg and it has 130k on it. No thanks
The problem is everyone begs for more power.. I had a 16 Colorado V6 and this new motor has over 50 more HP and over 100lb/ft of torque. I went up a 6% grade with 800 lbs in the bed and the truck didn't even down shift. It is a real beast. That's why it's lower. That's why the fuel economy is lower. Thanks for commenting!
@@ToddCotta What you said...lol. Yeah I was going to say people are saying what terrible MPGs, but your getting V8 power out of a turbo I4. Those trucks thier comparing have less power/torque. Someone compared a 5.0L V8(395hp/400tq) that was getting 18.5mpg so less than the 2.7L with more torque. And like you said above the 3.6 V6...

Thats CA for you. CA also has a unique fuel blend that is only produced in CA.
14.5 mpg is horrible for a 4 cyl.
310 hp, 430 lb ft torque. With that much power something has to give. Thanks for commenting!
@@ToddCotta Roger that. I get it but it’s hard to understand since I’ve been driving a 5.7 Hemi for the last 10 years and get about 18-19 mpg on the highway. That 2.7 still doesn’t seem to be very efficient. Toyotas Tacoma V6 gets a little bit better than that 2.7.
I test drove a 2023 AT4 in Cerritos Ca and sorry to say I wasn’t impressed. Glad you like your truck , I’m still shopping for a new midsized truck. Maybe a 2024 ranger ?
All the trucks are pretty good. Its just a matter of preference. Good luck!
That highway mileage is terrible..... my 2018 Ford F150 Lariat with 5.0 V8 gets almost 22 mpg highway..... it is a heavier vehicle and has a V8.... and much more capable than this GM Turd-Mobile.
I can't comment except that the lower hp motor gets a few miles better. The HO motor in this truck is quick but thirsty. Thanks for watching!
I forgot to mention. Those numbers SUCK by today's standards...
All mid size trucks are at these numbers when you compare them side by side. You can't compare a pickup truck to other cars, like Subaru Outback or Honda or even Maverick, because then are not trucks. The are modified Unibody mall crawlers. I have researched all of the trucks and they are all about 1 mpg different form this truck. I know they are not revolutionary or awesome efficient, but if I wanted that I would have gotten a Maverick and been miserable but efficient. Thanks for commenting.
Looks like Mary and her team screwed up again. My 2018 4 door Sierra 1500 SLT AWD with 20's and a 6.2 gets better mileage then that.(That's in Colorado thin air no less) Typical gov BS. newer technology getting worse fuel mileage. Heck, this things predecessor performed better then this thing does.
Same thing, the EPA makes these wild rules that makes cars less efficient and cost more. I can't say why they don't have 50 mpg trucks out there other than maybe the oil companies still minipulate the market. Thanks for commenting!
That is kinda disappointing really. My F150 with the eco is hardly worse if at all.
The Canyon/Colorado trucks are almost the same weight of the F150 and Silverado trucks. That probably why the mileage is similar.
@@ToddCotta makes me wonder what the point of them is at this point then. It’s just a worse version of a full size pickup.
I tell you what. It is much easier to park, easier in traffic. and just the right amount of room for non- commercial use in the bed. I have had 2500, 1500 in GM and Ram trucks. This one is by far the easiest to navigate in the urban areas.
@@ToddCotta that is definitely a plus, I was looking at a canyon and was hoping for some nice fuel economy to replace my full-size. I wish they had the mini diesel available still
14 miles per gallon is TERRIBLE gas milage for a 4cylinder engine. Prove me wrong.
It is good if you count the two stage turbo bolted onto the engine. I drove a V6 Tacoma for a week and it has less power and the exact same fuel economy. I have never had a truck, 4 or 6 cyl that got Nissan Sentra or Toyota Corolla fuel economy. Thanks for watching!
True. Also, I understand the v6 might have a little less power, but you'll never have to replace a worn out turbo either. You know that's inevitable.
If I had the choice of V6 or the Turbo Max, I would have chosen the V6, but GM has other plans. I just really wanted to see exactly what the motor from the Cadillac and half ton trucks would do in a smaller package. Have a great day!
So much worse MPG than my 2019 2WD 5.3 8 speed Crewcab LT Silverado
I don't know why GM can't make more efficient engines. But when the "reviewers" beg for more power every time they do a review what are the manufacturers supposed to do. thanks for watching!
Bro, my "ancient" v6 Frontier gets better gas mileage and I live in the hills of NC. What is even the argument for this truck? Because it has a big screen? LOL. A full size truck from 2012 gets better highway MPG man.
You ancient V6 is probably a great motor! But does it have 430 lbs torque!? That's what keeps the mpg down. The base of this engine in the work truck 2wd is much better for fuel economy.
@@ToddCotta But what is the point? Do you tow with that truck? Is it even relevant for a mid size truck to have 430 TQ? And how long is that little four banger going to hold up pushing that much TQ? Unless you use this purely off road, which you wont, why does that matter? The base engine has worse numbers than my ancient v6.
I keep a truck 2-3 years, then move on. I have owned three new trucks in the past three years. Chevy 2500 LT Z71, Sierra AT4, Jeep Gladiator and now the Canyon AT4. I really don't focus on 100k miles. It will be long gone before I hit 30k. its been great chatting with you.
@@ToddCotta That is a huge waste of money.
That is not good, I will stick with my Honda Ridgeline.
Fair enough! But this truck can do so much more than the awesome Ridgeline. Different purpose different use truck. Glad you like your ride!
Shitttt gas mileage
Compared to? Please don't say Maverick. All mid size trucks aren't much different. Thanks for watching!
@Todd Cotta compared to my 2018 V6 Colorado 4x4 LBDC, I get 24 -26 high way on mix hills
12 minute video to tell me you get 14 mpg..what a waste of time.
I got just under 20 mpg. Where did you get 14? Plus you can just click to the end and skip all of the driving observations and find the final fill up. Thanks for watching!
Thats crap mileage. I wont be buying one. Not with fuel prices like they are.
Trucks are not for everyone. I get it. But if fuel prices are making you decision, there is a great hybrid car out there for you. The hybrid Maverick gets 40 mpg. Have a great day and thanks for watching!
@@ToddCotta ya I currently drive an older canyon but it's paid for so a lil easier to justify crap mileage. I couldn't stomach a 700-800 a month payment plus crap mileage. Ya I'll likely have to explore my options because I won't be buying anything with less than 20mpg preferably at least 25. Hard to believe in this day and age and with technology where it is GMC and Chevy can't get better mileage out of a turbo 4cyl
I was only interested in the topic of your truck, not your politics. I suggest starting a second channel for political talk.
What politics was it talking about during my gun video or are you talking about the other videos I have on my channel. Because it's very difficult to have a gun and car channel and not have politics
@@ToddCotta You start out talking about the fuel efficiency of your truck, and then segway into efforts reduce our independence on non renewable sources of energy by bashing renewable sources of energy? Doesn't make sense to me, so I would rather stick to the subject. It is your channel though, and it's your prerogative to say what you want, I was just giving you some constructive criticism. Have a wonderful day.
