Back in 1982, you could do what ever you wanted to. Redlines, Supa-Roo, GT, Skyway, Haro, Mongoose. We rode dirt tracks, bowls, everything. Only things I can say only difference was chrome v paint, pads v no pads, tuffs v spokes. Great days
"Trail" bikes also usually have more offset in the forks and a slightly slacker headtube angle as well as the longer chainstays, so they feel better going fast because the front end is more "raked out," and the back end and overall wheelbase is longer. I use my BMX basically just for cruising, or riding around bowls at the skatepark, and I do like 0 tricks, so I prefer the "trail" geometry, it feels way more stable going fast, and I'm more confident to attempt stuff.
Just bought an Eastern Traildigger to replace my aging mongoose, I have like 20 bmx bikes but I only do basic tricks and racing but I mostly use them as commuter or cruising bikes because of their small size, ease of maintenance and lightweight
Laughs in 2008 era trail set ups. Short offset forks stupid slack headtubes standard to super long chain stays. Chain stay brakes. Some times with different seat tube angles. My old street forks had the slackest geo. 35mm offset vs Mt old trail forks were 28 to 30mm.
For all you kiddos that haven't any clue of where Freestyle BMX started with a small handful of people, maybe even 2, RL Osborn is one, Bob Haro is another... and this is the real deal RL Osborn...
The center of gravity depends on bb height and crank length. Longer chainstays makes it more stable going fast/straight. Also, I think their wheelbase doesn't have a difference because of the difference in headtube angle.
the trail bike actually has a 30t sprocket, ive seen trail dudes run 30 and up 28t would usually be a street or park thing, this is my opinion but the trail bike you showed does in fact have a 30t
Shorter frames normally have tighter rear triangles which stops the frame from moving so much, which makes for less power being lost when sprinting. Longer bikes are more stable at speed. Back in the day as kids we were unaware of all these factors, sometimes you can get use to such things, it is a bit difficult to get a bike that is great at everything just like a snowboard, similar points mean the same in snowboarding. But for people it is not that much of a problem. Don’t let these facts stop you from having fun.
Some older frames with breaks on the bottom can't have 25-9... Found that out the hard way.sometimes people mistake weight and geometry too,it can make 1 pound feel like 5
Race bikes are good for older dudes just to cruise around on. Super stable, ultra-light plus they can handle trails, bmx tracks and pump tracks and are ok ish for skateparks and a little street stuff.
My "20c inch is a 1996 " Brian Foster " signature race bike. My " 22" is meant for trails, but I ride them both on street. I'm a graceful rider, and I stay away from high drops, so it's okay. I love riding light " race" bikes on the street! And it's " metal " pedals all the way! Wes Sept
Thanks for this knowledgeable video. It’s interesting to know the different type of BMX riding. A guy coming from the new school BMX Bikelife cruising wheelie craze. And again the hint of naughty from Phu, is subtle, comedic, and tasteful.
Being a newbie here please explain why the seats on these bikes slant down in the rear. I have been riding road bikes mostly and the seats are usually level. Thanks, love the energy of your channel.
Road bikes and mountain seats are flatter cause you’d be sitting down when just cruising and if there is a hill you gotta climb the seats angel helps with comfort to go uphill where as for BMX the seat is slanting like that for slight comfort cause you aren’t really sitting down on the seat and the angle helps a bit if you try to clamp your legs or knees on the seat for bar spins
Street frame's have a 75.5 head tube angle and a short back end the trails frame's have a 74.5 headtube angle and a longer back end to be more stable in the air and going fast BUT ive seen pros ride trails on street frames and ride trails fine i think its up to the rider what ever he or she is comfortable on 👍🔥🚲💨
How about a comparo with some bmx racing bikes with the Pro XL, and XXL frames. Some poelpe ride those bikes on the trails, street, and even skate parks. Bmx race bikes need love to.
Ill own the wtp zodiac 2017. Its a street bike. Most of the time i ride park. And i love my twitchy bit still stable bike. For manuals is the short rear end not thath eazy. Be happy with wat You own. And use it with some respect.
depends on how tall you are. midschool was 8" and 8.5 was tall, but now it's anywhere from 8.5 to 10, i've even seen 11's. i think OBB big boy run's 11's, but he's like 6'5" or something really tall.
I was never the best trail/box jumper but riding a sub 13 rear end makes it feel pretty awkward, sometimes makes me want to grab a 13 in rear end…just don’t want to spend that kind of money for a new frame
hey guys I have a lifehack for you, if you wanna TRAIL bike just grab some street frames from 2006-2009 years, it will have 74,5 head and 13,75-14 chains, perfect

most people go with street geo it would make things easier going slow with 36h wheels. people wont tell you 74 type geo is odd because top tube needs to be longer, 21 feels small, bars should be lower, very contrary to modern bmx harder for tricks going slow try 74 with 30t sprocket 175 cranks and some bonedeth 48 spoke wheels good for gaps but heavy
Not necessarily, but trail riders usually prefer longer frame with longer chainstays for more high speed stability, and also other trails/dirt specific geometry.
Phocus phocus phu come on. Tires would be thing I would change dirt to street. I want knobby on dirt and smooth on the street. But I understand it is preference

You took too much man, you took too much. 5 minute explaination in 15 minutes. 10 second demo. **+¼" diff. crank to rear, .5° diff rake front fork tube. Trail vs Street = Stabity vs Agility.**
The lower brake on the trail bike doesn't make sense to me, its lower and more likely to catch mud and twigs, I'd switch the brake location. Longer wheel base makes sense on any kind of off road, more stability and that plays into higher max speed on the trail bike. I am a mtn biker so take my advice w/ a grain of salt.

Yes great but you could destroy a frame in a day..reliability today its in an other level man..
Great times for me too early 80s.

I believe the wider the wheels are from each other the lower the center of gravity which makes it more stable.

The slant is also for bails. It's so you land on top of your seat rather than catch the back edge.

so a longer frame is a trail bike??
Longer dimensions, not just a longer top tube
Not necessarily, but trail riders usually prefer longer frame with longer chainstays for more high speed stability, and also other trails/dirt specific geometry.
