We’re heading to Harrogate to bring you a fantastic new screening of archive footage, specially curated from the collections held in our vaults.
Commissioned by the Harrogate Civic Society and Harrogate Film Society, please join us for an unforgettable programme featuring the people, places, major events, and everyday life in the historic town of Harrogate and neighbouring Knaresborough during the 20th century.
Through a mix of amateur, professional, and television collections, our 90-minute community screening will open a window onto the film heritage of the towns over the decades, and even includes rare footage of the opening of the Odeon Cinema, our venue for the event.

      Hi Balthasar,
Thanks for your comment. YFA have spent the past 34 years collecting, preserving, and digitising films made in or about Yorkshire, to safeguard our moving image heritage and make it available for today’s audiences and for future generations.
We share the films in a number of different ways, including free of charge on our website, by producing DVDs and also by hosting presented screenings of which Harrogate on Film is one. This is not a film that is put together to be played straight through - it is a carefully curated selection of footage, presented by our Archive Manager, and the presentation will include film history and context, not recorded on the film, to enrich the experience. Harrogate on Film would require extensive re-editing and the recording of a complete voiceover to make it suitable for public distribution.
In addition, for some of the content, whilst we hold the films in our collection, we do not own them and are bound by copyright restrictions. We are not, therefore, able to produce a DVD without obtaining and paying for copyright permission from the numerous content owners involved. As a small, registered charity with very limited funds, in this case it isn’t likely to be financially viable for us, although we will explore options.
The cost of preserving and digitising film material runs to many thousands of pounds, meaning that we are continually striving to find funding. I’m delighted to say that due to the hard work of our team over the course of the last 34 years, there are over 2000 films available to view free of charge on our website - www.yfanefa.com - including lots of footage of Harrogate and Knaresborough.
If you would like to help support us in preserving our region’s film heritage collections, you can make a donation via our website: www.yfanefa.com/donate. Your generosity will ensure that these unique films are safeguarded for us and for future generations to enjoy.
